Very slow personal hotspot on iPhone but Internet speed great - why??

The Internet on my iPhone 5 is fast using 3G but when I connect my laptop using USB and enable the personal hotspot, the speed is extremely slow. It wasn't always this slow. How do I fix it or what is causing it to be slow on the laptop yet fine on the phone?
Help please!

Basic troubleshooting
Confirm that your iOS device, computer, and wireless plan all meet the system requirements for Personal Hotspot.
Verify that Personal Hotspot is enabled by tapping Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Verify the Internet connection on your iOS device by tapping Safari and loading a new webpage.
If one connection type doesn't work, try another (for example, instead of connecting using Wi-Fi, try using USB or Bluetooth).
Try disabling and reenabling Personal Hotspot from Settings > Personal Hotspot or Settings > General > Cellular > Personal Hotspot.
Install the latest version of iOS. Tap Settings > General > Software Update.
Reset network settings by tapping Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
If none of the previous steps resolves your issue, restore the iPhone.
If none of these work, keep reading on the article I used -> support.apple.com/kb/ts2756

Thanks for replying. The plan you have it would be an additional charge to add the hotspot feature. It's not free with the Nationwide plan. You would need to add the feature online at www.verizonwireless.com/myverizon

  • Personal Hotspot causing Iphone to crash

    Hi Guys,
Using Iphone 4 with iOS 5.1.1 here
I've searched through the database as well as on google but couldn't find this issue anywhere else so I figured I'd post it here
There seems to be an isssue with my personal hotspot on iphone. In the past I could use either USB tethering or Wi-Fi sharing without any problem but recently I've noticed that whenever I turned on hot spot, and have other devices try to connect to it The connection would be established, but it seems like once the data starts transferring, Iphone would automatically shut itself down, or, rebooted itself rather.
The thing is I can still use USB tethering just fine. And this wi-fi hotspot crash problem never occurred to me before.
i tried restoring to factory, as well as network settings, none of which had worked.
    Anyone got any idea?

Have you pre-arranged with your mobile carrier for you to use "tethering" with your iPhone?  Many mobile carriers block such tethering until you sign up for that service and pay an exta monthly fee.
    Hope this helps

Do you have menu "personal hotspot" in iPhone 4s?because I can't find it in my iPhone 4s.i already search in setting>network, but I can't find personal hotspot.anyone help me?thanks

I believe you have to be provisioned by your carrier to use hotspot,  could be the reason you don't see it.  contact your carrier.

  • Very slow wirelesss when using iPhone 4S' personal hotspot for a MacBook Pro (MBP)...

    Hello.
Last night, I was helping a client with his old iPhone 4S' personal hotspot as shown in http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT4517 web page. It uses Verizon Wireless 3G for his 4 GB data cellular connection. We got the wireless (WPA2) connection to work fine, but it was very slow like crappy dial-up modem speeds. Is this normal? iPhone's iOS v8.1.2's top screen says 1X (is this a speed number?) and left of MBP. Updated Mac OS X 10.8.5's top screen shows an infinite(?) symbol instead of that wifi arc symbol.
    Thank you in advance.

yes, 1x is a speed indicator, and it is very slow. Even with 3g speeds, hotspot will be pretty slow, but still ok for simple surfing and emails and such, streaming not so much. For hotspot, you really kinda want to have at least 4g, preferably LTE.
About that 1x speed, you may want to see if you get that everywhere or just in that location. Ideally, in a good coverage area, you should not be getting such slow speeds. Might have something to do with the building you are in though. If you get the same outdoors, and your coverage area is good, you may want to call in and have someone troubleshoot your signal.

  • Personal Hotspot on iPhone 4s not working via USB cable

In the last couple of weeks, I have not been able to use the Personal Hotspot on my iPhone 4s via the USB/sync cable to either of two 2011 Macs, both running the latest version of Lion, with all relevant software updated, including Flashback removal & Java updates. The connection via Bluetooth & wi-fi is unaffected.
Opening the Network System Preference pane, the connection is shown as iPhone USB, but it is not connected, even with all other internet access methods either deactivated or disconnected.
This issue is related to Lion, as the G4 & G5 PPC Macs running 10.5.8 which I either use or administer are not affected by this problem. The iPhone is running on iOS 5.1 and is not jailbroken.
Is it possible that the Flashback/Java issues and Apple's interpretation of their prevention/removal has affected this aspect of internet access via Personal Hotspot?

