Very Slow Mac Mini / Decreasing Memory?

Hi,
Unfortunatly I'm having a problem with my Mac Mini. For an unknown reason my Mac Mini (Mac OS X 10.6, Snow Leopard) has been running extemely slow the last few days. I have reset the Mac a countless number of times now and done everything I can think of to fix the problem. I have noticed that occasionally the Mac will work fine for a few minutes, until suddenly the free space on my Macintosh HD will start to decrease. Roughly 1 or 2 GB of free space starts to disappear every few minutes. Please could someone offer me some help. I would be extremely greatful.
Thanks a lot,
Ant

Thanks for the welcome.
The only thing I am running is Finder. For the first 3-4 minutes though everything is fine, no matter what I run (e.g. Internet...). The problem only occurs when the Macintosh HD available free space starts to randomly decrease every few minutes.

  • Very slow Mac, EtreCheck result

Hi. I have run an EtreCheck scan with the result below. Please tell me why my Mac is so slow and whether we need more RAM… We did have TimeMachine working but the external drive has suddenly stopped working (neither our Mac or Macbook can see it when plugged in) so we have to buy a new one hence the problem in that section.  Thank you for you help

  • Mac Mini very slow at 4 gig memory, upgrade to 16 still slows down but takes a longer time

I bought a Mac mini a year ago. With an i7 and i terabyte and it cam with only 4 gig of ram. It worked fine for a while and i installed some apps then it started to get very slow. seeing the colorful "hourglass " turn round and round quite a few times. Then i went to the activity monitor where it told me that the memory used was about 3.89 gigs. I purchased a memory cleaner app from thr app store which helped a bit.
Today i upgraded to 16 gig memory and bang my computer ripped. The activity manager said i was using 6 gigs of ram and had 9.8 remaining.
after being on the internet for a couple of hours and using Firefox with about ten tabs open the computer started to get very slow again.
I checked the activity manager and it read 6 gigs used and the cash read a whopping 9 gigs. Did not think i would need the memory cleaner any more but after doing a clean it worked better.
Why did i get a whopping 9 gigs in the cash ? which is what it read after my computer slowed down again.

You may want to post in the Mac Mini forum, this is the iMac forum. If you would like me to I will ask the moderator to move the thread.

  • Help me diagnose my slow Mac mini

    Hi All,
I bought my wife a Mac mini (2012) and all she does on it is email, web and chat (Google Hangouts, typically). She did all of this on her old 2007 iMac, but for some reason this new Mac mini is struggling hard. She will get the spinning beach ball of death very very frequently when just switching between tabs and between her browsers. She will typically have Safari and Firefox open at the same time doing different tasks in each one, but they're usually just displaying websites.
Its her computer, she uses it all day long but it will typically only exhibit the slow behaviour when I am at work. She's not very technical and wouldn't know what to look for to see if there is a runaway process or something of that sort. Ideally, what I would like is to have some kind of program running to capture CPU, memory and disk usage and let me see which process is doing what at certain times a day. Specifically, when her CPU gets pegged and things start to freeze up I want to see some kind of log or graph showing what each process was doing at the time, how much cpu they were using, and memory/disk usage. I know Activity Monitor shows this stuff real time, but is there a way to capture that to a log so I can examine it when I am there?
She is at her wits end and its frustrating for me because she can't replicate it when I am home.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Trevor
PS: Mountain Lion, all updates. 4GB RAM, lots of disk space left.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • My Slow Mac Mini - will someone once and for all give me an answer!!

I got a 1.25 ghz Mac Mini with 512 RAM running 10.4.4 . This thing has been so slow since I pulled it out of the box. I always get the colorwheel when doing just about anything. No, I don't have a bunch of apps open, just Safari and Mail. I tried closing Dashboard, but that did not help. There is also this lag, when I mouse over my dock, it does not immediatly respond. This is no fun. Does someone have an educated answer for this problem?

