Very slow external sata HD (lion)

Hi everybody!
It has been a while I am using a Netstor external HD (NR710C) 4x2TB WD Caviar black, RAID 10 (4TB total space, 2.71 Available, MacOS Extended Journaled).
It is conntected with the MacPro (MacPro 4,1 - early 2009) via a Sonnet Tempo SATA E2P pci card (drivers updated)
The OS installed is Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 (11D50d) on a OCZ SSD 250GB
What happen is that randomly the access  to the external RAID HD is very slow and while finder try to open subfolder the entire system freeze for a minute or so. Soemtimes the opened folders looks empty and I have to wait a minute or so to see the content.
When I used Snow Leopard (installed on a 1TB HD) the access was always fluid and fast.
What I've done to try to solve this issue is:
Unchecked the "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible) in the Energy Saver panel.
Changed slot of the PCI card
Changed sata plug and cable
Performed all the check disk possible
It happens as well that the copy/move of big folder (up to 800GB) is not always as fas as it should be.
Also, working with Lightroom (cache is on the SSD hd) is really frustrating due the slow access to all the files.
I was used to work directly on the external sata HD but now seems like if I have to move everything back on an internal HD.
Is there any other check I can perform to address this issue?
So many thanks.
Luca

The case has an eSata port and cable.
I've run a speed test (Xbench) on a 2TB internal drive and the external RAID.
Here is the result. It seems the speed is good.. is it correct?

  • My macbook pro is very slow after installing mountain lion

my macbook pro is very slow after installing mountain lion?  Is anyone else having this issue?

If you don't use an SSD and bump your RAM up to 8 Gb's you may experience slow speeds, but I noticed slow speeds with your general configuration in SL.
one thing you should consider right now is, Spotlight is Reindexing your hard drive, that takes time and resources, (resources which you don't necessarily have to spare).
If you continue feeling like your performance is slow, you have a few options with this computer (I have the same one).
the express card slot can house a wintec SSD drive. That little door on the side of your machine is pure gold for a really quick solution for speeding up your machine. I have one in mine right now i'm using as a scratch disk for CS6 but I used to boot from it, and the speed boost was out of this world.
You could take out the internal HDD and put in a new SSD (I have a Vertex 4 from OCZ) it is completely over kill but my experience is pretty fast and I keep up with the later MBP models colleagues have.
There are some other options for you like taking out the optical drive (however I don't know if I'm supposed to talk about that here). Google Data Doubler.
You need to also set it to always use the 9600 chipset, this will increase performance a lot too. to do this go to system preferences>energy saver>Better Performance. This switches the video card to the better one and makes a world of difference.
Lastly, your RAM. after an EFI Firmware update, our computer support up to 8GBs of RAM. Do it!

My wifi is very very slow after installing mountain lion on my MacBook pro.
    What can I do?

Ha  ha, I misread that as "My wife is very slow after installing mountain lion on my Mac book pro"
BTW on my MBPro (late 2009 with max RAM) Mountain Lion runs very well with no slowing down.

  • HT1349 very slow external HDD and usb drive connected to Apple Extreme Router

    Hello
So I got a western digital USB drive (500gig) and western digital Live 2TB.
I bought a new Apple Extreme router and connected them both.
USB drive and external hdd (WD Live 2TB) very slow when connected to Apple Extreme Router, using Lion 10.7 and updated both firmware for router, western digital and Airport Utility.
Slow means, it takes half an hour to copy 200 Mb of file to the WD Live 2TB, and its connected to my router with a gigabit ethernet cable!
Is someone else having the same problem, I thought even over usb I should get around 2-5mb range.
I am using Macbook Pro and 802.11n with Lion 10.7.2
    Please Help

