Very slow browser! Why?? (I've had to switch to Safari)

I have been struggling with a slow Firefox (3.6.12 I think) for months it seems. Yesterday I decided to completely remove Firefox from the computer and reinstall it from scratch. I did so with no change in speed. This morning version 3.6.13 installed and it is acting the same way. I suspect Norton 360 from hijacking the processor for scans, but it is not supposed to be doing that. What else could make my browser so slow? (Right now I am running Safari with no issues, Opera also operates with no issues, as well as IE.)

I have the same problem except that I am on Windows SP3. And 3.6.13 is even slower than 3.6.12. Starting or stopping it takes minutes. I removed all my cookies but did not help. IE8 is running fine. I also run Norton 360.
Later....
I tried starting in Safe Mode - did not help. For example, bringing up NYTIMES.com in a tab is taking over 5 minutes and is still going.

  • Fast internet connection but very slow browsing

    Hi,
For some time now we have been struggling with very slow browsing speeds. Sometimes the web page will not even load. ADSL speed checks show a good up and down speed and shown below and everything appears to run well if we simply download a file.
Do any of the numbers below indicate any problems?
We have various pc's both hard wired and connected wirelessly and the problems are the same on all. The laptop works fine on my office connection.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Very slow browser performance

Hi and thanks in advance for your time.
My internet browsing is painfully slow. I tested the speed on speedtest.net and on speakeasy.net, the result were:
    MP3 file download (5MB): 2 sec
    Video clip (35MB): 14 sec
    Movie (800MB): 5min
    Download: 20 MB/s - 26053kbps
    Upload: 6.52MB/s - 6594kbps
    Ping: 71Ms
Another useful info is that since the last update, Safari has crashed few times, particularly with s website for music that has lots of QT videos. However, the speed was very slow even before the last update
I use Comcast with a DSL modem that was reset by comcast prior to performing the test (did not see improvement after that). Supposly, I got more speed that what I am paying for, but again, it is QUITE slow.
My computer is a 2Ghz PowerPC G5 running 2Gb RAM, bus speed: 667Mhz, 128MB video RAM, HD is 232GB (123 are used mainly on music, video, photos and keynote docs)
    What can I do?
    Thanks!

Let's try and deal with the slowness first:
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If your Safari crashes, please copy and paste the crash report here.

  • Firefox 5 if installed, gmail becomes very slow. Why?

I was installed fire fox 5. But my G mail was running very slow. Also browsing speed was slower down. so again i installed the previous version of fire fox. Why fire fox 5 is not running with Google search engine?

Try to start Firefox in [[Safe mode|Safe mode]]. This mode disables all extensions, user customizations, hardware acceleration, etc. temporarily for diagnostic and troubleshooting. If Firefox works fine in Safe Mode, then this is likely an add-on issue. Restart Firefox in normal mode, then type "About:addons" (without the quotes) in the address bar. Disable your extensions one by one, restarting Firefox between each one, until you find the trouble maker.

  • New iMac very slow? why?

    Hi,
I have recently bought brand new iMac 21,5" 2,7 Ghz i5 with 8GB ram and 1 TB memory. I have transfered all data from Time Machine backup. And my computer is very very slow with apps, expecialy when it wakes up from sleep. I turn on safari, illustrator and photoshop and it takes 10 minutes to became normal. If I open mail it is very very slow. Also, twitter app. I don't know where the problem is. It is brand new computer. It has all the power. I have checked "verify disk" and everything is ok. I have repaired all permissions, and still nothing. iPhoto is extremely slow but its just iPhoto, very bad program.
But after 5-10 minutes after wakeup iMac starts to behave normal. When Photoshop is turned on (after 5-10 min) it starts to act normal. Sometimes excel doesn't won't to turn on. Mouse icon turns rainbow circle and nothing. I force quit it and start again and after 2-3 minutes it opens.
Does anybody have an idea what should i do?

    Thank you. Here are info:

  • IOS 6 is very slow. Why!!! Can u fix that apple?

I have downloaded iOS 6 on the day it release and I have trouble with opening gmail on my iPhone and iOS 6 is very slow. I don't know what wrong with that. Did anyone know about it.

Try some basic troubleshooting steps. Clear Safari, force close the app and reset the iPad.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data.
In order to close apps in iOS 8, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
There re are ways to contact Apple directly. Look here for help.

  • I work with photoshop CS5 and the stamp is very slow. Why?

I work with photoshop CS5 and the stamp is verry slow. Why?

If you can afford it, go with a Crucial M4 SSD.
If your in a limited budget, go with a Seagate Momentus XT 750GB.
The SSD will be the fastest one and the Seagate being faster than a conventional drive.
If you decide to go conventional, avoid the Western Digital Scorpio Blue.  They tend to have issues with Macbooks.
    Good luck

  • Photostat Model HPPhotosmart Plus Prints very slow. WHY?

