Very slow address book

Ever since I moved to Snow Leopard, my address book is terribly slow. The ball keeps rolling forever and characters in the search box appear one at a time (very slowly)
I trashed AddressBook-v22.abcddb a number of times but that doesn't seem to help. Maybe compressing or defrag AB would but I can't seem to see how.
Any ideas ?

I'm having the same issue. Any luck fixing it?
Doing anything, including opening the application, searching, moving a card to another group, etc. cause the pinwheel of death to take at least 30 seconds.

Very slow mac book pro

My MBP has become very slow. Seems like I get the spinning color wheel all the time, which is annoying. I happens in Safari and Mail mostly. Any suggestions? Trying to avoid taking it in for an expensive service.

Restarted MBP in Safe Mode last night and will use it a bit later on and report back. I've also been experiencing big slowdowns in my Imac and ran the process you described above. No errors in Disk Repair and here's the report from your app:

Lync Client Slow Address Book Sync

Lync Server 2010 set up on a single server install. Exchange 2003 on a separate server.
When I install the Lync cilent on any PC, the users are unable to search for contacts to add for at least a few hours or more. They get the message "The address book is preparing to synchronize. Search results may not be current."
Why does it take so long for the address book to synch? In Communicator 2007 R2 server, syncing was immediate.

Try to run an update-csadresbook on your front end.
Check the local rights on your appdata folder in the profile folder on your PC.
Lync downloads the adressbook at random between 0 and 60 minutes. You can force it by the registry for troubleshooting only.

Very Very Slow Mac Book Pro

Mac Book Pro 13" Late 2010
Mac OsX 10.6.3
Problem:
Opening FInder Windows and genral activity on the Mac has become incredibly slow. Opening a Finder Window by clicking on the FInder Dock Icon can take anywhere up to 6 seconds, and a ll I see is the spinning beach ball while I wait.
The Mac was running Osx 10.6.8 but I reinstalled the Os from the original install CD's and which meant I downgraded. The Mac worked fine for about two hours and now slow down has started again. I have been trying to update the Os to 10.6.8 but now the Finder keeps freezing, nothing but the beach ball of death.
The computer will operate fine of a USB HD running Lion.
I have Verified/Repaired Permissions
Verified/Repaired the HD - the HD showed no errors according to Disk Utility
Cheked the SMART statued of the HD, and it Verifies okay.
Reinstalled the HD
Created a new User Account
Scanned the computer with ClamXav and found no malitious software
Note this mac has had the Motherboard replaced under warranty twice, the last replacement was in May, the computer has been used for noting except web browsing and email since then.
Coincidentally my friend's Mac of the same vintage and Os is having a very similar problem.
Any pointers?

After an hour the back ball came back again. Opening Safari or even a Finder window would cause the Mac to freeze.
I have reased the HD and reinstalled Os 10.6.3 from the original DVD, then updated to 10.6.8. The computer lasted about 4 hours before the same problems came back again.
I tried to install Os 10.7.0 from an Apple Installer USB. The Installer said there was a disk error and couldn't complete the Installation.
I ran disk utilities however it found no problems.
I erased the HD again I reinstalled 10.6.3. and then tried to Install 10.7.0 but received an error massage, "The installation could not be completed, please try again".
I tried to update the Os to 10.6.8 but the update process stalls at about 50% .
The computer now freezes in beachball mode after about one minute of booting.
Next I will try to swap HD's and see if that works.

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately, leaving the Terminal window empty. If that doesn't happen, press the return key.

Address book is too slow to be usable

I've just bought the fastest Mac Pro that there is, and put in 16 GB of memory. But the Mac's Address Book is NON-FUNCTIONAL!!!! I have 19,000 addresses I imported from Act. If I try to edit anything, it takes SEVERAL MINUTES for the entry to finalize itself. This is a disaster!
My previous computer was a PC, where I ran Act. It was a slower machine, but Act had no problems in responsiveness; there was no waiting involved when you edit addresses.
Apple: Please fix this disaster!!!!!!!!
I am using the latest version of Leopard.

