  • Photoshop CC very slow to open after Win 8.1 upgrade

    Hi guys.
I was wondering can you help me. I have tried extensive google searches with no real conclusive answer. I recently upgraded from Win 8 to 8.1. Since the upgrade Photoshop CC is very slow to open. It can take 1-2 minutes to boot up fully. Lightroom 5.2 & bridge open fine. I have a pretty fast system with i7 3.4Ghz Processor & 32Gb of Ram with the OS running on a 256Gb SSD Hard Drive. PS CC booted up fine on Win 8 but not anymore since the upgrade. The only plug-in I run is OnOne Photosuite 8. I have even tried disabling loading extenions at start up from the preferences menu but it makes no difference as it can stil take 1-2 minutes to open. Any help appreciated??

There was a Photoshop update that corrected a problem Adobe had accidentally introduced with a link that went to a network resource that is not available for anyone outside Adobe.  But that was a while ago.  See:  Re: Photoshop CC startup slow (much harddisk access)
I've had Win 8.1 all along and never had an update cause a slowdown.
Unfortunately problems that go away on their own often return on their own.  I hope that's not the case for you and that it continues to work properly.

  • Very slow program launch

    1.83Ghz / 512mb Mini that's about a month old.
I have used Onyx for the Maintenance and Optimisation.
    Restart.
    Wait for everything to load.
    Get Firefox in Quicksilver
    Press Return
24 seconds later Firefox opens and starts loading the 3 homepages.
Everything is slow to launch. I can't see that memory can be a factor when all I'm doing above is opening a browser.
I assume the above can be speeded up?

I can understand the frustration, not least because I can assure you that by and large, quick and efficient is a good way to describe the normal workings of MacOS.
I can tell you, for example, that on my 1GHz G4 powermac (that I am using at this moment) Firefox launches from the dock in 8.9 seconds. Safari in 6.5. This system is several factors slower than your Intel mini. The G4 does, however have 1.5Gb RAM, though it currently has 8 applications open also (excluding Firefox).
I was looking on the Mozilla site for information as to whether the current version of Firefox is Intel-native of not, but there is no clear indication one way or another. O see a reference to an earlier version that IS universal binary though, so that would seem to suggest v2 is also. In any event, you can check when it's running by opening Activity Monitor, which will indicate PPC processes.
There's no doubt that additional memory will help overall, but I would urge you to consider the other issues I mentioned in the last message - permissions, prebinding, caches etc, because these can have a major impact on system performance. I'm assuming you have some familiarity with these issues since at the outset you mentioned OnyX, a good general purpose tool that deals with exactly these matters, and to consider re-downloading the Firefox installer on the mini and then installing again.
I don't have regular access to an Intel mini to see how it performs, though I have set a few up for users in my networks and not found them noticeably slow in any obvious way - even using Firefox which a couple of my users prefer. Thus I would not agree that such behavior as you describe is particularly normal. Not that that comments helps much!!

  • Starting EAS is very slow -Web Launcher for Administration Services Console

    Hi all,
When a user has not been connected to EAS for more or less amount of time
starting the EAS via (Web Launcher for Administration Services Console) takes a very long time.
When ESA is started also opening the “Essbase Server” node and then also opening the “Application” node takes a long time.
    This a very annoying.
Is there any chance to accelerate this?
    Any hint is welcome.
    Thank you in advance!
    Andre

    Hi,
Oh sorry, I forgot to mention: Version 11.1.2.1 in a distributed environment Win2008R3 64bit.
From one of the servers I also used EAS with the same outcome - well seems the Service behind is the same one.
And as I wrote this is not always case. for example just this morning it was fast as I expected it to be.
However there must be a reason for the occasional slowliness and customers usually has less understanding for suche an up and down of performance.
    Any idea?
    Thank you in advance!

  • Both mail and address book very slow to launch on 10.6 and 10.6.1

Like unimaginably slow. After clicking on the applications, I was able to perform a google search, find this forum, and and start this thread before either application became active.
I am running 10.6.1 and have had this problem since 10.6. not before.
I upgraded my system, I did not install Snow Leopard fresh, and I really hope I dont have to to solve this problem. So much for the speed portion of the Snow Leopard improvements!
Has anybody else seen this issue? I certainly hope so because it's terrible to have to track down a problem like this alone.

