Very poor Airport reception on mac mini

I've got a 1.4Ghz Mac Mini, and it's been running very well, except for the wireless networking.
next to my 1Ghz Powerbook, it's pathetic. The Powerbook has full reception, but the Mac Mini is stuttering around 1 to 2 bars even dropping to none.
I've even tried setting up my Airport Express within 2 feet of the Mac mini and I don't get full reception. I'm using a Belkin wireless router, but I know it's fine due to the Powerbook being just fine, oh, and I have a dual 533 G4 with a wireless card in which is getting a solid 4 bars despite being stuffed under the stairs and amongst lots of boxes etc!
I'm thinking I need to take the mini back to get it checked. The reception is awful and it's driving me nuts!

Well, I've fixed it.
I took my mini apart and found much to my dismay two things at fault.
Firstly, the antenna located at the rear of the Mini wasn't seated on it's plastic posts properly. That'll explain why the top of the mini was never flush, it had a bump and was raised up about 3mm. It also meant there was a black plastic tab that should have sat upright that was bent over, pushing the antenna upwards into the underneath of the plastic lid.
Secondly, the airport antenna wasn't connected properly, was only about half way in. Disconnected it and reconnected with a satisfying CLICK.
I put the little Mac back together and all is well, I've got a nice solid 4 bars reception. This is my first experience of a poorly constructed Apple computer.
Hope this might help someone else.
cheers

  • Poor Airport Reception - Antenna Problems

I get very sporadic airport reception with my PBTi connected to an Airport base station (clear/ice). It seems to be related to the internal antenna wire. In fact, I have found that if I take out my battery, the reception becomes tolerable, but is still ridiculously weak. I am about 20' from the base station and the only way to get good reception is to be a couple feet away.
Has anyone found a way to truly improve the antenna function? It does improve for a short while if a press the sides of the battery cavitity, but this is not workable if I am unplugged.

Being line of sight does not necessarily mean good comms. If you're in the wrong spot with the wrong conditions you can get 'destructive interference' - the same signal traveling over multiple paths can be added together and cancel out the signal - That's how noise reducing headphones work! However if you can move the Powerbook around and still get the issue then the problem lies elsewhere....

  • Poor Airport Reception in MBP

I just bought the 15" 2.16 GHZ MacBook Pro 2 days ago and have notcied the airport reception is flaky. When I am 2 rooms away from my router, I get 4/5 bars and then when I go downstairs, it fluctualtes from 1 bar to 4 bars - very inconsistent.
This never used to happen with my titanium nor does this happen with my Dad's iBook or Sony Vaio.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Should I take it back to the store?
    Thanks.
    Macbook Pro 15" 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I have genuine Airport Signal issues with my MacBook Pro, when sitting with the laptop IN CONTACT WITH the airport base station I can't get more than 75% signal, with it 2 feet away I'm at 50%, much more than 5 feet and I'm down to 20% and dropping signal regularly. Through walls? Not a chance.
Obviously, this is not normal behavior for a MacBook Pro, so I will be taking it in to the apple store - I just know that they are gonna ship it back to apple, and I don't want to be without my machine for a week, so I haven't quite got around to it yet.
I have tried multiple apple-branded airports, including the extreme and express I both own and severals others, as well as multiple 3rd party base stations. Signals and connection stability have been unusably poor in all cases.
I have ran all the latest software updates and firmware patches, and have wiped the hard drive and re-installed the entire system from scratch. No change.
I haven't found many other people complaining of similar problems, so I suspect I'm just unlucky. On the other hand, perhaps my antenna isn't plugged in or something simple. Even if that was the case, I doubt that the apple store itself would fix it so I gear up for shipment back to apple.
    Sigh.

  • General poor performance of my Mac mini

I have been using my mac mini for over a year, it continues to frustrate me how slow and unresponsive it can be even though I do very little with it, i.e organise photos and browse the web - usually looking for solutions to the poor performance problem!
I came a cross this app that has given me lots of information, unfortunately with my limited IT know-how there is nothing here that gives me any clues, as to the cause of the problem. I guess the red font is not good?
I'm sorry i can't be more specific about the problem other than to say that iPhoto and Safari the two programmes i use way more often than any other, keep giving me the beach ball. My internet speed is ok 25 Mbps down - 4.5 Mbps
Is there anything here that stands out as being wrong? if so any suggestions/ instructions for what I should do?
p.s. i had to quit Safari while writing this and have a report for this if it helps?
    Any help much appreciated.