I've also observed that my Address Book on an Intel MacBook Pro is extraordinarily slow after a manual update to 10.5.1 following an 'archive and install' of Leopard (this was the second install after doing a simple upgrade and finding the whole darn thing just too buggy to live with. The second time restored general speediness). Ironically, I do not have this problem on my iMac G5, having gone through the same archive & install and manual update to 10.5.1. Furthermore, the Table feature in Pages (iWork'08) is incredibly slow (but not on the iMac). So, I second or third those observations of a slow Address Book. (I've also been trolling the discussion threads on problems synching iPhone and Address Book and Calendar, which again is problematic on the MBP but not the iMac). I have no solution to offer, but if someone can tell me how to just reinstall Address Book and iCal from the Leopard installation disk, I'd be grateful because I think therein might be a solution.

Blackberry Storm - Address Book Corrupt?

Contacts are either starting to disappear or can't be editted. Why is that? If I can find the contact, but want to make an update... I get the following error message.

Contact updated externally. Changes will be lost and viewer closed.
If the contact is missing, sometimes I can find that missing contact if I go through the call history and view the contact info from that old entry, but I noticed that all new calls either called or received don't list the name in call history no more. What's going on? I don't have a very large address book, it has less than 300 entries... Is there a utility to fix the corrupted address book database? That's what I'm assuming is the problem... Why do contacts disappear in the address book, but I can later find them if I go through a round about method of access via call history nor can I edit them?

Importing an old address book from mac LC111 into my mac os x 10.5.8

I have an old hard drive on my desktop-LC111-claris works-appleworks. In this is my very precious address book. I have not been able to open this book since buying the new mac a few months ago.
"You cannot open this application as the Classic environment is no longer supported."
How can I find a way to import this address book into my new computer? I have a copy of the book on my desktop.

It all depends on what version of ClarisWorks/AppleWorks the address book is save as & if it's a database or a spreadsheet or text. Only AppleWorks can open ClarisWorks/AppleWorks databases & the newest version of AppleWorks, 6.2.9, can't open many ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. The easiest thing would be to send the file to someone with AppleWorks who can open the file & re-save it at text or a spreadsheet. If you don't know anyone, you can send it to me & I'll send it back as soon as I can.
You could buy a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.4 which will run in OS X & will open any ClarisWorks or AppleWorks file or you can try MacLink Plus from DataViz.

"Related Names" Does Not Sync From Apple Address Book to iOS 4 Address Book

I keep a very detailed address book and have just realized that the "related names" field does not sync from my Mac to my iPhone. Does anyone know if this is a limitation of the iTunes syncing and the software, or am I doing something wrong? If this is a limitation, does anyone know a work around? This is important information for me to have on the go.

Oops -- I just had to turn iCloud on in the System settings on the iPhone, then the Contacts synched.

Address Book SmartGroup Bugs and Gremlins

I have created a smartgroup (1 of 8) to identify all cards not a member of any group (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1284763). Very strangely, address book hangs every time I click on either and then won't start properly unless I delete "com.apple.AddressBook.plist" in my user library/preferences folder.
So I have tried:
1) creating new smart groups: this has just created two more identical smartgroups which hang address book;
2) reinstalling address book from the leopard disks - no change;
3) calling applecare where I sadly my response was received by an (level 2) individual whose personal motto was"nothing is possible" - this only happens once in a while - normally there not too bad. He refused to help beyond a) deleting all my data and reinstalling address book, which of course will lose my smartgroup data (of the other working ones), b) a complete time capsule reinstall c) he even refused to transfer me to another "product specialist" (presumably in case they were more helpful) and d) refused to escalate it anywhere.
so I appeal to you good people, if you help me solve this problem, you can wear a badge which says, I'm more helpful than Applecare.
a mobile me sync does not include smartgroups - so that's a no.
is there a way of deleting the now 3 rogue smartgroups without starting address book? I think this will solve the problem efficiently!

in view group : I had 2 "iCloud" group, and no "on my mac" group !!
and prefs, i found 2 icloud accounts : mac.com and me.com
I remember now that I had problems to create the mac.com
So, I've cancelled the me.com from the address book prefs,
Now I have only iCloud (Mac.com) account, but no "on my mac". So i'm not sync ??
In Addresse book prefs, I have iCloud, and OnMyMac, but for that last one, I have only the option of sync with Yahoo or Google
Also other bugs now : When I create a new group, impossible to delete it, and, if I rename it and double-click on it, I see groupe wihout name...