Thank you for this link. Here is the process I used to fix it.
1 - I had one smart group in address book, with a NOT variable. (if contact is NOT in any group)
2 - click on the smart folder, wait a long time for it to be selected.
3 - delete the smart folder
    4 - close address book
    5 - reboot.
6 - both Mail and Address book now open very quickly. Problem solved
    Thanks again!
    EDIT:
re-creating the same smart group brings back the same problem!!! So we have broken address book functionality in 10.6? just awesome....

  • [SOLVED] Very slow application launch in KDE

Hi, some days ago a nasty makefile tried to delete my / directory while I was trying to compile a program. While it didin't touch anything in my system folders, it made a big mess on my home. I recovered almost everything, but since then KDE is behaving strangely. In particular, launching an application with lancelot or with the standard KDE launcher has become painfully slow. All the KDE applications are affected, but the issue is particularly annoying with firefox. Launching it from the command line, however, resolves everything. Chromium is launched quickly in any case.
I deleted .mozilla and .kde4, but the problem is still there. I have no idea to what look at to try to understand what's going on, so I would appreciate some help...
    Thanks.

Oh, you don't have to rebuild everything. Backup your configuration also, then put it back one by one and see what has gone wrong. (All those hidden files started with a dot ".").
I did mean those files are also important data, who would want to lose all the configuration that took so long to do
Shouldn't take too long to figure it out. If it's my configuration, I think I can find out what wrong in less than 15 minutes.
Good luck if you choose to do so.

  • Logic Pro 8 app. very slow to launch. Much slower than LP7

Since upgrading to LP8, logic is extremely slow to startup (5 minutes or longer) I haven't moved any files since running LP7 and have run disk utlilty. Unfortunately it didn't help. Anyone else had a similar problem or anyone got any solutions?

I have finally found out the reason for S L O W email send using Mail with AT&T email ISP.
AT&T has finally updated their SMTP outgoing mail server with one address for ALL the various email types, like my bellsouth.net account, that had been on separate AT&T servers. Here's what to do for Mail:
Account type: POP SSL checked on both incoming and outgoing
Incoming Mail Server: pop.att.yahoo.com and you must have email address and password for authentication
And here is what fixed the slow outgoing problem . . . the new outgoing address is:
smtp.att.yahoo.com I clicked "use default ports" and it worked fine but FYI they are using 465 . . . also email address and password required.

  • Safari very slow to launch after reboot

I am running Safari 6.02.  I've noticed that if I reboot my MBP, the first time I launch Safari it takes almost 2 1/2 minutes before the first blank page appears.  Firefox, on the other hand, takes about 30 seconds.  Subsequent launces of Safari take only a few seconds.  Any advice?

Ashka, Thanks for the suggestions but I'm afraid I've tried restarting, repairing permissions, ditching the preference file even reinstalling all to no avail. On my wife's MacBook Pro which is a 17" Core 2 Duo we have found no problems at all.

  • Very slow loading of Acrobat Win forum

The main page of the Acrobat Windows forum is taking extremely long times for loading. To my ignorant eyes, the problem seems to be related with this user and/or his/her avatar: ;sadklhasd;flkj

Phillip, the problem I reported (t
he extra long loading time of the Acrobat Windows forum main page)
is solved, at least for me. This coincides with the disappea
rance from the list of messages of the name of
the person whose avatar took a very long time t

If you are still unable to get at that person's profile, that's another problem, although it's most probably related with, and perhaps even the cause of, the one I reported.

  • Why are iWorks Programs very slow to launch?

I cannot believe how long it takes to launch iWorks programs, started a few weeks ago, before that, they were like lightning.  I installe Mountain Lion and there was no improvement.  I launched Pages just now and it took 2:45 from clicking on the icon, to get the document I wanted.  I also get lock ups with the computer that requres me to shut down completely and unplug everything.  There does not seem to be any trend in the lock ups, somethimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.  I had a problem similar to this a couple of years ago and we went through 3 hard drives, and it still didn't solve my problem.  Any thoughts?
    Thank you.

