Very Slow Downloading

Hi I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard. Before downloading a file was very quick. Now it takes 30 minutes to download a 6 mb application. Website browsing is fast though, it's just downloading that's very slow. I'm using Safari. Any help is greatly appreciated

OK, three more easy things to check.
1. After the upgrade, did you repair permissions?
If nor, do that now, OK?
2. Do you have another User Account on your Mac?
If not, made one called "test. Here's how to get there:
Apple Icon>System Preferences>Accounts.
Click the plus sign down at the bottom of the pane
and add a new "test" user.
(You will be asked for your Administrative Password (the main one for your Mac.)
Click OK. Make it administrative. Does your network work any better in the new account?
3. Do you have any antivirus or firewall apps on there?

  • Very Slow Download Speed

    Hi,
I am experiencing very slow downloading speeds, when I am just normally downloading something in Safari, or downloading a torrent with upto 100 seeders.
The maximum download speed I have seen on my computer is 80kb/s, which is painfully slow for downloading the Adobe trials, when they reach about 1gb.
I have a router, connected to 2 computers, and speedtest.net has told me that my download speed is 1mb/s.
It seems like download speeds are being restricted to 80kb/s, so is there any way to 'unlock' full potential downloading speeds?
    Any help much appreciated!

I think you're making the same mistake a lot of people make.
The maximum download speed I have seen on my computer is 80kb/s
Safari reports downloads in kiloBYTES per second, not kilobits, so that 80KB/s translates to about 640 kilobits per second.
downloading the Adobe trials, when they reach about 1gb
Really? 1 gigabit per second? I assume that's a typo.
speedtest.net has told me that my download speed is 1mb/s
therefore your downloads are progressing at about 64% of maximum. That sounds about right - you won't get maximum throughput for every download - it will vary based on server location, network load and more.

No magical keystroke remedy. The causes for this can be complicated.

  • MacBook Pro: Very slow download

Hi, I'm experiencing very slow download speed with Macbook pro recently. Tried download the same file using a Window notebook worked fine. please help.
I was downloading a spreadsheet from Hotmail: Download speed on Mac: 700b/s; Download speed on Window Notebook: 2Mb/s.

    That's insane.
Are you sure you don't mean 30Mbps?
Anyway, have you downloaded a test file hosted via ftp by your ISP?

  • Very slow download speeds with ATT U-Verse

    Hello,
Experiencing very slow download speeds with Macbook Pro 2011, on Lion,  and ATT UVerse Max, which should allow for an avg. 11-12 MBPS speed. Instead, I get a fluctuating 60-370 kbps speed. I am not experiencing this problem on my Windows machines (Laptop running Windows 7 and Desktop on XP), it is only affecting the Macbook pro. I wonder if this issue is a known problem with ATT U-Verse and Macs, I spent hours yesterday with their support online and they couldn't help me, stating that from their side all settings were OK; the first representative from ATT re-booted the router remotely and that seemed to work for about 10 minutes, and then it went back to a crawling speed...
    Any suggestions welcome!
    Thanks

Do you have QOS enabled in your router? Did you try plugging the win7 laptop directly and check the speed?

  • Very slow download speed with intermittent halts

    Need some help.
I run Apple os/x latest version and have since yesterday begun to experience constant very slow download speeds.
I have rebooted the router and I have reset it. I have tested with wireless and wired into router. No real change.
The results are below and are pretty consistent no matter when or with what computer I test it with.
This is very frustrating and I would like to know if anyone has experienced this and if there is anything I can do before calling for service.

  • Very Slow Downloads & Timeouts.......Interesting Info!

