Very Slow New Mac Pro

I just got my first Mac Pro. I upgraded to Yosemite. It took nearly 5 hours to download. I thought it would have been and internet problem. But then I noticed that almost everything is slow, I am cutting the cord with PC but I expect a difference!
Opening an app takes several seconds. I have seen my friends Macs and they have almost instant opening of apps and all. It seems awfully slow to me.
Also I noticed that RAM is constantly on 3.98 or so, and many times there is only a few MB available. Who is using all the mem?
Thanks for any advice.
JC

  • Aperture very slow on mac pro 8 core

I have a very new mac pro that can't seem to run aperture at a usable speed at all. My 4 year old G5 was able to run it faster, using the same library. When I move between pictures, or even try and change rating, the whole computer comes to a halt and I can't do or click on anything. After about 10 - 30 seconds I can start working again. This is the same with just about any feature in aperture. I have checked the task list and it is empty. This is running with the library on the boot drive and on a secondary drive. The performance is the same. Any ideas??

Library size does matter, and Aperture doesn't handle big libraries well when it comes to speed. It shouldn't matter but it does.
My own library is around 65k images and growing rapidly. If I was to have all these images on one drive, or a RAID, and perform a search of an image with spotlight, I would get results in only a few seconds, with Aperture it's like pulling your hair out and is very painful to perform a search.
If I wanted to search my entire album I must be prepared to watch the spinning beach ball for quite a few minutes, and every click or keyboard type takes another few minutes. I don't know why this is, or why the finder runs rings around Aperture, even iView can perform a whole library search in a matter of seconds.
I think it is because Aperture is trying to show you all the thumbnails or present a graphical view of all the images when you choose library or all images. All I am doing is asking Aperture to consider all the data in all images before I perform my search, but Aperture wants to do everything.
I really hope that the engineers work on this issue for version 2, and also come up with a better captioning window than is currently in use. I use PhotoMechanic to caption everything before it even touched Aperture, which makes Apple's programme by post-event workflow rather than my live workflow. An IPTC window such as PhotoMechanic's would be very welcome. If anyone else agrees please add it to the feedback page.
Anyway, back to the performance. Certain operations, even with plenty of RAM and a good graphics card, can lead to almost snail like performance with large Aperture libraries. I doubt an Octo-Mac (as I like to call them), or even a 50-core Mac with 60Gb RAM and a 20GB video card would make any difference. The application needs updating in that respect.

  • Data transfer very slow on mac pro!! mac H/W unable to fit specifications.

    Hi,
I am installinginternal disks on the quad mac pro and the transfer ratet in the mac are very slow!!!
the disks are: barracuda 7200.10 disks, 500 GB. Sta II 300, max ST3500630AS firmware 3.AAE . throughput:300mb.jumpred off to get the 300.
MAC tells that the QUAD MAC Pro equipment (2x2.66ghz dualcore intel xeon) comes with a 3.Gigabit specification/ 300MB/sec. (Intel ESB2 AHCI, speed: 3.0 Gigabit. AHCI version 1.10 supported)...
And the benchmarks of the disk ST3500630AS show maximum 80MB/sec and a minimin of 37.3MB/sec, average 63.1 MB/sec. (anandtech tests).
According to seagate.com the maximum sustained data transfer rate:78MB/s
but in the mac the reallity is different: I am getting a transfer rate of 22MB/sec!!!!! . with out any application running and only making copy of the files!!!!
that means that the mac is only providing only 1/3 of the expected transfer rate for the disks..
so, is there a way that the MAC Pro gets all the normal transfer rate for those disks???
Is the Quad MAC Pro hardware unable to get the maximum throughput of the disks???
It seems that the mac is unable to get also the average transfer rate of those disks.. how to correct it???
    thanks a lot
    Alberto
ps. just for fun: I am getting a faster transfer rate from an old power pc ,and old pc, and firewire 400 and old ide disks!!! (36MB/seg!!!)