Thank you for your prompt reply. I can and will do that but if this, in fact, does help what will it tell me? From what I know about Safe Mode it loads only the "bare bones" windows settings which I certainly would NOT be happy running all the time just to solve my problem.
A reply would be greatly appreciated and thank you.
Have a good day/night, whichever it is where you are. wink

  • Numbers very slow to launch after 10.5.2

I posted this first on the Numbers forum but got little response.
Since updating to 10.5.2 Numbers takes 5 or more minutes to launch on my iMac 2Ghz Core Duo while it works perfectly on my MacBook Pro (17" Core 2 Duo). The update was carried out the same way and the change to operation was immediate. It makes no difference whether I open an existing file or try to create a new one and the delay is the same regardless of which template is chosen. I have repaired permissions, restarted, even reloaded Numbers all with no effect. This is making Numbers unusable on the iMac and any help getting this solved would be much appreciated.

Ashka, Thanks for the suggestions but I'm afraid I've tried restarting, repairing permissions, ditching the preference file even reinstalling all to no avail. On my wife's MacBook Pro which is a 17" Core 2 Duo we have found no problems at all.

  • Intel Wireless-N 7260 Slow Internet Speed - Solved (Win 8.1 64-bit, Wireless N @ 2.4GHz)

Obviously there are numerous factors that can affect speed. But if you have reason to believe it's just your laptop try the configuration below. Worked for me. Good Luck.
    Laptop:
    Lenovo Ideapad Y510P, Windows 8.1 64-bit.
    Internet Connection:
Comcast Xfinity Blast advertised at 50Mbps.
    Network Environment:
Home Wifi, Linksys E1500 Router Wireless N @ 2.4 GHz. Firmware Version: 1.0.06
Apartment Building, ~15 visible other Wifi networks.
Devices with 15 feet of router.
    Problem Symptoms:
Download speeds of 2-3 Mbps. Upload speeds were typically much higher, around 10Mbps as should be expected.
    Control Reference:
    ~50Mbps using ethernet cable.
Older Laptop getting ~45Mbps over Wifi.
    Solution:
From what I gathered, the problem with the card happens on Wireless N 2.4MHz routers.
    Driver version : 17.13.2.2
    File : Wireless_17.13.2_De164.zip
Downloaded from : http://goo.gl/S3HOCL (Intel download page. URL was too long to post)
Installation : Unzip to a folder, Run the DPInst64.exe application - does a 'simple' driver install. No Bloatware / fluff.
Device Settings: I'm listing only the values that I changed along the way.
    Device Manager > Network Adapters > Intel(R) Wireless-N 7260 > Properties > Advanced.
    802.11n Channel Width for 2.4GHz : Auto
Ad Hoc Qos Mode : WMM Disabled
HT Mode : HT Mode (ie ON. You need this for Wireless N. If Disabled you can only connect to Wireless b/g/mixed)
    Roaming Aggressiveness : 1. Lowest
Throughput Booster : Enabled (Not sure if this is necessary. It's an optional feature giving priority over other devices)
    Transmit Power : 3. Medium
U-APSD Support : Disabled (According to numerous posts, this is critical)
    Wireless Router Wireless Settings:
    Network Mode : Wireless-N Only
Channel Width : 20 MHz Only. (My only other option is 'Auto (20 MHz or 40 MHz). On 'Auto...' every device I have really slows).
Channel : Auto (I had this set to '3' since day one to avoid the channels other Routers in my building are using. Defintely noticed improvement but it seems its not necessary with this configuration. Could be due to other networks not being used at the time of testing. I'm keeping an eye on this).
Bluetooth Network Connection (Personal Area Network):
    Disabled
(I have a running bluetooth mouse which is not affected by disabling this)
    Result:
    Testing duration 6 hours, ~ 10 times.
For the settings. most likely there's some that are not necessary. But after working on this for 3 days, I'm not changing anything for the time being.
    Blurb:
I'm posting this to hopefully help others who have this issue. Researching the problem I found numerous lengthy fourm threads filled with frustrated users...one on Intel's support site was 18 pages long with literally months of posts with several users discussing a class action lawsuit...enough said.
I tried pretty much all the posted solutions, lots of different driver versions, device settings, router settings. There's so much misinformation out there it's not funny. Eventually I called Lenovo Tech Support who tried simialr things and momentarily got it a bit better and wanted to say it was fixed. I hung on a kept testing the slow speed soon returned. Then they tried all the usual nonsense and excuses and gave up, passing me off to "Premium Support:" who wanted to charge me to investigate the problem. The "premium" techs were really poor and sounded like a bunch of clueless hacks just trying to get you to pay for the service while simultaneously throwing in gems like "how far is your laptop from the router...that can affect your speed"...anyway, forget that I thought.
When I first got the Lenovo Ideapad Y510P last year I had the same or similar issue. I don't recall how I fixed it then but I got it to ~20-30Mbps. While well below my older laptop's speed it was perfectly adequate. That was last August. Earlier this year there was an update for Intels stuff in a Windows update. I think the problem started again with that although I'm not 100% sure. Certainly I didn't manually install new drivers or change anything on my network set-up.