Hey, where did that "I have this problem too" link come from?
    I have this problem too.

  • Very slow Safari after IOS8 Iphone 5S

    Hello all
I live in Iraq, so basically internet here is very slow, however after installing IOS 8, Safari now is very very slow
I tried other browsers and they were a better
any one of you guys have similar issue ?

My iPad and iMac are really screaming after the update. My iPhone 4 is running more slowly. What's odd is that even with it right next to the AEBS it's running slow. The iPhone 4 is listed as 802.11 b/g/n in Airport Utility in the Advanced/Wireless Clients window. When it was running slow, the signal level was OK (actually good-about the same level as the iMac) but the noise was high so the signal to noise ratio was only between 12 and 20 dB. Also the rate was at 5 and staying there 9 (not sure what the rate number is but it was much smaller than all the others clients).
I turned WiFi OFF on the phone then back on again. When it came back, the signal to noise ratio was better (went to about 30-40 dB, and the rate went up to 58. Then after a few minutes, the signal to noise ratio went back to about 20 and the rate number dropped to 5 again.
I'm not sure what this all telling me exactly, but I agree the iPhone seems a bit slower. It's running quite a bit below my 60 day average for download and uplaod speeds - especially a ways away from the AEBS (new 5th gen). The other devices (iMac and iPad are performing as good and even a little better than their 60 day averages.

  • USB Personal Hotspot bw iPhone 4 & SL 10.6.8 w/iTunes 10.7, 11 & 11.0.1 BROKEN!

    Dear Apple Support,
Since Updating our Snow Leopard 10.6.8-based Macbooks to "iTunes 10.7" (& subsequent releases, including iTunes 11 and iTunes 11.0.1), I experienced an issue with the USB "Personal Hotspot" feature provided by the iPhone 4 iOS 6 and 6.1.
When I connect the iPhone 4 through the USB Cable to the Apple Macbook Pro (as above specified), the USB Personal Hotspot feature is not available and our Consultants cannot get to the Internet.
By reading through an infinite amount of Apple Support Community threads regarding the issue (just search "iphone 4 usb tethering" on Google), I was able to determine that the "AppleUSBEthernetHost.kext" provided by iTunes 10.7, 11 & 11.0.1 is defective and doesn't allow the above feature to work.
By Uninstalling iTunes 11.0.1 and manually installing iTunes 10.6.3 (ie. downgrading), the iPhone 4 USB Personal Hotspot Feature is successfully restored.
Unfortunately, by so doing, the iTunes Library is Reset and iTunes 10.6.3 gives an error message at start which says:"An unknown error occurred -42408".
Could you please fix this Critical BUG ASAP?!
    Regards,
    A. Matesi.

Apparently this is happening to everyone with win 8.1.  I have a 5s and i've tried everything and i mean everything and nothing works.  Works just fine with all my win 7 machines.  You can find people asking this same question all over the place.  I have no idea if it's an apple issue or a win 8.1 issue but I sure wish those guys would talk to each other and test things out first.
Nothing works from wireless, usb, and bluetooth.

  • Issues with Personal Hotspot on iPhone 5

I have an iPhone 5 with the latest iOS update 7.0.4.
When I enable the personal hotspot on the iPhone it does not show up in available connections on my PC.
I have searched around the web and have seen many postings about this issue and have tried many of the suggestions provided by frustrated users and experts. None of these has fixed the issue.
    One suggestion:
    1. Set Airplane mode off
    2. Set WiFi to off
    3. Set Bluetooth to off
    4. go to Cellular -> Personal hotspot and if it was on turn it off for a few seconds then back on.
    5. cycle WiFi on the PC.
This worked one time and only very shortly.
Another suggestion was to change the last character of my personal hotspot password then change it right back.
    This also worked only once.
Very frustrating. I need this functionality for work and need some help getting this resolved. Also note I am on a business account.

        funnylion,
Let's look further into this! Have you tries troubleshooting the PC in effort to resolve this since the hotspot does work with your Mac? You mentioned you weren't able to connect immediately, does the device eventually connect or not at all? Try resetting network settings here http://vz.to/1eFK7ns and try pressing and holding the sleep/wake button at the top of the phone and the home button at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears. Please test and share. Thank you.
