Very Slow POP3 access in Mac Mail

Hello All,
I have found that downloading email via POP3 is extremely slow compared with IMAP for MAC Mail.
I received my new imac a few days ago and have being trying to setup my mail account with Mac Mail (I've updated the system software to the latest).
When I tried the Mac mail application with my Gmail account via POP3; it was extremely slow to download emails (10 to 20 seconds for each email to download). Plus when I sent an email to myself, checked that I had received it in the gmail web interface, and then did a 'get mail' in Mac Mail, the email didn't appear!
So I switched to IMAP and found that it downloaded much quicker (several emails a second) and I can send/receive emails with no delays.
While this problem is solved for me, my wife uses yahoo mail, which doesn't support IMAP!
Has anyone found this problem with their pop3 email accounts? I've also found that the pop3 seems to download multiple copies of the same emails.
As you can imagine: this is so frustrating, email is such a basic feature that I would have expected it to work straight out of the box. Anyway, so much for buying a new mac and expecting a smooth experience (unlike the problems I was having with windows)
Does anyone know how to fix this??
Cheers,
Don
P.S. Apologies for the rant! Besides this email issue, I am very impressed with Mac OS X

Try resetting some of the hardware involved (PRAM~NVRAM). See this Apple KB for details, etc.:

Can't hurt to try, and apparently this has helped others recently.

  • Email very slow to send from Mac Mail

    Hello,
    Wondering if anyone else has this problem. Whenever I open up Mac Mail, the first emails I try to send via the btinternet server take more than 5 minutes to go, sometimes closer to 10. It doesn't seem to be a problem with Mac Mail itself as messages sent via other servers go immediately. Once the first email eventually goes, subsequent messages send fine. I'm using POP (as I always have) with ssl, port 995. Mac is 10.6.8.
    The problem started a few weeks ago when I went abroad for work and used Mail via my hotel wireless system. Not sure if that's just a coincidence.
    Any advice most welcome!

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Ok. It may be that the Mail index files are clogged.
    You can check your current 'envelope archive' size by entering this in the Terminal (simply Copy and then Paste the lines into the Terminal window to avoid any typing errors):
    ls -lah ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index
    Then to optimise it (cleans out stuff that has been marked for deletion but not actually deleted, defragments the structure, etc):
    sqlite3 ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index vacuum;
    Then check your envelope archive size again to see the results:
    ls -lah ~/Library/Mail/Envelope\ Index
    In terms of size the decrease will not be huge, but you may well notice an increase in speed.

    iCloud's mail server settings are different from MobileMe's. Strictly speaking Lion 10.7.2 is required for iCloud, and on that Mail is set up automatically.
    Snow Leopard cannot access most of iCloud's facilities, however you can set Mail up manually to access your email. The method is described here:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudmail.html
    The situation with iCloud and Snow Leopard is described in detail here:
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/icloudSL.html
    iCloud cannot access your AOL account (the MobileMe facility for checking external POP accounts does not exist in iCloud) - you will have to do this in the Mail application in the usual way. You could of course set up forwarding from your AOL account to iCloud (assuming they provide this facility) but you will not be able to reply using iCloud's SMTP server with anything other than the iCloud address as the 'From' address.

  • It's very slow to access file server after installed SP1 of Win7.

    I found it's become very slow to access shared files on file server after installed win7 SP1, (windows6.1-KB976932-X86.exe),  access same file, the win7 without sp1 is fast in 5 secs, but the pc with sp1 need more than 30 secs. And
    I tried to removed the sp1, everything goes fine, access fast as others.
    I don't understand what's the reason and which feature affected it, I believe the sp1 can help Win7 be more safety, but why the performance on it get worse.
    And I didn't find the same question or tips on forum or website, do you really haven't the issue?

    Hello,
    You can't upgrade to any faster, & especially not to an Intel CPU needed to run Lion/10.7 for full iCloud usage.
    You can have limited use of iCloud the way it is, you can view all of iCloud in a Browser, You can use Find my Phone I hear, & you can use IMAP Mail for syncing, but no other syncing.

