Very quiet podcasts - awful sound quality music playback

I've tried the 5 R's but it hasn't changed anything. The podcasts are so quiet I can't hear them walking down the street due to traffic noise and the music has taken on a weird electronic sound with the vocals also be difficult to hear.
It is 3-4 yrs old and has been used for 1-2 hrs everyday pretty much... do i just assume that it has had enough?

Then you may be correct. It may have reached the end of its useful life. I know there are some third party iPod repair places that will diagnose the problem for small fee. You might try googling.
Best of luck.

  • Why the extremely poor sound quality in playback with itunes?

I am having problems with the sound quality of itunes music. this applies to both downloads and cd's. This problem is new, I believe, and affects bluetooth speaker, earphones, and macbook pro internal speaker. All have extremely poor playback with itunes. This Problem does not happen with playback of youtube videos.
Thanks for any advice you can give.

I would be worth playing some tracks with Quicktime so see what the quality is like there.
iTunes uses Quicktime to play music.

  • Shuffle 2nd Gen won't connect,  awful sound quality,

    Hi
I just tried to connect my ipod to my pc, the light flashed for three times, then it stopped. it was still charging, since it was getting hot, but it didn't show up in itunes or windows taskbar. I tried with different PCs and USB ports.
i tried to listen to it after that, but the sound quality became awful, like an FM station 200 miles away in a hilly area, and I can only listen to the right earphone, the left one was mute.
    Is it possible fix it?
    Thanks

If you have other Apple devices, connect ONLY the shuffle, with iTunes running.
If it's the only Apple device connected, and the shuffle is really not being recognized by iTunes, the heading DEVICES should not be in the iTunes sidebar at all (since iTunes sees no devices connected).  If you DO see DEVICES in the sidebar (with nothing listed below), the list of devices may be hidden.  When you move your mouse pointer over DEVICES in the sidebar, you should see a Show or Hide "toggle" to the right.  If that says Show, click it to show the list of devices.
If that does not help, since your shuffle is 2nd gen and you use a Mac, you can try running the iPod Reset Utility

  • A new Mac Mini seems to have a very quiet constant squeaking sound, is this normal?

    Hi everyone,
I just purchased a brand new Mac Mini (i5) yesterday, and today in my very quiet room noticed that there is a very quiet squeeking sound coming from the unit (I believe it is near the front of the machine, opposite where the ports are). It is constant and changes pitch very slightly - but when there is a chirping noise from the hard-drive doing work, I think it stops then comes back straight after.
Any idea's if this is a problem and if I should be worried? It's just a bit annoying.
    I have the latest 2013 i5 model.
    Thanks everyone,
    John.

If you purchased the full AppleCare service support extended plan with automatic enrollment with the Mini computer, and you get a new one (or refurbished) ask that the Plan coverage be moved to the replacement Mac. Or refunded if you choose to wait & want to re-think your next product. They may be able to re-credit your method of payment, if a credit card.
I usually read through the product support discussion forums to see what the patterns of issues are, since that may be an indicator of a sort within a narrow specific build series model & sub-year version; and am watchful of graphic card problems in models where the parts may be difficult or costly to replace, if at all, later on.
At least with a Mini, you can choose several display adapters and hope to get a good match with whatever kind of display or digital TV you may wish to try & use as a screen. Some don't do all that well, & others do better.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Awful Sound Quality

    G'day,
Recently the sound has been mediocre with Itunes. I bought a new sound card and changed speakers thinking the sound might be a hardware issue, but I realized that the only time the sound is awful is when playing songs with itunes. Not only is it choppy but the bass sounds terrible and I now have the background sound of an old record player crackling. Overall the sound is unbearable, and I'm hoping I can get some insight into how to fix this. Dell suggested reinstalling/repairing my OS, but I'm hoping there is an easier solution. Thanks!

iTunes and QuickTime: Audio does not play or plays incorrectly
I've tried that link you posted. and I still have the problem. The music from itunes sound awful! Skipping, echoing. muffled to some degree. Prior to installing 7.02 it worked fine. Now I can't listen to my music. My PC is about 2 years old. However, this is no excuse for this problem. I can remove it. I cant go back. I need some real help here!!! I spent a lot of money downloading music. I really think someone at Apple support should step up and help all of us that are having simular problems. the link provided is ok, for most but does not solve all of our problem. this is very frustrating...

