Very slow mbp9,1 with moderate disk use

My hard drive feels.. sluggish, even when there is only moderate use of it. For example, when launching virtualbox (with a windows xp guest) everything becomes unusable. It might take up to 5-6 sec to switch desktops with plenty of beach balls, but when the VM is fully booted things go back to normal.
Here is my xbench test. The hard drive is a 7200 RPM 500GB.
The test was run without any application running.. does it look slow to you?
Am I running low on memory, thus forcing the system to swap to disk?
Is it worth moving to a SSD?

You should run disk utility on your hard drive to verify/repair it, also take  a look at your disk info S.M.A.R.T status. Take a look at this link, https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3521

    Is too much of the system memory tied up? If so, what can I do to free some up?

    Lion very slow starting apps with Firewire 800 drive mounted.
    When my Firewire 800 drive is in sleep mode, when I start up an app like MS Excel or Addressbook. I get a spining wheel and a delay before the app launches. Any ideas? Never happened in 10.6.

    Long shot: What format is the drive?

  • Very slow download speeds with ATT U-Verse

    Hello,
    Experiencing very slow download speeds with Macbook Pro 2011, on Lion,  and ATT UVerse Max, which should allow for an avg. 11-12 MBPS speed. Instead, I get a fluctuating 60-370 kbps speed. I am not experiencing this problem on my Windows machines (Laptop running Windows 7 and Desktop on XP), it is only affecting the Macbook pro. I wonder if this issue is a known problem with ATT U-Verse and Macs, I spent hours yesterday with their support online and they couldn't help me, stating that from their side all settings were OK; the first representative from ATT re-booted the router remotely and that seemed to work for about 10 minutes, and then it went back to a crawling speed...
    Any suggestions welcome!
    Thanks

    Do you have QOS enabled in your router? Did you try plugging the win7 laptop directly and check the speed?

  • InDesign CC 2014 is very very slow when working with a table.

    InDesign CC 2014 is very very slow when working with a table. Every 1/2 - 1 hour it nearly falls back, impossible to work with. While this project must be finshed quite soon..
    What the hell is the matter with this Creative Cloud. I havea very fast iMac form 2014. I closed all other programmes, even cannot listen to music now. More people with this problem??
    Martien

    @Martien – How complex is your table?
    How many cells? Merged ones as well?
    Complex formatting of texts inside the cells?
    Complex formatting rules of table rows and/or columns?
    Many images inserted?
    If yes, and the table is running through many text frames of many pages, I fear, you can do nothing against slowness.
    Nothing but: Greek text, not showing the page contents in the Pages Panel, in short: anything you can do to get better performance in redrawing of the screen.
    If you have the chance to break up one big table in several parts, do that and edit its parts one after another isolated. Pehaps in different documents.
    Then merge the parts in one table, if you want to flow it from page to page.

  • M9 Very Slow Charging Even With Quick Charge 2.0 Chargers

    I have a continuing problem with very slow charging even with Quick Charge 2.0 chargers. For example last night I had the M9 plugged into a fast charger for over 12 hrs and it went from 5% battery to 87%.   I checked  the Settings - Battery usage history - and it displays "NO APPLICATIONS FOUND" - very strange...
    Something is very wrong. I have multiple 2 amp and quick chargers all with poor charging times. I have tried each of these:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HP0FOCM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1[/
    The Ampere app displays varying charger power from 15 mA to 880 mA so I don't think it is accurate.
    Testing with multiple chargers point to the problem in the M9. This is maddening. Seriously considering returning the M9.
    Any feedback?

  • Typing on the iPad 2 very slow to respond with iOS 7

    Why is typing on the iPad 2 very slow to respond with iOS 7?

    Try a Restart.
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
    Resetting your device
    Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.
     Resetting your settings
    You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.

  • Macbook pro very slow at startup, with often "repair disk" demand

    I have a mid2009 15'' macbook pro. I have an issue of it being veery slow and some times non-responsive for no reason. It also takes a considerable extended time to startup.
    I use only 35-40% of the HD, i have the least posible apps opening at startup, i keep desktop clean etc.
    Another thing that is strange is that very often when i perform VERIFY DISK, most times it sais i need to repair from partition (can happen even every day or two)
    Is my disk failing? Is there any way to test it?
    Note: My optical drive is not working any more (like the drive of every mac owner after 2-3 years ) so i cant use the Hardware Test Cd.Is there any other way?

