Very slow export to quicktime movie

Its taking over an hour to export a minuet and a half QT file. FC seemed to export the file correctly at first but after the timing bar reached 100% and dissapeared, FC imediantaly went into the spining beach ball of death, then finally snapped out of that and now is "writing Video..." extreemly slow. Activity monitor and Force Quit say that FC is not responding for a few minuets but snaps out of that eventually.
This issue seems to happen randomly as I have seen it take place on three seporate machines, each with different media files. All media is formatted the same way and exported the same way. This issue does not happen every time a QT is exported, but is happening enough to be a concern.
Below is the set up I am working on.
* FCP HD 5.1.1
* Imac Intel w/ 2gb ram
* project saved on local drive
* media saved to external Graid drive via firewire 400 w/ 107.69 GB available
* shot and edited footage in project is DVCPRO HD 720p60
Exporting to a QTmovie as the following:
* 00:01:45:25 duration
* DVCPRO HD 720p60 compressor
* self contained
* frames not recompressed on export
I have tried this process excluding the external drive working 100% locally and have encountered similar slow behavior. FCP Preferences have been deleted. This issue is not a specific project dependent occurrence, as I have made test projects each of which only contained 3 media files roughly 700mb to 1.5gb in size each all shot DVCPRO HD 720p60. I do not think it is a corrupt media file issue.
Anyone have any insight as to why this is taking place?
My best guess is that it has something to do with the DVCPRO HD 720p60 codec. As a side note, I have expericensed failed renders in After Effects which used the DVCPRO HD 720p60 codec but the same project rendered fine using the Animation codec.
Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not very familiar with hd and it's export options, but since you don't seem to be changing anything during the export why are you using Compressor? Do you not have the option to "Export QT Movie" using "current settings".
Sorry if I'm misreading something or am off base with the HD export options.

  • Export to Quicktime/Movie to MPEG-4 Quality Much Worse with Snow Leopard?

I just tried exporting an HD movie from iMovie using Export to Quicktime - Movie to MPEG-4 for the first time since upgrading to Snow Leopard and besides taking forever to export, the quality at the same settings I've used before is terrible. There's terrible macroblocking even on relatively slow moving scenes. I've exported several movies using the same workflow previously to upgrading and the video was perfect.
I use mpeg-4, H.264 encoding, 4096 bit rate, 1920x1080 HD resolution, key frame every 15 frames. It's definitely a change in the encoder as just sharing to the Media Browser results in expected quality.
As a test, I tried upping the bitrate to 5120 but it didn't help with the macroblocking.
Anyone with similar problems and/or a solution?

I've actually started noticing more artifacts using the Share to Media Browser quicktime presets. The movies that are created don't seem to be as high quality as ones I've created before. It's almost like quicktime is missing keyframes or something and then artifacting. It's not consistent. I've got one mobile formatted movie where it artifacts badly in the first minute and then not at all afterwards. It's kind of frustrating.

  • "Export as Quicktime Movie" -- won't play on other computers

When I use the "Export as Quicktime Movie" option and try to play it back on a Mac without FCP installed, it is missing components and won't play back in Quicktime Player. Of course, I can export with various compressions and then it's fine, but sometimes I want that big "original" file. Any thoughts? Thanks!

You do need the codec you are exporting to installed in the other machine if you wish to play the exported file. A variety of codecs are available only with FCP installed.
A couple of possible solutions are a very high res H.264 or Download [ProRes decoder|http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleProRes_QuickTime_Decoder_1_0_forMac] to share a prores file between machines.

  • FCP export to "QuickTime Movie" distorts aspect ratio of all text, displays video correctly.

    Hi you all,
My name is Alexander, I'm from Belgium.
I'm working on Final Cut Pro 6.0.6, on a MacBook Pro with a 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, running version 10.7.2 of Mac OS X (Lion).
I'm editing a 'making of' of a Flemish feature film. I shot this 35 minute documentary short with my own Canon HDV-camcorder (XH-A1). The Final Cut Pro-project is stored on an external hard drive (1 TB LaCie Minimus).
I've been doing exports to "QuickTime Movie" for years now, without any problems, but since a week or two, FCP started messing up the titles over the video - and the titles only. Their aspect ratio is messed up once exported, but they look just fine in the FCP Timeline (in Viewer, I can verify that the aspect ratio of the titles is always "0"). I'm trying to export this to "HDV - 720p25".
Here's a comparison between the two:
As you can see: the MOV has the titles' aspect ratio all weird, the upper one partly covering the lower one. All titles and text in the docu come out like this, but the video (and audio) is exported correctly.
Any ideas on how to solve this very annoying problem?
    Many thanks!!
    Alexander

    Hi Studio X,
Thank you for your quick reply.
The producers of the film want to upload this making of-documentary on YouTube. Therefore, I need to give them a high-quality-mov with the least possible Megabites. My film has a 35 minute running time.
So I figured: Let's start with the 'smallest' high-quality FCP-export to begin with (HDV-720p25), and throw that one in Compressor, in order to end up with a 'small' but good looking H.264-MOV for YouTube.
But for some reason, those "HDV-720p25"-exports mess up the titles. And I can't figure out why.

  • File type for export as quicktime movie

I thought I read here that "Export as Quicktime Movie" produces a .mov file (although without the extension). I'm using Brightcove to host our videos, and their publishpod says it accepts .mov files, but doesn't seem to work with the file from FCE. Is it really a .mov? Or do I need to export using Quicktime Conversion (and burn up lots more time in the process?)

