Very Pretty White Hair Dryer

Whilst by no means new to Macs, I am new to problems with Macs.
Yawn topic I am afraid, fan noise! Now, I would not normally winge about a thing like fan noise but I am deaf in one ear and partially deaf in the other so have to use a hearing device. Needless to say I pick up fan noise in preference to anything else going on around me. The culprit fan is top right near the superdrive. I have had my G5 Rev B for over a year and this has only started in the last couple of weeks.
System monitor reveals nothing unusual except the item below.
0 kernel_task root 0.60 44 72.59 MB 915.52 MB PowerPC
CPU temp is 51C using Temperature Monitor V3.7 whilst writing this with no other apps open.
CPU Fan = 4060 rpm
System Fan = 4000rpm
I have reset SMU. Fans were quiet for a couple of days then "blow dry sir!" I have read the other threads on this topic but nothing seems to fit.
Any suggestions on what the kernel task is likely to be?

Welcome to the discussions!
Your temps are great, so the fans are likely spinning up due to something in the fan control software.
How do you update the OS? Do you use software update, or take the extra time to download the combo updaters instead? I have seen problems pop up when using software update that were resolved by applying the combo over it.
Also, follow the standard procedure for OS updates including repairing permissions before and after applying and making sure that all USB/FW devices except the keyboard and mouse are unplugged during the update. Be sure to backup all data just to be safe. I clone by hard drive to an external FW drive using SupeerDuper, but be sure to at least backup the stuff you cannot afford to lose.

My ipod was submerged in water momentarily. I have dried it with a hair dryer and have placed it in the sun for 1 hour.  It will now turn on but will only bring up the connect to itunes screen. When I connect to itunes it is not recognized because it is locked with a security code. I have tried to reset the ipod using the instructions in the user manual to no avail. The accessibility screen is functional because I can turn on/off the voice over and the black and white screen. I think I am making progress but cannot unlock it. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks

Unfortunately, using a hair dryer or placing the iPhone in sunlight, at best, will dry the outside of the device. If water got inside, it may still be possible that this water has not dried and can short out the internal battery or cause other circuit damage ... and what you are seeing may be the results of that. I would recommend that you leave the iPhone turned off and take it to your local Apple Store. They may be able to help, but I wouldn't expect them to offer you a replacement. Sorry!

  • Fan noise like a hair dryer at full blast

    Hi there,
I have had this IMac G5 (1.8G) since beginning of 2005, every time I go to a web site which has flash - my IMac fan goes on very loud noise like a hair dryer at full blast.
Does anyone know what the problem is? and how do i fix it?
    Thank you for your help,

How much RAM do you have? Did you check the Apple extended warranty that I mentio0ned in the other thread?

  • When your Lenovo Twist makes a noise like a hair dryer -

I apologize for my English, but I have something to say.
Trying to finish my PhD thesis, I decided to buy one of the last Lenovo creations, the ThinkPad Twist.
Bought the last February, the fan noise becomes more and more like a hair dryer that never stop; I can’t work more than one hour because the noise is hardly resistible. I took the laptop to the library and the noise stop the calm of the place…
After this incident I tried to contact the support center to have one solution. This is my history:
First call to Lenovo support center, I explain the situation, a fan that never stop and sound like a hair dryer…. Answer: They propose me send the computer to the repair center: “tomorrow UPS will take the computer”. Just here fine, but I didn't’t receive the e-mail confirmation.
Second call, I give the number that they told me to write over the box for UPS , and I ask for the confirmation mail… they send me the confirmation mail and finally the Lenovo Support Center guy told me that UPS wouldn't’t go to my home to take the computer, according with my warranty, it’s my responsibility to the send the computer to the support center…
-So I decided to change my warranty to have the “On site/In-Home Service”, that means “a technician will be dispatched to arrive onsite, typically the next business day. *** Onsite service is available in metropolitan areas only”, and I live in Paris. -
Upgrade warranty bought May 02, 2013 (Thursday) and activated the next day (Friday). I decided to call the support center to update my request. The answer: "One technician will go to your home the next business day (Monday)", so I give all the details to arrive to my home, I change my schedule to be at home all the Monday  and finally the technician never came… Only one guy of UPS to that one box. o.O
Next call to support center (LSC), I explain the situation “I wait for a technician who never came…”. Explanation from the support center: “Lenovo France have to forward one request to confirm my new warranty” but…. I explain: The warranty was activated in the website, in my computer and I received a lot of confirmation mails… So I ask, what I have to do? – Answer: wait….
Next day, next call to LSC, I ask for the situation of my request… Answer“Lenovo France have to forward one request to confirm my new warranty” but…. I explain: The warranty was activated in the website, in my computer and I received a lot of confirmation mails… So I ask, what I have to do? – Answer: wait….
7,8 cents for each call and 2,8 cents by minute of communication is the introduction phrase of the LSC number.
Today I called to LSC, May 10, 2013 (Friday), ONE WEEK after the upgrade warranty activation I ask for the situation of my request… Answer “Lenovo France have to forward one request to confirm my new warranty”but... I explain: The warranty was activated in the website, in my computer and I received a lot of confirmation mails… So I ask, what I have to do? – Answer: wait…. We will call you…
I am very disappointed. I was thinking that I had the most powerful computer in the market, one of the best Lenovo that all my coworkers talk. I am really unhappy, my new computer sound like an expensive hair dryer (1000 € - yes, euros)  and the people that should help only tells me to wait - “we will call you when validate in France your warranty” - but…. The warranty is activated.
If my computer makes a noise like a hair dryer at least you have to know, do not you think?