    Hi,
Like many other users have posted I have been having problems with very slow downloads in the last few days and connection problems to the itunes store where the rest of the internet was fine.
After trying disabling firewalls, upgrading to IE7 etc. etc. I tried using Anonymizer SSL to bypass my ISP and any country restrictions and create a direct pipe from my PC to the anonymizer servers in the USA. I should add I am in Japan by the way and access the US store but have had no problems up until a few days ago.
Low and behold my download speed is back.
I am awaiting a response from the ISP whether they have changed anything but I think it unlikely.
So this leaves the following options for myself and other users:
    1) The ISP is capping traffic to itunes. Other American sites are unaffected so it is not a country specific problem.
    2) iTunes itself is denying a suitable level of service to users accessing the american store outside of the US based on IP address!
These are the only two options I can think of right now. I believe number 1 is unlikely knowing my ISP but I will add to the post if that proves to be correct.
If anyone has any more technical ideas why a normal ISP connection would be slow wheras a SSL tunnel direct to the states is faster I would be very interested to know and may help a lot of other people out who are outside the US and access the store.

    Hi spike_japan,
Thanks for the info! However, I've been trying to find a software that does this for Mac comps, but i cant find one. Also, they only work when you want to surf the web anonymously.
Can you enlighten me on how you bypassed your isp to connect straight to the anonymizer servers in the USA? I'm also using the iTunes store and for the past 2 weeks, i've been getting really slow downloads. I've been downloading a tv episode for over a week one - not one season, one episode. It says 80 hours remaining. So please help me out.
I'm sure many peope are having this problem too. Thanks in advance.

  • TS3795 very slow downloads.....

I'm getting very slow download speeds from my brand new iMac i7 27inch. where my pc is really fast on the same network. Makes no difference if I'm on wifi or ethernet... any advice?

If you're using Google DNS, Open DNS, or similar free DNS services, this may be what is affecting you. Try puting in a static DNS setting such as the following:
    12.127.16.67
    209.244.0.3 - 209.244.0.4
    4.2.2.1 - 4.2.2.6
    For Mac users (Lion):
    System Preferences > Network
Now make sure your appropriate connection you are utilizing whether it be your WiFi, Ethernet or otherwise is highlighted and currently active, then click "Advanced..."
Click the DNS tab, and then click the "+" icon under DNS servers to add in one or more of the above static DNS IPv4 settings.
Click "OK" and make sure to hit "Apply".
    Windows users:
Follow these instructions to add in static DNS IP settings:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Change-TCP-IP-settings
My apologies, I don't have a Windows machine in front of my to walk you through the steps quickly.
Hope this helps everyone, it worked for me! Went from 80 KB/s to 5 MB/s
Please like this post if it fixed your issues!

  • E1200 router: very slow download speeds, ok uploady got

I recently set up a new E1200 router to replace my old one. We are having problems with very slow download speeds (often <0.10 Mbps) even while the upload speeds are OK (8-10 Mbps). Our previous download speed over wifi was 10-15 Mbps.
When I first set it up, the download speed was very poor on the initial computer. After fooling around, it was fine. I don't know what I did that made it speed up. However, my wife's computer has had very poor download speeds. After rebooting my computer, the download speed has also dropped bak to <0.10. I was able to stream Hulu on my Wii just fine an hour ago.
    What could the problem be?

So we could have this isolated, check how much speed you’re getting straight to the modem so we’ll have some point of comparison that from your internet provider. If through the router, you have struggles with not getting an acceptable value for download speed especially if it only happens with the wireless connection, you can try these: change the wireless channel and the wireless security on the router. If on the router, you have the channel set to auto by default change it to (3,6,9,11), just have to play around with it. Moreover, for the wireless security, select WPA2 Personal. If that doesn’t make any difference, update the firmware of the router, reset and have it reconfigured.

  • Why i have very very slow downloading speed on wifi on iphone5

While on wifi I am experiencing very slow downloading speed on iPhone 5. My iPhone 5 is a brand new phone, I have to wait for hours to complete a running download of about 40mb or so. Please help me and tell me if there is any solution to that. On the same wifi network I have the new iPad and iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, all are working perfectly getting perfect speed while downloading but I can't on iPhone 5.

What you did was fine. Leopard is a little different to 10.4.11, but:
Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • FF 27.0.1 very slow download/resolving clicked links/resolve reloads. Computer slows to a halt. New Win7.