    Thanks...
I did search the forum and nothing addressed my specific issue. Sorry if I didn't phrase my question clearly.
Anyway, I suspect the problem is that the Brightcove software does not work well with the Apple Intermediate Codec. I had no problem with a .mov exported with H.264 compression. This adds extra time to my workflow, but I suspect it will be a necessary evil.

Try Mixing Down the audio before export.

  • Export To Quicktime Movie (Reference or Self Contained) - GENERAL ERROR

    Hi -
I recently had to re-install FCS2 due to problems with OSX.
Now, for some reason, when I want to export from FCP to get a QT reference movie, I get a general error message. All other options from FCP export seem to work, but NOT export to Quicktime Movie.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    how so?
we can all do with a dummy's cheat sheet e.g. when making a master monitor the record device, not the computer.
So come on, what'd you do?

  • Export to Quicktime Movie rerendering. Why?

    Hi
I have a DV project edited in FCP 5.11 which is all completely rendered. It's actually made up of a number of sequences joined end to end each of which is rendered before rendering the final 'top' sequence. There are some heavily rendered motion still sections in there, so I don't really want to render them again.
However when I Export to Quicktime Movie, using the current settings, ie not making a self-contained movie, it takes hours to render and looks like it is rerendering everything I painstakingly made sure was rendered to full quality already. Is there anything I can do to stop it doing this? (I am doing this to make things much easier for Compressor, rendering the whole project as a referenced movie.)
    Thanks for your attention.

Just checking that you are, in fact, leaving the menu as Current Settings... and not changing it to match the settings of your timeline...
Also, you say you are not making a self contained movie - you've left that unchecked? Are you sure you don't have any gray realtime bars over the top of your clips - resize, dissolve, etc don't require rendering until export. You need to check the Render All menu (opt-r) under Sequence has everything checked...

  • Export to Quicktime movie continued crashes. HELP

I have sequence, it renders no problem. Whenever I go to export to Quicktime movie it crashes. I have gone and deleted all files associated with it and redone the sequence from scratch, and I keep getting the same results. Crash while exporting. I am working in DV, so all I do at export is export to Quicktime movie, which means it should be exporting as a DV movie. I am not sure what is wrong please help.
As always thanks in advance for reading and replying to my Post,
    Sebastian

I did try burning the 18.05GB file on i-DVD but even with the auto compression of i-DVD it only managed to compress it down to 5.4GB - too large for my 4.7GB DVD.
The only reason I need to burn it so my friend can author it is that he's a little too fussy and wants to author it on Adobe Encore.
I managed to get a firewire drive - but the blooming PC didnt accept it as it was Mac formated!
I just exported the original file as a QT movie, reducing sound quality, frame rate etc but it still comes out at 17.5GB - still to large for i-DVD (and thats with i-DVD's compression, which comes in at approx 5GB!)
I really really blame myself for this as I never really looked into anything more than the creative aspect of FCP. But I've started now.

  • "General Error" when I export to quicktime movie .mov

I have no idea why all of a sudden FCE4 says "General Error" when I export using quicktime movie... If i use another option like mpeg4 or other it works fine. What could be a problem?
    I have lots of memory.

I made the movie self contained and it started but then stops at 10%. This isnt anything complex just a few clips edited together w/ music. I just want to upload to youtube. I have no idea what the deal is!

  • Final cut pro problem when exporting with quicktime movie

    Hello!
I must have som help beacuse my musicmovie must be finsihed untill today. I have a movie their i had used filters like colour correction and interlace. When i export with USING QUICKTIME CONVERSION and have
    keyfram 10
    bitrate 6000
    faster encode
    size 1920x1080 HD 16:9
its not a problem the movie works fine all the way.
But when i export with QUICKTIME MOVIE it dosent work. Some clips are frozen and some are beeing misscoloured. None of them have interlace. Its the same clips that dosent work everytime i had export with QM. I have tried to replace these clips but the same thing is happening. I dont understand why i cant use quicktime movie but it works with quicktime conversion.

I am also expriencing the same error. Tried every solution listed so far:
    1. Switch off background rendering. Trash render files. Don't render. Export.
    2. copying the project within Final Cut Pro into another project
    3. remove the following folder: Library > Application Support > ProApps > MIO > RADPlugins > XDCAMFormat.RADPlug
Nothing worked. I try to export to Vimeo, YouTube, and master. All error right at 9%

  • Footage is jumpy after exporting to Quicktime movie

I have final cut pro 7 and im working with to different type of footage. One is from my canon t2i and the other is sony 500v AVCHD. Everything was logged and transfered correctly as prores. Everything plays well in the sequence no jumping between between muiltcam shots. The problem comes into play when i right click on the sequence and export to Quicktime movie. I keep all of the default setting of the sequence it was created from. Again everything plays GREAT in the sequence, so i dont think i have any corrupt files. Its weird its like it jumps from 100% on a clip to 98% and then back again. It doesn't play this way thru the entire sequence. I have the new 27 IMac

Did you transcode to ProRes HQ?
If so, your system and or hard drive may not have enough juice to play it back in Quicktime without skipping.
ProRes LT is what your clips should be transcoded to.
If you have Unlimited RT activated for the sequence with dynamic settings, it may appear to play back correctly, but actually the quality and/or frame rate may be lowered slightly for realtime playback.

  • How to select slides for exporting as QuickTime movie?

Is there a way to select only a range of slides for exporting as a QuickTime movie? I can hide the slides I don't want the movie to contain, then show them after the export, but this is very tedious. Is there a function like the "print range" when printing that will let me do this easier?
(My presentation is 100+ slides, all with animations, which I want to export as a series of short movies of 3-6 slides each.)

Probably easiest to open a new Keynote and drag the thumbnail of the slides you want in the Quicktime to the new presentation.