Intel Wireless-N 7260 works at only 2.4Ghz. Refer the specifications of this wireless card:

  • ITunes 10.6 very slow to start up

I installed iTunes 10.6 under Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) and it is VERY slow to launch.  I uninstalled it (fortunately I had backed up my iTunes library first) and reinstalled 10.5.  It is significantly faster.
Has anyone else experienced this issue, and, if so, what is the fix (other than uninstalling it)?

  • IMac is very slow after switching to OSX Mavericks

I'm still getting used to the philosophy of this site, so excuse me if I stray.  I had posted in a different thread and was asked to start a new thread.
I have a 20-inch, Early 2008 iMac and I've been upgraded to 10.9.4 for a few weeks.  I did have the fan problem, but sorted that out, forget what I did but may be able to retrace my steps.
But, the machine is so slow now - really not tolerable.  Every program I launch just takes a lot of time.  Even launching Textedit that used to just flash up is sow.  Safari is now very slow to launch.  Google, which I use all the time and was normally slow, is now excruciating.  Logging on, I have to wait a long time to even put in the PW.  Once open, most applications are tolerable.  But, like others have mentioned, the machine is just slower at everything.  I watch "Activity Monitor" to see what's using what for memory and CPU, and nothing new with that compared to 10.6.8 except it's not as good giving me the information I want in an quickly readable form.
Do I need to just go back to 10.6.8, or is this Mac's hardware is not compatible with 10.9.4?  It seemed that the upgrade was recommended for this machine.
I'd appreciate any thoughts, recommendation, suggestions. Thanks!
PS:  I was asked to send top 5 CPU and then the average User CPU....
    Firefox                    6.7%
    Activity Monitor     1.0 %
    Window Server     0.8%
    Firefox Plugin         1.1%
    kernel_task          0.4%
    User:                    4 - 11%
As you know, these constantly change, but I just jotted things down in the list above.  Nothing was taking any serious time.  Firefox will momentarily go up to 30%.  I know when Time Machine is slowing things down because I can see it backing up with the icon on the menu bar, but that's not only when it's slow.  It's just always slow starting applications or opening new windows in Firefox, opening a new window in Word or Excel.  I always have Activity Monitor open to watch for anything unusual, like if Firefox is bogging me down.
The question is should I expect this OS to be bogging this machine down, in general?  Thanks!

It would be nice to know how much RAM is installed. A report of this would help:
You should use Activity Monitor to check for:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
Download and install EtreCheck 1.9.12. Run on your system and copy and post results here.

That's probably a function of the machine. On Vista (Core 2
    Duo E6600 w/4GB
RAM), Fireworks launches in less than 5 seconds. Fireworks 8
    actually took a
    bit longer.
I think there are a lot of variables to how an application
    launches and
works from one system to another.