Firefox has been running extraordinarily slow. Pages takes sometimes minutes (really) to download/resolve; clicking on links on a page takes many seconds, up to a minute, to register, then the click takes more time to resolve. Autoreloading pages take many minutes to resolve. While all this is going on, the computer slows down, and typing will slow to an almost halt. Characters take many seconds to show up, selected text takes many seconds to register, etc. This is a new computer, 12G of RAM, lots of hard drive. My bf is currently sharing this computer and uses IE. I'm now filling in this form on IE because FF was so painfully slow. And, btw, I don't have a large number of tabs open. About 15 right now.
I took one suggestion from a FF support page and revised my upon-opening to restore all last pages/tabs. I then closed and reopened FF. It is better, but IE has been open at least as long, has many, many more tabs open, and is using a ridiculous amount of memory per tab/groups of tabs, and it is lightning fast. I used to use IE, switched to FF about 2 years ago when IE became too unstable...but I am very seriously considering switching back to IE if FF continues to slow down so drastically and so quickly. And continues to crash without warning. Please don't suggest opening in safe mode....not going to happen. Apparently, from what I can read on your site and other places, FF has become another bloated program that becomes useless after a short time - many, many complaints of very slow loading, etc. Can you please fix this, please.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full, unrestricted, access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • Safari very slow downloading files

When I bought my MacBook Pro in 2009 I used Safari for few days then I switched to Firefox, and the reason for that is that downloading any kind of files goes very slow to around 5 KB/s while downloading the same file in any other browser is so fast. Now after the release of Safari 4 I thought this problem could be solved but here again the exact same problem and I really love the new safari except that this problem is really annoying me. By the way browsing is working perfectly fine.
    I have a 2 Mpbs ADSL connection.
    any idea?

Preference files retain information about the default and custom settings for a particular application. Also, they store information accumulated over time not directly related to a preference setting.
In Safari's case, this retained and accumulated information comes from a variety of sources within and outside of Safari. For example, 3rd party add-ons, such as Glims, store information in the preference file pertinent to their operation and settings.
Sometimes, corruption occurs if this information is incorrectly coded in the software. In that instance, as Safari accesses the preference file, it will crash due to a flaw in the data stream. Another example - updating Safari from one version to the next might trigger corruption if the 3rd party content within the preference file is not compatible with the new version's operation.

  • Very slow downloading webpages with Firefox 3.6.8; no problem with IE;

Firefox is very slow loading web pages. Was OK with the old version. This happened after I downloaded latest upgraded version 3.6.8
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== after loading new version of Firefox, 3.6.8

Not only do I have the snail version of firefox but I keep getting messages that Firefox can't find the server, or that it has times out. I have had to retry numerous times. I just had a problem with FF opening a one-page pdf. After what seemed like forever, I copied and pasted the url into IE and it opened almost immediately. After I read the pdf and downloaded it, I closed IE and saw that FF was still in the process of opening the page. I loved FF,but don't have time to wait until my next birthday to view/open a site. Incidentally, my birthdate is 07/11. This is seriously hampering my participation in two online graduate courses. I have been running Win 7 since March, but not had these problems until recent updates. I even had firefox set to notify me and ask before installing updates, but it was changed to automatically install updates when I just checked. I am the only user of this computer (live alone).
''' ALSO''', when I checked update history, there is an update for (3.6.4) that shows as successful that took place on '''Wednesday December 31, 1969.''' I don't believe that Firefox existed in 1969 or Internet Explorer for that matter. I couldn't highlight and copy the info in my history, but did copy with pen and paper. This is what was showing for the 3.6.4 update:
    '''FireFox 3.6.4 (20100611143157)'''
    Security Update
'''Installed''' on '''Wednesday, December 31, 1969''' 6:00:00 PM
Status The update was successfully installed
There is definitely something amiss unless the creators of FireFox have mastered time travel!
Since I do not have the time to open FireFox and check here to see if a solution to these problems has been determined (based on s-l-o-w performance of FF over the past week or so) would someone email me with a link that I can access through another browser, if necessary?
