Very Slow H.264 Encoding in FCP 10.1.2 and Compressor 4.1 on nMP

I have a fully maxed out 12-core nMP and editing with this machine in FCP 10.1.1 has been a delight. I recently completed a 4K project from footage shot with the Sony AX-100 and then output the project from FCP X using File>Share>Master File to ProRes 422. This operation occurred in about the same length of time as the length of the project (18.5 min.). I then brought this 75 GB ProRes .mov file into Compressor 4.1, and set up Compressor to encode to an H.264 file at 70 Mb/sec. This encode to h.264 is only 1/4 complete at 48 min. and it appears that it will take Compressor about 4 hours to encode this 18 min. project to h.264. Furthermore, I noticed that with the share to a master prores file FCP X was using 50-60% of my total CPU resources while the encode to h.264 in Compressor is using barely 16% of the total CPU. Thus it appears to me that while FCP 10.1.1 is optimized for the nMP, certainly Compressor 4.1, at least for h.264 encoding, is not.
My question is basically what am I missing? Is there a better workflow than using Compressor 4.1 for high bit rate h. 264 encoding of 4K? If so, what is the best way to use my nMP to get a high bit rate h.264 4K file for sending to YouTube and other online streaming?

I am encoding only a single project from FCP X in Compressor 4.1 and using only a single instance of Compressor. I don't really see that using multiple instances of Compresor with a single job would be helpful, but perhaps I don't understand something.
The project has now been encoding for 2.5 hr and is slightly less than half complete. The CPU usage is still at 16-17%. Overall this seems like a ridiculously slow encode to h.264 from a ProRes 422 file in Compressor 4.1.
Here are some thoughts on alternatives that I may try. (1) Take the Pro Res 422 file into Adobe's Media Encoder CC and encode it to high bit rate 4K h.264. (2) Take the Pro Res 422 file into Handbrake and encode to high bitrate 4K h.264. Handbrake does seem to make far more use of the nMP's CPU's than Compressor 4.1. Don't know about Media Encoder since I have not tried any h.264 encoding in Media Encoder.
The irony is that my nMP will play then entire 18.5 minute 4K project from the timeline with virtually no dropped frames, but rendering it to h.264 at 4K and high bit rate seems to take forever.
If you have any other thoughts, I would love to hear them. Thanks so much for responding, and I would love to hear from any FCP X experts who are encoding 4K to h.264.

I have done that several times. In fact, every time I call Verizon with my phone problems, they have me do the same things repeatedly. I keep telling them I have already done them but they insist they are SURE it will work this time. It never does. After doing the factory reset and it still not working correctly, they act like they are confused, almost like I am lying. I did what you suggested above on the slim chance it would work this time but it did not. I bought two S5's that day and the other one works perfectly fine. I know I got a bad phone. Verizon just does not listen. It is a bad phone. I just want a new phone that works properly. Is that too much to ask? I bought a new phone that has been bad from day one. Recent Software Update - Recommended for FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 Users

There is a recent Software Update ("ProApps Quicktime Codecs") that is recommended for the FCP X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4. Should FCP 7/FCS 3 Users download this update as well, or avoid to prevent any conflicts?

I have one boot drive with 10.6.8 and FCS 3, and a 2nd boot drive with 10.9 and the FCP X Trial - best to avoid any problems. Everything is smooth as glass at the moment.

The following items or conditions can slow a Mac. Please see if any of them apply:
1) Are you running any anti-virus/internet security applications?
2) Are you running any "cleaning/tune-up/optimizations" applications?
3) Any peer-to-peer or torrent downloading software?
4) Any third-party disk backup software that came bundled with an external hard drive?
5) Any online backup scheme other than iCloud or DropBox (Carbonite; GoogleDrive; MS One Drive)?
6) Did your financial institution ask you to install Trusteer EndPoint Protection (also known as Trusteer Rapport)?
If you can answer "yes" to any of those questions, you have some unneeded and performance-robbing software installed.

Very slow transfer speeds with external hard drives through Firewire and US

Hi All,
My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little. Apple support suggested I post my issue here. Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!

So I rejigged my setup a tad. My RAID 0 is still FW800, the second drive is back on FW400 on the back port, and the third is USB 2.0 on the back as well.
It's interesting to note that I saw the FW800 taking a bandwidth hit if the FW400 drives was being read/written to. For example, if I was averaging 50-60MB/sec on the FW800 drives and copy something large to the FW400 drive, each drive averages out to about 30/MB second, roughly half the FW800 speed I was getting. The USB while the slowest didn't cause any slowness on the FW drives.
Here are my Xbench results. These results are from each drive being benchmarked individually with no other drives being tested at the same time.

After the Mountain Lion 10.8.2 upgrade my system is VERY slow, online connection down miserably. WHat has happened and how do I go back to 10.8.1?

Upgraded my Macbook Pro tonight to 10.8.2....horrible move, internet connection is now a slow crawl. Was very fast before upgrade. IF no known fix how do I go back to 10.8.1?