HP Photosmart plus Model B210 prints very slow. Is this normal. What is pages per minute for this machine??>?

    Hi,
Do you use wireless print ? If yes, when you are sending something to print how BUSY is the wireless router ? (Are you streaming videos, downloading something ...). Please bear in mind, the router can slow the printing jobs, not the printer.
    Regards.

  • Windows 7 VERY slow browsing and creating folders

    Hi!
I'm having a rather strange problem with Windows 7 RC.  I've noticed that browsing folders is generally slower than in WinXP, but still acceptable.  But lately I'm having a lot of difficulties moving files, creating folders, renaming folders and files, and even waiting for an Explorer window to refresh after some external app has created or modified a file.  Sometimes I have to wait up to 30 seconds for a new folder to be created, and another 10 or 15 after I rename it (from "New Folder" to whatever else).
This does not happen in every folder in my HDD, but I don't know exactly in which ones.  I thought it was the indexed folders, so I removed a few from the Windows Indexing database, and they were still slow (after system reboot and all).  Then I thought it would probably happen in folders that are part of a library, so I removed them and the problem was still there.  I can't think of another reason for this to happen in some folders and not others.  It seems to happen in my frequently used folders, which honestly sucks.
Just for the record, here's my system's specs:
Dell Inspiron 9400 laptop (e1705), late 2006 model
    2GB DDR2 667 ram
320 GB 7200 rpm seagate HDD, aftermarket (really fast drive, not the problem here)
Intel Core Duo (Centrino Duo) 2.0GHZ
Windows 7 RC, multiboot with WinXP
    Thanks!!!

