Very perculiar problem - People with serious mac networking kudos wanted!

My Time Capsule is having problems getting set up... story so far.
1) Set up flawlessly, transferred all my music, photos, etc to the TC disk.
2) Used airport utility to switch to ethernet connection to do some highspeed transferring of files (rather than wait for my slow g connection transfer rates)
3) Tried to reconfigure TC using airport utility back to wireless connection after I finished all transfers. Time capsule reset, green light came on, but it was no longer detected in airport utility. Have tried all sorts, resetting back to factory settings, deleting passwords from the keychain but it never shows up in airport utility....
Any ideas?

you don't need this step. next time leave your working TC preferences alone and just turn off airport on your Mac. Then assuming you have it connected by ethernet your good to go.

Problem saving files across Mac network

Hi all, hoping someone has run into this and can help—
We're running into a problem working with trying to find a way to have multiple users modify the same indd file without having to change the Sharing and Permissions on an individual file basis?

Not a server per se (and maybe that's the problem), but it's just one Intel iMac running Leopard with the InDesign files on it, and one newer iMac running Snow Leopard trying to read/work with the files. The protocol is AFP. For the second user (newer Mac) it forces a "Save As" instead of "Save" and then denies permission to overwrite the original. If they save the file locally and replace the original, the same thing then happens to the first user.
We've checked permissions on the files, and everything should be accessible. I'm wondering if the differing versions of the OS might have something to do with it, though I don't know why it would. Will upgrade anyway, but in the meantime Adobe keeps saying it's a Mac issue, and Mac keeps blaming Adobe. Thanks for taking the time to respond, btw.

Got Lion with new Mac mini and want to install on imac

Is there a way to register my purchase of lion on appstore so i can download it from there?

You'll have to pay for the App Store version of Lion needed for the iMac. The license for Lion that you get with a new computer is different from the App Store license, and doesn't provide for multiple installations.

My iphone is synced with my mac. I want to download a wma audiobook but not possible on my mac. I have a pc also. Can i download and transfer to my iPhone on my pc without messing up my sync with my mac?

The way to get Wma files on your iPhone takes a little bit of jiggering, but follow me: either install iTunes on a PC or partition your Mac and install XP there, then install iTunes for Windoz. Now, download Overdrive. Go to your library site, or wherever you get your WMA's and download with Overdrive, got that? Now open iTunes, and plug in your iPhone and check Manually Manage Music in iTunes. Go back to Overdrive and click Transfer. Note that iTunes must be open for this to work. It will install your book on your iPod, you can pause, bookmark and it'll even use the original artwork. Been doing it this way for years on an old iPod and now iPhone 4S. Do it once and you'll love it.

Problems working with files on network - RH9

I store my RH WebHelp source files on our company network. I follow Peter Grainge’s excellent advice on merged help by generating and publishing merged help to my local drives but I also publish to a second network location to make the help available generally. This worked fine till recently but lately severe performance problems have arisen. RoboHelp takes a long time to start up and even longer to open a selected project. Publication to a network location is so slow it’s no longer feasible. The tardy response to editing commands makes RoboHelp effectively unusable.
I’ve tried some fixes including those mentioned here on the forum. I installed the latest RH updates. Stopping non-windows services had no effect. I considered reinstalling in XP Mode but I’d prefer to avoid this option. Some Windows 7 tips I applied to improve network performance did no good. I drew a blank with our own company IT experts.
The only change to my local environment or to the network environment I’m aware of is that I took a Windows 7 recommended upgrade just before the problems set in.
I’ve had to resort to moving my source files to my local machine. This is not ideal from an information security point of view and in any case, publication to a network location from within RoboHelp is still not practical. I use RH 9 (version 9.02.271) on Windows 7 (SP 1), both updated in the past few days. I use a Lenovo W520 laptop: 2.7 GHz, 8 GB Ram, 64 bit OS.
I’d appreciate any suggestions which would allow me to open and edit projects directly from the network.

Colum, while RoboHelp 10 has "improved" upon network usage, I'm not sure it's recommended. Heck, I'm not sure I'd even claim it's safe!

Very real heat issue with Retina Mac

I'm running Temperature Gauge by Tunabelly Software, a trusted app. It has shown me several times in the last two days that two or 3 of the CPU cores report back as 90 C. Average fan speed coming in at 5065.
Am being cautious in how I use it - not on soft surface - all vents unobstructed - space between bottom of laptop and hard surface.
The app has actually suggested several times that I shut the machine down or close apps. I'm not running it that hard - actually ordered it with maxed out options so I could use it for much more than this.

Hmm...I've seen a couple of reports about Temp' Gauge. Run smcFanControl as well and compare the results.

We just moved from a Windows server to a Mac server with our Macs -problem!

