Very slow internet connection on windows 7

I installed Windows 7 on my iMac in order to test a few websites on different internet browsers. and for the first week or so the internet worked fine. But then i started to notice that the internet got Very slow and i went to test the speeds and this is what i got:
Mac: 12.42mbps (good)
Windows: 0.20mbps (***?)
this is ridiculous. the internet just got slow all of a sudden. nothing has changed with my router or anything like that, i would have noticed it on my mac partition and my ipad. Please help me

Is there anyone that can help me?

  • Very Slow Internet Connection and Backups

I have had a Time Capsule for some time now (1st generation) and it has caused nothing but headaches. I have put up with it for some time but I have a very slow internet connection and cannot leave Time Machine on or it bogs down my machine, so I only backup periodically. Specifics are provided below.
I have a poor internet connection to begin with. When plugged in directly either to my modem or through Ethernet to the Time Capsule, I get download speeds of ~ 2.9 Mbits/sec download, 0.7 Mbits/sec upload. When connected over wireless, the speeds drop to about 0.6 Mbits/sec download, 0.6 Mbits/sec upload. I feel like I am working on dial-up. I have both a Mac and a PC, and speeds are the same on both, so it does not appear to be a computer issue. I have played with various settings in the Airport, including how connected (b-n or n only), DHCP settings, etc, but nothing makes a difference. Any suggestions?

Welcome to the discussion area, bigbrianb!
Have you downloaded a utility like iStumbler to get a look at the signal strength and noise on your wireless network?
iStumbler will display most of the other wireless networks around you, so you'll have an idea of the competition for unused channels. Ideally, you want your network to be on a channel that is at least 4-5 channels away from any other network to minimize the chances of wireless interference. Is that the case there?
Your signal strength should be 50% or greater and noise less than 10% for a good quality connection on your network. Is that the case there?
There are more things to test, but this will get things going.

  • Im having a very slow internet connection on my macbook pro??help pls

    hi
i bought a macbook pro back in summer 2012 and it came with mountain lion but since then Im having a very slow Internet connection. I have one router at my home. my other PC works fine with the Internet even my iphone 4s is way faster with same wifi connection. when I download a TV show on macbook from itunes its takes about 40-50 min to download fully but on my phone or PC it usually takes about 18 mins. and also when I try to watch a hd clip on youtube, I need to put on lowest quality in order to watch it without lagging or stopping midway.
does anyone else have this issue or I have to talk crap about apple product from now on???

Hold down the option key and select the Wi-Fi menu in the menu bar. What values are shown for the following?

  • Re: Very slow internet connection!

Hi, have joined the forum because there isn't aywhere giving out info and I wondered if anyone could update me
Thurs 12/7 this week I had no internet connection but I had broadband.  I contacted BT and the answer message said if there is a broadband problem they are aware of it and eta on fix was one hour - it took longer than that because the same message played much later in to the evening. I did a system restore to a date in may and temporarily access to the internet was restored for about 10 mins (suggesting a microsoft update had changed the setting somewhere)
Fri 13/7 I contacted BT in the am and a very helpful person went through some hub resets etc but it didnt resolve problem.  I said I would call back in the evening and we would go through some more fixes.  I called in the evening and we went through the resets and the netsh reset winsock command etc and the problem was not resolved.
Sat 14/7 I have restored the back again to May this year and again internet access has been restored.  Before losing it this time I looked up on the microsoft website for info about what is preventing access and is new on this update, amended the SSL and TSL settings and the internet access has remained.
Sat 14/7 with internet access restored with the new microsoft updates intact, there are problems with various website. There was an announcement this week that the east german isp that the FBI had diverted and monitored was about to be swtiched off monday 9th July.  The BBC announcement is that 500 000 websites are down as a result and a number on a different media website could be contacted about restoring their connections.  The BBC have encountered problems with their website and slowly they are resolving it and the display problems are being resolved.  All responses onthis site are slow.  Other websites not inthe UK or the USA appear to be responding at normal speed but those that are time out, slow to connect or fail to connect.  My hotmail account has been inaccessible until the last half hour andf the responses are slow so I am assuming that sites that have been "downed" are being systematically restored and the process in doing that is causing slow responses.  Does anyone have an input about this?  I am testing frequently visited sites and gradually they are connecting where before they were not and they are getting quicker
I hope you do not mind me posting this as a reply as like you, up until these national problems this week I haven't encountered the slow responses that I have experienced over the last couple of days