    I am using Mac OS 10.7.5.  During the last week, it has started running very slow.  Any thoughts?

    Things You Can Do To Resolve Slow Downs
    If your computer seems to be running slower here are some things you can do:
    Start with visits to:     OS X Maintenance - MacAttorney;
                                      The X Lab: The X-FAQs;
                                      The Safe Mac » Mac Performance Guide;
                                      The Safe Mac » The myth of the dirty Mac;
                                      Mac maintenance Quick Assist.
    Boot into Safe Mode then repair your hard drive and permissions:
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions Pre-Lion
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion/Mountain Lion/Mavericks
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilites Menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD disk icon and click on the arrow button below.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. If no errors are reported, then click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Restart your computer normally and see if this has helped any. Next do some maintenance:
    For situations Disk Utility cannot handle the best third-party utility is Disk Warrior;  DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible.
    Note: Alsoft ships DW on a bootable DVD that will startup Macs running Snow Leopard or earlier. It cannot start Macs that came with Lion or later pre-installed, however, DW will work on those models.
    Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
    OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep.  Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger.  These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or later and should not be installed.
    OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive.
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Protection
    An excellent link to read is Tom Reed's Mac Malware Guide.
    Also, visit The XLab FAQs and read Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware.
    See these Apple articles:
              Mac OS X Snow Leopard and malware detection
              OS X Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              OS X Mountain Lion- Protect your Mac from malware
              About file quarantine in OS X
    If you require anti-virus protection I recommend using VirusBarrier Express 1.1.6 or Dr.Web Light both from the App Store. They're both free, and since they're from the App Store, they won't destabilize the system. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for these recommendations.)
    Troubleshooting Applications
    I recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX, Mavericks Cache Cleaner, or Cocktail that you can use for removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc. Corrupted cache, log, or temporary files can cause application or OS X crashes as well as kernel panics.
    If you have Snow Leopard or Leopard, then for similar repairs install the freeware utility Applejack.  If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line.  Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. Applejack does not work with Lion and later.
    Basic Backup
    For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
        used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
        requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
        drive being backed up.
    Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
    Referenced software can be found at MacUpdate.
    Additional Hints
    Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space.
    Add more RAM. If your computer has less than 2 GBs of RAM and you are using OS X Leopard or later, then you can do with more RAM. Snow Leopard and Lion work much better with 4 GBs of RAM than their system minimums. The more concurrent applications you tend to use the more RAM you should have.
    Always maintain at least 15 GBs or 10% of your hard drive's capacity as free space, whichever is greater. OS X is frequently accessing your hard drive, so providing adequate free space will keep things from slowing down.
    Check for applications that may be hogging the CPU:
    Pre-Mavericks
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time (>=70,) then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
    Mavericks and later
    Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the View menu.  Click on the CPU tab in the toolbar.
    Often this problem occurs because of a corrupted cache or preferences file or an attempt to write to a corrupted log file.

    Hi DaddyPaycheck, apologies for the delay replying.
    The hard drive is less than half full. A 500gb drive with 228gb remaining, plus 30 odd set aside for boot camp. So the drive size I expect is more than fine.
    For further info I have done the following -
    Re installed SL, backed up and restored files from Time Machine. Updated to 10.6.2 at moment.
    Have cleared off loads of stuff that was sitting redundant and essentially gathering dust.
    Used Clean My Mac to clear out all other types of bagged accrued over time.
    Ran disk utility from the install disc - all fine.
    Ran verify / repair permissions - all now fine.
    Verify Disk (from utilities just now) - all fine.
    Have unplugged all cables from back such as Ext HD / USB Ports / even speaker so that am starting / closing with only bone fide connections running.
    Have "ejected" boot camp hd and closed down, still the delay.
    Am at a loss to see where of what is causing this delay. I timed it again just now and at close down, I get the spinning icon for 50seconds before it finally closes, so something is going on.
    Not sure if it is connected, but at start up, with the apple logo on display, I also get the spinning icon for about 20 seconds, before launching the desktop, which itself shows no signs of any problems whatsoever.
    Just the shutting down that has me slightly concerned.

