Very serious system wide problem

I am having a very serious problem. It started today, after I installed the kernel extension for iStat, so I think that might be it. I have uninstalled that, but the problem persists. After about thirty minutes of uptime, everything will stop working properly. Disk images won't mount. When I open up Terminal it says "Command complete". Applications don't open at all. My account loses admin privileges, even though it says I have them in System Preferences. System Preferences doesn't work properly. My weather widget says "NaN" instead of a temperature. If I restart it works, but I can't do that every 30 minutes. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this? It is rather urgent.

If you are on a Windows network and sharing your Mac with the Windows machines you run the risk of the samba demon running wild. If you aren't on a network go to System Prefs and turn off Windows and Printer sharing. If you are on a network and need to leave that function on, go to the Discussions home page and do a Search on "smbd"--you'll find lots of things to read.

ical, ichat and address book do not open.
mail (2.1.3) opens but individual messages do not load.
i rebooted 3 times but the problems do not go away.
    any suggestion welcome.
    thank you.
    f.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

  • System Wide Permissions Problem

I have a MacBook Pro, OS 10.5.8, which I've been using since 2009, and this is the first time I've encountered the problem described below.
I'm suddenly having what seems to be a system wide permissions problem. Tonight I found I couldn't add a new folder (the option was grayed out), and I noticed a pencil icon with a line through it at the bottom of the window. When I chose Get Info for that window, my name was missing from Sharing & Permissions. There was also a new name, "wheel", which I've never seen before. (3 names in all: system, wheel, eveyone.) This affects a lot of folders stemming off the HD (Applications, Library, etc.), but my user folder folder is unaffected.
I've rebuilt the permissions several times in Disk Utility, and also repaired the disk after getting an error message when verifying. But the permissions problem is still there.
So I'm wondering what in the heck could have caused this, and how can I fix it?
I found I could add my name back to the permissions list in one of the affected folders, using Get Info, and this solved the issue for that folder, but there are a LOT of folders with the same issue. Perhaps if I did this with the HD folder, and selected the "Apply to enclosed items" option at the bottom?
FWIW, we just bought & set up a new iMac, OS 10.8.2, last week. I looked at a number of folders on it using Get Info, and it seems to be configured pretty much the same way with regard to permissions, which is a little spooky. Don't know if it makes any difference, but I used the same user name, login password, apple ID & password when I set up the new computer as I have on my Macbook. Could that have caused this somehow?
Thanks for any help or thoughts.

Thank you, BDAqua for the link.
I use my MacBook Pro mainly for creating music (DAW program & plug-ins). I've occasionally had to change permissions on individual plug-ins, but never to a group of folders on this scale.
I'm wondering if there's a way to get my old permissions back, or if I should leave it as is at this point, and add my user name to the permissions on individual folders as the need arises? Don't want to screw everything up, as this is getting a little over my head.
    Any recommendations?

  • Serious System Problems. Pictures and Documents folders are opening iPhoto when clicked. iPhoto Library gone.

I have been speaking to Old Toad for the majority of today trying to fix my iPhoto Library as its become corrupt and I cannot get my photos/videos back into iPhoto. After many many suggestions I seem to have created some serious system problems.

If anybody can be of assisatance that would be a great help.
I am a mac dummie, recently transfered so foolproof guidance will be helpfull!
(Unfortunatly.. and now I know the importance, I haven't used time-machine and my mac isn't backed up. If i restore to factory settings I will loose the 600+ photos and videos I had in my iPhoto Library.... which dissapeared, which is the whole reason why I created the first thread)
    Thank you!!

    Linc:
It appeared to me that somehow the OP's Picture folder was converted into an iPhoto Library as his screenshot of the PIctures folder looked like the inside of a library.
This statement by the OP make me think it might be more than just an iPhoto issue (the bold text):
I am unable to drag the Picture folder to the desktop, It wont move, and iPhoto (which is still empty) just opens.
Some how the same is happening with Documents,

    Do you have extended AppleCare?