    Hi Linc Davis
Thank you for taking the time to respond.
I got this information from a time when I was opening up iPhoto, and then going to the iCloud folder. To be honest it wasn't the most disastrous of events, I did get a few beachballs and when I opened up a shared folder the photos weren't loaded as normal. As I get more lengthy delays in carrying out any activities I will post back the console results.
Just as a bit more info, I don't consider my problem an update to Yosemite problem, if anything since updating performance has been improved from Mavericks.
Do you have any comments about upgrading RAM from the 4GB I have?
Should I act on any of the messages in red from the EtreCheck report?
    Many Thanks
    Duncan

  • 2011 macbook pro 17 poor airport reception

    Howdy.
I have a fairly new MB Pro 17" built in early 2011, details below:
    Model Name:          MacBook Pro
      Model Identifier:          MacBookPro8,3
      Processor Name:          Intel Core i7
      Processor Speed:          2.3 GHz
      Number of Processors:          1
      Total Number of Cores:          4
L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB
      L3 Cache:          8 MB
      Memory:          8 GB
      Boot ROM Version:          MBP81.0047.B1E
      SMC Version (system):          1.70f3
      Hardware UUID:          3F7D3A04-A3CE-524C-BD05-9C5E5776BB82
It's a great computer and is my 3rd unibody MacBook Pro - I update every year because of a salary sacrifice system at work!
I've never had a problem with airport on an MBP before, but the reception on this one is appalling in some situations - at home I have an Airport Extreme and the MBP works well with that.  However, when I'm at our Cabaret Club using an other wireless connection, my MBP is constantly losing signal.  In our venue I have a Mac Mini which connects to the wireless modem without a problem and, my colleagues MacBook's all seem to connect and mantain their connection without issue - it's just my MBP that has a majro problem.
Any ideas what I can do to try to rectify this - it's driving me nuts.
    Cheers.
    Phil.

    Hallo Uppe,
the Macbook Pro 17" (8,3) has a normal gamut display that in fact covers 98% of the sRGB and 75% of the AdobeRGB colorspace.
Here the sRGB colorspace (green) and the LCD colorspace (in red) compared:
...and there the AdobeRGB colorspace (in purple) and the LCD colorspace (in red) compared:

  • Very poor wireless reception on HP Envy 17t-j000

So I just recently got a  HP Envy 17t-j000 quad edition (Windows 8), which seems to be having some wifi issues
I opted for the cheaper non-bluetooth adapter, the Realtek RTL8188EE, which at present seems to have almost zero documentation on the internet. The Realtek website doesn't even show any record of it!
Anyways, here's the problem: I'm getting very poor reception with it, to the point where one of my two wireless routers has only very intermittent and horrendously slow connectivity, and the other will work a room away but no further (and also sometimes drops too, but less frequently). Outside of this range, I can still see these networks, but cannot always connect. If I do manage to connect, it will show a strong signal (4-5 out of 5 bars) but will never actually load anything. In fact, though I'm not sure this is relevant or not, I have never seen any networks with less than 3 out of 5 bars for signal strength.
Meanwhile, a number of other devices work at a much larger range and without dropping the connection as this computer does. This includes a year old HP (I forget the model) and a five year old Acer. The speed on my faster router doesn't appear to be very different between the HP Envy and the other two.
    I have:
    * Done a number of restarts of the network modem and both wireless routers
    * Verified that the driver on the wireless adapter is up to date and reinstalled it
    * Checked to make sure there are  no antivirus/firewall/other programs systems that could be interfering
So, does this sound like a just a crappy wireless adapter or could this be some sort of software issue or defective hardware? Also, if I were to just replace this with another wireless card, what sort of things do I need to be concerned with in order to make sure the replacement is compatible with the system?

    OK Boys & Girls - - here's what I did - -
First - the Envy X2 is having similar problems - but my laptop is the 17t-j000 quad
so this IS the correct thread - -
I used the HP support assistant - - it installed an updated BIOS -
The WiFi still shuts down at 8 - 10 min watching Netflix (no mouse or user inputs - Max signal strength indicated)
    {Yes - I have disabled allowing the machine to turn off power to the WiFi card in the driver section}
Loaded the Softpaq mentioned above (quoted below) - - 200MB - had to be SOMETHING in there ??
It loaded without a problem - - strange thing is - the Intel Driver date stayed the same: 9/17/2012
Tried the WiFi - - still shuts down at 8 - 10 min
Went back to HP Support Assistant - -
    NOW it says - - I need a new WiFi package ?!?
    So - I download and installed THAT - -
Back to Netflix - - and so far - has been NO SHUTDOWN ?!?
2 episodes watched - still connected - fingers crossed
Your mileage may vary - -
    Hi,
Download the Softpaq sp63183 from the below FTP link which should resolve these issues.
This Softpaq is for Windows 8 notebooks with an Intel Wireless card and should not be installed if they have another manufacturer like Broadcom , Realtek , or Qualcomm .

