Very real heat issue with Retina Mac

I'm running Temperature Gauge by Tunabelly Software, a trusted app. It has shown me several times in the last two days that two or 3 of the CPU cores report back as 90 C. Average fan speed coming in at 5065.
Am being cautious in how I use it - not on soft surface - all vents unobstructed - space between bottom of laptop and hard surface.
The app has actually suggested several times that I shut the machine down or close apps. I'm not running it that hard - actually ordered it with maxed out options so I could use it for much more than this.

Hmm...I've seen a couple of reports about Temp' Gauge. Run smcFanControl as well and compare the results.

  • IMovie transitions issue with retina mac?

Does anyone have an issue with adding transitions in a video in iMovie on the 13" RETINA macbook pro? I have imported a .mov file and I can't put transitions between the video. iMovie starts to do this weird thing where it shortens the video and displaces the video on the timeline. Has anyone else encounter that?

hey guys, so I have a DVD stuck in the CD drive on my mac. It reads it as being in there, but I cannot eject it and it is causing my a lot of issues with my mac. If i try to eject it, Finder acts up and I have issues saving projects or even browsing files. I feel like it interferes with iPhoto as well because it says it is locked and I have no rights to view it. I wanted to see if anyone else had/s this issue and how you fixed it before lugging it into the apple store and being without a computer for a few weeks...

A few other suggestions here as well:

I have an older apple keyboard, either a M2452 or a M7803.  Do these have compatibility issues with 2012 Mac Minis?

I understand that you can connect any keyboard to a Mac Mini, my concern is that the modern Apple keyboards I have seen seem to have a layout much more similar to their PC counterparts. ie, they no longer have the "apple" key, etc.
Will I be missing functionality (using this older Apple keyboard)?

  • Website Issues with Retina Displays

An apple rep stated, that “Yes, some websites are not very clear when viewed with a retina display.” He wouldn’t elaborate further. So, is this a problem? If it is, how major of one is it?
Also, is there a real difference between the retina display and a high-res non-glare display?  I really like non-glare displays. This apple rep also admitted that although there is less glare in the new retina displays than the previous high-res screens, they are still not as ‘non-glare’ as the older MBP ‘non-glare’ screens.  What’s your opinion about this?  No one really likes any glare if they can get away with it. But is the retina display really a big deal?

I have not had any issues with web sites. Be aware that if a web site is coded to be 1024 pixels wide and you have your screen resolution set at 2880 wide then the page will be very small and the text unreadable. So you will have to decide what is the best resolution for you. I have mine set at 1920x1200 pixels and all web sites seem to work well.
There is a noticeable difference between the retina and the glossy screens. About 70% less glare according to Apple. Seems right from my experience.
You should go to an Apple store and check out the display for yourself.

  • After several repairs, still having heating issue with MacBook Pro (mid '09)