I had the same problem. My solution was to reset the SMC on my 2010 Macbook Pro and now my internet speed is back to normal.
To reset the SMC, shut down the computer completely. Then hold SHIFT+CONTROL+OPTION on the left hand side of the keyboard AND the Power key for at least 2 seconds. Release all the keys, then repower the laptop normally using the power key.

Very slow to delete, send, forward, circle just goes round and round and then finally does its task plus sometimes stalls and takes a long time to get mail.

It also comes up with an error message once in a while when I try to send something and won't send it but if I click send again then it usually goes out.

Check your firewall and make sure that Thunderbird has full access. (This computer has Norton 360, and the firewall blocked incoming connections)
How many folders are you storing offline? If you have a lot in your trash/spam/sent folders and it is storing offline, maybe that's slowing it down. It wouldn't hurt to check and see if your e-mail provider is somehow blocking Thunderbird.

Ipod Touch 5G- WiFi is very slow or won't work, even with 3 bars and stood next to the hub. Is there a problem with iOS 6.0.1? Any one know a way to fix it?

Even with 3 signal bars on a 11mb/s connection. It takes more then 3 mintues to load Google fully!
It works fine loading one page then goes back to being slow or no excitant. It seems to start working again after using speed test.
At first i thought it was the case but after removing it there was no difference
I have tried every thing i could think like:
1. Turing it off and on again
2. A complete restore and backup. (Done this about 3 times)
I'm not sure if the new iOS 6.0.1 up date has caused this as it seemed to work fine for about a week after.

I have same problem:
I saw another topic on this but it was a couple of months old. Last month I purchased a ipod touch 5g. It runs great except the speedtest tops out at about .3 mbps down and 5 mbps up. I don't understand what is going on. All my other wifi: Macs, ipod touch 4, ipad 2 & 3, etc work fine and get great speed of 9-15 mbps down and 5 mbps up. I can barely watch an Amazon video. Sometimes it goes fast but that is few and far between. I have tried resetting the network on it. I adusted my router for all the recomendations by Apple.
It was suggested to remove the security on the router just to test it. I did that but it made no difference. This happens whether I'm close (10' or less) or farther away. Is there something I'm missing or do I need to return it?
I keep seeing something about iOS 6.0.2 but my iPod Touch says I'm up to date at 6.0.1

I did the test and that's exactly the right solution. Actually if I put "128" (which is default in CS5) instead of 1024 (which is default in CS6), charging is as fast as with CS5 and in addition the temporary file is also much less fat (the same size with CS5 !)
I note that the speed problem that I mentioned is not really a problem, but only because of a difference in configuration "default" of the two versions.
Still the problem of activation or none of "Thumbnails" which creates delays (even unable to work properly) to move layers or group. Problem mentioned (and shown in video) on the link I put in my first message !

Snow Leopard - very slow restart / reboot and Boot Camp restart fail

After Snow Leopard installation on my Macbook Pro I have a very slow restart. I logged this immediately after install and waited till 10.6.1 was issued and installed but still have the same problems. Hope some one can help.
For an normal restart or reboot I have the grey screen for about 25 secs and then the blue screen hangs for about 2 mins 30 secs before loading desktop. This is longer than Leopard and clearly not what Snow Leopard is meant to be. I have installed on an iMac as well and can see the new normal fast boot.
I also have Windows on it's own partition and use in Boot Camp. I have used this successfully under Leopard.
When I restart from Windows using the Start button and restart, Windows shuts down and then the mac starts up but gets stuck indefinitely on the blue screen. I have waited up to 25 mins then forced a shut down.
However if I restart from Windows using the Boot Camp icon in the taskbar and choose the restart from MacOSX it shuts down windows and restarts the mac in record time!! about 25 secs grey screen and 25 secs blue screen. I can't get this in normal mac mode! - Bizarre.
I have run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, run Tech Tool, Onyx, reset PRAM, deleted startup items plists and removed startup items from System Preferences Account.
I have monitored the Console app for all the startup conditions noted above and will post below. In the logs of the normal mac reboot you can see something to do with Security Agent taking over 2 mins to load. Maybe that is a clue, but I don't understand these messages. Please note that the iStatsmenu app was installed after snow leopard and I had these slow startups before it's installation.
If anyone technical can understand what the **** is going on here I would really appreciate your feedback.

Thanks for your contributions. I have made little progress on this issue since posting.
Just as added info, I did a re-install of Snow leopard from install DVD and upgrade again to 10.6.1 and no change to the startup behaviours. Same pattern as before, although the first restart was fast and probably how it is meant to be, then the slow ones reappeared.
I also had a thought that somehow it may be related to the nominated startup disk. There were posts on other boards about similar issues with Leopard where the hanging start was found to be related to the computer not knowing which startup disk to use. I thought maybe as it works when using the boot camp icon from Windows but not the restart button, it may be related, but in OSX and Windows both are set to startup in OSX on HD. So no further joy.
Maybe someone else will come along who can understand the Console logs. Why does the loginwindow and Security Agent take so long?
Do you guys have any clues from your Console system logs? Does yours hang on loginwindow?
The fact that there are so few people with the same problem suggests to me that there is a third party device/preference/ hidden file somewhere that is having an effect and it's not an Apple issue.
I am getting close to wiping the hard drive and starting again....but live in hope.