    Yup.
BThe latest Mac Pro are better, so if you have a new or 2 month old unit, Seagate should work, though I think there should be later firmware.
Some would say those drives take the cake or woRSe.
    http://www.barefeats.com/hard91.html
    SEAGATE PUZZLES
+Firmware version 3.AEE or later solves the slow sustained large block write speed issue for a single 7200.10 inside the Mac Pro.+
+The remaining performance issue is slow small random read speeds for one, two, three or four drives. No matter how many drives you configure in RAID 0 sets, the average random read speed for combined block sizes from 64K to 1024K is less than 30MB/s (based on QuickBench 3 testing).+
+Until Seagate fixes this, we can't recommend the 7200.10 series as the ideal boot drive for the Mac Pro (or Power Mac).+

  • Mountain Lion Very Slow on Mac Pro 3,1 (2008 model)

The Mac Pro 3,1 is supposed to support Mountain Lion, but when I run it, the GPU (ATI Radeon HD 2600 that came with it) makes a constant, loud fan noise as if it is working hard, and all of the graphics lag badly. I've installed all of the updates. Is there some driver problem between the Radeon HD 2600 and Mountain Lion? People on MacRumors said that it works fine on a Mac Pro 3,1 except for one guy who said it was really slow. Snow Leopard runs great on my machine.

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Fan Super Loud on Boot, OS Very Slow - 2014 Mac Pro

Hello I have a Mac Pro which I ordered last December and arrived in February. In the last week, I have been noticing most of the time when I boot it up, at the login screen my fan starts going wild and it's so slow that my mouse lags as I move it around. When I boot without any of my peripherals, this does not happen.
Attached to my mac I have:
    USB Apple Keyboard
    USB RAZR Mamba Mouse
USB AudioEngine Speakers (Added a few weeks ago)
    Thunderbolt Apple Display
HDMI to Displayport Samsung TV Display
HDMI Sony 4K TV (Added a few weeks ago)
I'm not sure what could be causing this problem. Has anyone had a similar experience with their Mac Pro's? I ran Apple Diagnostics and it said there were no problems.
Additionally, in your experiences, what is the turnaround time for a Mac Pro repair?

I would test by disconnecting one peripheral at a time.

  • New Mac Pro and 9.2 Hangs on Adjustments?? Old G5 Doesn't

    Hello
I have what should be a very fast new Mac Pro.  6 core at 3.46Ghz.  48Gb of RAM.  Solid state boot drive.  Software RAID 0 with 2 Hitachi 3TB drives, hardly anything on them yet. Nvidea Quadro 4000 CUDA card.  Everything installed and burned in for the overnight 8 hour test with the MPG workstation program at OWC.  Lion 10.7.2.
I had approximately 700 in camera photos combined still in camera between an up-to-16MP Sony NEX 5N camera and up-to-24MP pics on a Sony A77, that have already been loaded into my 6-7 year old 2.4Ghz dual core G5 with 6.5Gb RAM and much older version of iPhoto. OS 10.4.7 I believe.
Last night I loaded all those same pictures into the new machine and 9.2 version iPhoto.  And then deleted them from the cards on both cameras.  No issues. Smoking fast imports compared to the G5 which wasn't all that bad.
On the G5 with the picture adjust controls I could use the slider to go deeply into those same photos and see the effects of contrast, sharpness and all the other options.  Like butter.  Make the adjustments while in that deep if desired and then pull back to evaluate the overall picture before saving.  Or back in again if desired. No issues.
With the new rig I couldn't wait to try all of this, but once I go deep inside and start to move the adjustment slider controls the system every time starts getting hung with the spinning wheel.   Have to wait and wait for them to catch up to the curser on that adjustment.  Most of the time the system then will just get stuck and I have to force iPhoto to quit.
Please....does anyone know why all this latest powerfull hardware and software is doing that, compared to the old, much less capable G5?  I am really concerned now.  Haven't had a chance to get Photoshop and the other production premium software tested yet.
And one last question please.  Does anyone know if the "Enhance" feature in the Quick Fixes section adjusts Gamma as well?  There seems to be a lot more going on to give the photos depth (what I always really try to do)   than the sum of the small slider movements in the Adjust section.  With my old system and iPhoto version there was no "Gamma" adjust slider in iPhoto proper......but if I saved a photo first to my Desktop for instance, and then called up the adjustment features, there was a Gamma slider there.  Very handy and appreciated.
I see similar vast improvements on some photos now with the "Enhance" feature that looks like maybe Gamma has been optimized as well?  There now is no Gamma slider available even if the photo is taken to the desktop first.
    Thanks much
    Ron