thank you Keith but I think I am fine.  The connection speed doesn't appear to be slow and my settings after the MS windows have been restored earlier today after much digging around their help site.  From reading the media today, a high number of websites were taken down this week as reported in the media and as each one is being brought back up their pages are beginning to display normally and the responses are getting faster.  Sites I couldn't access or were slow this morning are now responding at an acceptable speed.  some sites on my favourites fail to open but gradually they appear to be coming back on board so I may have resolved my own problem.
My bank website is not accessible at the moment and I have not been able to access it since wednesday last week.  I have yet to find out why that is but I will get to the bottom of it.  It is going to be a tick in a box that has changed in my local settings since the latest ms update this week - it's just finding it.
    thank you again Keith,

  • Time Capsule + Airport Extreme very slow internet connection

first time post here, looking for some help.
I have a small wireless network at home which runs as follows.
Modem - time capsule (acting as wireless router to macbook pro) - ethernet connection to iMac
I would like to extend the range of the wireless network as we dont get signal upstairs. To do this I have added an airport extreme to extend the signal (as someone gave me one for christmas!).
The network works fine, signal is great all over the house however internet traffic is very very slow when devices are connected to just the extreme station (ie when out of range from the time capsule).
Does anyone have any suggestions as to why my internet connection upstairs is very very slow?

Thanks for the reply. It seems to have helped a little - should I expect slower speeds from the extended network?

  • Time Capsule suddenly producing very slow internet connection

I use my TC as a router and back-up.  The internet connection is suddenly very slow and unable to load some more complex web pages.  I plugged the cable modem directly into my MacBook Pro and the connection is fine, so I do not believe it is our signal from the internet provider.  Yesterday I was unable to locate my TC back-up files on my computer, but today I could.

    thomsenbrønshøj wrote:
Same scenario. firmware 7.7.3. Drops from 8Mbit direct to 0,2Mbit through the Time Capsule (latest version 2TB).
Have a try naming the two wireless bands differently.
ie TC24ghz and TC5ghz .. then force the Sonos to use 2.4ghz and force the computer to use 5ghz.. do you get any improvement??
If not the TC could be faulty on the wan side.. to test you need to do actual file transfer tests between the client and the TC.. copy a large file to the and from the TC hard disk.. it should go at up to 50MB/s over ethernet and around 10-15MB/s over wireless.
The WAN issue with some modems is difficult to track down.. if the TC is new return it.. or still in warranty at least get apple to test it.

  • Very very slow internet connection (modem: westell 327w)

hey guys, it's been 2 weeks already and my internet speed is very very slow. i checked my speed at speedtest.net and the speed is like 76kbps. i called customer service many times already but they couldnt fix the the problem, they said they're going to send a technition in about2-3 days but as you see it's been 2 weeks. of course i restarted my modem already but the speed slows down like right after a minute. i live in new york and there's no major rain on the day my internet connection slows down. i'm really tired of calling the customer service...so please help guys. thank you

If you are not useing wireless, and have no intention of useing it, I would log into the modem and turn it off. Someone else could be connecting to you router and useing your bandwidth. But not likely that is you problem.
If you are useing wireless then you should log into your modem/router and be sure you have security enabled so nobody can get into you connection.
If Verizon promised someone would come out and fix the issue, they should have given you a service order number for the repair. I would contact them and have them review you account and ask what gives? It is possible that there is a line problem and they should be able to determine that from the central office. Call tech support and insist that the problem be solved. If it requires a technician visit, ask for the order number and date when the repair will be made. Get the repair order number and insist that it be completed.