For the benefit of those who are being driven nuts with SLLOOOWWWW Explorer 'Problems', I list the methodology which has worked for me.
As always, 'Use at Own Risk' and 'Your Mileage May Vary'.
Do NOT repeat NOT perform these steps unless youfully understand the ramifications and are prepared to live with the consequences.
BACKUP FIRST !!! - Create a RESTORE POINT!
The latest incarnations of Windows attempt to 'out-think' the user in order to provide a 'Better Computing Experience', and that is well and good for the average Joe-Blow, but NOT what the Power-User wants or expects.  There are MANY suggestions as
to the cause and solution(s) for slow Explorer response, but we have to remember just how much work is going on behind the scenes.
Much of that work is to provide 'pretty' screen enhancements and to make for 'simpler' Searching.  By foregoing some of these we can reclaim quite a lot of CPU cycles and Disk I/O for our own (Applications) use.
Before you embark on any changes, carefully assess just how you use your PC. - How important are Thumbnails? - What value does Content View really provide? - Can you implement a Folder structure and File-Naming convention which makes Snippets and Content
    indexing of little use?
You'll still be able to see local thumbnails if that's what you want, they will just be remade each time you open the folder and select Thumbnail (Large Icon) View.  This is usually less bothersome than the time loss of having a 'Master' Thumbnail
cache maintained and updated for every file operation.
Certainly, some 3rd Party 'add-ons' (Power Archiver for one! & similar) may cause problems, as can poorly configured A/V programs (realtime checking of Notepad for instance, every time it is opened??? Why not bring back the old innoculate method?) -
    but I digress.
For many, the slow Explorer problem exists without any of the suspects / causes mentioned in previous Posts, or elsewhere online.
I repeat: 'This methodology has worked for me - Your Mileage May Vary'.
Now for the fun & games:
Kill the time and resource hog 'Indexing Services' - Plenty of advice on how to do that is available online.
    DISALLOW Indexing on all volumes.
To retain the ability to search for my files, I have been using the Search Everything tool from:
http://www.voidtools.com/ which searches ONLY on local or removable NTFS volumes. (ie NOT FAT32 USB Drives!)  But that poses very little problem when I examine my real-world use of any Search Tool.
SE needs Administrator privileges for its low-level file-system access, certainly not an issue to have a responsive Global Search at your fingertips.
With 34.5 Gb (> 137,000 files in > 20,000 folders) on HDD, and 627 Gb (> 2,300,000 files in > 82,500 folders) on a Portable USB Drive, Search Everything has about 74Kb RAM usage and the db file is 10.5 Mb on disk - not a huge overhead.
The initial run occupied about 10 minutes of my setting options and less than 5 minutes for the building of the database.
The online FAQ has plenty of information including how to use wildcards, Path Matching, boolean operators and regex use.
With a lean mean responsive search at hand, now to clobber some more of the 'features' which are supposed to 'help' us in our computing experience...
    Big Guns Time!
    Start Group Policy Editor -
    Start > Run > gpedit.msc
    Navigate to:
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Explorer
Locate and ENABLE the settings as listed:
    1. Turn off the display of thumbnails and only display icons on network folders
Disables the display of thumbnails on network folders in Windows Explorer.
Windows Explorer displays thumbnails on network folders by default.
If you enable this policy. Windows Explorer will only display icons and never display thumbnails on network folders.
That gets rid of the first time-waster - Network access is slow enough without adding the extra traffic for thumbnails, and many PCs are stand-alone anyway.
    2. Turn off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files.
Turns off the caching of thumbnails in hidden thumbs.db files.
This policy setting allows you to configure Windows Explorer to cache thumbnails of items residing in network folders in hidden thumbs.db files.
If you enable this policy setting, Windows Explorer does not create, read from, or write to thumbs.db files.
If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Windows Explorer creates, reads from, and writes to thumbs.db files.
This goes hand-in hand with 1.
    3. Turn off Windows Libraries features that rely on indexed file data
This policy setting allows you to turn off Windows Libraries features that need indexed file metadata to function properly. If you enable this policy, some Windows Libraries features will be turned off to better handle included folders that have been
redirected to non-indexed network locations. Setting this policy will:
    * Disable all Arrangement views except for "By Folder"
    * Disable all Search filter suggestions other than "Date Modified" and "Size"
    * Disable view of file content snippets in Content mode when search results are returned
    * Disable ability to stack in the Context menu and Column headers
    * Exclude Libraries from the scope of Start search
This policy will not enable users to add unsupported locations to Libraries.
If you enable this policy, Windows Libraries features that rely on indexed file data will be disabled.
If you disable or do not configure this policy, all default Window Libraries features will be enabled.
Well, with Indexing turned OFF, this one is a real no-brainer, isn't it?
    4. Turn off the display of snippets in Content view mode
Disables the display of snippets when Content view mode is turned on.
Windows Explorer shows snippets in Content view mode by default.
If you enable this policy, Windows Explorer will not display snippets in Content view mode.
That stops peeking into every file and trying to decode the snippet - MORE time-saving.
    5. Turn off caching of thumbnail pictures
This setting controls whether the thumbnail views are cached.
If you enable this setting, thumbnail views are not cached.
If you disable or do not configure this setting, thumbnail views are cached.
Note: For shared corporate workstations or computers where security is a top concern, you should enable this setting to turn off the thumbnail view cache, because the thumbnail cache can be read by everyone.
It (IMHO) is faster to generate the thumbnails as needed (for my usage anyway), rather than to be attempting to maintain a global cache each time a file is created, modified, deleted or moved.
This completely cuts out the thumbnail caching overheads, and makes quite an impressive speed difference.  Even on an old 1.7 GHz Laptop with 2 Gb RAM and an Intel 915GM Graphics Card (NOT the best choice for Win 7 by any means!).
    6. Turn off numerical sorting in Windows Explorer
This policy setting allows you to have file names sorted literally (as in Windows 2000 and earlier) rather than in numerical order.
If you enable this policy setting, Windows Explorer will sort file names by each digit in a file name (for example, 111 < 22 < 3).
If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Windows Explorer will sort file names by increasing number value (for example, 3 < 22 < 111).
Do I REALLY want to waste the time on this procedure? If I want to sequence my files, I'll prefix the filenames with 0's - 003 < 022 < 111. Not a problem!
Subjectively, these changes make for a much more responsive system.
Objectively, moving over 2.3 Gb (7,500+ files) via 'Drag & Drop' from HDD to USB Drive shrank from 12 Mins+ to about 8 Mins. Explorer did NOT 'freeze', and I could freely change the displayed folders in both the Source and Target Explorer windows.
I hope that this is of use to others, it has served me well for the last several months.
A few minor delays when wanting thumbnail views, but certainly FAR LESS DELAY than before the changes, and
    no more stalled Explorer.

  • Fix for a very slow browser

    Hello All,
    I hope this helps.
Here's my problem. My browser, when wireless, had slowed down dramatically. Loading pages took forever. I tried it at home and the office and both were slow.
When I plugged it directly into the Ethernet it was blazingly fast. Made me want to cry
I tried many of the things suggested here including clearing cache etc.
Here's what worked for me. Corrupt network config file I guess.
    System Preferences
    Network
Location tab click to "New Location"
Name it Apple (or anything you like)
    Click Apply
See if that works for you. Fixed 2 weeks of frustration for me!

Thanks for posting this Justin. I'm sure it will help others wondering what happened to their browser speed,
Also, consider adding 4.2.2.2 to your Network>Airport>TCP> DNS servers box, selecting "apply". This too may help in the speed department.

  • Compressor merging distributed quicktime components VERY SLOW. WHY?

