Very pleased with ordered hardcover book

I just wanted to post that I received my first hardcover book from Apple yesterday, which I created in Aperture 1.5.
After reading a large # of postings on this forum regarding less than stellar results seen by others, I wasn't sure what to expect. There are many reports of the cover photo looking good, but the pages looking poor (washed out, faded, etc). I decided to try one for myself.
What I found was that the book's colors were absolutely beautiful, and matched my system (fully calibrated display, etc) perfectly. The overall quality of the cover, paper, etc are excellent and I would certainly not hesitate to create/order another book.
This is the first book I created/ordered and is a 99-page hardcover, so I had my fingers crossed that the money ($100 plus shipping) wouldn't be wasted. I can honestly say that it exceeded my expectations.
I just wanted to share my 2-cents for others who may be sitting on the fence with similar hesitancy that I originally had.
best regards,
Tom

Hi,
Regarding calibrating your display, there are probably a lot of posts on this forum, or even on www.dpreview.com (great site for digital photography, and its forums) that probably go into a lot of detail with many different suggestions on hardware options, etc... If you do a search on "calibrating displays" I'm sure you'll find enough info to keep you busy for quite some time
For my display I use a "Monaco Optix XR" setup (calibration hardware/software) which is pretty straightforward to use. In essence, you attach the calibration sensor to a USB port of your computer, launch the software and it runs through a series of different different color patches on the display and uses the sensor to "read" the colors. From this, it creates a new "profile" which you then re-name and store in the profiles directory on your system. This new profile is then referenced on the system for all color management related items. That's a really simplified, high level description of what really happens under the hood, but for most users the process is pretty easy to follow. Most systems give very good step by step instructions on how to use them.
The link to the Optix XR can be found at:

Good luck, and hope this helped.

  • Very Pleased With My Apple Books

Just wanted to post and say how pleased I am with my recent Apple book order. Last week, I received 2 copies of a hard cover book that I spent over 3 weeks working on and I couldn't be more pleased, especially after reading of all the issues folks have had lately.
It was photos from a terrific 2 week trip to Sicily my wife & I took in September with our sister-in-law & her husband. Both couples were celebrating wedding anniversaries along with my birthday, so it was a very special event for us to say the least. We traveled all over the island and I wanted to make a book for us to remember it.
I have done books in the past - from 2003 on using iPhoto 3 thru iPhoto 6 for numerous vacations to national Parks, family events but I have to say this was simply the BEST.
The details of the book were 42 pages with 130 photos in many different page layouts using the Travel Theme. After working on it for several hours, I would save as a Print To PDF and then review my work in the 2 Page up mode to make sure the travel theme, placements, picture selection and text was satisfactory.
For the record, the quality of my digital images going in was excellent as pictures were shot on a 10 MP Sony A100, in RAW format, used Aperture to edit down to a total of 130 for this Sicily 2007 Book.
We had them delivered in time for the family to see at Thanksgiving and everyone was completely blown away by the quality etc. Since then we have taken it to show friends and folks who were interested in Sicily, photography etc and they are very impressed.
I had looked at Ritz & others after reading of the many issues others but decided to stay with iPhoto 8 and Apple for this one and extremely pleased I did. Now on to creating several other books that were in the pipeline!

No, you cannot do this with iPhoto. You'll need an external editor to do this:
    Acorn
    Graphic Coverter
    Photoshop Elements
are three - the first two have generous trial periods before you need to purchase, so you can check them out thoroughly.

  • VERY Pleased with my Photo Books!!!!

Since discussion boards often are overweighted with critical sentiments and questions of problems, I thought it would be worthwhile posting that I created two separate Photo Books, one of my daughter and wife, and another of my Father-in-Law's work overseas. Both turned out spectacularly! The colors of the template on one were a slightly different shade than I expected, but were still stunning. The photos, including many pictures converted and enhanced from old slides turned out much better than I thought possible.
Kudos to the Apple team on this one!

    Glad to hear it!

  • Very Pleased With Book Quality

Just received 17 copies of a 32 page hardback book (modern lines theme) of digital photographs my students at German Swiss International School in Hong Kong put together a couple of weeks ago. Used Aperture 2.1.2 and had been just a little concerned about what the quality might be like after reading a few posts in this forum...but I'm really very pleased with them all! The books look exactly as I had wanted and I'm sure the students will be delighted.
Will definitely be using this service again and will be encouraging staff and students at the school to do the same.