  • Parsing Very Slow on Node with 1MB of content

    Hi,
    I am processing and XML file that has one node that has a lengthy content string in it. The content string is actually HTML with the various escape sequences in place, but no additional XML nodes. So it looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <value>
    ~1MB of escaped HTML here
    </value>
    This is very slow (several minutes) parsing it into a DOM as well as just using the SAX parser. I am using JDK 1.3.1 and have tried both the 1.4.4 and 2.4 versions of Xerces. The problem does not appear to be the escape characters since we have tried changing the node content to base 64 encoding with slower results.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    MR

    Mind you, minutes for 1Mb seems extreme by any measure.
    If the document is really that simple, then you can process it directly without going through an XML parser.
    Sylvia.

  • Help : very slow connection speed with AEBS and iMac

    I connect to the internet using my newly purchased AEBS. I have a MacBook and an 24" iMac ( purchased in Nov 2007). My iMac showed very slow connecting speed of <1 MB/s download; with my MacBook placed just 1 foot from my iMac, the MacBook showed an amazing download speed of 20MB/s. If i connect the iMac to the AEBS using ethernet cable, it can get a very high speed.
    So, where is the problem??
    I am new to wireless, please help. I use iMac more than my MacBook at home.
    Actually, i did not touch the any of the advance setting of the AEBS.

    You know, I am experiencing the same problem. My wife's PC and iPhone are blazing fast, but my MacBook is accessing the internet at about dial-up speeds. Very frustrating and I haven't yet found the culprit.
    Anyone???

  • Very Slow 12" Powerbook with Airport Express - 15" PB OK

    Here's my problem; Our 12" 1.5 PB is very slow with Airport Express but It is OK when directly connected to the cable Modem via Ethernet. We also have a 15" PB 1.67 that works great with Airport Express & Ethernet. The 12" PB takes approximately 4-10 times longer to load Internet pages than the 15" PB. Here's what I've tried so far without success;
    - made sure software was up to date (10.4.8)
    - turned off the A/E security
    - different A/E channels
    - moved the A/E base station to another location
    - a differrent A/E base station
    - a Linksys WRTG54 base
    - new Airport Extreme Card in 12" PB
    - ran Apple hardware test on 12" PB - checks OK
    - re-installed fresh OS and Apps from original install disks
    - Firefox instead of Safari
    - new user account on 12" PB
    - re-installed original 512 RAM
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

    Jerry,
    You're not going crazy, by the way. I have the exact same problem with my 12' Powerbook. I even tried swapping airport cards with another Powerbook. No luck. Ethernet is ok.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • Very Slow internet connection with WRT150-N Wireless Router

    I have a WRT150-N wireless router hooked up downstairs to the modem and I am upstairs right now with internet that is very slow, it shows it is 18 megabytes/second and the connection says poor (i have a wireless G card in this computer).  I have another computer that is about 10 feet away from the router with a wireless N card and it says that the connection is 160 megabytes/second, but again it is running very very slow.  The third computer is back upstairs by this one and it has a Wireless N USB adapter and is running about 170 megabytes per second.  They are all about the same speed in opening websites but again are very slow to do so.  Any ideas on what is going on or how I can get it faster?

    First of all, the speeds you are quoting all sound like Mbps (megabits per second) connection speeds, not data throughput speeds.  You really need to measure your actual download speed to tell what is actually going on with your system.
    Use speedtest.net and test your system.  Turn off all other computers except the test computer.  Test under the following conditions:
    1)  connect one computer, by wire, directly to your modem
    2)  connect the same computer, by wire, directly to your router
    3)  connect the same computer wireless to your router
    4)  connect your other computers, wirelessly to the router, one at a time
    Also, state the speed that you are paying your ISP for.
    Report your download and upload speeds for all of the above tests.
    Note that the speed that you are paying for should be about the same as your results from test 1 and 2 above.
    After you have done these tests, it will be much easier to tell where the problem is.