  • System Wide Text Substitutions

I hope this is the right discussion group for this question. I just discovered that 10.6 has the ability for applications like Text Edit to use automatic text substitutions so that if you type "teh" by accident it will automatically change to "the". This is a great feature since any single "i" will become "I" and so on. You can progran whatever you like. In word processors this would include auto capitalization etc.
Can anyone tell me why this feature does not work for Mail? I am certain more users use Mail than the y do Text Edit (a great programme by the way).
Does Apple intend to extend this feature to Mail in the future. It's always been a problem for me since I use Outlook at work and it includes all those features as part of the Office thing (including auto capitilization). It would really help the workflow of Mail if one could automate some of this stuff.
    Thanks

see this link how to enable it system wide. I use it in Mail. very handy.

  • System-wide blue to purple color switch bug

I've been having a very confusing and inconsistent color issue which has persisted for years on both a PowerBook G4 and my new MacBook Pro using Panther and Tiger respectively. The MacBook is only two weeks old and still has a very clean system.
Seemingly at random blue colors will switch to purple in random places in most apps. Restarting the computer used to solve the issue, but it no longer does - I am permanently stuck with a purple color scheme (screenshots further down).
    - The default unvisited link color in all apps has switched from blue to purple.
    - The finder icon has switched from blue to purple in both the dock and the command-tab switcher (but the icon is the correct color when viewed inside the CoreServices folder). All other blue dock icons are unaffected.
    - Some toolbar or sidebar images in most apps which were blue are now purple, but other blue icons have stayed blue.
I have screenshots just to show that I'm not imagining this. Mail and the Finder use the same drag-and-drop sidebar highlight color. However, Mail has now taken on a purple theme:
And here is the Finder icon as seen in the dock, and then as an alias in the Finder:
Here is what I have tried thus far (nothing has worked):
    - Logging out and in
    - Logging out and in while holding shift (safe login)
    - Restarting the computer
    - Restarting the computer while holding shift (safe boot)
    - Repairing permissions and restarting
    - Zapping the PRAM (command-option-p-r)
    - Creating a new user account and logging into it
    - Running daily, weekly, and monthly cron scripts using Onyx
    - Deleting all caches for applications, fonts, system, and kernel
    - Pulled everything out of the main Library (Macintosh HD/Library/), cleared caches, and restarted
From this I've concluded that it's probably a bug or corrupted file in the core system since safe boot, clean user accounts, and a bare library didn't fix the problem. The obvious solution would be to re-install the OS, but I'm afraid that the problem would just happen again since it has been occurring with multiple versions of the OS on two different computers.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I should add that this has been a slowly developing problem, one which is only getting worse. The first effect was a system-wide change in the default unvisited link color. Restarting the computer solved the problem whenever it would occur (about twice a day). The next to be affected was image colors, and once this happened for the first time, restarting the computer no longer fixed the problem.

  • System wide lag

    Hello guys, new member here.
I'd like you guys to help me out with something here.
    I have a 13 inch, mid 2013 macbook pro with a 2.9 ghz i7, 8 gb RAM and a 750 gig HDD.
My problem is every now and then there is a system wide lag which freezes pretty much everything and audio playing from itunes also pauses during that time, it's quite frustrating as i've been searching for a fix since yesterday but havent found anything that can completely fix it. Usually there is only itunes, safari, mail and maybe one or two more things open at a time. I have checked my HDD for issues but there seem to be none. I suspect that this is related to the CPU since while I was using safari, a process called WindowServer would start using around 35% CPU, with nothing that intensive open on the browser
Note: This was ocurring much more frequently this morning but it has gotten a bit better now after I downloaded chrome and started using it instead of safari, I would, however, like to use safari instead.
Thanks in advance, I would be very thankful if someone could help me out with this, I have my exams coming up and I rely on my laptop for a lot of stuff.

I've got this problem on Macbook pro (mid 2010, 2,4ghz i5, 8gb ram, nvidia gt330m)
I don't think it ever happened before upgrading to mavericks. But now it's horrible!
It seems to only happen to me when I'm running unity3D, but does happen every minute or even more often. And the system freezes for anywhere between a second and 15 seconds...