  • Very very slow file access iSCSI NSS on SLES11/XEN/OES11

    Hi,
    Like many Novell customers while carrying out a hardware refresh we are moving off traditional Netware 6.5 to OES11 and at the same time virtualising our environment.
    We have new Dell Poweredge 620 serves attached by 10gig iSCSI to Equalogic SAN
    Installed SLES will all patches and updates and XEN and then created OES11 SP2 virtual machines, these connect to NSS volume by iSCSI
    Migrated files from traditional netware server to new hardware and stated testing and ran into very very slow files access times
    A 3.5mb pdf file takes close to 10 minutes to open from local PC with Novell Client installed, same if no client and open via cifs. Opening same file off traditional NW6.5 server takes 3-4 seconds.
    We have had a case open with Novell for almost 2 months but they are unable to resolve.
    To test other options we installed VMWare ESXi on the internal usb flash drive and booted off that, created same OES11 VM and connected to NSS on SAN and same pdf open in seconds.
    The current stack of SLES11/XEN/OES11 is not able to be put into production
    Any ideas where the bottleneck might be? We think is in XEN.
    Thanks

    Hi,
    As also mentioned in the SUSE forums, there is the option of using the Equallogic Hit Kit. One of the tools, next to the great autoconfigure options it has, is the eqltune tool.
    Some of the stuff that I've found important:
    -gro is known read performance killer. Switch if off on the iSCSI interfaces.
    - if possible (meaning you have decent hardware), disable flowcontrol as this generally offers stability but at the cost of performance. If your hardware is decent, this form of traffic control should not be needed.
    -To have multipath work correctly over iSCSI and starting SLES 11 SP1. Make sure kernel routing and arp handling are set correctly (not directly relevant if you only have 1 10 GB link):
    net.ipv4.conf.[iSCSI interfaceX name].arp_ignore = 1
    net.ipv4.conf.[iSCSI interfaceX name].arp_announce = 2
    net.ipv4.conf.[iSCSI interfaceX name].rp_filter = 2
    Test if traffic is actively routed over both iSCSI interfaces:
    ping -I [iSCSI interfaceX name] [iSCSI Group IP EQL]
    -Make sure network buffers etc are adequately set as recommended by Dell (set in /etc/sysctl.conf):
    #NetEyes Increase network buffer sizes for iSCSI
    net.core.rmem_max = 16777216
    net.core.wmem_max = 16777216
    net.ipv4.tcp_rmem = 8192 87380 16777216
    net.ipv4.tcp_wmem = 4096 65536 16777216
    net.core.wmem_default = 262144
    net.core.rmem_default = 262144
    -Settings for the /etc/iscsi/iscsid.conf I'm using:
    node.startup = automatic # <--- review and set according to environment
    node.session.timeo.replacement_timeout = 60
    node.conn[0].timeo.login_timeout = 15
    node.conn[0].timeo.logout_timeout = 15
    node.conn[0].timeo.noop_out_interval = 5
    node.conn[0].timeo.noop_out_timeout = 5
    node.session.err_timeo.abort_timeout = 15
    node.session.err_timeo.lu_reset_timeout = 20 #Default is 30
    node.session.err_timeo.tgt_reset_timeout=20 #Default is 30
    node.session.initial_login_retry_max = 12 # Default is 4
    node.session.cmds_max = 1024 #< --- Default is 128
    node.session.queue_depth = 128 #< --- Default is 32
    node.session.iscsi.InitialR2T = No
    node.session.iscsi.ImmediateData = Yes
    node.session.iscsi.FirstBurstLength = 262144
    node.session.iscsi.MaxBurstLength = 16776192
    node.conn[0].iscsi.MaxRecvDataSegmentLength = 131072 #A lower value improves latency at the cost of higher IO throughput
    discovery.sendtargets.iscsi.MaxRecvDataSegmentLeng th = 32768
    node.session.iscsi.FastAbort = No # < --- default is Yes
    -Have Jumbo frames configured on the iSCSI interfaces & iSCSI switch.
    If you are using multipathd instead of the dm-switch provided with the Equallogic Hit kit, make sure the /etc/multipath.conf holds the optimal settings for the Equallogic arrays.
    Ever since Xen with SLES 11 SP1 we have been seeing strong performing virtual servers. We still use 1GB connections (two 1GB connections for each server, serving upto 180~190Mb/s).
    There could be a difference with the 10GB setup, where multipath is not really needed or used (depending on the scale of your setup). One important thing is that the iSCSI switches are doing their thing correctly. But seeing you've already found better results tuning network parameters on the Xen host, seems to indicate that's ok.
    Cheers,
    Willem

