Very Poor Video

My video starts out okay then quickly disintegrates to a very delayed signal. I checked Audio, Connection Doctor, and my bit rate and frame rates are about 1/10 the rate they should be.
I have checked with Apple tech. support and they have no answers. I checked with my local Apple retail store and they had no answer. It's as if my connection to the internet is being squeezed and only allowing the data through at a very reduced rate.
Any suggestions??

This is very frustrating,
I have the same problem with frame rate dropping to almost standstill after a few seconds. The other end is fine.
I am using iChat on my Mac mini on the same wireless network (under Leopard) with no problem so no issues with ISP, Modem/Router.
I've played with the QT settings as suggested but no luck.
This happened a month or two back and just as I was cloning the system, my hard drive died. I thought the flaky behaviour might have been related to the drive as when the new drive went in things were resolved. Now I've mysteriously got the problem back.
I've reverted to a known good system copy with no iChat/QT plug-ins and the problem is still here. I'm on 10.4.10 on my PowerBook.
iChat was the only reliable contact that my kids here in Oz have with their Granny in the UK. It drives me mad that this has become so unstable!

  • Very poor video quality after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!
I have very poor video quality after transcoding the video file (MPEG) in  Adobe Encore CS5.1. Below you see my used settings in my filmproject.
The problem exists after transcoding in Adobe Encore CS5.1. I checked all steps and found out that there is no problem until transcoding. My exported file  in MPEG has very good video and audio quality.
    Facts:
    1. Camcorder: Panasonic AG-AC160AEJ
Operating System : Windows 7, 64 Bit, Ultimate edition
    Source files: MTS files
    Recording settings (clip settings):
    Type: MPEG Movie
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Frame Rate: 25,00
Source Audio Format: 48000 Hz - compressed - Stereo
Project Audio Format: 48000 Hz - 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1,0
    2. Sequence settings in Premiere Pro
Sequence was created from Clip directly with settings above.
    3. Exporting settings in Adobe Premiere Pro:
Match sequence settings was activated. Now other changes were set.
    4. Exported File:
    Video
    Image Size: 1920 x 1080
    Data Transfer Rate: 25920 kBit / s
    Frame rate: 25
    Audio:
    Bit rate: 384 kBit / s
    Channels: 2 (stereo)
    Frequence: 48 kHz
    5. Transcoding settings in Adobe Encore:
I used different transcoding settings such as automatic DVD Transcoding, CBR and VBR.I also set “use maximum render quality”. But all results were always the same: very poor quality.
Why does the encore transcoding cause such bad video quality?
How can I solve this problem?
    Please help me soon.
    Best regards.

    Hi Ann,
    1) I did not only „Automatic (based on source)“ options in my tests, but also many other customized options.
The results are very poor. I have done a new test with the following settings. The result is also poor:
    Download link: http://www.klavierlehrer-bayern.de/download/test_mpeg2dvd_1.m2v
    Export Settings:
    Format: MPEG2-DVD
    Preset: Custom
Codec: MainConcept MPEG Video, Quality: 5
    Frame Rate: 25 fps
    Field Order: Upper
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Automatic (based on source)
    Render at Maximum Rate: [active]
    Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 pass
    Minimum Bitrate (Mbps): 5
    Target Bitrate (Mbps): 9
    Maximum Bitrate (Mbps): 9
    GOP Settings
    M Frames: 4
    N Frames: 12
    Use Maximum Render Quality: [active]
    Multiplexer: None
    2) Why shouldn’t I use the “Match Sequence Settings” in exporting? Because of the big output file size?
I used it and the results are very good as I expected:
    Download link: http://www.klavierlehrer-bayern.de/download/test_MatchSequenceSettings.mpeg
    Export Settings
    Match Sequence Settings [selected]
    1920 x 1080, 25 fps, Upper, Quality 50
    User Maximum Render Quality: [active]
    3) I tried also Dynamic Link in PremierePro (to Encore).
    The results are also poor.
    4) I will test also LagarithLoslessCodec and frameserving +DGMPGDec. But the video is vertical long drawn-ot.
I think I did not use it correctly.
    Regards