Hi Emilio, welcome to the forums,
sorry to read about your experience so far and would like to share some points which you might like to consider based on my personal experience as an IBM / Lenovo reseller.
In most of Europe the standard warranty conditions are for so called "carry-in" or "bring-in", this means that the customer is responsible for transporting their system to the service depot / partner, by post or other means.
Also it can take a little while, sometimes three weeks, for an on-site warranty extension / service pack to be fully activated when purchased some time after the system itself, even in the IBM days, and would not cover a call which had already been opened / started.
As your system is working, although the fan seems to be permanently running, you may need a little more patience and let's wait and see if they will cover your already opened call as an on-site.
I know this isn't maybe what you wanted to read, but is based on my experience, and as experiences will differ I can only hope that the right solution arrives for you a little quicker than I personally would expect.

  • Using a hair-dryer to resurrect a dead iMac CTR!

I visit this forum often enough to see how many people are finding it hard to get their old (but perfectly usable) iMac CTR to work again.
Well, after putting in a new battery, my good old iMac G3 400 SE slot loader was still not booting. I knew everything worked. I turned it off for a day, and then it wouldn't boot up again. All I got was a green flicker as I tried to power on.
Well, low and behold, I used a hair-dryer to warm up the inside of the system, and it booted up fine!
Hopefully this might work for some others with presumable dead iMac G3s. But the question is why??? If I put the system to sleep I get the same "playing dead" iMac and have to wake it up again with the hair dryer. Any thoughts?

Thanks for your input. Yes I did check a number of things, including all connectors fitting ok, but maybe I missed something. I did try swapping out even the logic boards and hard drives, to no avail. My guess it is something with the monitor itself, since the other components work fine, and only when the monitor is heated enough will it start.
I have no problems with the computer otherwise, but I hate to waste electricity - it just can't sleep or it will play dead. Thanks again.
I hope this might help others who might have the same problem thinking it is something wrong with the computer, when it is really the monitor. Go get those hair dryers revved!

  • I'm shooting great white screen but when I key out the white background, I have a very thin white outline around my person that I don't know how to soften without loosing some facial opacity. Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I'm shooting white screen and FINALLY have my lighting, white balance, exposure and focus making a great looking, crispy clip! But when I key out the white background in a short segment, I'm left with a very thin, white outline around my person that I don't know how to soften, without loosing facial opacity. I only tried using the 'Edges' tool. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

The laptop's too far away from the router to be connected by ethernet. It's all wifi.
No separate server app on the laptop, it's all samba
The files are on a windows laptop and a hard drive hooked up to the windows laptop. The windows share server is pants, so I'd need some sort of third party server running. Maybe you weren't suggesting to use Samba to connect to the windows share though?
I'm glad that you've all understood my ramblings and taken and interest, thanks The way I see it, I can't be the only netbook user these days looking for this kind of convenience, and I certainly won't be once chrome and moblin hit the market.