  • Airport Extreme and Mac Mini on different networks

    Hello ALL,
I am creatng a Mac Mini server. I have the Mac Mini connected via ethernet to my new Airport Extreme. I read somewhere that for server purposes, I should wire the mac mini versus using the wireless connection.  My Extreme is bridged with the Uverse 2wire modem and I have wifi disabled on it.  The problem I have s my ipad and iphones are all on the wireless network created . I use remote apps for the mac mini. As of now the remote apps do not recognze the mac mini becuse its connected via ethernet.  Any solutions for ths? Can i turn on Ethernet and Wireless at the same time?    THANKS!!

My Extreme is bridged with the Uverse 2wire modem and I have wifi disabled on it.
The it on the end of the sentence could equally refer to the Extreme or the 2wire.
I think you mean the Extreme.
Can i turn on Ethernet and Wireless at the same time?
The context suggests you are talking about the mac mini but you could equally well refer to the Extreme.
Do not mix up domains.. I think this is what the problem is. If you have wireless on the 2wire and the idevices are getting IP from the 2wire, they are also getting a domain.
Mavericks is very sensitive to domain. The domain by default on the AE is local .. but the domain on the 2wire could well be your ISP.
I would recommend you turn wireless on .. on the Airport Extreme.. not on the Mini. And see if the idevices when connected to the same domain can then also connect to the mini.
    Tell me your results.
A netstat scan is a great tool to use in the Mac.. open the network utility and see what you get for domains. See if the phone etc are on a wrong domain.

  • Very loud vibration from new Mac Mini DVD ROM drive

    Good evening all.
I bought a new design Mac Mini 3 days ago. Today I decided to re-install the OS and found the following :-
    1. The DVD drive makes a horrendous vibrating noise like an out of balance washing machine.
    2. The usual method of booting from DVD ROM is to turn it on whilst holding the C key down. Mine just freezes to a white screen. This is reproducible every time. This boot method method has always worked for my iMac.
    3. The alternate method of setting the boot disc in boot disc preferences to boot from DVD ROM worked on the second attempt. The first time it said Its own OS disc was an unformatted DVD ROM.
Anyone else with problems with VERY noisy DVD ROM and/or booting from its own DVD ROM ?
    regards
    videodrone.

Yeah my new mini does the same thing. Funny thing is that it doesn't d it all the time. I know the other day, I burned a DVD with iDVD which took about 8 minutes. It was so loud That I didn't even thing the DVD would've burned correctly but it burned fine.
I installed Grand Theft Auto 4 when I booted into Windows XP Pro and the Super Drive Went To all sorts of Speeds, but Know Vibration. *It's a random thing, or maybe these superdrive are very sensitive to imperfectly made Discs.* *I have a Late 2006 iMac 17" which is very sensitive to an HP Printer Install disc which vibrated like crazy. But with ALMOST every other disc I throw at it, it burns and spins just fine and quietly.* _It's like putting Regular 87 Octane Fuel into a Lamborghini, it will run terribly unless you put the good stuff/ Higher octane fuel in it._
Luckily or me, *I have a MacBook Air SuperDrive. These Drives do work on all the new Minis*. SO because of that, I'm not going to rush out for a repair right now. Unless I know in advanced that I will be in the same area of the Apple Store ( 25 miles Away / 50 miles round trip) ).

  • Looking for installation manual for Airport / Bluetooth in Mac Mini (PPC)

    Hi,
Last year I purchased a Mac Mini as an additional Mac. At the time, Wireless, and bluetooth were not available as a complete package from resellers. I bought the Airport / Bluetooth kit for the Mac Mini and want to install it.
I have been searching for the Manual to download. Can anyone help me.
BTW, I have a technical background, and have designed/built logic and RF electronics. But I want a guide, so as I do not assume.
    Thank you,
    John

Welcome to the Apple discussion forums.
Video showing how to take the mini apart can be found at http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/index.cfm?page=Video/directory.html Note installation of the wireless/bluetooth isn't addressed, but getting into the box is shown.
A memory replacement that does show the airport/bluetooth cards is at http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/82.13.0.html
Perhaps with the other references, this will provide a basis to know what you're diving into.