    Hello Terence
Thanks for the tip to try.  Couldn't get to it until late last night.  Seems to still be the same in Library 2.
Also seems to be worse with 27" Cinema Display at full resolution.  And with several sliders on adjustment.  If I drop the resolution to 1920 x 1080 or 1600 x 900 and move smoothly about it is not as apt to hang up.  With as much horsepower as the new Mac Pro has, should resolution of monitor be an issue in these adjustments deep into the pictures?
How about the Enhance button?  Is gamma involved?  Everything I read about it on searches only talks about boosting saturation of the color and fine tuning with little other slider adjustments.  But on a picture where it has made a big difference to the good with depth and overall look, if I look at where the sliders were adjusted and then undo the enhance, and go back and manually put the sliders in the same position it doesn't look the same.
Does anyone know if gamma is being adjusted with this button?  Sure seems like it but can't find it mentioned anywhere.
    Thanks again!

  • The internet very very slow and drop in my brand new Mac pro OS X 10.8.3 any help!

I bought new Mac pro with Retina display (OS X 10.8.3) , I am suing Wifi and  the Internet very slow and drop most of the  time compare to my other Mac  OS X10.7.4! any advice. Thank you

    Pete
If multiple people are seeing the same problems after making the same changes it is hard to believe that each problem is fundamentally different. To say that a change is specific to a single configuration implies that every computer and every operating system installation are different. This is not rational. Treating each problem individually fixes one problem. Finding the root cause fixes all the problems. I am familiar with finding root cause of communication systems - in particular mission critical spacecraft command and telemetry links. That experience teaches me to break the problem into pieces. My troubleshooting indicates a very high packet loss between my computer and my wireless router. In the exact same configuration with with two other devices i see negligible packet losses. i can go outside my home network and see the same ping and traceroute evidence in comparing the devices. That rules out my ISP, my email provider and pretty much isolates the problem to the router Mac link. Is this thinking flawed? Can you suggest additional tests I can run to further isolate the dropped packet problem? Further, no hardware has changed in my configuration. The only change is the upgrade to 10.8.3.
In posting to other threads I am trying to find if there is evidence of the same problem and to determine if there is any other way to gather evidence, and perhaps suggest ideas that folks might double check their fixes. In doing so you aggregate the problem and not decimate it. The problem in this thread may not be solved if a packet loss is still present. I am seeing packet losses as high as 60%; an iPad at the same location is seeing less than 0.1%. The network connection will work with high packet losses. You know that is what TCP/IP does but why accept 20%, 10% or 5% packet loss if you know it should be much less than 1%. The problem can only be determined if it is tested.
I have created my own thread - I linked to it.
If you prefer to not allow comments on closed threads I would suggest closing the threads to editing. In the future I will link from my thread to the solved one however if my thread finds a better solution there will be no way of pointing from the closed thread to a better solution.
My apologies for attempting to perform a methodical root cause analysis.

  • RAM PREVIEW VERY SLOW (FAR FROM REAL TIME) ON NEW MAC PRO

    Good afternoon
I have the new mac pro with 8 cores, 64 Gb of Ram and dual AMD 700 graphic card, but the preview on After effects is slower than in the old mac pro (from 2010). I have set the preferences as told in your website and everything stills the same. Could you please advice? is very frustrating to see that a new machine works worse than the older one.
    thanks

  • Render times very slow on new Mac Pro and Premiere CC

    Hi there
I have a brand spanking new Mac Pro  (specs below) working off a G Studio r 24 TB array. Rendering anything in Premiere is taking an age (2 minutes timeline is taking 30 minutes). I am cutting 4k Sony F5 footage (XAVC). I have done tests with 1080 material and this doesn't make any difference.
I have spoken to Adobe support and reset permissions plus all the basic workarounds suggested: but there has been no improvement. I was due a call back but have not heard anything.
Can anyone suggest a solution - i have several important deadlines coming up, and can't really deal with the downtime.
I understand 3rd party apps take longer, but even with PP effects, rendering is taking way too long: especially with a super fast system like this.