    Hi EveryBody,
5 month ago i had trouble to startup my mac pro. At boot, the mac shutdown itself when it displayed icons on desktop.
At beginning i thought about a gfx card problems. I tryed on other, same problem.
I  read somewhere that it could be a PSU problem and i tryed to put an hair dryer behind PSU during boot. Startup was OK.
I ordered a "Normally New" psu at dv warehouse on the 3rd March. Everything was fine since yesterday, the PSU do the same as the other
Does they send me a faulty one ? could i have an other damaged part ? i try to remove all ram dimms , boot just with one , no way
    Thank you for Advice

use Migration Assistant and everything would work.  But it didn't transfer any of my applications.
Just to be clear - you said "Migration Assistant", but did you really use "Migration Assistant" or rather "Setup Assistant"? When setting up a new Mac, you will be prompted after installing the system to transfer your data - and that would be the Setup Assistant. if you first create your account, and then transfer, you will be using "Migration Assistant". The  "Setup Assistant" is greatly preferable, since it will keep the identity of the user account.
But it didn't transfer any of my applications.
The Setup Assistant or Migration Asistant lets you choose what to transfer. DId you enable to transfer your applications?
Is your old mac a Power PC? If your applications are still PowerPC applications, they cannot run on a Mavericks system.  Try to update as many of your applications as possible to universal binary versions, that can run on Intel macs, before you migrate them to your new Mac.  Aperture 3.1.2 will not still not run on Mavericks, even if it is a univaersal binary, but if you get it transferred and installed on your new Mac, you can update it to 3.5.1.
And before transferring your Aperture library, repair it using the First Aid Tools. See the Aperture Release Notes http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2518

  • Hair Dryer RAM fix multiple times

I recently bought a PowerMac G5 Dual 1.8GHz. The other day it wouldn't boot up, so I did some internetting and found the hair dryer trick. It worked, but it has now decided not to boot up again. The symptoms are the same as last time (light blinks twice, after a while fans go into jet engine mode), so I'm assuming that the hair dryer trick will work again. I was wondering if this problem will just keep occuring, and if there is a (free/cheap) way to fix it. Will the hair drying fix continue to work if the problem keeps occuring? It seems like the kind of thing that will eventually loose it's touch. But in all honestly, if I absolutely have must, I wouldn't mind taking a hair dryer to my PowerMac every few days.

Remove everything you need to reveal the chip itself. Surround the chip with aluminium foil, three or four layers, it is not necassary to cover the whole motherboard, just the surroundings of the chip. One thing that you also want to avoid is the flexing of the motherboard so you must support the backside of the chip somehow, if the board flexes too much then you may kiss the G5 goodbye in most cases.
It would be wise to have infrared thermometer which you can use to measure temperatures, the board might work fine for a while after reflowing it "blindly" without knowing the temps, but most likely you will either heat it too much (and cause damage) or too little to actually melt the solder which is the key for a bit longer lasting fix. It is not recommended to heat too quickly as you might cause all sorts of components popping out like popcorn in a microwave (been there done that).

  • Screen shows image, but is very bright white, and very hard to see.

hello, i have a 4gen nano with a screen that is a bright white most of the time, with a barely visible display. i can see enough to navigate where i want to go, but is is very difficult. on rare occasions the screen returns to normal, randomly, but returns to its white condition soon after. any ideas on what is causing this would be very helpful. thank you

try shutting down and doing SMC reset, the following article tells how to do this:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
also try PRAM reset, the following article tells how to do that:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
if still having issues after doing these 2 resets i would take the mac to apple store or service provider to have it looked at. the following link helps you find one close to you:

  • How do I resize the Firefox home page, so that it has very little white area and mostly background persona?

I like the'' personas'', and I would like to see them as the total background, with just a small white box in the middle for Mozilla Firefox's home page. Right now I just see a small strip of the persona on top and a very narrow strip on the bottom, with a Mozilla Firefox logo in a huge white box - not useful and not nice to look at.
Is there a way to change the dimension of the big white box (like moving the dimension of a text box in Word)?
    Thank you.

My home page background has a design on it. How can I change it back to its original plain background.

  • Very thin white line on iPad Mini

I am seeing a vertical single very thin whitish line on downward side on my iPad Mini Retina Display.I have purchased it 5 months ago and it has never been fallen or damages. Please tell me what to do?

Ahh, sorry, Sometimes I forget all areas are not the same.
I believe Apple does offer a method of mailing the ipad in for evaluation and if still under warranty they take care of the problem or give the option of repair if not warrantied.
Use the Contact Us link at the bottom right of this page to try and get through to support and they should be able to assist you.
    Good Luck.

Once in water you will always have issues. I would replace it. Your homeowners insurance may cover it.