  • Very poor video streaming from youtube

I cannot watch a single video from youtube or any other site. I have OS v6.0.0.522. Is there anything i can do?? It will play a video for a few seconds then just starts to buffer. I have a BB 3G 9300 with Sprint

Hello mikeswitzer. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
As you have already figured out poor signal strength equals poor bandwidth performance. This, of course, will be noticeable for both audio and video streaming.
I suggest downloading a copy of iStumbler. Use iStumbler's Inspector feature (select Edit > Inspector from iStumbler's menu) to determine the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) at different points around your house, by performing a simple RF site survey. Within the Inspector, note the values for "signal" & "noise" at these locations. Start with your MacBook near the Time Capsule (TC), note the readings, and then, go to the location where you currently have the Mac Mini.
SNR is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs.
The SNR, as measured from the MacBook, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR.
    SNR Guideline
    o 40dB+ SNR = Excellent signal
    o 25dB to 40dB SNR = Very good signal
    o 15dB to 25dB SNR = Low signal
    o 10dB to 15dB SNR = Very low signal
    o 5dB to 10dB SNR = No signal
If the SNR is 20dB+ at the Mac Mini, then you should be getting reasonable performance from your TC. If less, either try to locate the source of the Wi-Fi interference or try relocating either the TC or the Mac Mini until they are within a 20dB SNR range.
Another option is to utilize a transceiver on the Mac Mini to try to increase the Mini's built-in AirPort antenna ability to pick up the signal from the TC. One vendor that provides these is QuickerTek.

  • Very poor video podcast performance

Computer is older (P3/1000, ATI 9550 video@1280x1024, Win2K, Quicktime 7.1.5.) Yes, I am looking at getting a new computer this summer, after some of the Vista issues are more settled.
I am having major issues trying to play simple video podcasts. Most of these are only 128K, such as Vintage Toons. Playing them results in 90%+ CPU, and only if I keep it original size and only play it directly in Quicktime player or RealPlayer. Playing them in iTunes is impossible, as iTunes itself is a major CPU hog. Doing most anything causes the video to freeze and sputter and even disappear. RealPlayer works best (I can even move the video around while playing without it stopping!) I can't play anything full-screen cleanly.
Quicktime is set to use DirectX, and Windows and DirectX are up to date. The video drivers are Catalyst 5.8. I don't think there is anything in the newer Catalyst drivers that will do much for an entry-level card like this.
This seems to have gotten MUCH worse with the latest iTunes/Quicktime upgrade.
I can play much higher bitrate (1M+) Windows Media files with few if any glitches.
      Windows 2000

Most new QuickTime files use H.264 Video codec which cause a strain on older machines and graphic cards (and drivers).
Not much you can do except upgrade your machine.
You may be able to mitigate performance issues by setting QuickTime Preferences to not use DirectX (QuickTime Control Panel).

  • Very Poor Video Quality

I was trying to iChat with my daughter this afternoon and the video quality was horrible. She was pixelating large and small, trailing, etc. I think it may have something to do with the refresh rate. She has a new MacBook, which I assume is running 10.5.6. Any ideas?

    Hi Defcom,
thanks to you man, finally my iChat Video is working. After fiddling around for several weeks and not finding the answer, I saw your recommendations for the Quicktime-streaming and the bandwide maximum, put it to work and now iChat is working.
    Thanks to you man.
This leeves the question why such important information is nowhere to be found in the documentation of iChat. This is a serious omission in my opinion. Look at how many people have problems with iChat Video! And then such a simple solution, just somebody has to tell you.
    Thanks alot again defcom.