  • New Mac Pro 6.1 slow for some tasks, any ideas?

May new Mac Pro 6.1 (6 core, 64 GB RAM, D700's) is running very slow for 2 specific tasks.
    OS X 10.9.3  PS CC 14.2.1
Open Canon 5D3 Camera Raw files takes 30 seconds.
Smart Sharpen 5D3 file takes 75 seconds.
That is WAY slower than my 6 year old Mac Pro 3.1!
Everything else runs quickly and efficiently on the 6.1, but it almost freezes during these 2 tasks.  Not good!  As a photographer who processes hundreds of 5D3 RAW files at a time this is a big problem for me.
    I found this article explaing issues with the graphics;
    http://macperformanceguide.com/blog/2014/20140308_1-Photoshop-sharpening-speed.html
However my performance is way worse than reported here.
I hope to find a solution...

    Thanks for your input Noel.
I have unchecked Use Graphics Processor and the time for opening a RAW file remains around 30 seconds and to smart sharpen is now 100 seconds (up from 75).
In the activity monitor, I get between 500 and 600% use of the processors when opening RAW and 800% during sharpening.
A few seconds after clicking open in ACR, I get a dialogue box with the blue bar almost complete for a fraction of a second, then it disappears and another box appears (half the hight of the first one) and starts with only a small part completed, then takes it 30 seconds to finish.  It's like it tried to open in a normal way and failed, then another very slow backup process took over.
In the top righ corner of the Smart Sharpen dialogue box, I tried selecting "Use Legacy", then it sharpens in about 3 seconds!
Also of note, when opening a RAW file or smart sharpening, the computer becomes very slow and unresponsive, even to get mail or surf the internet.  Even streaming radio in iTunes cuts in and out or cuts out completely.  As if the entire system is overwhelmed.  Despite having 2 or 3 cores unused and at least 40 GB of unused RAM.
Not what I was expecting from a very expensive upgrade in the hopes of cutting down the amount of computer time per image file!

  • Premiere Pro CC continuous crash and extremely slow renders on a new Mac Pro.

    Hello,
recently we changed our editing machines with the new Mac Pro with this configuration:
    - CPU 3,5 GHz 6 core Intel Xeon E5
    - 32 GB RAM
    - 2x AMD FirePro D700 6 GB
we work on a server connected to the Mac Pro in Dual Ethernet configuration.
The rendering of a sequence at 1920x1080 with 3 video tracks (video footage converted at ProRes 422 LT, a title on a linked After Effects Comp and a PSD graphic overlay of a small logo) of the length of about 3 minutes it takes about 4 hour... when it doesn't crash.
When it crash, usually when i simply scroll the timeline, i receive an error message very long (if you want I can send you a rtf file about it, it's too long to paste it here).
    These are my system information:
    - Premiere Pro CC 8.2.0 (65)
    - I've installed every updates available at this time
    - OS X Yosemite 10.10.2
Thank you very much in advance, and sorry for my bad english.

Thanks Andrea for your assistance in reporting that additional information. You have come across an intermittent bug which has been reported by other users with no reliable repro steps for us to follow in house. So it appears to be mainly system specific, but we're not even sure which sorts of systems demonstrate it yet.
One other thing to try is clearing your media cache files (from preferences > media panel). In the meantime,e the best thing to do is make sure you submit those crash logs to adobe whenever you get them. This helps us identify common thread among various users who may be experiencing the same problem. Also, if you have time, please file a bug report describing the steps that caused the issue in your case: http://adobe.ly/ReportBug
Please be as specific as possible when describing your steps. Without a repeatable case, a bug like this is very, very difficult to fix. Thanks again for your support.
To work around the sloe render for AE comp problem, please try right clicking on the comp in the timeline and then choose the "Render and Replace" command to transcode it out to a more easily handled format. This should help a lot with your performance slowness, and you will still have the ability to restore the original comp files if needed.

