Very Noisy Super Drive

Hi All,
I just got a new iMac 24" (replacement for a lemon 20") and the disc drive seems to be extremely loud (much louder than my previous 2 iMacs) not only when ingesting and ejecting a disc but also when searching and reading. Any thoughts?

I just got a 24" iMac and it works great but with DVDs, the noise from the disk drive is so loud that I can't even watch movies. It's too annoying. Last night I used a book and a t shirt to press up against the drive to try to muffle the sound. Do I just return the iMac? I'm ******!

  • Noisy Super Drive

Just a quick question for you all.
Do any of you put up with a consistently noisy super drive. I realize that some slightly out of balance CD/DVD's can make the annoying vibration sound while spinning, but I seem to have to put up with it most all the time. I have used the drive regularly since purchacing my iMac 2 weeks after MacWorld. In using the drive I have used CDR, CDRW, DVD, DVD+R, and DVD-R, just about everything. There doesn't seem to be a consistent type, or manufacturer of media that does, or does not cause the vibration. I am beginning to wonder if somthing may be wrong with my drive since it is regularly vibrating when used.
    Thanks for the input.

I am beginning to assume I am the only one with consistent optical drive vibration. I may just go ahead and give Apple a call. Talk to you all next time!

  • Very noisy optical drive

    Hi
Received my new Mac Pro a few day ago and have noticed that the optical drive likes to go into fits of absolute horrendous noise - I mean it sounds like its chewing the disc up inside. Sometimes it lasts a couple of minutes but other times it can last for over 10 (very noticable during the fresh install of Leopard). It definitly doesn't sound like a normal 'read' sound and is driving me crazy!
Is this the normal behaviour of a Mac Pro (my iMac and MacBook drives never sounded like this) or is this something that should be returned to Apple?
    Thanks, Chris

Similar to a poster above, when I inserted a disk into my new Mac Pro 2009, it would churn and make a racket where I thought the disk was rattling around inside the caddy!! I slid out the optical drive mounting, loosened the four screws holding the drive into the bracket, then tightened them again, and lo - a near silent drive for a few minutes work.

  • Very noisy hard drive on 8460p

Making a whirring humming sound  from under base. Not the fan. Started after I downloaded Hardware diagnostics to the  partition.

If it's a late 2012 mini, you should still be in your 90 day window to take advantage of Apple phone support. The numbers are here.

  • New iMac: Screen Issues and Noisy Hard Drive

    Hello,
I'm writing regarding my new 27" iMac which I purchased just under a week ago (spec: 3.1GHz Intel Core i5, 1TB HDD, 4GB RAM).
When I got my iMac home and unboxed it, all was fine, however once I had began to install some applications and use them, I noticed an unusual issue with the screen. I had a Skype window open on the left hand side of my screen, with an ongoing chat, Obviously, the chat 'stream' was moving, but the menu items on the far left remained the same. The iMac had been on for about 10mins, with the Skype window open for the same duration. After which, I opened iPhoto, and made it full screen, filling my screen with a dark grey background. I could still see the outline of the text from my Skype window through the iPhoto window. Thinking the window may have been semi-transparent, I closed the Skype window, however when I re-fullscreened iPhoto, the test was still there, as if it was burnt into the screen.
I understand the concept of screen burn, but surely this shouldn't happen after just 10mins? It's nothing permanent, as it fades away again within another 5mins or so, but it is annoying knowing that I can't leave a window open for very long without worrying I will have text burnt into my screen for a period of time. As a graphic designer, I could be working on images that are dark, and likewise, I don't want to see remains of my chat or emails over the top of my design work.
Has anyone else had this issue? Is this an issue that can be repaired by myself (eg. installing a firmware update, although I have all the latest updates from Software Update)? Or should I just return my iMac to the store and get them to look at it? I'm worried that if I take it back, they may fail to see the issue, as the lighing is a lot different in the store to at home.
The other issue I am experiencing is I have a very noisy hard drive, that seems to click and make a grumbling noise rather a lot. Obviously at times when the computer is working hard, this is to be expected (I think), although most of the time it is grumbling away whilst I'm just browsing in Safari with one tab open.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, taken it back and has a successful replacement? I've read that it could be to do with Mac OS X Lion, because people have reported that their hard drive ran silently on Snow Leopard but has got noisier with Lion. Should I wait for a Lion update before returning it? Other than the issues above, everything is fine.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and I look forward to someone being able to shine some light on my issues.