  • Very Slow internet connection with WRT150-N Wireless Router

I have a WRT150-N wireless router hooked up downstairs to the modem and I am upstairs right now with internet that is very slow, it shows it is 18 megabytes/second and the connection says poor (i have a wireless G card in this computer).  I have another computer that is about 10 feet away from the router with a wireless N card and it says that the connection is 160 megabytes/second, but again it is running very very slow.  The third computer is back upstairs by this one and it has a Wireless N USB adapter and is running about 170 megabytes per second.  They are all about the same speed in opening websites but again are very slow to do so.  Any ideas on what is going on or how I can get it faster?

First of all, the speeds you are quoting all sound like Mbps (megabits per second) connection speeds, not data throughput speeds.  You really need to measure your actual download speed to tell what is actually going on with your system.
Use speedtest.net and test your system.  Turn off all other computers except the test computer.  Test under the following conditions:
    1)  connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  connect the same computer, by wire, directly to your router
    3)  connect the same computer wireless to your router
    4)  connect your other computers, wirelessly to the router, one at a time
Also, state the speed that you are paying your ISP for.
Report your download and upload speeds for all of the above tests.
Note that the speed that you are paying for should be about the same as your results from test 1 and 2 above.
After you have done these tests, it will be much easier to tell where the problem is.

  • Very slow internet connection / email

    Hi all,
I have read all posts but did not find my answer yet...
All was fine with my Macbook, until...well, I don't think I have changed anything. All of a sudden the internet connection went really slow, retrieving mail from the server (via Entourage) is sometimes blocking, it sometimes looks as there is mail in the pipe that can't come through.
Shouldn't be a genuine problem with the router (using wireless), as my PC is working fine and quick.
Does anyone have an idea? What a shame, I am starting to use my old PC for internet rather than the MacBook...
    Thanks very much,
    Daniela

    Should be fine, right?
    Yes indeed.
Another slowdown can be the DNS numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers:
Caches can mess up speed also, might coinsider Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
Sometimes 2 or 3 restarts will be required for full benefit... my guess is files relying upon other files relying upon other files!

  • Slow Internet connected to Windows 2003

Recently our company changed their server to a Windows 2003 server. Ever since, all the macs running os x have really slow internet access. The PC's are fast. Does anyone have any idea if there are settings on the mac that need to be changed or on the server?
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks

Hi, please can somebody help. I have a MacBook Pro and i am connecting to a windows 2003 server using microsoft remote desktop connection. I need to print on the printer connected to my mac. How do I get windows to see the printer that is connected to my Mac?
It looks like you have to have a postscript printer (i.e. a laser printer). I have been trying to solve this problem for some time with no luck so far.

  • Very slow internet connection in one room...

Using a Macbook Pro and Snow Leopard, with cable router 2 rooms away. Studio is in room off kitchen, added in 1970s (house built in 1940s) and internet connection is like molasses much of the time. Do I need a separate cable connection? New router? Additional router? Who has suggestions...

Standard Ethernet cables can be up to 100 Meters, (a bit over 100 yards), the length of an American footabll field.
This can allow you to move the Router to a better location. Ignore the yellow cable they shipped in the box and get a longer Modem-to-Router Ethernet cable It is NOT magic), Then put the wireless Router where it works best for YOU, not for them.

  • Sporadic very slow Internet connection

I've read the other posts, but I'll post my info here as well. I'm very frustrated with service. I have had Verizon DSL for 10 years now on the lower speed setting. A few months ago, I "upgraded" to faster speeds, and I have never seen so many slow downs, drops, and disconnects as I have during this time.
It makes me want to drop Verizon altogether and go with a different provider.

Also, to be clear I'm not a novice user. I've started and restarted the router, disconnected every device but one from my internal network. The problem is very sporadic and seems to happen without rhyme or reason. When this happens, the internet becomes virtually unusable. Pages load slowly, games don't connect, etc etc.
If I see any slowdown, I can do my ping test and if it is slow, I know immediately I have a problem. When my ping speeds get back to normal (< 50ms) then the network operates as it should.
Sometimes the problem lasts a minute...sometimes hours. It is never predictable.
    Thanks for listening.

Now it is the morning of the next day, and the internet is "sporadically good". I'll post my info again during a good period.