EDIT: this post got removed the first time for not being constructive enough. I've now edited the post.
This is going to be a lengthy post, so bear with me.
2 months ago, I suddenly noticed my MacBook Pro (medio 2009, 15", 4GB RAM, GeForce 9400M) heating up a lot harder than usual. I'm familiar with the heating issues these laptops have, but this wasn't normal. Looking at iStat Pro, I saw my fans almost taking off like an airplane at 5700 rpm, while watching only a livestream on my browser. I know Shockwave Flash takes up quite a chunk of your CPU, but I had never encountered this problem beforehand.
The biggest problem wasn't just the heat or the fans, but the fact that my computer also started reacting rather slowly. Sometimes I'd even get beachballed, or the whole browser stopped responding for half a minute...
So I tried to see if gaming was still an option. Of course not. I had been playing League of Legends for several months without any issues. Whilst playing, I'd kick up my fans manually to about 4000 rpm, and they'd stay there throughout the whole game. Now, when I start up the game, it plays smoothly for the first 2 minutes. After the temperatures rise to a critical level, the fans start spinning up to 5700 rpm, and the whole game plays like a powerpoint presentation.
On a sidenote: it sort of 'lags' every 1-2 seconds, and sometimes, after a long period, the game acts somewhat normal again (20 mins). This game uses wine to run, which isn't the most optimal way. So I tried playing Team Fortress 2, too. Probably even worse results! (but again noticeable 1-2 second interval lags)
Before anyone starts screaming: "Don't use your Mac for gaming!" etc., I wish to point out that these two games had been running perfectly for the past few months/years. Something's definitely wrong.
After looking for some solutions myself, I decided to go to an authorized Apple Service in my city. A few days later, they told me my logic board was broken, and I had to pay almost 700 euros ($ 900-1000) to replace it. So I did. I got it back, but it wasn't fixed. Brought it back in. Got it back a week later: "Your new logic board we got from Apple was already broken, but we hadn't noticed. We put a new one in it. It's fixed." Again, same problem.
We're almost 2 months later and 700 euros poorer, still no result. I've brought it in about 6-7 times now, here's a list of what they've tried so far:
    - In total 3 new logic boards
    - New MagSafe (because they discovered it was giving too much power too my laptop)
    - Fresh re-install
    - Replaced RAM
    - Checked fans etc. (they do this by default)
    - A few tests which proved that it was repaired (but I have my doubts with these tests...)
They told me now that it's fixed, and they basically won't look into it anymore. I must contact Apple myself, if I wasn't satisfied. The tests they performed showed no signs of heating issues. (One of the tests was playing 4 1080p movies at the same time. When I watch a 1080p movie on Youtube, my laptop is taking off like a plane) They ran a stress test all night long, showing no temperatures above 98°C. I got it up to 105°C in a few minutes according to iStat Pro.
They advised me to install Mountain Lion, which would make the issues with "high-performance sites" go away. I haven't seen much improvement, though.
This whole experience has been quite frustrating, especially now that I'm gonna need my laptop for University again. Isn't there anything I can do? I've paid almost 700 euros and missed my laptop for 2 months, without any results.
I've got more information regarding the issues if needed, ask away. I'm getting desperate.
I've been browsing around the support communites, and found that a lot of people are having issues since they upgraded to OS X Lion. Could this be the case? Should I try downgrading to Snow Leopard?
I've also found a few topics on refreshing the cooling pasta on the heatsink. Would they have noticed any problems with this after replacing the Logic Board several times? Or should I check it myself? I'm not too keen on opening up my laptop myself...
    Nick.

    Thought of buying Parallels? Fusion?
Might want to see if this gets moved to the MacBook Pro forum.
I'd think Windows 8.1 is smart enough (what I use 90% time since the Dev Preview came out couple yrs ago it seems like) to find the driver.

  • Real VNC issues with Windows 7

I am a system technician using this software on behalf of the Indiana Toll Road and we have already purchased several hundred licenses of Real VNC as well as Windows XP and Windows 7 as we use this software frequently to remote into various lanes and workstations
located at several networked plazas over a 153 mile distance.
I am currently testing this software with a Windows 7 PC and I am experiencing some issues with connectivity that is associated with logging off and/or switching users on this machine as we use an auto-login feature that requires the user to hold the
shift key down during the log off interval to log in under a different user. I have noticed this as being a major issue for a lot of users with the Windows 7 platform from the RealVNC website and I understand that after logging off you are able to regain a
connection. However, when using the auto-login feature, I am not able to hold the shift key down for that session because my connection has been lost and consequently not able to login as an administrator or any other user other than the auto-login user through
this remote service. Currently, we have Windows XP deployed on all of our computers. We are looking to upgrade our network to Windows 7 using the Real VNC software as Windows XP will no longer be maintained under Microsoft service agreement in the coming months.
Is there a way this issue can be addressed from either your software side of this issue... Microsoft and/or Real VNC? Deploying different software for this purpose would be rather cumbersome and not cost effective. So hopefully an update patch from either
side would be even more appreciated. Any thoughts would be very appreciated.
    Thanks

Microsoft and/or Real VNC? Hopefully an update patch from either side would be even more appreciated. Any thoughts would be very appreciated.
    Thanks
Since it is extremely unlikely that Microsoft will issue a patch to fix a Real VNC problem (which would be a case of the tail wagging the dog . . .), you need to get in touch with the Real VNC people about a patch for Windows 7.

  • Quality issues with new Mac Mini 09?

I've been itching to hit the 'buy' button -- but in reading the many postings about the new Mac Mini, I'm seeing lots of issues with the bluetooth ... *wireless signal* ...
Is there anyone who's not experiencing any problems?
Sounds like it may be a hardware issue with connections... the last thing I want.
My other choice is the 2008 Mac Pro which seems trouble free.
    What do you think?
    Thanks.