    Robert,
If you restart your mini, does it act this slow from the start? Or is it when you use it for a period of time?
Also, open Finder, and click on the Applications section. Look for a program called Activity Monitor (it may be in a folder called Utilities). When that opens, there is a section called Memory (may be Memory Usage). Click on this and sort by Memory on the list. This will show programs that are using significant amounts of memory. My hunch is that a program is eating up all available memory and slowing your mini down. The most likely culprit is Safari. To quit Safari, you have to actual select from the menu, the Quit option. Just clicking on the X will not close Safari.
Post back with the answers to my first two questions. Also, post back with what you find in the Activity Monitor program. There are lots of people here that are more knowledgeable than me, so hang in there, we'll find the answer.

  • Slow mac mini

    Mac Mini G4, 1.33 GHz 512 MB OS 10.4.11
Has suddenly begun slowing down when I have been loading web
pages. This occurred a day or two after I installed Apple's Sept. 15
    Security Upgrade.
Also, I found a drop-down message in my network
preferences that said "Your network settings have
been changed by another application." This drop-down would not go
away, preventing me from accessing any of my system preferences, a
problem noted by many others in the discussions here. Based on
advice found in the discussions here, I managed to delete the drop-down message after much hair-pulling, but I am now left with a computer that has slowed
    by about 20 percent.
I have had a tech do cleaning, repairing, and troubleshooting with no appreciable improvement inweb-loading speeds. Do you have an answer for me? Are there others experiencing this slowdown after the Sept. 15 Security Upgrade?
Would uninstalling my Sept. 15 upgrade bring my system back to is
    earlier speeds? Help!

    Hi, Andy-
I will do my best to answer your questions. Thanks for you help.
Thanks for getting back to me.
The primary web page loading issue is: when I attempt to launch a page, it consistently pauses from 10-20 seconds or longer before a 3/4 partial page snaps up on the screen, then takes more time (often 15 seconds or more) to fully load. This did not occur before the Sept. 15 security update; I could navigate smoothly from web page to web page.
A tech cleaned my caches, reset Safari, ran MacHelp mate, checked preferences and permissions for corruption via Utility, ran auto-maintenance scripts and went to Activity Monitor to see if any
applications were putting an unusual CPU or memory load on the system during startups (none appeared to be, Safari's maximum load around 40-60 CPUs as it initially struggled to load a page).
The Mac Mini is less than three years old, and I don't run games or other memory-draining applications.
I hope this helps you help me.

  • Slow Mac Mini with i7 quad core (current gen.) with most current OSX vs. a PC-Winodws 8.1

My Mac Mini is somewhat slow... don’t get me wrong it’s a fast computer but I got a new work laptop i5 Dual Core Acer laptop with windows 8.1 (I know LOL)
& it is so much faster with media and browsing the web and overall boot up everything.... Now I have started to leave my Mac on all the time (sleep vs. off) and its much better but having multi-webpage’s up and YouTube it still get slow and will ever crash from time to time...
Anyone else has this issue? Know what can be done?
Maybe it’s just because the i5 on the Acer is a newer Haswell design? But the Mac is quad core…. Even my old PC desktop that I never use with an Intel Core 2 quad is so much faster even at 8 years old; boots Windows in 9 sec.
Mybe is just OSX - I'm thinking about install WIndows 8.1 on the Mac Mini.... ( anyone have this option; is it fast?)
    Thanks

Sometimes all Apps stop working or take a long time to come back.. Have to restart.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

  • HT4432 slow mac mini

    slow mini mac

You'll need to provide some more information for anyone to help you. Start with which mac mini do you have? Click the apple on the left of the menu bar, and about this mac ... what processor, memory, and operating system do you have? What size disk drive do you have and how much free space do you have? Did you buy the system with the current operating system or did you upgrade? If upgraded, when?

  • Unbelievably slow mac mini

    Hi all,
I have a 4 day old mac mini which has been running extremely slowly since purchase (much slower than my old powermac g5)
I'm getting pinwheels just using safari, delays in typing, programs opening very slowly and is just generally sluggish... it does however start up and shut down quickly. I have been in contact with apple and gone through resets and archive installs etc but still no improvement.
Are they supposed to run this slowly? I didn't play around with one in store but can only assume they should be running faster.