The USB WD 500 gig is connected to the Airport Extreme using a non-powered USB 2.0 hub, only two things a HP printer and the 500 gig is connected through it. I already formatted it to MAC OS Extended Journalled. ANd I think the speed didnt change.
For the WD 2TB Live I didnt format it to anything, started using it out of the box. I just updated its firmware. I was having the same speed even when I directly connected it to my Mac Book Pro using ethernet gigabit cable.
This WD 2TB Live doesnt have any USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connectors, just the ethernet cable. I wasnt planning to carry it around. Just wanted to use it as a good ol NAS. So then I saw the fix somewhere and connected to this drive via AFP,  afp://MyBookLive._afpovertcp._tcp.local/Public and it become suddenly very fast. Just like how it should be, I easily copied 20 gigs in around 20-25 minutes. (This was dirctly connected to my computer)
So then I thought my problem is solved and disconnected my WD Live and connected it back to the Apple Router again, and the speed became very slow again. Now both the USB 500 gig and this 2TB Live are slow.
Time machine is also very slow.
Thing is I also have a linux and windows machine(in repair, but should be up soon), Since apple is the newest computer I have, I want to make it work on this first. I dont want to use the MACosx journaled on the 2TB right now. Besides formatting the USB 500 gig to this format didnt help with my speed. So the problem can be elsewhere.
    - I will try to get a powered USB hub as woodmeister50 suggested.
    - I dont know how to connect via iCloud as cigame suggested
Please let me know if you guys have any suggestions. I have tested and returned enough routers in past few weeks. I really want it to work on this combination LionOSX + Airport Extreme + WD Live.
    Thanks

  • Very slow boot for Mt. Lion imac mid 2007. Want speedup.

Last boot from off took about 11 minutes.  Once booted imac works OK.  This slow down has been in the last month only.  How do I speed up the process?  I have tried repairing permissions, repair disk, and maintenence utility.  These test are very slow and no improvement seen.  I have 3 gb ram.
    Thanks.

  • VERY SLOW and HOT - Mountain Lion - CalendarAgent

After some days of ML installation, my iMac become extreme slow. It´s impossible to work with.
The Activity Monitor show a very high usage in CPU and RAM used by CalendarAgent. I´ve tried to delete accounts and reinstall them - without success.
After closing the process within the Activity Monitor App, it re-appears somewhen automatically.
Additional my iMac becomes very hot in comparison to Snow Leopard.
Currently, it´s impossible to work with my iMac. I just know this behavior from Windows PC´s after 2 years of usage. And this was the reason to switch to Mac.
I appreciate proposals to solve this problem and definitve a fix from Apple ASAP!!!

I advise everybody to put their hands on their iMacs. My iMac gets so hot doing only easy work like texting I can almost not touch it. In addition the fans are not running full speed, as they should with this hot temperatures. I can barely hear them, this is definitely a dangerous bug in Montain Lion.

  • Why is my MacBook Pro very slow after installing Mountain Lion 10.8.5. - Solutions?

    Hello, hello
After waiting quite a while - I paid the relatively small amount, and got myselves a new OS.
But I am very disappointed of the speed - I see that this also was a problem with OS Lion?
Please assist me. Perhaps others have this problem as well?
    Some info:
    - 2,66 GHz Intel Core i7 processor
    - 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
    Also
    - Sometimes I run the Parallels Desktop 6 and 9 software, does this affect specs of the new OS?
Hope to hear from you guys.
    Sincerely,
    Harald

With only 4GB of RAM, how much do you have devoted to the virtual machine running under Parallels? Even if it's a small amount, it's going to make page outs and swaps used very high. From my perspective, 8GB of RAM is the 'sweet spot' for running Mountain Lion.
I'm assuming that you've a 15" mid-2010 MacBook Pro? If so, you can speed things up by installing the maximum 8GB of RAM. Go RAM shopping at Crucial or OWC.
Other than upgrading your RAM, the only thing that you can do to speed up your machine is to install a SSD. You can also check the SSDs at Crucial and OWC and decide if one is right for you.

  • Safari running very slow after downloading Mountain Lion

Since downloading OS X Mountain Lion Sarfafi runs very slowly as though I have used up my data download allowance from my service provider. I have no proxies installed (not that I would know what this means) and the DNS entries are from my service provider.  Is there any way to uninstall Mountain Lion so I can have my imac back to the way it was??? I really regret downloading it. on top of that, whilst it shows I have downloaded an app (mountain lion) on the App Store icon, it doesn't come up when I click on it.

If you're using iCloud, disable all its services and test.