  • Macbook pro mid-2012 13" has very slow disk access

    Until 3 days ago my macbook pro mid-2012 13" running OX 10.8.3 was running fine. Then, it showed very slow response anytime it had to access the hard disk. After doing the usual checks and disk first aid repairs to no avail, I booted from my external disk with an older copy of my hard disk and everything then worked as normal, except when I accessed the internal hard disk, then it crawled once again (spinning beach ball, took many seconds just to open a finder window and then several minutes to display the contents). I ran the Apple Hardware Tests and it said everything was fine, even though it tooks several minutes before the test would actually start. I also ran the program BlackMagic Speed Disk to find out if the disk was having transfer speed problems and it showed a respectible transfer rate (60MB/s), not great but not like the 0.3MB/s I was getting when I tried to back up the internal disk. I was using Carbon Copy Cloner to try to back up the internal disk but had to give up since at 0.3MB/s, it would take days to back up the 250GB on the disk. I found on the web that using "restore" in Disk Utility, I could do a disk copy without the file by file copy which allowed me to back up my disk in "only" 6 hours. Booting from my newly made copy on an external disk worked fine and ran at nearly normal speed (slightly slower since it was an external disk running through USB2). As a final attempt to prove this was a disk problem, I erased the internal disk and reinstalled OSX 10.8. I am still waiting for this install to finish, it has been 5 hours although the progress bar said it should be done in 20 minutes. This was fairly convincing evidence that it is not a software or settings problem. However, all my web searches could find no other case of a problem like mine. I presume I have a failed hard disk but as all the diagnostic programs say it is working fine, I was hesitating to bring it in without hard diagnostic evidence. If anyone knows what might be the problem, it would be much appreciated to hear from you.

    It should not take 5 hours to install Mac OS X.  There is something wrong with the disk.  Try reformatting where you do a wipe of the drive (an select the option to write zeros which will remap bad sectors).   Then try to install MAc OS X.
    I got this information from here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20064489-263.html
    Back up your data.
    Use Time Machine or a system cloning utility to create a full and restorable backup of your data. If you suspect bad blocks, then when cloning you might consider not using a "block-level" copy process, since this will likely run into problems.
    Boot to the utilities DVD.
    If you have a boot DVD for a tool like Drive Genius or another drive utility, then boot to that; if not, use your OS X installation DVD (once you select your language, open Disk Utility from the Utilities menu).
    Format the drive.
    Using your selected utility, format the drive and check for bad blocks. If you are using Disk Utility, click the Erase tab, click the Options button, and then select the option to write zeros to the disk (you do not need to do multipass erase options, as this will provide no additional benefit for managing bad blocks). Writing to zeros may take a couple of hours depending on the size of the drive, but when done the drive will have remapped any blocks that were not reliably read.
    Restore the OS installation.
    If you have used Time Machine to create your backup, boot to your OS X installation DVD (if you are not using Disk Utility) and use the option in the Utilities menu to restore from backup. Attach your Time Machine drive and then proceed with the restoration, selecting the newest backup as the one to restore to your system. If you have used a system cloning tool, then attach the cloned drive and boot off of it (hold the Option key at start-up to select it from the boot menu). When you are booted to the cloned drive, run your cloning utility to copy the installation back to the computer's main boot drive.An optional approach here is to perform a full reinstallation of the OS from your installation DVD, and then migrate your data, applications, and settings from either the clone or the Time Machine backups using Apple's Migration Assistant.