We just moved from a Windows server to a Mac server with our Mac Network!!!
Problem:
Now, when we create files from our personal computers, no one else can write them. We can all read these files, but when we make changes we have to save a version! This wasn't happening on the Windows server, so I can only guess that it's a setting on the Mac? (G4 Laptop running 10.4.5)
Can anyone help me figure out what setting needs to be changed?

This is normal behavior, and is a result of the POSIX umask. Newly created files have their POSIX permissions (owner, group, and everyone fields) set such that only the owner can read and write.
The best way to solve this problem is to use an ACL entry to define desired permissions for a folder, specifying inheritance (e.g., permissions apply to this folder and any newly-created files or folders inside of that).

TS1559 My iPhone 3GS will not now join wifi. This is a very recent problem and I have tried everything so hope someone can help. I go Settings then Wifii, it picks up network no problem but then does not download IP Address.

I have tried all the fixes suggested I.e. network reset, airplane on then off but still nothing. I also have another iPhone of the same type and an iPad and they are just fine so I know it is not a router problem. Please please what do I do?

Try assigning Queen as the Album Artist on the compilations in iTunes on your computer.

Sleeping issue with new mac mini

i have a new c2d 2.0 mac mini all software is up to date. the first night i was able to put it to sleep without any problems but since then when i try to put it to sleep by eithre the apple menu or hitting (eject,apple,option) the dvd drive clicks and the mini wakes up all in 5 seconds.
another sleep problem is with both mac mini's (the c2d and g4 1.42) neither will go to sleep with an external harddrive connected (mounted or not and still powered on) I have looked for an answer to this problem for a while and have found nothing. i thought i saw a thread on this very subject but have yet to find it again

Hello,
It's nothing to really start worrying about, it's most likely down to a communication error between your hardware and your software. The simple solution is:
1) Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
2) Wait 15-20 seconds.
3) Press and hold the power button on the back of the computer
4) Whilst holding the power button, plug the power cord back into the machine
5) Release the power button
6) Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
Everything should be sorted! (if not, call back here)

What is the most compatible HD Hard Disk camcorder with a mac?

I'm looking to purchase a new High Def, Hard Disk camcorder, but I'm unsure what will be compatible with my Mac? I've read on this messageboard that tons of people have trouble getting these hard disk camcorders to sync with their Macs. I want to buy a Sony, but it seems that they are not very Mac friendly. It's not really an easy question for me to answer, I've gone from a pro DV camera to a consumer HD camera and in many ways I'm a little disappointed, but the comparison is hardly fair.
My hobbies are video and motor sport, so my cameras get quite a challenge and on occasions the HD camera falls short. But as I say it connects well, I have no reason to believe I bought the wrong consumer camera, (just shouldn't have bought a consumer camera) and there are some pretty cool features such as the 100 fps option (except I can't get that stuff off the camera yet)

I am about to purchase a livescribe smartpen which will record handwritten notes and audio and store them to a computer. Most of the promotion about the smartpen describes its use with a PC. How does it work with a MacBook Pro?

You may not get an answer here. I took a look at the Amazon reviews for the Lightscribe, and there were very few that dealt with the Mac, and the best review was decidely negative. Not good.

The hard drive itself is excellent. I have two external FireWire/USB 2.O drives, both of which contain Seagate drives similar in specification to the one you propose to buy, though both are 300GB in size. My question is whether the drive enclosure is a good buy (i.e. one that will work with your Mac). You want an enclosure with a good FireWire Bridge chip, such as the Oxford 911, which is known to work well with Macs. I looked at your link, but I could not tell which chip is found in the enclosure.
I would not buy this until you find out what kind of FireWire Bridge is in the enclosure.
You may wish to check out the selection at Other World Computing. This is a company that specializes in Mac products, so you know your product will work with your Mac. You'll pay a bit more for a similar hard drive at OWC than the one you are considering presently, but as they say, you get what you pay for. OWC backs it products with a great warranty, too.

Mac with serious problems

I was using my 2010 MacBook on the XDA forums when all of a sudden, it shut down in an instant. I restarted it, and it had problems with the time, it thought it was 2000. I thought "that was weird." Then I kept browsing, when it happened again. This time when I restarted it, it had the previous problems, and now my mac is excessively venting air (it is very loud and the mac is very cool already.) It also can't recognize the battery or charge it and in my bar at the top of the screen, the battery has an X on it. It is also much slower than it was. This all started last night, no issues of any kind before. I am running ClamXav as we speak and will post the results.

I suggest you shutdown, remove and re-install the battery (assuming the battery is removable). While you're at it, repeat the SMC reset procedure.
If at all possible, I'd try the battery calibration procedure next: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490
However, I would carefully monitor the battery during the charging process to make sure it doesn't overheat (very unlikely, but just a slight possibility).