There is a general issue/trend with the new Mini. There are plenty of reports in these forums and the news has begun to hit the wider press; I guess this is more important to a company with only 2-3% desktop share than posts to these forums. I went to the Genius Bar on Saturday and they have now lodged an official bug report with Apple. It looks like the Mini cannot pair with more than one HCI device. So if you pair with the mouse first the keyboard won't work and vice-versa. They don't think the Mini hardware is broken but that we will just have to wait for Apple to fix the firmware.
Where I do agree is that some issues are OS-X 10.5 related and can therefore affect all Macs. The WiFi has issues where it randomly drops, it doesn't seem able to re-connect at all to channels above 13 and only manually to channels below 12. The system resume function is unreliable. All these started when we moved from 10.4 to 10.5 and so far they have not been addressed. One issue is that there does not appear to be a way for users to log bug reports, except when software crashes. However, the bluetooth issues on the Mac do appear real and are either firmware or hardware related.

  • IPhone 4S - Syncing issues with a Mac

I've tried almost everything! I have the latest versions of Itunes, iOS7, and running OS x 10.9. I cant sync music between my iPhone 4S and my Mac or my wife's iPhone4 and the Mac. Very frustrating, I don't manually manage music I sync my playlists and videos. I've tried to restore and restart both phones but nothing! When I purchase music now, I have to wait until it downloads and then create or modify a playlist on the phone itself, I can't even get purchases to transfer, if i make them on the Mac. It began after I performed the latest iOS7 update. Help please!!!

Thanks @Awol1404 I do have a lot of songs with just a circle of dots on the device through Itunes, some of these songs come up on the device itself as greyed out with a (stop download icon (circle with square in the middle)) i've tried to remove all the songs my unchecking the sync music box and checking the manually mangage box. I press sync or apply and itunes does its thing. On Itunes the device then comes up as having 2 playlists (one voice memos and 1 random playlist from what i had) and thats it. I can reboot the computer and when i plug it back in it still says that that is what is on the phone. on the phone itself, there has been no changes except maybe the odd song greyed out. Very confusing, frustrating and well... frustrating!!!!
I have no issues with iCloud syncing, contacts and messages, emails, calendars are all working how they should.

  • Two weird issues with my Mac Pro (locking up and failing to reboot)

    Hello,
I am having two problems with my Mac Pro. The first one is every time I put it to sleep and then wake it up it locks up. This problem came after I installed Leopard (in Tiger sometimes it would take longer to come out of sleep but it always came out). My other problem showed up after I installed Leopard as well, every time I go up to the apple menu and click on restart my computer dose everything normal but when it goes to the “off” state it sits there and reboots over and over and over again. I don’t ever hear the bong or see the grey start screen; I can just hear my CD-ROM drives being accessed (clicking sound I usually hear when I turn the computer on) over and over again. I have run the Apple Hardware Test and it comes back clean, I have also reset the SMC and zapped the PRAM.
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with these problems and knew how to fix them.

This is exactly what my Mac Pro did before it died last Friday (9 November 2007).
Apple keeps saying Mac Pro death isn't common, but I've talked to a dozen people whose Pro died just like mine did.
Apple gave me a brand new Pro Sunday, which was nice of them, and I probably was just unlucky with the first one.
Still, it is obvious that Apple is having QC issues lately.
USB video devices will crash a Mac Pro consistently, for example. It's really disappointing because the machine is very nice otherwise.

  • Having issues with my mac, wanted to do the "Disk repair" but it wont letme

From BDaqua (couldn't have said it better):
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer (Edit: Do not use this disc if it is not the same general version as what you have currently on your computer, e.g. use a Tiger disc for a Tiger drive, not a Panther disc), then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
Then Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes."

  • Sleeping issue with new mac mini

i have a new c2d 2.0 mac mini all software is up to date. the first night i was able to put it to sleep without any problems but since then when i try to put it to sleep by eithre the apple menu or hitting (eject, apple, option) the dvd drive clicks and the mini wakes up all in 5 seconds.
another sleep problem is with both mac mini's (the c2d and g4 1.42) neither will go to sleep with an external harddrive connected (mounted or not and still powered on) I have looked for an answer to this problem for a while and have found nothing. i thought i saw a thread on this very subject but have yet to find it again
    thanks for help
    Nick

    Hello,
It's nothing to really start worrying about, it's most likely down to a communication error between your hardware and your software. The simple solution is:
    1) Unplug all cables from the computer, including the power cord.
    2) Wait 15-20 seconds.
    3) Press and hold the power button on the back of the computer
    4) Whilst holding the power button, plug the power cord back into the machine
    5) Release the power button
    6) Press the power button once more to start up your Mac mini.
Everything should be sorted! (if not, call back here)
    Good luck
