Very slow iMac running OS X Mavericks, etrecheck

Please help!  I went into Disk Utilities and ran the Repair Disk  and got the message "The volume MacIntosh HD appears to be O.K."   I downloaded Etrecheck and am attaching report.  I can see I need to update Flash Player, but I need other suggestions with detailed instructions, if possible.  Thanks
EtreCheck version: 1.9.12 (48)

1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • IMac is very slow after switching to OSX Mavericks

I'm still getting used to the philosophy of this site, so excuse me if I stray.  I had posted in a different thread and was asked to start a new thread.
I have a 20-inch, Early 2008 iMac and I've been upgraded to 10.9.4 for a few weeks.  I did have the fan problem, but sorted that out, forget what I did but may be able to retrace my steps.
But, the machine is so slow now - really not tolerable.  Every program I launch just takes a lot of time.  Even launching Textedit that used to just flash up is sow.  Safari is now very slow to launch.  Google, which I use all the time and was normally slow, is now excruciating.  Logging on, I have to wait a long time to even put in the PW.  Once open, most applications are tolerable.  But, like others have mentioned, the machine is just slower at everything.  I watch "Activity Monitor" to see what's using what for memory and CPU, and nothing new with that compared to 10.6.8 except it's not as good giving me the information I want in an quickly readable form.
Do I need to just go back to 10.6.8, or is this Mac's hardware is not compatible with 10.9.4?  It seemed that the upgrade was recommended for this machine.
I'd appreciate any thoughts, recommendation, suggestions. Thanks!
PS:  I was asked to send top 5 CPU and then the average User CPU....
    Firefox                    6.7%
    Activity Monitor     1.0 %
    Window Server     0.8%
    Firefox Plugin         1.1%
    kernel_task          0.4%
    User:                    4 - 11%
As you know, these constantly change, but I just jotted things down in the list above.  Nothing was taking any serious time.  Firefox will momentarily go up to 30%.  I know when Time Machine is slowing things down because I can see it backing up with the icon on the menu bar, but that's not only when it's slow.  It's just always slow starting applications or opening new windows in Firefox, opening a new window in Word or Excel.  I always have Activity Monitor open to watch for anything unusual, like if Firefox is bogging me down.
The question is should I expect this OS to be bogging this machine down, in general?  Thanks!

It would be nice to know how much RAM is installed. A report of this would help:
You should use Activity Monitor to check for:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar. Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.4 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Update (Combo).
Download and install EtreCheck 1.9.12. Run on your system and copy and post results here.

  • Very slow performance running Mavericks - need troubleshooting help

    Hello folks:
I have a MBP 2011 which was upgraded to Mavericks from Mountain Lion about 6 weeks ago. Since then I have had a major performance drop - slow machine, very slow window renderings, etc. I know a number of people have been facing these issues and have been recommended to clean up 3rd party extensions/agents. I ran Etrecheck (report below) and I need some help with fixing the failed kernel extensions and launch daemons. Thanks much!
    Pavan

Western Digital My Book 1148 3 TB    WD drives are one of the worst things that can happen to a mac. They have software on the drive and also in the firmware of the drive enclosure that is incompatible with Mavericks. The software that they also want you to install on your mac (to run the drive with the shitware on it that is incompatible with Mavericks) is also incompatible with Mavericks. The best thing to do with this drive is to open it and remove the hard drive and put it into a new (non-WD) enclosure. Then smash the WD enclosure into little bits with a sledgehammer and mail it back to WD.

    Kernel Extensions:
com.wdc.driver.USB_64HP (1.0.0 - SDK 10.6)     This would be part of the shitware that you installed from WD. I would  uninstall the WD application that installs this driver. If the driver is still there after that, I'd look for the extension in /System/Library/Extensions and delete it from there. This may have damaged your kernel, though. If your performance is not improved after removing the WD app and this extension, you should probably back up your documents, erase your HD, and do a clean reinstall of Mavericks.

    [failed] com.apple.installd.plist
      [failed] com.apple.softwareupdated.plist
[failed] com.apple.wdhelper.plist    These four are all apple software. I would try repairing your hard drive: Boot into your recovery partition (restart, hold down ⌘R until you see the Apple logo), and use Disk Utility to repair your hard drive. Repair permissions too while you're there. OS X: About OS X Recovery . Then restart, reassess your mac’s performance, and rerun Etrecheck. If that doesn’t work, I’d reinstall Mavericks over your current installation. If that doesn’t work, I’d do a clean install.