  • [SOLVED] Very poor video frame rate after upgrade

I'm relatively new to Arch, having been a Slackware user for many years (since Slack 3.5), so please treat me gently!!
I installed Arch about a month ago from the network and had everything running well, including Firefox 4.0. Today when I started the PC and ran Firefox, I received a message recommending that I install Firefox 4.0.1. I duly downloaded the Arch package for FF 4.0.1, but it wouldn't run, complaining that it couldn't load XPCOM. I searched through the Arch forums and found a suggestion to run Pacman -Syu to upgrade the system. This upgraded around 140 packages, including quite a few Xorg ones.
Now I find that watching any sort of video in Xorg (e.g., The BBC weather forecast in Firefox or BBC Iplayer, or even glxgears), the frame rate particularly at full-screen is abysmal, dropping as low as around 2 (two!) frames per second. Glxgears manages around 9 frames per second. Before today's system upgrade, glxgears achieved exactly 60 frames per second at any screen size and BBC video was smooth at full-screen.
I'm guessing that the problem is somewhere in an upgraded Xorg package, but I'm completely in the dark as to where to start looking. There are no obvious problems reported in /var/log/Xorg.0.log. I could post the content of this file if required, but it's huge and would make an extremely long post.
Please could someone offer me some guidance on where to start looking for the problem and how to fix it. The hardware I'm running on is Asrock 890FX deluxe 3 motherboard, Phenom-II 955 CPU, Asus 1Gb Radeon HD5570 video card. 'uname -a' reports that the kernel is 2.6.38-ARCH.
I hope I've posted this in the right forum. If not, please advise accordingly!
Thanks in advance for any clues!
    Gerald.

The files in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder are the standard ones, so they should not be the problem.
I've looked in your xorg.log, and while the problem is not clear immediately, you got several (WW) and (EE) messages in it.
[ 27.795] (WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/OTF/" does not exist.
[ 27.795] Entry deleted from font path.
[ 27.836] (WW) `fonts.dir' not found (or not valid) in "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/".
[ 27.836] Entry deleted from font path.
    [ 27.836] (Run 'mkfontdir' on "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/").
    these are safe to ignore
[ 27.837] (WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
without acpid installed, your monitor probably won't be blanked when you're system is inactive for a while, but otherwise this should not be  a problems.
(EE) Failed to load module "vesa" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
vesa and fbdev are intended as fallback options, it's better to install them.
    pacman -Syu xf86-video-fbdev xf86-video-vesa
[ 27.935] (WW) xf86OpenConsole: setpgid failed: Operation not permitted
[ 27.935] (WW) xf86OpenConsole: setsid failed: Operation not permitted
These lines may have to do with your problem, but i don't know what they mean.
    we need more info.
run gxlinfo , and post the  output from top until the line with OpenGL extensions:

  • Poor video from Leopard to Tiger

I've used iChat between an iMac and a MacBook almost daily for a year. At Christmas I upgraded the iMac to Leopard. iChat works, but I now get very poor video quality at the MacBook end. The connection doctor shows that typically my local bandwidth is around 200 - 300 kb/s but the other way is around 50 kb/s. Nothing changed in my router or any of the other networking hardware to the best of my knowledge.
Has anyone else experienced this? Any suggestions to improve the performance. Previously with Tiger at both ends the connection and video was usually fairly good and the connection rate more even.

Ralph: I have the exact same problem. Here is my output:

  • Very poor quality ichat video

I am new to ichat and I have very poor quality video links with my family. One in CA and the other in TN both are on macs. They are both very fragmented and broken up. Also there is a huge delay in the audio. Please help....I can't see my new nephew. Thanks

i am also having issues with my ichat video quality, and there is a delay on audio sometimes. i chat with my friend in philly; i am in brookyn, ny. sometimes the audio is in sync, and then sometimes we have a delay. but the video quality is so blurry on my end...i can barely see her. but her video of me is fine. my preview screen looks great, the connection doctor says everything is good.
i'm not very good with macs tho and computer jargon. i need someone to help me, but who can walk me thru this stuff like im in first grade.