  • PP CC 2014 Gets Extremely slow the larger my project gets on a new Mac Pro

My editing team and I have 3 of the new mac pro 3.7 GHZ Quad Core with 12 GB Ram, OSX10.9.3. We edit a TV show and the longer the timeline gets the slower PP gets. The problem is gradual, but by the time I get a timeline that is over 10 minutes long PP becomes very slow and unresponsive. Once my show reaches the 30 minute mark it's extremely slow. The main problem is with playback. I hit play and it takes anywhere from 10 to 20 seconds or more to even start playing. I'm editing footage from a Sony FS 700 and a Sony PXW-Z100, 1080i footage with no effects. Color correction and audio mixing is painfully slow once my timeline is complete. We converted from FCP7 and never had this problem with that program on the same computers. This problem is the same on all 3 computers so this can't be an isolated issue with just one computer.

Sorry about that. You say you work in a team environment. Are you with CC for Teams or do each of you have individual licenses?
Do you work with networked drives? How does the project work if media is on local drives?
Do you have a deep organization system where the media is in a folder inside a folder, inside a folder, etc.? What happens if you simplify naming conventions and folder organization?
Do you use long names for your clips and sequences? What happens if you try shorter clips names and sequences.
Do you store the preview files and media cache database locally and on a fast drive? If not, move these files to a local drive.
Does the audio sample rate match sequence settings precisely? Mismatched settings can cause performance issues.
Do you use the Warp Stabilizer effect liberally? The project can bloat if too many Warp Stabilizer effects are added.
Is the project file migrated from an earlier version of Premiere Pro? Never update a project file to a new version of Premiere Pro. Remain on the current version until that project is complete.
If so, any or all of these items could be the root cause(s) of the problem for poor performance. Do some tests and post back about your findings.
    Thanks,
    Kevin

  • WHY AFTER EFFECTS STILLS SO SLOW IN THE NEW MAC PRO?

I have the new mac pro with this settings:
    3 GHz 8-Core Intel Xeon E5
    64 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC
    AMD FirePro D700 6144 MB
    Software OS X 10.9.2
And the AE performs slower than in my old mac pro. I have set the preferences as seen on all those tutorials on this site, I have an SSD external disc for cache files, memory and multiprocessing settings correctly...and previews are very very slow, and I can not even render a single comp without waiting 10 minutes. I am very disappointed and frustrated with this situation...
    Am I missing something?

I don't understand why it's even up to the user to figure out what settings are best.  Isn't the application in a vastly superior position to know what its resource constraints are at any given moment?  Instead I have to try rendering a couple of comps, kill the render, fix the render queue since AE STILL doesn't offer a graceful way to quit and resume renders.
I have to say that one of the attributes of AE that consistently disappoints me is multiprocessing and its accompanying memory management policies.  I regularly produce hundreds of network graphics at a go, and I can never reap any benefit from multiprocessing, because AE has to load the entire project into each core, instead of just loading the comps it needs to render at any given time.  Similarly, a project that requires 400 heavily-automated versions (a regular occurrence for some of my Latin America clients, where graphics have to be versioned for multiple feeds and languages) can simply choke AE.  If it could load this stuff into memory on-the-fly (or at least offload some of it when memory gets tight), this wouldn't be a problem, and I sincerely doubt the performance would be worse than it is now.  This is on a previous-gen Mac Pro with 48 GB RAM, so, while not strictly state-of-the-art, it's no slouch.
Heck, even opening some of these projects just to browse their contents is a painful 30-minute process, as AE apparently has to not only load everything into memory before I can even do anything, but, judging by how it hangs for many minutes at  99% on the progress bar, it also seems to be evaluating all the expressions in all the hundreds of comps (presumably so it can render the project thumbnails).  And yes, I've tried splitting the projects up, but this leads to its own complications, particularly when revisions come in a week or two later.
I don't want any of this to sound overly negative, since I know AE has a small team and this sort of stuff isn't trivial to implement.  I do appreciate this application and all it does, particularly for me creatively and professionally.  I just get a bit tired of seeing new releases come every year and this stuff seems to go unaddressed.