  • Can anyone help with a very slow iMac?

I'm getting increasingly frustrated by this computer, it takes an age to start up and then the processor makes it's noise for quite some time before allowing me to do anything.  Often the beachball is whirling around too.  I'm pretty useless when it comes to computers.  I ran the etrecheck software and have this info from it.  Can anyone offer any suggestions please?
    Problem description:
very slow start up and slow to respond.  Processor seems to be working a lot

You only have 2GB of RAM, which is not enough to run OS X 10.10 smoothly (it's the bare minimum requirement to run it at all). Consider buying more at http://eshop.macsales.com (there are other vendors as well). Find the correct RAM for your model by searching for your iMac's model identifier - iMac8,1. Also look at their installation videos.
You have several failed Apple launch agents, you may need to re-install OS X to fix that. Boot the computer while holding down the Command ⌘ and R keys at the same time. This will boot to the Recovery partition. Choose the reinstall OS X option.

  • Dreamweaver CC opening files very slow iMac with Fusion drive

I am working on a small website based off on Bootstrap 3. Now that I am almost done with the project opening files take a few seconds to open them (in code view). I have tried the various fixes like resolveremoteurltoipaddress=FALSE but still the files load very slow. On my Windows Machine it loads very fast and that machine is 4 years old. The iMac I am using at work is the latest version with decked out specs and only Dreamweaver CC and Edge Code have very slow opening of files. Creating new documents inside Dreamweaver CC is fast. Is there a way to make Dreamweaver open files faster? How to make it load faster, open documents faster, especially in code view. My initial thought is maybe its because I am linking to a few JS library like TypeKit and jQuery but I have not experience these problems on my Windows PC. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Looking for guidance to fix my VERY SLOW imac/osx mavericks

I installed Mavericks many months ago and was disappointed in how it just crippled my system. To date I've just muddled through.   I've tried cleaning out some programs, but I'm not sure what I should keep and what I should ditch. I'm not also sure how much space I have or need for the programs I run.  I just started using Adobe Creative Suite and those programs are very very difficult to work with - in any kind of timely manner. (which I need to do for my work) so I'm default to working on a PC (where I also have it installed)
I ran the etracheck that's been recommended in other discussions:  Below is the result.  Any  help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

You need to completely uninstall everything Sophos. It is not needed on OS X and can negatively impact proper OS X operation and performance
    http://www.sophos.com/en-us/support/knowledgebase/119182.aspx
You also need to completely unistall CleanMyMac2. Macpaw's uninstaller is garbage. Search for and Download and install an app called FindAnyFile and use this to search for a delete files with the names CleanMyMac2 and MacPaw to completely rid yourself of the piece of paid "garbageware".
    FIndAnyFile
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Apps like MacKeeper or any other maintenance apps like CleanMyMac 1 or 2, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse or anything like these apps, installed on your Mac, while they appear to be helpful, can do too good a job of data "cleanup" causing the potential to do serious data corruption or data deletion and render a perfectly running OS completely dead and useless leaving you with a frozen, non-functional Mac.
Plus, these type of apps aren't really necessary OR needed. They really aren't.
There are manual methods to clear off unnecessary data off of your Mac that are safer and you have complete control over your Mac and not just leave a piece of auto cleaning software in charge of clearing off data off of your Mac. Their potential of causing OS X issues outweighs the implied good and benefits these types of hard drive or memory "cleaning" apps are written to do.
These types of  system 'cleaning" apps are very poorly written and are really a scam to rob newbie and novice Mac users of their hard earned cash for a poorly written maintenance program that will do much more harm to a perfectly normal running OS X system than the good that the app developers purport these types of apps will do.
Plus, the software companies that write these apps make it hard to easily uninstall these apps if something DOES go wrong and these apps work in a way where you have no recovery or revert function to return your Mac back to its former, working state in the event something does go wrong.
It is best to never, EVER download and install these types of apps.
The risk to your system and important data is too great a risk!
Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie or Final Cut user, both have its own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
    http://www.omnigroup.com/more
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
    http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

Since you use Time Machine, erasing your Mac and rebuilding your work environment is likely to be the least time-consuming choice:
To erase and install Mavericks read: OS X Mavericks: Erase and reinstall OS X.
The excerpt "Before you erase, back up your essential files" is critical. To do that you can use Time Machine, or simply copy your essential software and other files to a backup device. Depending on the amount of data you have, a USB flash memory stick might be sufficient.
To migrate your essential documents subsequent to erasing and reinstalling Mavericks read: OS X: How to migrate data from another Mac using Mavericks and follow the procedure under Time Machine or other disk migration.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices. Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.