I've got an 8 core mac pro, quickcluster with services, 4 instances.
The quickcluster works GREAT. it's super fast, good CPU Utilization. awesome.
the problem is when all the segments are done and compressor merges the bits together, it goes VERY VERY slowly, in fact it takes much much longer to re-assemble the parts of a 43gb prores file than it does to actually compress it. Activity monitor shows disk transfer speeds of 20mb/s max, and CPU utilization drops to zero. batch monitor says that is has no time remaining.. yet this process takes an hour or more.
I have compressor set up to NOT copy source to cluster since the cluster is in fact my local machine.
rendering to "this computer" only uses maybe 30% of my CPU.
***? why is is so slow? Is there anything I can do to speed it up? for one thing, It seems like the QT segments could be rendered to another drive, and there might be a bit less thrashing that way. but this slowness really is remakably silly for such a powerful system. I mean REALLY silly.

    Somoflange,
Yes, the "overhead" to which you are referring is something I have experienced as well. One of the Apple Pro Apps guys said to be aware of this problem; that at a certain point, depending on input file size and number of instances you have set the rejoining of the segmented AV clips may start to take longer than it takes to render / compress them.
We experience a major problem with this "overhead" while encoding lots of 1-hour blocks of programming into MPEG-2 transport streams, across 4 Xserves and 1 Mac Pro (the Mac Pro set as cluster controller). Eventhough your setup is all local being a QuickCluster, it sounds like the same problem. We were crunching 1 hour files in under 10 minutes, but the rejoining was taking much longer.
The fix, for us, was dialing down the number of instances in your Qmaster prefs. We did some benchmark tests with the same input file for all 8 dif't instance numbers. For longer files, it actually was faster to only use 2 instances.

  • Just installed snow leopard and office for mac - now my computer is running very slow.  Why?

I've recently installed snow leopard and office for mac - now my computer is running very slowly - why?

Which version of office did you install? If its 2008 the early version had some problems and you will want to update the office software to i think it is 12.3.0
If it is 2011 you might want to do the same thing.

  • Very slow browsing speeds after 10.4.6 update

after updating to 10.4.6 Firefox, Safari are so slow compared to previous browsing speeds on a cable modem.
Speed has slowed from better than T1 to low DSL.
have run Cocktail, cron scripts, light cache cleaning etc,
    DiskWarrior says all is good...
Disk Utility says all is good...
    permissions are good....
TechTool reports, "A Fragment Length is Invalid" - MainAutomation_carbon.8li
this is the only problem found.
Would this be the cause of the slow down?
If so, can I delete this file,, would a new one be created?
or what can repair this file?
If the above is not the cause of the slow down, any
suggestions on solving this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Have you created a new account and named it "test" to see how your browsers work in that User acct? (That will tell if your problem is systemwide or limited to your User acct.) This account is just for test, do nothing further with it.
Open System Preferences >> Accounts >> "+" make it an admin account.
Let us know and we'll troubleshoot this further.

  • Very slow browsing / pages failing to load etc

    Hi,
Over the last few weeks we've been having browsing issues on multiple devices where pages are taking forever to load if at all. We're sometimes having to refresh the browser 3 or 4 times to get a page to load correctly.
Sites like speedtest, once I've got it to load show low ping speeds and the Upload / Download speeds are what I would expect on our line. I've rebooted the router and modem but this resolves the problem for a day or so and then connection speeds gradually get worse and worse.
    Please advise.
    Regards
    Neil.

If you are having similar issues like me you`ll find that https sites will load just fine as will http as long as you tunnel through a VPN (to same uploading end site) - i.e. something like hotspot shield etc for those that don`t use a private VPN for work traffic.
It is just http port 80 traffic being throttled to within an inch of life in my case....  although it hasn`t happened in the last few days so maybe they do read my tickets and just don`t bother to respond to any of them
Good luck, and try https on whatever site... if they run a secure socket version you`ll probably find it`ll load normally
    Regards

  • Export in Premiere CS6 is very slow, but why?

    Hello,
    I work with a
    Intel i7 3770k @ 3.5 GHz
    16GB RAM
    GeForce GTX 560 TI
    2TB RAID-0
In this project I did the color correction via After Effects and replaced the clips in the Premiere Pro timeline with AE Compositions after I edited them.
Now when exporting it takes about 2,5 hours for a 12 minute video. The cpu only works on 22% and the ram on 35-40%
That never happened before. A 12 min video took about 30 minutes to export and the cpu was at 100%. Why not now? Is that because of the links to the AE Compositions as it's the first time I work with these?
How can I provide more cpu power to the exporting process?
    Thanks for any help.

    by the way... I am exporting h.264 1920x1080 with 13 Mbits/s