    Thanks for the advice.
Today, I returned my iMac to the Apple Premium Resellers where I purchased it. The helpful chap there looked at my screen and acknowledged the issue, before giving me a brand new iMac.
My previous model came with Snow Leopard pre-installed, which I upgraded to Lion. This new, second iMac is a relatively new one as it has Lion pre-installed. Feeling hopeful, I've just arrived home and unpackaged my new computer.
The result? EXACTLY the same issue. My Twitter window on the far left of my display has been open for no longer than about 7 or 8 mins, and I can clearly see the display pictures from my follwees burnt into the screen when I full screen a dark app like Snow Leopard.
I'm wondering whether this is a Lion issue? Should I wait for a software update before returning it again? It's not something that's going to be annoying on a day-to-day basis, but now that I know it's doing it, I can't help but keep checking when I open iPhoto.
PEOPLE WITH NEW 27" iMAC's: Would you please perform the following test for me and let me know the results?
    1. Open up a white backgrounded application, such as Twitter, Skype, or Safari.
    2. Leave it on screen (anywhere, but far left seems to be worst) for about 5 to 10mins.
    3. Open up iPhoto with it's grey full screen background, or set your wallpaper to a flat colour dark grey.
    4. Now minimise the white backgrounded windows, and switch to a grey background with no windows in front of it.
    5. Look carefully at your screen: can you still see an outline of/text from the window in the position that it was, like it's burnt into the screen?
Thanks in advance to anyone that can perform this for me.

  • Recently bought pro retina 15" with a super drive. But when I played a dvd the quality wasn't very good, any suggestions?

Recently bought pro retina 15" with a super drive. But when I played a dvd the quality wasn't very good, any suggestions?

There is a good chance that the DVD is OK and the machine is OK since a DVD's resolution is set for a television and not for a computer with a resolution 4 times that of the tele (at least).
What are you using to play DVD?
What is the DVD and what does it say on the cover about resolution or aspect ratio?
Just because you have a retina Mac doesn't mean you will get an excellent picture from low resolution media, if you are using DVD player use the menu option for 'Actual Size' this will play it at the resolution for the DVD, any larger then it will start to pixelate.

  • Macbook Pro Super Drive Loud Whirring Sound during Burn and Verify

    Hi there!
I am using Toast 7 and when I burn DVD's I have noticed that the Super Drive gets a very loud whirring sound that seems to get louder and softer during the first 2 minutes of burning and then during the first 2 minutes of verifying; then it's quiet as a mouse. It's very unnerving; the discs seem fine. Anyone know if this is normal before I head to the Apple Store?

They are kind of noisy drives. Lots more head movement early since they burn center out and less so as they get to the edges since each pass covers a lot more ground. I use it is infrequently as I can becuase it is so slow. A $100 external LaCie drive will pay for itself by burning at 16X instead of about 4.

This is a very common problem.  Some are beacuse of the quality of media, some are because of the speed the media is burnt, some are because the drive gets dirty just where DVDs are concerned, and some are because of computer age.  The last problem is common if the machine gets more than 4 years old, the PRAM battery needs replacing, and all sorts of settings start malfunctioning, until lastly the system clock no longer works and it might not boot.  The others, see my FAQ*:

It would be helpful if you were to identify the model of MBP you have.
The noise makers on a MBP are the fan(s), the HDD and the optical drive.  Can you locate the exact position where the noise is coming from?
    Ciao.

  • Super drive and cooling issues

Whenever I play a CD of DVD in my new super drive it comes out very hot even if it was only in the machines for a few minutes. Also, my cooling fans never seem to increase or decrease. I'm not even sure they are on. I can hear them work at maximum speed when I use the Hardware test on the Install disc but I get complete silence when I run the G5 normally. The back of my Mac becomes quite hot after awhile and I am afraid of melting something. Any suggestions?