  • A slow iMac running 10.6.8 - potential hardware trouble

Two weeks ago, my computer was operating perfectly well (especially considering how I had been totally ignorant of even the most basic of maintenence procedures). I rarely have a vast number of applications running (five or six at the most - not enough to trouble 4GB of memory), the hard drive has about 400GB free out of 1TB, and I turn it off at the end of every day, so it had never really had any slow-down at all.
Then I turned it on one morning earlier this month, and it took about an hour to reach the desktop; every application I tried to run was greatly reduced in speed, and most spent several minutes showing the SBBOD or stating "Application Not Responding"  on the Dock. The iMac is currently still functioning, albeit at a much reduced rate. I've tried to repair disk permissions through the Disk Utility app, but these too have a habit of crashing; I downloaded Onyx which seemed to succeed in some basic clean-up functions, but to no avail.
I'll admit that I'm in way over my head here, so apologies if I seem ridiculously ignorant or foolish: my first thought was that it might be a virus, so I activated my long-dormant Windows partition via Boot Camp, which seemed to be affected even worse than the OS X section. I assumed that viruses only affect software, so that seemed to discount that possibility. I then ran four Apple Hardware Tests (three off the computer's own power, one off the Application Install disc), and each time the bar got to about 95% full and then froze. I left if for hours until I was convinced it had actually failed to finish the test: the mouse cursor was lagging and the screen had frozen, so I couldn't even press the "Stop Testing" button. Since it never actually finished the test, I never got an error code, which would have been useful; nevertheless, I am pretty much resolved to go to a local computer store in town and ask if he can check it over for me. If possible, however, I'd like to have at least some idea of what might be wrong, rather than just dropping the iMac on the counter and leaving him to figure it out from scratch.
Does anybody have any suggestions for what might have caused so sudden a decline? A housemate of mine said it might be something wrong with the power transformer, so that the RAM simply isn't getting the energy it needs to run properly, and he's fairly knowledgeable about computers and electronics - does that sound possible to anybody else? Are there any other steps I have missed that might help before I go and fork out some cash?
       Thanks for reading,
    Tom

Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode, do this a MINIMUM of 2X probably 3X. If you get error codes please post but if you do the next stop is the local Apple Store or AASP. If you have not backed up first BACKUP NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • VERY SLOW Mac Book Pro after Mavericks update...

I have recently updated my MacBook Pro to Mavericks and everything is slow. I use IMovie and my computer freezes. What should I do?

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help to identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the state of the system that may be pertinent.
Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: You copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is: copy, paste, paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual. If it only boots in safe mode, proceed anyway.
Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script. It does nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to be cautious about running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
The script will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but it's really a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
If you have more than one user, and the affected user is not an administrator, then please run the script twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The administrator is the user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time. If you can't log in as an administrator, just run the script as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign ($) or a percent sign (%). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). The text you pasted should vanish immediately, leaving the Terminal window empty. If that doesn't happen, press the return key.
If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter your password, the script will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important, so don't worry about it.
The script may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "[Process completed]" to appear in the Terminal window.
You can then quit Terminal. The output of the script will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. All you have to do is paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V again.
    Please note:
☞ This procedure is all copy-and-paste — type nothing in the Terminal window except your login password if and when prompted.
☞ Remember to post the output. It's already in the Clipboard when you see "[Process completed]" in the Terminal window. You don't have to copy the output; just paste into your web browser.
☞ If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.

  • VERY SLOW iMac loses memory

My co-worker has an iMac G5 iSight 2.1GHz with 1.5 GB ram. She uses all the CS2 programs, Word, Mail, Safari, etc. All went well for 6 months. Then the slow down. She gets the beach ball and has to start closing programs to use even one at a time. She has Memory Stick installed to show her memory use and it starts gonging when she saves a photoshop document or tries to open an Illustrator document. Eventually, she has to restart during the day just to start over. It seems this computer is not handling memory well and won't release memory that's not being used anymore. I thought OSX was fixing this problem.
I have a G4 MDD dual 867 with 2 GB RAM and use MUCH MORE stuff than she does. I have maybe 15 programs open at one time and I NEVER have memory issues (same OS).
We've reset PRAM and SMU. We've repaired permissions. Is this all we're left with?
    Jennifer
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Reluctantly let a PC in the house for the husband....