  • Very Slow Internet connection using a 2TB TC

    Hello,
Having issues connecting to the internet using a 2tb TC (802.11n).
I have 3 airport express and normally one computer macbook pro (10.8.2) or two join the network. This set up has worked fine for while, but lately the internet goes so slow, I am better off using my phone.
The ISP sent a technician to check speed, it is good up to the modem. The only way to have an ok connection is to reboot the TC and it lasts about 30 minutes to an hour.
Any ideas on how to solve this?
    Thank you very much
    FJDG

Ok, you can already see the TC is registering a problem.. double NAT which you have chosen to ignore..
But you should not ignore it.. you need to fix it.
So reset it to factory and setup again in bridge mode.. you will however still continue to create a wireless network.. it can be the same name and password as it is now.. that will keep the express working as they are.
Then I would also advise you to test the speed by ethernet direct to the TC LAN ports.. if it is slow.. then the TC has an issue.. one of which can be poor WAN connection speed to the UBee router.. I recommend you then try a few things.
Just plug the LAN ubee to the LAN TC.. in bridge this is perfectly acceptable.
Or if that fails downgrade the firmware of the TC to 7.6.1 as there is a bug with 7.6.4 that causes slow wan speeds.
Downgrade by holding down the option key when you select the version.
Tell me what speed you achieve by ethernet to the LAN port of the TC after these changes..

  • Needed: Optimization tips from a Pro for a very slow internet connection

I am on a remote base in Iraq with about 150 people sharing a satellite connection with a 2MB pipe. It is slow. There is nothing I can do about the volume of people, QoS from the provider, and there is no competition.
Given that, I would like to know what I can tune on my machine to make the most of a slow, frustrating experience.
I have noticed although I have browser caching turned on, it appears my browsers (safari, Omni, FF) don't try t take advantage of it. They still spend 10 minutes trying to get in touch with the website and start from scratch. Is there a browser that visits it's cache first and then looks for changes? Are there settings I am overlooking that can force the browser to load from cache first and then look for differences? Are there command line parameters or configuration files I can edit and modify to make a difference for the better?
I also have a buddy running linux and he installed a DNS caching mechanism that reduced his repeat lookups from 5 seconds to 0. He also installed another website data caching mechanism that truly stores the pages of websites he frequently visits. His experience was enhanced tremendously.
What do you recommend I do from the command line and within my browsers to maximize facilities like caching to make a slow situation a little better?
I apprecite your time and advice

    Hi Sahar,
    1) To post your adsl line statistics you can be connected to the home hub or router via wireless.
Below is some information on how to obtain your adsl line stats. You can also see this link here ADSL Statistics
    ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
    Then:
     1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
     2) click Settings
     3) Click Advanced Settings
     4) Click Broadband
     5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 1.3)
or http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9118 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 94.1.11)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
There are more useful links on Keith's website here: If you have an ADSL connection, please select this link
    2) To run and post the results of a BT Wholesale Speed Test it is recommended to do this with a wired ethernet connection, as a WiFi connection can be effected by other electronic devices in your property.
It is also best to have a landline phone of some sort, even if you don't use it, at is is a very handy tool to test your landline for any noise.
As any noise on your landline can dramatically reduce your broadband performance.
You can get a cheap corded landline phone from most electronic stores or online.
They are also good in emergencies when there is a power cut as a corded landline phone will still work.
    Hope that helps,
    Cheers
I'm no expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong

  • MacBook has a very slow internet connection.

I got a macbook pro two days back. It worked fine with my Beetel 450TC1 router for a night. I was able to download the OS update in half an hour. Sice then, the connection has been painfully slow- around 34 kbps. Other computers in my home network work fine. They were able to achieve a download speed of upto 2 mbps. However, when I connect my macbook to the network- either by ethernet or by wifi, they too start experiencing similar problems. I initially figured the problem must be with my Internet Service Provider, Airtel, and approached them. They gave up after changing the router a couple of times. I then tried the local istore. But the internet- wireless, worked perfectly well there. Probably because they have an airport extreme- I don't know.
Is it probably because of the OS update, which incidentally also included an airport update? I'm trying to figure this out. What do you guys suggest I try next?

    hi.
have you tried resetting the router? Usually there's a reset button at the back of the router.
    hope this helps.