Large Contact Address Book Question

Hello...
Does Google or the Pre have a max size on contacts? I ask as I have a very large address book at over 8,000 contacts that I had on my Treo 700P. I used the Data Transfer Assistant and only seemed to get as far as the letter "U".
I am taking a guess that the Pre has a max of 8,000 contacts. Can anyone verify that they have chosen the Google option for sync and they have more than 8,000 contacts?

Hi. Following up on this answer, & to confirm: This is the only way to get rid of duplicate info that is stored in the Palm Profile, correct? When I first ran DTA, from my Palm desktop, I hadn't realized just how many duplicates there were. I'm now cleaning up those contacts, in the old Palm Desktop (actually, in ECCO, an old PIM that works w/ Palm Hotsync, & now MotionApps Classic). However, I understand that if I run DTA again, I'll simply be adding another set of contacts, albeit w/ no dupes, into what's already stored in the Profile, w/ all of its many dupes. So, the only answer is to wipe the Pre, after deleting the Backup?
Also, a tip gleaned elsewhere: for Windows XP users, MS Synctoy, http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=c26efa36-98e0-4ee9-a7c5-98d0592d8c52&Displa... allows one to create & maintain an exact copy of two directories & associated subdirectories, across drives. So I have created an exact duplicate (Have I? Is anything missing) of the palm Pre on the root directory of my C-Drive (had to put on the root directroy, b/c some of the Palm Pre subdirectory names are so long), which I run manually, but which should allow me to restore all missing data files (i.e. photos, docs, & videos, not settings & such, which are buried in files which I can't figure out) after the wipe.
Please advise me if there's a problme w/ the above. Thank you!

Address Book is very very slow and mixes up data

Address Book has been mixing up addresses. Many contacts have phone numbers and email addresses from other contacts. It's also become very, very slow. For example, making any change brings on about 30 to 60 seconds of the spinning ball.
How do I fix it? What's going on with this thing?

I am getting random contacts with the phone number repeating over 60 times. Deleting them is painfully slow.

Like unimaginably slow. After clicking on the applications, I was able to perform a google search, find this forum, and and start this thread before either application became active.
I am running 10.6.1 and have had this problem since 10.6. not before.
I upgraded my system, I did not install Snow Leopard fresh, and I really hope I dont have to to solve this problem. So much for the speed portion of the Snow Leopard improvements!
Has anybody else seen this issue? I certainly hope so because it's terrible to have to track down a problem like this alone.

Thank you for this link. Here is the process I used to fix it.
1 - I had one smart group in address book, with a NOT variable. (if contact is NOT in any group)
2 - click on the smart folder, wait a long time for it to be selected.
3 - delete the smart folder
4 - close address book
5 - reboot.
6 - both Mail and Address book now open very quickly. Problem solved

re-creating the same smart group brings back the same problem!!! So we have broken address book functionality in 10.6? just awesome....

Address book very slow to show addresses

When I start up address book, although the application opens up quickly the addresses take several minutes to appear in the window. I can't be completely sure but I think it may be related to upgrading to OS X 10.6 - I don't remember this being a problem some months back.
Is there anything I can do to fix this problem.

In addition to this problem, from time to time the Address Book will slip into "Beach-ball" mode and (not necessarily coincident because this is consistently a problem) access to the Contacts in Mobile me is also either very slow or simply unavailable!

My address book is very slow

my mail.app is terribly slow in completing addresses. Now I found solutions (like throwing away the local address book here: https://discussions.apple.com/message/19058957#19058957) in old threads, but the location for all the stuff has apparently changed.
I do not *have* /Users/<your_name>/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. Anyone know where it went?

To get to the "hidden" Library do this...
Go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