Hello John and welcome to discussions,
Its pretty normal for this to occur. In fact it's just plain normal and to be expected.
Sounds like you have a 100% happy Mac there.
    Hope that helps you

  • The fan in my laptop became very noisy at minimum capacity after ins Win 8.

My laptop - HP Pavilion dv6-6b56er. After installing the Windows 8 the fan in my laptop became very noisy at minimum capacity. As far as I understand this is a common problem. I installed the latest version of HP Support Assistant and HP Support Framework, but there was an error during installation of HP Coolsense "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A programm run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor".
Sry for bad Eng, im using Google Translate.

It looks like this unit has received Windows 8 drivers.
How was the system upgraded to Windows 8?  Was it through a clean intall or an in-place upgrade?
Has all Windows 8, including switchable graphics in particular, been installed?
Here is the software page should you need it.
My notebook's fan was operating louder than usual when I upgraded to Windows 8.  This turned out to be that swtichable graphics was broken by the upgrade to Windows 8.  Effectively, both video cards were running simultaneously resulting in more heat being produced.  What resolved it for me was installing getting switchable graphics to work properly.  For me, this required a lot of work since my unit was not certified for Windows 8 and would not get any new software for Windows 8.  It's an old notebook, so this was expected.  However, your system does have a Windows 8 AMD driver for switchable graphics from HP, so I would start by making sure that specific driver is installed.

  • HD very noisy

    Hello all
    I have a 21.5 iMac mid 2011 that I got last Decembre.
Since 1 week now, the hard drive just started to be very noisy. I mean I can hear a scratchy noise coming from the back of the iMac. Noticeable as it was so silent before.
Should I bring it to the nearest Apple store as the warranty is still running?
What should I save before doing that?
    Thanks for your help.
    Regards

You should take this straight to an Apple Store, as the hardrive is dying. Please Please Please back the data up like now. If it goes you may loose everything.
What you are hearing is what we call in the IT world the Click of Death.

  • VERY NOISY i-MAC

My mid 2010 imac's fans are very noisy and I have had them fixed by Apple approx 5 times! It is happening again and I am trying to get to the route of the problem myself, and so have downloaded a fan control software. In the software you can control the speed of both the Hard drive fans and the Optical drive fans. However this does not control the fan which is making all the noise!!!! which fan is making the noise???
    Regards,

If the machine is still under AppleCare, take the machine back to Apple and request they replace the machine. They normally will after 3 repairs of the same problem assuming the machine is covered by AppleCare. BTW  you are not running OS X 9.0.x unless you have a Mac 10-12 years old. Please correct your profile so we know what version of OS X it is running.

  • Super Drive louder on new iMac?

We just got the new iMac home and am transfering our backups from cd/dvds and the super drive is considerable louder then the iMac G5 we took back. Is this normal for the drive in this iMac, or is this a problem whith my machine?

    Hallo,
I have the same or at least very similar question.
Just ordered the 21.5" imac with 1TB fusion drive. I need to transfer 450GB of photos from my old windows PC to the new imac set-up. This set-up will include some drive(s) for back-up, but not sure yet which drives.
Just moving the 450GB of photos to imac HD seems a bit much: with photos, applications and some other stuff 60-70 % of the imac HD would allready be consumed up right from the start.
I am using Lightroom for organizing, editing, etc.  of my pictures. So this should run as smooth as possible.
Any advice on a good configuration on how to work with iMac, Lightroom, 500 GB of pictures, external HD, back-up is welcome.
    thanks,
    Maarten

  • Apple Super Drive with MacMini mid 2010

Hello. Is it possible to use external Apple Super Drive with MacMini mid 2010? My internal drive seems to be out of work.

Most any USB DVD Drive will work just fine, plus tray loading drives are cheaper, faster and more reliable than slim superdrives.
I'm very happily using an LG GE24LU20 with my both older iMac's and Mac Mini.