Does she do any maintenance on it?
I don't have those issues with my G-5 imac or my G-4 933 either but I let mine run 24/7. I generally have 8-10 applications running at once. Resetting the PRAM will have zero effect and resetting the SMU won't do any good either but it was certainly worth a try.
I would suggest she start by following the advice here:

  • IMac runs hot after Mavericks upgrade

after upgrading from Mountain Lion to Mavericks the machine (mid 2010 IMac 27 inch) runs much hotter than before. I was hoping the power management would rather be better than worse. The upper part of the enclosure get too hot to touch comfortably without excessive load e.g. just some office programs and safari running. This even now in winter time when room temps are only about 20 deg C = 70 deg F.  The fans are running higher than before.
As no topics like this are found, a general compatibility issue could most likely be excluded.
    What should be checked?

Do 2-3 SMC Resets, or it also may simply be re-indexing Spotlight. Check Spotlight to determine if that is the issue by hitting Command + Spacebar and see if it's reindexing.

  • Very slow iMac after installing internet security software

I purchased Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac and since installing it my iMac has been painfully slow, from turning on, to opening Apps or just viewing documents.
Has anyone experienced the same issue?

Antivirus software is NOT needed if the Mac you are running is only running OS X. Antivirus apps interfere with normal performance and operation of a Mac because they program too many controls into the main OS X system software impacting general performance of your Mac.
Here are some of my tidbits of advice on how to avoid viruses in the future, if you encounter a virus, again.
Some anti-virus solutions can slow down your Mac, but to be honest, the best anit-virus app is you, the user and your brain.
Don't visit questionable websites or website you are unsure about.
Don't use Torrents or engage in "Torrenting"
Don't install pirated software or software downloaded from a questionable or unknown websites or untrutsted sources.
Java is still a vulnerability concern,  if you do not need it, don't use it.
Use a browser filter and pop-up blocker
Don't open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize.
Install security updates when they become available
Educate yourself as to what threats are common and active.
In effect, use your own brain as the antivirus filter.
Follow that advise and in MOST cases, you will be fine and won't risk your Mac to potential Trojans, malware or viruses.
If you feel you need some baseline virus protection that is minimally invasive on the Mac OS X system, install
    ClamXAV

  • Query Performance - Query very slow to run

I have built a query to show payroll costings per month per employee by cost centres for the current fiscal year. The cost centres are selected with a hierarchy variable - it's quite a latrge hierarchy. The problem is the query takes ages to run - nearly ten minutes. It's built on a DSO so I cant aggregate it. Is there anything I can do to improve performance.