  • Poor airport reception

I'm getting terrible airport reception. Yesterday I was in a room with two other powerbooks and they both got great reception and I couldn't stay connected for more than ten seconds. This is not the first time. Here in my office I can't use my powerbook wireless but other people can. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Oh, I have a powerbook 15 inch, 1.25 Ghz.

I haven't any suggestions, but I seem to have exactly the same problem with my new powerbook. I can't achieve anything like the reception quality that I am getting from my 12 inch Powerbook. I virtually have to be in the same room as the base station to get decent reception, whereas I can use my 12 in ch powerbook anywhere in the house or garden.

  • Airport Extreme + MBP + Mac Mini

hi all. i am really not into networks that much. so forgive me if i sound like a 5 year old. (nowadays even 5 year olders are experts anyway). i have an airport extreme and a macbook pro and a mac mini wirelessly connected to it. Mac mini has external hdd attached to itself and uses as it's time capsule. I've attached another one to the airport extreme as a time capsule for the mbp. the thing is i cannot access the hdd attached to the airport extreme by any means. and the airport extreme itself does not recognize the drive either. if i attach it to the mbp it is recognized and the system asks if i want to use it as a time capsule. but when i attach it to the airport extreme, even in the airport utility>disks tab i dont see it. and in finder i do not see my airport extreme under the shared on the left column. but the mbp and the mac mini are visible to each other. i'd appreciate if anybody can give me a heads up on this.
    the os is 10.7.3

I've attached another one to the airport extreme as a time capsule for the mbp. the thing is i cannot access the hdd attached to the airport extreme by any means. and the airport extreme itself does not recognize the drive either
Apple does not officially support Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port of the AirPort Extreme, so that might explain some of the difficulty here.
Some users seem to be able to make this work, while some have only some success and some (like me) have no success despite repeated attempts.
If you want to try this anyway, the drive must be formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and a powered USB hub is often required for the hard drive.....even if it has its own power supply.

  • AirPort Wireless Leopard Mac-Mini  Setting the MTU size

Does anyone know how to set the MTU size for the wireless ?
Setting the MTU on the Ethernet is easy now that an Advanced>> custom is available for the Ethernet interface. But no such interface exists for the Wireless NIC card. The MAC default = 1500 and for use in PPTP VPNs that causes issues and I would like set the MTU to 1200
PPTP works great with Ethernet set for 1200
also using Fusion and windows VM I can set the MTU size for the wireless and PPTP works great inside the Windows VM
Now if i could just set the MTU for the wireless when operating in normal MAC OS

Open a terminal window, and, assuming your airport interface is called "en0", enter the following command :
    +ifconfig en0 mtu 1200+
You'll have to do this each time you restart the system, though, so you might want to setup a startup script yourself or use a third-party utility to do so.

  • MacBookPro has poor airport reception

My MBP only has a fraction of the reception of our MacBook. It seems to be getting worse with each OS upgrade. Each time the computer starts it takes a long time to scan and find any wireless network. We are not using Real Player 11.

if reseating the card and making sure the connection is okay doesn't do anything, you should try pulling the /library/preferences/systemconfiguration folder to the desktop and restarting the computer. make sure you are familiar with your network settings, as this will wipe them out and you will have to reconfigure them. so if you are unsure about anything, then write them down. if that doesn't work, the next thing i would do is a hard reset of the airport extreme base station and create a new wireless network. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107451 i know this sounds absurd, because the other computers are working fine, but i have seen it work many times so it is worth trying!! good luck. • Anyone FINALLY see an improvement in Airport reception with Mac OSX 10.5.7

Well as you know, it ain't no secret that airport is krap when it comes to MBP's and wireless. Anyone FINALLY see an improvement with 10.5.7? I just updated and besides the revolving blue screen of death
(yes, the loop that's running rampid here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2004356&tstart=0 and had to do a hard shut down and reboot in order to escape the loop)
has anyone seen an improvement? Or is Apple gonna wait on fixing this age old 'issue' till OSX 10.6 comes out? (Or maybe even beyond)
I know it's too early to tell, but anyone have comments?

"It's already been off to the service centre and they said it was a setting in network settings. WRONG"
Since you are so sure that it's not the settings, then take the comp back to the repair shop for them to find out what is really wrong!
When it’s time to pick up your computer from the repair shop:
    * Before you leave the repair shop, make sure you have the repair tech(s) power the comp up and demonstrate that it is indeed working & repaired properly to your satisfaction.*