    Pulseaudio 4.0
Audacity 2.0.3 (official package from Arch)
But, when I record with Audacity, playback (before exporting), is shoddy.  I noticed my dB levels lower than normal when monitoring my audio/recording in Audacity.  Before I remember I had to even LOWER the default dB level of recording in pavucontrol/sound center.  I've done this many times on Arch, and I have had no new hardware.  I have tried changing the output/input device on the main screen in Audacity several times to no effect.  I never had to before.  Now, on Arch I have always had to set the inital dB recording level via sound prefs, not via Audacity as the "Input Volume" slider on Audacity was always grayed out, but never an issue before.
If you need additional information, please let me know.

first of all, if your pulseaudio setup is working for you there's no reason to break it really..
historically, the reason for using sound servers like pulseaudio over alsa, is that some sound cards don't support hardware mixing with alsa, which means you coudn't play audio from eg. audacious and youtube at the same time. Nowadays alsa has software mixing support (via dmix plugin if I'm not mistaken) so Its not usually an issue any more.
I have very limited experience with pulseaudio, and can't be sure of the differences. Generally I believe alsa can do most of the stuff pulseaudio can, but if you've ever looked at configuring alsa, you might know it could be a real pita especially in more advanced setups. From my limited experience with pulseaudio, I think it could be easier to set up on some cases and often just works out of the box. I could also have some audio over network capabilities that alsa might lack, but that again is just my assumption.
also I'm pretty sure pulseaudio is required for some desktop environments like gnome.
just use whatever method works for you
I remember having that EXACT issue back in ~04-06.  That was the most annoying thing, and the reason why I started to use pulse back then.  Oh I know the pitfalls of alsa, which is why I understand pulse co-existing on Arch's cinnamon package setup.  Cool, well thanks for the advice!

  • Touchsmart 600 popping sound during music playback

    dear all,
i have a very new touchsmart 600-1036D running windows 7 and realtek HD audio card with internal speakers.
I realised that when i am playing music either with WMP or Itunes 64bit, and at the same time when i am surfing or working on a excel sheet/word or something like that, there is a cracking popping sound (like the sound u hear when u plug a 3.5mm head into a jack). The sound only comes on when i am clicking something or launching another program or moving my mouse..
basically if is only the music playing, the music plays well and nice, but when the PC has to do someting else, the popping sound comes.
I have reinstall and update the audio driver, done all diagnostics tests as instructed by HP. but still cannot resolve.
The sound is audible via my headphones as well.
Any idea how to solve this? totally irritating.

May I refer you to the following link in this forum. It sounds like you are having the same problem as a lot of other consumers that have bought this product including myself. The subject " Touchsmart 600xt Audio Performance " is on page 2 .

  • Does your Macbook with Retina make a small (very quiet) fuse-like sound during start-ups?

Dear fellow Macbook (preferable with retina users!) users!
Whenever I press the power button to start up my Macbook with Retina (Mid-2012), I hear this very faint fuse-like (cannot describe it any better, sorry!) coming from the top (I think the top-right) section of my keyboard. I can hear it every time I press the power button, it doesn't matter whether it is turned off or on sleep mode but I can always hear this weird fuse-like noise. I was wondering if anyone else hears this noise?
I don't think it is an software issue. Please some enlighten me?
    Thank you.

I have no idea what you men by " fuse-like  " sound. fuses  do not make a sound. Or do you mean a burning fuse like used in the old days for dynamite?

  • No sound or music playback after update

I updated my AppleTV today, and now it won't play my music stored in the device and there is no sound from the unit. Any fixes?

Same problem here. Whe I power cycle TV or go to another channel and back, HDMI syncs and sound is back for about 5 seconds, then it is gone again. Seems like a broken HDMI handshake...
I do get the startup sound and some menu soundeffects. Even AirTunes from MacBook to ATV and then to TV is working! but none of ATVs local contents or internet trailers give any sound.