Hello all, I need some help with my apple products. I spend half my day messing with the internet to try and get it going instead of sitting there with a blank look on its face. They freeze up to an extent. I generally can always close out Safari, shut off the wifi, then turn wifi on and safari will work somewhat better sometimes. Problem description:
Ever since I moved into this new house my apple computers have slowed down to granny speed and sometimes they just sit there and stare at you. I have an iMac from 2011, a mac book pro 2014, iPhone 6, iPhone 4s, and to top it off a windows computer that is used for graphic software. I have 2 TV’s that we use as well. My internet and cable are provided by ATT and at my old house it worked great, no problems. I have had ATT out twice since install in January. They have given me a new modem, and a booster to help increase the reach of the wireless internet. My internet is supposed to be 18mbs download and for the life of me can’t think of the upload speed. When testing I usually have a 10 to 11 download and a 1.80 upload speed. I have ran verify disk, fix permissions so many times and that it is ridiculous. My iMac is used in the back room which is about 30 feet from modem, that is why they gave me the booster the 2nd time out. The macbook is used just whereever. The speed of the Mac’s is slower then the Windows computer. That ain’t right. I don’t download anything, I don’t go to crazy suspect sites. I have taken the iMac to apple store and they tested it and said it was fine. I have re-installed the O.S. (Yosimiteme 10.10.3). I just want my apples to work properly again.

That thread helped for a time. But now it seems as though my computer is back to slow again. But, some of the jargon is over my head as well. Not sure I knew quoite everything they were talking about. But thanks a lot for that, it helped I probably just need to reread it and follow the instructions again. Thanks so much.

TaskQueryService Performance is very Slow

I am using TaskQueryService to query task from BPM workList app.
The performance of the app is very slow.
For retrieving 200 tasks from the WorkList App it is consuming around 5 seconds, which is very slow.
For the above i had removed payload and requesting for only basic info as shown in the code.
I am using Remote Ejb's for the invocation.
For getting the IWorkFlowContext it is taking negligible time, which includes authentication.
In the below code snippet i am invoking the querytask() multiple times so that the time used to create ITaskQueryService is negated. I am only looking at the performance after the first invocation. The subsequent invocations are better by .5 secs which is the time taken to create ITaskQueryService .

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

I would like to add:
you have incompatible software: start in SafeMode, read Woodmeister and see if it is free of issues.
Akamai is crap software needed or not, Huawei the same.
It is very possible that the keygenerator you used for generating a key for some softwares has infected your mac.
The non-regular software with the false key(s) are not compatible probably or generate malware. Luckily you can not update them automatically because the keygenerator blocked the software for contacting the developer... I propose to consider getting rid of those softwares by really good uninstalling.
You have a beautiful mac, don't degenerate it with crapped software. There are alternatives for expensive software, for example Adobe Photoshop has a free alternative (with a less beautiful interface) in GIMP. And so on.

ICal very slow feature on iPod - Why???

Been having problems with my Palm device (it's old... maybe time to update). I thought since I almost always have my ipod with me that I would sync my iCal and Address book to it. iPod won't do what the Palm will but at least have my current appointments in front of me. Address book works wonderful. It opens fast and has all the contacts I wanted in it.
iCal on the other hand is a disappointment. With or without music playing it seems to take it's old sweet time to open the calendar. Slow, very slow. It is also very slow to open a date on the calendar. And once a date is open I only get the first line or so of an appointment.
Am I doing something wrong with the iPod or is it just slow, slow, slow??? Anyone else using their ipod to keep track of their daily appointments? How is yours working???

Make sure the iPod touch is plugged directly into a USB2 port on the PC and not into a hub, monitor, or keyboard. Also, disconnect other USB devices except for the keyboard and mouse.

Using Outlook 2011 for mac and syncing blackberry very slow

I just bought 2 pcs of Mcabook pro. one for me and second for my cousin. we both have same office usage.i have installed office 2011. i use contacts / events / tasks of outlook and sync it with my blackberry curve. previously i was using Windows OS and i am so much used to it with its easy functionalities. Since last 15 days i have not done any work in my office as all time i am just involved in setting up one or another thing in my Macbook. i am really so much fed up and frustrated that i am thinking of switching back to Windows. i have some current issues like
Airport disconnects automatically anytime. after then i have to restart the system that is the only way. it shows as connected but i dont find my home network or internet. after restarting it works !!! it happens 4-5 times in a day...
Sync with blackberry is very slow. i do have Approx 2500 contacts / 300 tasks and 10-15 events. but it takes approx 10 times more time than i was doing with Windows.
in the blackberry desktop manager there is only one option of syncing i.e. Two way sync. what if i only want to transfer data from Macbook to Blackberry or from Blackberry to Macbook?
data sync is not perfect also. every time some entries goes missing.
i want to use ical for events and tasks.. but i dont find List view for events which is not convinient.
i have my e mails in Outlook 2011 for mac. what if i want to transfer my mail to mail for mac?
i will be obliged if anyone can help and show that my INR 70000.00 * 2 is not wasted... Frustrated Really...