  • Poor Video (iPod to TV)

I have audio and video when I try to view my iPod on a TV, but the video is very poor. I originally read that you had to cross connect the cables (that somehow the signals did not match up with the rca cables). At any rate, I tried that with no success. I finally bought cables by Re Trak specifically for iPod to TV. Still, I am having no success. As I said, I can get the sound, but the quality of picture is extremely poor. The quality of the file should be good as I downloaded it from iTunes (TV Shows). That said, even when I convert my own files using third party software, I have the same problems. Surely, someone out there knows how to resolve this issue.
    Anyone?

The quality of the picture is only as good as the original video. Many videos look very nice in iTunes (in the small window) or on the iPod with the video only being 320x240 but this is only HALF the normal size (actually one quarter) so on the TV is it blwon up to fit the normal 640x480 (actually 720x480 but that is another discussion) so it likely will look cruddy.
So the first question is, the video your are trying to watch on the TV, are they lower than 640x480 in resolution?

  • TV Anywhere poor video capture quality

I have a Celeron 1.7, 20 and 60 gig hd at 7200 rpm, 512M of ram. My capture is of very poor quality. I have used the MSI software and also Virtual Dub. Still poor video capture quality. Anyone tell me what I can do or how to do this right?
    geo-ela

If you use a compressing codec in real time, you need lotsa CPU.
Try using a lossless codec such as Huffyuv (you'll need lotsa disk) for the real time capture and then compress afterwards.

  • Linking Macbook Pro to TV (Poor Video Quality)

    Hello All,
I had a 2 questions regarding linking my video from my MacBook Pro to my TV. I bought the cable that allows me to display videos etc on my TV, but the graphic quality was very poor. The TV is HD and only 2 years old, and my MacBook is brand new with 512 video card.
    1. After connecting and getting the video to display on the TV the picture quality was grainy and the color was off. Is there a way to improve the picture quality &/or a link to a idiots guide for doing this.
    2. I will be teaching soon and I wanted to be able to display Flash &/or video clips on a projector in front of the class, but I dont want the quality to be poor (as in the problem above).
Any help would be greatly appreciated, even if its just pointing me to a cite with more info on how to do this.
Thank you again for your help,
    Valance

I am having the same problem, hooking up a MBP Core 2 Duo to a Samsung HD LCD. My display settings are 1080p and I am connecting from DVI to HDMI.
My problem is the same, that the image appears grainy and the color is way off. Tried some different color profiles, but I am dissapointed that my HD show doesn't seem to be the same HD quality that I am used to in real HD broadcasts.
Also looking for good tips or an idiot's guide.

Before buying a second-hand computer, you should have run Apple Diagnostics or the Apple Hardware Test, whichever is applicable.
The first thing to do after buying the computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. Changes made by Apple over the years have made this seemingly straightforward task very complex.
How you go about it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It's unsafe, and may be unlawful, to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
    1. If you don't own another Mac
    a. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine is very old and has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
    b. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received the media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
    c. If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
    d. Some 2010-2011 models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you can't reinstall 10.6 even from the original media, and Internet Recovery will not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
    2. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    3. Partition and install OS X
    a. If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
    b. Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In the  Partition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
    c. An unusual problem may arise if all the following conditions apply:
OS X 10.7 or later was installed by the previous owner
The startup volume was encrypted with FileVault
You're booted in Recovery mode (that is, not from a 10.6 installation disc)
In that case, you won't be able to unlock the volume or partition the drive without the FileVault password. Ask for guidance or see this discussion.
    d. After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
    e. Run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    4. Other issues
    a. If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
    b. If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
    c. When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an iCloud account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information. The setup limit doesn't apply to Apple ID accounts used for other services, such as the iTunes and Mac App Stores, or iMessage. You can create as many of those accounts as you like.