I happen to chime in and notice that there are some discussion related to Blurb BookSmart and Blurb book.
Here is my advice... be cautious. To produce a better book outcome, be SURE that you have calibrated your monitor. Or the output looks misery.
Also, be sure to download the ICC print profile for Blurb's outsourced printers that use HP Indigo printer and be sure to soft proof the images in Photoshop. I know it sounds like lot of work involved, but the dividend pay off nicely... along with time, effort, patience.
For those who prefer to use Adobe InDesign and Photoshop to do custom full-bleed design, it can be done with Blurb. The catch is that you need to use Blurb Booksmart app to import all of finished full-bleed layout design you created in InDesign and Photoshop (or even Illustrator).
There are lot of pretty nice helpful information and pointers with frame of references all over at Blurb Forums as well.
    Hope that helps.

  • I have just got my iPad2 and very pleased with it. I have a question regarding the monthly (recommended) battery full charge.  Should I let the battery completely die down to nothing at all or would this be bad for my iPad?

I have just got my iPad2 and am very pleased with it. I have a question regarding the monthly (recommended) battery full charge.  Should I let the battery completely die down to nothing at all before I plug in to recharge or would this complete drain be bad for my iPad?

It's not bad for it - on this page www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html it says :
For proper reporting of the battery’s state of charge, be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down).

  • I'm VERY pleased with my 1st MacBook Pro!

Often people post to complain about issues. i just wanted to post a message stating that i am very pleased with my MacBook Pro w/ Retina and 8GB RAM.
I switched from a Windows based system to my first Mac in December.  I use my laptop every day. I have not had a single issue with the MacBook up to this point.
I was able to print using my old Canon printer and even found a little app for my Omron BP Monitor which only comes with Windows software.
The MacBook Pro is a beautiful piece of technology.  Hopefully, it continues to be a smooth ride for me.

    Enjoy it.
    Best.

  • HELP WITH ORDERING A BOOK

I've been using iPhoto successfully for a while, and like making and ordering books.
My MacBook had a problem and the IT Manager sorted it - but everything was re-installed.
All is fine, but I'm trying to order a book, and when I click on the BUY button, nothing happens.
I've checked Preferences, registered on my account etc. I have no idea how to connect my book to the ordering facility. My internet connection is working.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    registered on my account etc.
Does that mean you went online and re-entered all of your Apple account information?
First try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder, launch iPhoto, reset its preferences and try again.
If that doesn't help, log into another account on your MBP, create a test library if there is no library there, create a quick test book and try the Buy button. You can abort the purchase process if the Buy button is working.
If the Buy button doesn't work in the other account a reinstall of iPhoto is warranted. To do so you'll have to delete the current iPhoto application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Now reinstall iPhoto from the disk it came on, apply the latest updater and try again.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • Very pleased with New Macbook

Hi Everyone, I just recently (August 4th) bought my very first Mac. I was researching and brousing laptops for about 2 months and being an avid PC user I wanted to try something different and refreshing.
I was looking for a laptop for college. Mainly because my first year at UC Santa Cruz I dished out most of my summer job savings on a Gaming\Media PC and was left labtopless for an academic year. Now a new summer job is in session and I saved up enough cash to purchase a laptop for my second upcoming year at my Univeristy.
The new Macbook definitely caught my eye. It was perfectly priced and since I attend a University that free iPod Nano and educational discount was a sweet deal. I'm glad I held off one year to get a labtop, it totally paid off. Though it was kinda a pain to not have a laptop durring college, I managed very well with my Gaming PC, doing essays and late night coding and programming assignments. Hehe..
The Mac's OS is pretty sweet with all the visual eye candy and its super user friendly setup - its hard not to fall in love with it. Even though I still use my PC for HD Media and Gaming, (I love my PC to death since I built it from scatch) I find my self using my new Macbook for email, work, school, iChat, brousing the net, etc.
My new Macbook is simply amazing. I've had it for about one week and I've had absolutely no problems with it what so ever. It runs cool acording to this forum's standards, currently 41 C at room temperature and 35 C in my air conditioned room. Initially the mouse button on the trackpad would get stuck for a fraction of a second when you pressed it dead in the center but that little annoyance fixed itself as soon as I started using my Macbook more and more often and now it works perfectly. The battery works fine. All the app's run great. No crashes, no random reboots, nothing... yet. Though I will be dual booting Windows XP Pro soon.. See how that goes.
It really hurts to see so many people getting frustrated with their Macbooks.. I really wish that their situations would turn out to be more like mine. My compassion and sympathy go out to you all and I hope that soon, real soon, Apple fixes and irons out all the problems and that you become happy and satisfied with your Macbooks.
As a first-time Apple product user, it kinda worries me to hear and read about all the neglect that some long-time Apple users are receiving from apple care and public relations. I really hope this doesn't reflect the whole company as a whole. It would really dissapoint me if at this time of becoming a new Apple user, the Apple company started giving the cold shoulder and becoming disconnected from its customers. In my eyes Apple seemed to be that loving and customer caring company that tried its very best to become near and dear to its customers by providing unmatched quality products to it's loyal customer fan base. I really hope they don't veer away from this mind set.
Anyways the upshot is, I just wanted my first post to reflect how I feel about Apple and my Macbook and restablish some confidence in the Macbook. From my experience it's a great quality product and I hope to enjoy it for a long time. You guys will definitely get any updates as I use my Macbook and be hearing from me more often.. I've been reading a lot on this particualr forum but have been quiet untill now. Thanks for reading..