  • Ipod youch sound quality

ive been an ipod user for 5 years and i must say im was very satisfied with everything....i use to own an ipod video was using it for 3 years for almost everyday...then just last week i upgraded to an ipod touch 2g...i was very dissapointed witht he sound quality...when i used it for music for the first time, i immediately noticed the inferiority of the sound quality. and i uploaded the same mp3's thatw as in my old ipod 5th gen... ipod touch 2g's too high pitched! even when eq setting is set to treble reducer. i use to listen to my ipod video for as long as 8 hours, but i cant even last an hour with the ipod touch 2g cause of the hihg treble, my ear starts to hurt after an hour! is apple doing anything about this? can they rectify this with future updates? i regreted upgrading to the touch. everything improved in the touch from the 5th gen except with the one thing that matters most. sound quality!

There are very few complaints on the forums about sound quality of the Touch. I've got 9 iPods at home and the Touch's sound almost on a par with the iPod 4G, different, but equal in quality to the Nano 2G, and far superior to the Shuffle 2G's. I've listened to them all through decent headphones and a high end stereo system. I would in no way characterize the Touch as having too much treble. If you want to hear gross treble reproduction, listen to a Toyota Sienna 2007 audio system. It's downright awful, not to mention the muddy bass. Your mention of the "slight uplift in treble..." doesn't really jibe with the OP's description anyways--that or he is grossly exaggerating, which I doubt. I'd be more inclined to think he has a defective unit, rather than him describing a normal-sounding Touch. But of course that's conjecture on the subject and I could be wrong.

  • I play my music via an airport express attached to my hi fi system. Since upgrading to maverick the sound quality is very poor. It sounds very flakey with the volume level going up and down. Tried Ethernet and wireless, but no good

I play music on my hi fi via an airport express attached to my iMac.
Since installing maverick the sound quality is terrible and I get frequent distortion, which never happened before.
I have reset the airport express and reconfigure my wireless settings. I have also used Ethernet on its own but still get the same sound problems.
I would love to turn itunes sound off as you used to be able to do, but this I believe can't be done.
Has anyone else been having the same types of problem, and better still has anyone got the answer?

    Radcolt wrote:
So if I connect my ipad or iPod to an airport express that is being "extended" from the main airport express (the main router which is plug into my audio system), I should still be able to listen to my music, correct?
Yes but be sure to turn on Airplay at whatever Airport connects to the audio.

Also, will the date rate be decreased if they are connected by cat 5e Ethernet cable?  I thought signal drop is minimal.
That's a whole different ball game and a much better solution if it's practical to implement.  The data rate will not decrease.

  • CK-200 poor music playback quality

Hi, I've just installed the car kit CK-200 (ISO cable version) into my car and I'm very disappointed by the music playback quality.
I have Nokia C7 with the latest firmware (14.002) and I have also updated the car kit firmware into 3.0.
There's no problem with the phone call quality - I would say it is comparable to the other car kits (for example to CK-7W I've had before), but if I want to use it for playing music, it still plays it in "phone call-like" quality. I have tried different players, but no success - still the same low quality.
If I turn the FM transmitter on and tune up the car radio to the transmitters' frequency, I get much better quality then via this car kit (although sometimes it's noisy from other broadcasting radios).
In the product description of this CK-200 they highlight very good sound quality thanks to some DSP technology - I hope there's more than this.
Do you have any idea what might be the problem here?

    Hi
The CK-200 is a mono output car kit that is only designed for calls, not music.
If a handset is playing music via the mono Bluetooth channel, this is a fluke, and not part of the design of the handset.
The CK-100, 300, 600 are all stereo car kits with music capability.
The DSP settings on the CK-200 manage the voice vs background noise in the car so the driver can be heard more clearly by the other caller.

  • [solved] Sound very quiet

    Sorry, already solved.
"amixer set Front unmute 100%" fixed the problem. Strangely enough, i muted and unmuted each and every playback device via alsamixer many times.
If you have similar problems try these three commands:
    amixer set Master unmute 80%
    amixer set Front unmute 100%
    amixer set Headphone unmute 100%
    Hello,
my sound is very very quiet. To hear something I have to turn my amplifier up to at least 1/2 volume. At that volume level it would usually be enough to be wake the neighbourhood.
I checked with alsamixer if the sound output was muted but it isn't. What's strange is that the sound output worked just fine today but a restart suddenly the sound was very quiet like this.
    Any ideas what's causing this?
Mainboard is MSI H55M-ED55 with sound chip ALC889.