  • System wide Lock timeout

    Hi,
I'd like to set a system wide lock timeout to 10 secs, i est I want that if a transaction waits for a row more than 10 seconds, the Oracle forces a ROLLBACK!
Looking in the documentation I found the trigger:
    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER resumable_default_timeout AFTER SUSPEND ON DATABASE BEGIN DBMS_RESUMABLE.SET_TIMEOUT(10); END;
... but it seems not to work.
Is there any system wide parameter, or another trigger, or I missed something with the above trigger (I shutdown any session to test)!
    thank you
    G.

    Steve,
your answer is complete, the problem I am facing is that:
1 - I should instruct my programmers of the usabily of this tecnique the SELECT ... FOR UPDATE WAIT n, so the timeout is faced from application perspective, and it isn't so bad, in fact every single query could be customized regarding the WAIT time!
The drawback is that if the programmer doesn't use this technique, the application waits for the eternity.
2 - A system wide lock timeout, in any case could force, in any case, a default behaviour, ...
3 - If you are doing a porting from a different RDBMS see DB2, that implements a db lock timeout, you should recode all the SQL, and the porting needs more review and testing of the application!
    Thank you
    very much

  • [SLVD] `sudo mount` from Apache's (mod_php) context isn't system-wide.

Title field appears to be limited in acceptable symbols, so, the proper title would be `sudo mount` from Apache's (mod_php) context is successful, but not applied to whole system.
Apache is run as http:http, http is added to sudoers as http ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL.
Now, drop the "insecurity" bucket, I know how insecure it is. This is for a different kind of environment - a NAS (as in Network Attached Storage), that has a web-based OS on top of it, written in PHP for the sake of simplicty and team scalability. The Web OS and NAS together make up for Mobotix IP camera storage and configuration.
I've already asked 2 questions on Stack Exchange network - http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1959 … h-nopasswd and here http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions … le-by-root, where I've explained the situation in great detail (at least I think I have).
Now, assuming that more experienced users do not camp Stack Exchange, I'm giving a hot here. Arch is the distro under the NAS, so...
Basically, the problems description can be narrowed down to:
    Performing a `sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/firstdrive` in a web-request by PHP's exec mounts the filesystem successfully.
Though, it appears that the mount is made private for the running user.
Private as in... Logging in @ TTY0 with root and running lsblk or cat /proc/mounts does not show the mountpoint.
That breaks down some of the subsequent functionality required for some of the NAS'es processes.
What could be the reason for `mount`/`umount` not executed system-wide?
How come commands like `parted`, `dd`, `mdadm`, `mkdir` execute as expected?
How do I overcome the issue?
P.S. Excuse the quirky environment, but, it actually works flawlessly (we've shipped about 30 units now, with no complaints, am refactoring/majorly upgrading now, hence the problem) and is very pleasant for quick extensions/modifications.
    Thanks in advance!

    Okay, now I'm really amazed.
I thought that there are problems with EUID's and what not, so, I compiled Apache with `-DBIG_SECURITY_HOLE` to make it run as root.
Same problem remains, it mounts, but somewhere "behind the scenes".
Why doesn't mount work system-wide in Apache's context?
    Update:
I've find out what's happening in "technical" terms. Apache appears to be running in it's own mount namespace.
Querying cat /proc/<apaches-main-or-child-pid>/mounts display the mount.
Now, how'd I make the namespaced mount to reflect whole system?

  • Setting a System wide lock timeout (clx)

I'd like to know how it is possible to set a system wide lock timeout!
For example, I need that a transaction waiting for a row more than 10 seconds, was automatically rolled back!

    CREATE OR REPLACE TRIGGER resumable_default_timeout AFTER SUSPEND ON DATABASE BEGIN DBMS_RESUMABLE.SET_TIMEOUT(10); END;

  • Preferences API plus Linux. Saving entries system wide.