  • My MacBook Pro very slow after i installed Lion

i have a problem wih the server is not respoded with 502 (yahoo)

I can't really read your message very well, but I am assuming your problem is Yahoo! is not responding on OS X Lion.
This doesn't have much to do with Apple or OS X Lion, but if you think it involves OS X Lion, what worked for me is upgrading my memory from 2GB to 4GB. Also, check your hard drive space. If it is close to full, try upgrading your hard disk to a better model.
If neither of those work, you might have to do a clean reinstall of Lion. This involves cleaning out all your data and reinstalling your OS.
Cache-file cleaners like SpeedUp Mac ($29.99) can help a lot if Lion was pre-installed on your Mac, but if you installed Lion manually, they don't really do much.
Tip: NEVER try MacKeeper to make your Mac "faster": I had the misfortune of it wiping out all my data (movies, music, photos, iMovie projects, iPhoto photo books and faces, etc.)

  • Very slow external disk read/write speeds on iMac?

My late 2012 iMac has slow I/O speeds on USB3 (~90MB/sec), FW800 (~50MB/sec via Thunderbolt adapter) and Thunderbolt (~110MB/sec).  I've tested it on several drives using the BlackMagic Disk Speed Test.  I'm on Mavericks 10.9.2.
The internal disk (not SSD) is faster than all of the others at ~150MB/sec.  I don't know where to go for help with this.  Anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be?
I'm using this computer to edit HD video and these speeds are just unacceptable.  I've tried both a Sans Digital FW800 RAID array (RAID 1) and a brand new OWN Mercury Elite Pro Thunderbolt RAID 1 enclosure.
    Thanks!

Your drives shouldn't be running this slow, especially the USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt drives. Period.
You have some hardware issues going on.
Before SSDs, believe it or not,  video was edited using mostly 7200 and 10, 000 RPM hard drives.
    Usually with FireWire 400/800 drives.
I create and edit video with Final Cut Express 4 using the internal hard drive with two external FW800 drives connected and working and I am not having the issues you are having.
Although, I am, also, using an older 2009 27 inch screen iMac with 16 GBs of RAM running OS X 10.6.8 Snow Leopard.
Also, I forgot to ask, how much RAM installed in your Mac?
I suspect You have either a hardware and/or hardware/software issues.
It would help us to help you if we could have some more technical info about your iMac.

  • Is anyone else's computer running very slow after upgrading to Lion?

I just upgraded to Lion-- had no problems with speed before, now websites take forever to load-- anyone else encounter this??  Any fixes??

Check Activity Monitor and sort by %CPU to see if any processes are hogging memory.
If mds and mdshelper are hard at work, that's Spotlight indexing, and after a few hours things should speed-up.
    Also try Safari->Reset Safari

  • Preview rendering Very Slow

    Hi,
Can anyone help with Preview.app slow rendering issue for large PDF files, it is very slow after upgrading to lion. (AutoCAD drawings that are PDFed)
    Small PDF documents are fine.

Hi Guys I work with a lot of pdf files with being a student at uni and not sure these tips might help.
Try an app called skim which is free it handles pdfs nicely and looks similar to the preview app.
Also if a pdf is slow to scroll try selecting all the pages goto file print.  Then on the bottom left hand side of the print window select pdf and then save as pdf.  I have found on some pdfs (usually the ones in black and white and look like a photo copy) using the the print save as pdf option has then allowed me to view a pdf fine in the preview app without any issues.  Hope this is useful.
I suspect its to do with pixels per inch or dots per inch of the document.

  • Lion is very slow. I have problem to make copy of a file. How can I make a check  to see what is wrong?

Lion is very slow. The big problem now is when I need to make a copy of a file in an external HD. A file about 7 Gigas can take 4 hours!!!
Using Aperture I try to save a library in an external HD (another) with function "export project as a library" an takes hours for something around 1 giga.
Since I have Lion I can not use Time Machine. I have a Western Digital 2 Teras in raid 1. 1 tera for copy and 1 tera as an image. It's been impossible. I had to format the HD and when I try to start using Time machine my 600 gigas of data becomes in 7 days!!. 7 days !! for a backup. An usually after several hours (sometimes 20hrs,  sometimes 1 day and a half) the process stoped abrudtly... and that's it. star again.
How can I check or perform a exploration to see what is happening?
    thanks in advance
    RyJ

Is a Western Digital Studio Edition II 2T (in RAID 1 mirror). The HD has 2 drives 1T each an put one mirroring the second one.
HD is connected to Mac through Firewire 800.