  • Result of idvd burned DVD is very poor (only windowsorigin files)

    Hi folks,
I'm trying since some days to get a windows file (mpg) on to a DVD. After converting the file to the varoius formats like mpg, mp4, mov and dv I get always a very poor quality DVD. As I changed also the bitrate to 16000 bits/s nothing changed.
I'm wondering if there is a little trick on that?
My problem is that my VCR is windows based therefore I get the windows format and I have to convert them with FFMPEG. Also I had imported movies via my old Casette-VCR / Handycam and no problem Quality was 100%
I'm now very confused how I can solve the problem because from time to time I'd like to archive some recorded shows or movies.
Does anybody have an idea how to solve this? Any comment his highly appreciated

I am guessing the Windows MPG format is referring to Microsoft's DVR-MS format which is basically an MPEG2 in a different envelope. ffmpegx will convert DVR-MS on a Mac.
I recently processed some MPEG2 files using ffmpegx myself. I set it to pass the audio through without conversion and to convert the video to MPEG2 with the same resolution and bitrate as the original (which was 4350kbps). This seems to have produced excellent results when then burnt to a video DVD using Toast. Toast unlike iDVD can directly accept MPEG2 files (although not DVR-MS).
Prior to that I had occasion to want to convert two MPEG files to an iDVD project and iDVD will not directly accept MPEG1 or MPEG2 files. If I had merely converted them to MPEG4 or other typical format then I would loose a fair amount of quality. Instead I converted them to Pixlet format at high quality (more than really needed) which minimised the degradation that occurred. iDVD then imported those files happily. The Pixlet files while I was using them where 10 times as big as the originals!

  • Very poor quality capturing standard-dv from an HD-DV camera

I used a Sony HDV-FX1 to record standard (non-HD) dv video at 16:9 which looks fine in the camera and on the screen during playback but when I actually capture the footage, the video quality comes out very poor ( http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/2636/videocaptureen5.png ). HD recordings from this camera capture perfectly but I can't seem to capture standard-dv video at any acceptable quality. I've tried this in FCP5 and iMovieHD and both are equally bad. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks,
    -Tom

DV video is VERY compressed. 5:1 and in a 720x480 frame. OF COURSE it will look worse than HD. HDV is 1920x1080, A LOT more pixels to work with.
And never ever EVER judge the quality of your footage using FCP or quicktime. EVER. That is NOT what your footage really looks like.
Shane's Stock Answer #2: Blurry playback
ONLY JUDGE THE QUALITY OF YOUR MATERIAL ON AN EXTERNAL NTSC MONITOR, OR AT LEAST A TV.
The canvas shows you what happens after the codec you are working with has been applied. The viewer shows you the material in its native format.
    1. Disable overlays on the canvas
    2. Make sure you've rendered everything (no green bars at the top of the timeline
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24787
Video playback requires large amounts of data and many computations. In order to maintain frame rate and be viewable at a normal size, only about one-fourth of the DV data is used in displaying the movie to the screen. However, the DV footage is still at full quality, and is best viewed thru a TV or NTSC monitor routed thru your camera or deck.

  • Poor video Quality when exporting to DVD

I cant seem to get a clear video. I am downloading from DV from a canon and the quality is sentational.
When on the time line averything is brilliant. When rendereing everything is still ok.
When exporting to DVD it goes pear shaped. I have tried dozens of different variations with the same results.
I am in AUstralia and am using PAL.
I get motion blur and what appears to be very poor quality result after exporting.
Help... I dont have much hair left.
    Premier Pro Tragic

    @Harm,
"Pear-shaped" (or sometimes "fruit-shaped") is a euphemism meaning that the effort has gone awry; it was a mess.
    @John,
Export to DVD is a PPro 2.0 function; in CS3 it is now Export to Encore. Is that what you meant?
First thing is to check the field orders of your source material and of your export settings. Don't invert them, and don't deinterlace interlaced footage.
Perhaps a short list of the settings you have tried (and why you chose those settings) would help us help you.