If it appears to be practically everything and you've already went through all the steps over the phone/online then really you've used up enough of your time and it would be best to take it in. Even if you did find a way to fix it you've gone through enough hassle that at the minimum the genius bar should take a look at it. Otherwise back to the purchase place.

  • Very slow mac after installing yosemite

I have already tried all the online tips (like turning off transparency etc) but nothing works. I have also run Etrecheck and will include the report:

I am having problems with slowness, too - ever since installing the latest Yosemite update I downloaded a few days ago.  EVERYTHING - Safari, QuickTime, MS Word for Apple, the DVD Player, everything - runs slowly and I get the "rainbow pinwheel of frustration".  It's taken me three minutes to type these few sentences.  It's really starting to frustrate me.  Here is my EtreCheck report:
    Problem description:
Since I installed the latest Yosemite update (10.10.2), EVERYTHING runs slowly.  I get the rainbow pinwheel whenever I click on anything on Safari, and have trouble typing via Safari; videos stop and start on QuickTime; MS Word for Apple runs slowly - EVERYTHING seems to be slowed down.  It took four minutes to get the above sentences typed.  Please help me escape the “rainbow pinwheel of failure”!

  • Very slow mac performance

Mac is very very slow, I upgraded the RAM to 3GB but the difference wasn't noticable. I then downloaded the iDefrag application. The iDefrag app is unable to run a full defrag because there isn't enough contiguous space available.
iDefrag support team advised my HDD is in too much of a state to perform defrag and to create a boot disc and run it from there. I am unable to create a boot disc as my mac's DVD drive no longer burns DVD/CDs.
I have cleared nearly everything off my mac except software applications and the Adobe Lightroom 2 catalog file, which is 10GB. But I don't understand what is using the majority of my HDD space.
    Any advice is most welcome.
The HDD size is - 119.69GB
    Used is 58.75GB
    Available is 60.94GB

I'd launch the Activity Monitor utility, set the list at the top to "All Processes", then click on the CPU heading until the top CPU users are at the top of the list. Continue to work until things slow down, then see what's consuming CPU time.
You should also select the "System Memory" tab near the bottom. If after you've been using your Mac for a while, the value for "Page outs" is greater than zero and increases while you work, then you could benefit from even more RAM.
I don't understand what is using the majority of my HDD space.
See this thread for advice on tracking down "missing" disk space:

Ignore the command in the second message, instead using the "du" command given in the sixth post.

  • Very loud Mac mini CPU cooler

I have the newest Mac mini (1,5 GHz) running under Tiger 10.4.5.
Sometimes even when i work in MS Office or browsing Internet (the CPU usage is very low) the CPU cooler system begin to blow very load for a few minutes.
What is the key of this event?

The mini's cooling fan is directly linked to the load the processor is under, thus the higher the load and the longer it lasts the more the fan will spin up.
Easiest way to check what's causing the fan to activate is to open Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilties). This is like the Windows Task manager in that it lists every process the system runs, and can also show overall CPU load. When the load goes high, look at the list of processes to find which one(s) show highest demand. More than likely it's something on a web page you're browsing (Flash animations for example).
If you want to keep a general eye on how hard your system is being worked, but don't want the distraction (and CPU load!) of Activity Monitor, then download a copy of MenuMeters (available at www.versiontracker.com) and install that. Once installed, find the menu meters preference pane and enable all the meters - they'll appear in the menu bar to the left of the clock and will show you network activity, memory use, paging activity, disk read/writes and CPU load. This is a useful at-a-glance tool for troubleshooting and general monitoring.

  • Extremely slow mac mini

i am using a mac mini with 2 GB of ram and 2.3 intel core i5, my os is OS X 10.7.5, recently, my computer has been extremely slow, for every click i did, it takes at least 10 seconds to respond, i could not find out why.

Back up all data immediately as your boot drive may be failing.
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator. I've tested them only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU D|I/O|find tok|n Cause: -|timed? ?o' | tail | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