    Hi:
I hope you know a little more about this than I do:
I want to (one time) write a key-value pair into the Registry (Windows) / the according xml file (Linux).
Since this entry should be available for all users, I used the following line to save it system wide:
    Preferences prefs = Preferences.systemRoot().node(this.getClass().getName());
In the Windows Registry it can be found here:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/ SOFTWARE/JavaSoft/Prefs
Under Linux the prefs.xml file which contains the key value pair can be found here:
    /etc/.java/.systemPrefs/_!':!.../prefs.xml
But, in order to create this file under Linux I had to temporarily change the access rights of the directory "/etc/.java/.systemPrefs" plus the two files inside this directory (".system.lock" and ".systemRootModFile") to 777.
Afterwards I executed my Java program which set the entry I am talking about.
At the end I set back the access rights of the ".systemPrefs" directory plus the two files mentioned above.
The file prefs.xml has the following access rights:
    -rw-r--r--
So, everyone has at least read access (which is great).
    My question:
    - Since other people should use this program in the future too: is there an easier / better way to set system wide preferences?
For an answer thank you very much in advance.
    Joey

    Hi jschell:
    Thank you for your answer.
The way you describe it is exactly how it is done till now.
My task is to find out the way to do it using the Properties API plus solving potential problems (like the one described above).
I just took a look at my question again. I wrote "Since other people should use this program in the future too: is there an easier / better way to set system wide preferences?".
What I wanted to ask is: "Since other people should install this program in the future too, is there an easier / better way to set system wide preferences (by using the Properties API)?"

  • Serious connection pool problem on Tomcat

    Hi,
We are deploying our JSF creator-made app onto Tomcat 1.5. We set up our JNDI datasource on Tomcat (using the i-net driver ).
Initially the pages load ok but after a short period of time we are getting these errors:
Initialization Failure: javax.faces.FacesException: org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.SQLNestedException: Cannot get a connection, pool exhaustedWe believe that somehow the Creator-generated code is NOT freeing up connections in the connection pool.
We think that when the afterRenderResponse() methods in the beans call rowset.close() this is NOT returning the connections to the pool. Can someone, hopefully a Sun Engineer confirm that the rowset.close() code in afterRenderResponse() returns the connection behind the rowset to the connection pool.
Could this be a driver issue? We are using the i-net driver not the DataDirect one, but this should implement the full API.
This is a very serious problem for us.
    regards,
    john

do you have any example code you could post? I have a Spring/JSC tutorial on this forum. Just search for Spring and you should find it. It you need something more, I'll try to give you some help...time provided.
    am i
right in thinking that you use the forms designer to
lay out your pages and just put your own stuff in the
bean constructor?Close...but not everything goes in the constructor.
    >
One thing that may have caused a problem is we have
just noticed that in one of our most commonly hit
    pages this line:
    dataTable1Model.setDataCacheKey("com.sun.datacache.my_
    page.my_rowset");
featured the WRONG "my_page" jsp page but the correct
rowset name "my_rowset". The page DID load correctly
and run correctly, though. Could this cause problems
with connection pooling? Anyone?I wouldn't think so, but it depends on how Creator builds the code.

  • ITunes 10.7 crashes all apps on Mountain Lion including Force Quit. First system wide prob with an apple computer since OSX introduced. Any ideas?

updated to iTunes 10.7  from app Store last night. After the update, iTunes opens then stalls with the "spinning pizza wheel". Force Quit is unresponsive and will not shut it down. If I then open other applications say Safari for example, the problem migrates over to Safari and it similarly stalls and becomes unresponsive. The only way to solve the problem is to manually shut the computer down. This is the most significant problem I have experienced on an apple computer since OSX was introduced because it impacts on Force Quit which means that you have to shut the whole deal down. There are obvious problems for use of Apple TV and apple store etc. ! I am running mountain lion 10.8.1 on a 27" iMac with 2T Time Capsule connected wirelessly. How do I downgrade iTunes back to 10.6? I had no problems with Mountain Lion or iTunes up to that point.

this is the exact same problem i've been dealing with for the past 2 days. after i installed itunes 10.7 for my iphone5 it would crash my mbp's lion system wide. i tried every solution i could find on google and i've actually had to reinstall lion & time machine my backups because of it. right now i'm too scared to redownload itunes 10.7. i actually feel like waiting for the "new itunes" that comes out in october.