    Hi Joel,
    Walkthrough Checklist for Query Performance:
    1. If exclusions exist, make sure they exist in the global filter area. Try to remove exclusions by subtracting out inclusions.
    2. Use Constant Selection to ignore filters in order to move more filters to the global filter area. (Use ABAPer to test and validate that this ensures better code)
    3. Within structures, make sure the filter order exists with the highest level filter first.
    4. Check code for all exit variables used in a report.
    5. Move Time restrictions to a global filter whenever possible.
    6. Within structures, use user exit variables to calculate things like QTD, YTD. This should generate better code than using overlapping restrictions to achieve the same thing. (Use ABAPer to test and validate that this ensures better code).
    7. When queries are written on multiproviders, restrict to InfoProvider in global filter whenever possible. MultiProvider (MultiCube) queries require additional database table joins to read data compared to those queries against standard InfoCubes (InfoProviders), and you should therefore hardcode the infoprovider in the global filter whenever possible to eliminate this problem.
    8. Move all global calculated and restricted key figures to local as to analyze any filters that can be removed and moved to the global definition in a query. Then you can change the calculated key figure and go back to utilizing the global calculated key figure if desired
    9. If Alternative UOM solution is used, turn off query cache.
    10. Set read mode of query based on static or dynamic. Reading data during navigation minimizes the impact on the R/3 database and application server resources because only data that the user requires will be retrieved. For queries involving large hierarchies with many nodes, it would be wise to select Read data during navigation and when expanding the hierarchy option to avoid reading data for the hierarchy nodes that are not expanded. Reserve the Read all data mode for special queriesu2014for instance, when a majority of the users need a given query to slice and dice against all dimensions, or when the data is needed for data mining. This mode places heavy demand on database and memory resources and might impact other SAP BW processes and tasks.
    11. Turn off formatting and results rows to minimize Frontend time whenever possible.
    12. Check for nested hierarchies. Always a bad idea.
    13. If "Display as hierarchy" is being used, look for other options to remove it to increase performance.
    14. Use Constant Selection instead of SUMCT and SUMGT within formulas.
    15. Do review of order of restrictions in formulas. Do as many restrictions as you can before calculations. Try to avoid calculations before restrictions.
    16. Check Sequential vs Parallel read on Multiproviders.
    17. Turn off warning messages on queries.
    18. Check to see if performance improves by removing text display (Use ABAPer to test and validate that this ensures better code).
    19. Check to see where currency conversions are happening if they are used.
    20. Check aggregation and exception aggregation on calculated key figures. Before aggregation is generally slower and should not be used unless explicitly needed.
    21. Avoid Cell Editor use if at all possible.
    22. Make sure queries are regenerated in production using RSRT after changes to statistics, consistency changes, or aggregates.
    23. Within the free characteristics, filter on the least granular objects first and make sure those come first in the order.
    24. Leverage characteristics or navigational attributes rather than hierarchies. Using a hierarchy requires reading temporary hierarchy tables and creates additional overhead compared to characteristics and navigational attributes. Therefore, characteristics or navigational attributes result in significantly better query performance than hierarchies, especially as the size of the hierarchy (e.g., the number of nodes and levels) and the complexity of the selection criteria increase.
    25. If hierarchies are used, minimize the number of nodes to include in the query results. Including all nodes in the query results (even the ones that are not needed or blank) slows down the query processing. The u201Cnot assignedu201D nodes in the hierarchy should be filtered out, and you should use a variable to reduce the number of hierarchy nodes selected.

  • Very slow printing after upgrading to Mavericks and reinstalling HP s/w for an Officejet 8600?

Before upgrading to Mavericks, my HP 8600s (have 2) would zing at printing.  Now they are incredibly slow.  I had to do a Restore after my operating system upgrade and after that, the HP folder was not in the Applications Folder.  That caused me to reiinstall the HP s/w for the 8600  which I downloaded from the HP website taking care to download and install exactly as was prescribed for the Mavericks scenario.  I'm wondering if the problem is that I chose the bonjour versions of each printer when I reinstalled to each printer.
An idea of what I mean by slow is a one and half page letter is taking over 5 minutes to print whereas it used to print at about 30 seconds.
I need some help on this ASAP because my home-office is at a standstill.  Many thanks.
    Tulsa Lawyer

    Hi BerniePiel,
Choosing the Bonjour version means you have chosen the wireless option. Bonjour is a technology that is built into Mac OS and iOS. This technology discovers devices such as printers that are installed on the same network as a Mac or Apple mobile device. Bonjour is the default method for discovering devices on a network.
I can certainly help you with this. When you added the printer, did you add the printer with the 'AirPrint' driver or are you using the HP driver? Us the screenshot below to help you check.
If you do not see AirPrint next to your printer name as shown above, delete the printer and re-add it. When you click the plus symbol you need to choose 'add another printer or scanner', then select your printer and choose the HP driver next to 'Use'.
If the issue persists, or you were already using the HP driver, try the following steps.
    Reset Printing System
Click the Apple icon (   ), and then click  System Preferences.
In the Hardware section, click  Print & Fax/Scan. The Print & Fax/Scan  dialog box opens.
Right-click (or  Ctrl  +click) in the left panel, and then click Reset printing system…
    Click OKto confirm the reset.
Type the correct  Name and Password.
Click OK to reset the printing system. The Print & Fax dialog box shows no printer selected
Note: This will remove all printers in the print and Fax/Scan, any printer removed can be re-added later by clicking the plus (+) symbol.
    Repair Disk Permissions
On the Dock, click Applications, and then click  Utilities.
    Double-clickDisk Utility.
Highlight your hard drive/partition on the left (by default this is "Macintosh HD").
Click the Repair Disk Permissions  button at the bottom of the window.
Once the repair is complete, restart the computer.
    Restart the computer
Once these steps have been complete, re-add the printer again, and print. Please let me know if this resolves the issue. If the issue persists I will gladly follow up and continue to work with you.
Please click the Thumbs up icon below to thank me for responding.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