  • Very slow internet access..... - interesting issue !

    I have 3 computers at home: PC XP, PC Vista and a new imac 24'' since 4 weeks....
    As side comment I'm disappointed in Apple... I expected much more… more issues than Vista seems….
    10.4.11 + Safari 3.0.4 + Firefox.
    Internet on my Mac is very slow. On the same network (wireless with WEP 128) when I enter a new page on my PC and Mac at the same time it take to the Mac approx 5 time more time to display (safari or firefox)…
    On safari I have empty the cash and “reset safari”…still the same….its dam slow for Internet access. I also removed the Wireless encryption but still the same….
    Does somebody have a clue what it could be?

    The DNS is coming from the dsl provider. Very often your router simply gets the dns automatically. With Leopard, I suspect some of the settings are such that things time out before the dns gets through. What I did was look up what the actual IP number of the dsl providers dns was. I added the IP number of the dns provider to my router. So far that seems to have solved my WiFi delays with Leopard (although that could just be a co-incidence).
    Exactly how you add the IP number to a router is router dependent. Mine is a netgear, and you do it through a web page link to the router's IP number (which will be listed in the manufacturer's handbook). Generally something like 192.168.0.1
    Hope that helps.

  • Very Slow Network access for some computers

    This has me baffled, I'll try my best to explain.
    We have an xserve g5 conected to xserve RAID, the xserve has gigabit ethernet.
    All Client computers are also on Gigabit ethernet.
    Users are all on network homes on the Server.
    Most users are getting descent speeds, transfering a file from the RAID to their (network) desktop takes around 40 seconds for a 1Gb file.
    However two users noticed transfer was much slower, 20 mins for the same file.
    I've ruled out cable problems and hardware problems because if I transfer to the local computer harddrive the speed is up to around 1 minute.
    But I've also ruled out a problem with the user account, because if the same user logs onto another mac the speeds are around 40 seconds.
    I tried logging other users into the problem macs and all users drop to 20 minutes.
    The only thing I can thing it could be is some problem with how those computers are binding with the server, I tried unbinding and resetting up directory access but that made no difference.
    What else can I try other than re-installing?

    I went ahead and did a fresh install, but this did NOT fix the problem.. I really can't think what else I can do!
    Noticed in Network utility there are a lot of received errors when copying a file.
    I replaced all the cables but again I don't think its can be a hardware problem because transfer rates are fine from local harddrive to server, but very slow between 2 network disks (unusually slow, considering all other computers are fast transfering the same file to the same place) HELP!

  • IDCS4 running very slow on a Power Mac G5 2Ghz DP

    Just completed a scratch fresh install of OSX 10.5.6 and CS4 suite. Yet I'm finding the new CS4 apps very slow. InDesign takes over 40 seconds to launch, let on a colleagues MacPro Intel 3Ghz less than 5 seconds. Does any one else run CS4 on a Power Mac G5 2Ghz DP?

    Gavin,
    Well, the 667 Mhz is the bus speed, not the processor speed (sorry abt that, turned the figures around). It is actually a 2GHz processor speed. It is my old home-Mac, was the very first Intel iMac model that was released, but soon to be exchanged for something better (just waiting for next model from Apple - I happen to like iMacs but want more RAM).
    But it is not the only one I have access to. What it produces is no worse quality wise than something produced on a more powerful Mac.
    It has no problem running CS4 Premium in any of the apps as it does have a large harddisk and 2 external ones. It is both faster and more stable than the Mac Pros and the G5s (which are in the process of beeing thrown out) in the office running Tiger and CS2-CS3. I also personally run all CS4 apps on a MacBook Alu in Leopard 10.5.6. (with extra 24" display when in the office). Runs just fine.
    With my limited RAM on the iMac I avoid switching back and forth between PS, AI and ID but it is no problem to have them all open at the same time as OSX memory management actually can take that and if you have an external drive (or two) for scratch even that works quite well. And I restrict the number of active fonts to only those I really use.
    The Leopard with CS4 combo is much faster than Tiger and CS3.