Wow! Amazing, Christmas cards ordered on Dec 13th arrived this morning on the 16th. They look amazing and very high quality. Thank you, Apple for a fine program. I also love the trailer addition to iMovie app. Christmas has never been so much fun.

  • Problem with ordering iPhoto Book

clicked on Buy Book, entered all my info. including shipping address, clicked continue and error message pops up saying "unexpected error, please try again later"- tried until 10:00 p.m. Pacific time and again this morning several times beginning at 6:30 a.m.- overall tried at least 20 times- checked order history- nothing went through.
    NO luck!
    Any ideas?

Check if you have enabled 1-click ordering. It is necessary in order for you to purchase any Apple product.

  • Not Very Pleased With Zen Mi

It worked fine for about a day (two days actually), updated to firmware .0.03 battery life is maybe 5-6 hours even after update. I got two batteries with it so I have tested battery life on both batteries. Well today after I drained battery I put the fully charged battery in and the player froze 5 times. Each time the battery was put in the player auotmatically turned on ( I guess thats normal) and then the rebuilding library screen popped up. It went to the last song that was playing and froze. Repeated this 5 times before the player would respond. Once it unfroze I pluged in the USB cable (normally this would autolaunch Creative Play Center) now the player will not auto connect. I am afraid that I am having hard dri've error issues as well. I wish I would have know that this player had so many issues before I purchased it. Unless someone at Creative can help me out this player is getting returned and I plan on purchasing an Ipod Mini.Message Edited by godawgs on 2-3-2004 2:35 AM

    Godawgs,
They will certainly honor the warranty on it. If you contact support they will be able to set you up with an RMA (Repair/Replace). The only downside to this is that they are closed tomorrow for the Holidays and won't open until Monday morning and there is nothing I can do at this point (I am typing this from home...wanted to check on my forums before bed). If you call Monday morning someone will be able to help you out.
Overall I understand your feelings as I too have been on the not so fun end of a product that doesn't work. The one thing I do know is that the support advisors that handle these things really do care about setting things right. It's one of the advantages of having a support team that is 00% in house. There is also an email option if you would rather not call. If you do email, include a link to this thread explaining that you have already troubleshot the player and it was recommended by the Moderator that you get an RMA.

  • Very happy with archlinux

Guys i'm a long time linux guy here (1993+) and I was always a slackware die hard
and got a new dell inspiron 1525..... first i tried slackware base and was going to compile X/KDE myself....
then tried VectorLinux, I got frustrated at some things working, incomplete, etc. and found Arch.
I have to say, this is the *BEST* distro I have used and has really skyrocked my productivity.  I have in the
past compiled Inkscape by hand, as many know, there is a depency-hell with some programs and it takes
    forever to build.
you gotta love "pacman -S inkscape"
With Arch, everything works and yes if I have to, I can build from scratch but now I can actually
be productive and do things with pacman.  I had tried to run Zoiper (free IAX/SIP voip client) and it segfaulted
with dependecy problems on slackware, on Arch I just tried it and it works no problems.
I love the fact that everything on Arch is the latest.  I'm very very pleased with Arch and I think its great that it
follows the old school NO GUI installer simple philosophy.... the rc.conf is awesome... and I noticed Arch is very
fast.  Of course I compiled my own kernel so I wont use Arch for kernels,  but pacman is wonderful.
I could even set up a system for my mom or sister and have them periodically run pacman -Su to update the
system.... the problem with a lot of open source is you NEED to be on the latest versions to get the benefits...
releases like slack 11 10 12, etc... leave too much time go by to get the latest stuff.... with the "rolling distribution"
    concept this is really perfect....
I'm really impressed with the wiki/forums nice professional arch logo, etc.....
thanks to everyone who makes Arch so great!!!
    -jim

+1 I am using Arch third month now and I love it already
there is one sign of perfection I want to share:
a few days ago I had to look, where one program searches for configs, so I did
    strace program 2>somefile
the "somefile" was very short: in fact it was "strace: command not found"
so I installed strace and realized that for three months, especially for the first three months I am using this distro I *never* had to use this diagnostic tool: this is a very good sign, that I didn't come to serious problems and everything was very smooth : everything was solved either myself or searching this forum... arch rulez.
