Very slow reaction time

I bought my iMac today - an emergency. Up and running *but*... When I click on an application name I get the beach ball for several minutes (2 to 5) before the "preview" icon appears and the screen unlocks.
When the preview does appear and I double click to run the app it starts quickly (coming from a G4 iMac I appreciate this) but the precursor pause is infuriating.
Has anyone else seen this and if so is there a solution?
Any help would be appreciated.
Mike
Intel iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   2 GB RAM, Epson printer (R230) & Scanner (Perfection 4870)

I use my Finder windows in Column View and on very rare occasions have gotten a Spinning Beachball of Death when I highlight an unusual file with which my Mac seems to be having a hard time associating a primary app with which to default open the file.
If you click a Finder window, in the View menu 1. you can choose which of the 3 views all Finder windows use, & 2. for column view you can choose to eliminate the Preview column.
But you are right, you shouldn't have the issue at all. Have you checked the software companies' website to see if there are any Universal updates available for your apps? Adobe's CS 3, which is Universal, is now available. Even with 2 Gb of RAM you will need to limit the number of PPC apps you have open at the same time. Some folks have reported run away Rosetta apps that eat up the memory and they have to shut things down in the Activity Monitor. Rosetta shows up in AM as translation or something to that effect. You can highlight it, hit the Stop sign and shut down the process if it starts running away!
Have you gone to Apps/Utilities/Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions since getting the Mac set up and updating the Apple software?

I have an Iphone 4 with IOS 6 and my emails have disappeared.  I also have a very slow reaction time to my touch screen. Help!

    Hello there, parihargs1.
To troubleshoot display brightness issues the following article provides 2 key steps:
    iPhone: Hardware troubleshooting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2802
    Of note is the following:
Display has no backlight or dark screen
Toggle the ringer switch to see if the unit vibrates. If it does, it could be that iPhone is getting power, but is not displaying any image.
Try turning iPhone off and then on again.
While connected to the iPhone charger, try to reset the iPhone.
If the low-battery screen appears, charge the iPhone.
Display does not adjust brightness automatically
The ambient light sensor brightens the display when using the iPhone in brightly lit environments, and dims the display in low light. To test this sensor, do the following:
If the iPhone is in a protective case, remove it from the case. If there is a protective film on the display, remove the film.
Verify that the Auto-Brightness setting (Settings > Brightness and Wallpaper) is set to ON, and that the Brightness level is set near the middle of the slider.
Press the Home button to return to the Home screen and then press the Sleep/Wake button to lock the iPhone.
In a bright environment, cover the top third of the iPhone to block the light, then press the Sleep/Wake button or the Home button to wake the phone. Slide the slider to unlock the phone.
Notice the brightness of the screen and application icons; they should be somewhat dimmed.
Remove the cover from the top of the display and in a few moments the display should get brighter.
If these steps do not resolve your issue please refer to the "Issue not resolved" section for your next step.
Thansk for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,
    Pedro D.

  • How can I determine if my iMac is infected with Malware.  Internet is very slow at times.

Some time ago I opened a link in an email from a friend and later found out that his email address had been hijacked.  The site the link took me to seemed innocuous, but ever since it seems that from time to time that my internet connection is very slow, as if there is not enough band width.  Is it possible that my computer is infected with some sort of malware?  How can I determine that?  If it is infected how can the malware be removed?

    Here is the report.
    Problem description:
I clicked on a link in a email from a hacked email account and since then my internet connection runs very slow at times.  I am concerned that my iMac may be infected with some sort of Malware

  • SAP SNC Portal DCM screen performance is very slow and times out

    Friends,
SAP SNC Portal DCM screen performance is very slow and times out when user trying to pull data using customer location
What are the cleanup activites we can do to improve the overall SNC performance ?
We did open OSS message but so far no reply from SAP , Is there any one faced performance issue ?
User/vendor is complaining about slowness , query is standard SAP and its taking more time  .(table - /LIME/NTREE) , It looks like number of data are huge causing this problem related to LIME/NTREE table. What are the options to improve the performance ?
    Thanks in Advance
    Hanuman Choudhary

    hi Team,
Pls . note the advise from SAP below, IS there any have experiance of archiveing /LIME records ?
Please advise how to start & what the steps in archiving ?
    Thanks in advance
I had a look at the DCM query performance in PH1 system and figured out
that most of the time is spent at the LIME layer of database. The
following LIME tables are having far too many entries and is causing
the bottleneck during the query execution.
    /LIME/NLOG_QUAN - 38,165,467
    /LIME/PN_ITEM - 19,116,518
    /LIME/PN_ITEM_TB - 19,154,124
These tables are storing the historical information about LIME(stock)
updates. Since these table grow with each change/update of stock
information, it will slow down the performance of the system over a
period of time. And to avoid the slow responses, the tables should
ideally be archived on a periodic basis to keep the data volume as
minimal as possible. You may have to discuss with the Business to
determine the number of days of LIME record you would want to retain
in the system. I would strongly recommend you to consider the LIME
archival retaining the minimum days (<=60 days) of historical
information. You can find more information about the Lime Archival
    in the Sap Help link:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_scm2007/helpdata/en/44/2a83121dde23d1e10000000a1553f7/frameset.htm.
Kindly get in touch with your BASIS consultant for the LIME archival.
The application performance should definitely improve after the LIME
archival. Please do not hesitate to get in touch with me in case you
require any further clarification in this regards.
    Best Regards

  • Very Slow Build Time

    Hi All,
Just wondering if anyone had any advice on what steps I could follow to try and solve a very slow build I have for one of my DVDs I'm making. It has completed 20% and it has been running for about 28 hours.
    Here are my project details:
    - 1 best quality compressor encoded m2v video track (45min length)
    - 1 ac3 audio track
    - 6 menus with motion .motn project files as the background
    - 1 track (hosts the video and audio)
Any ideas on what I could try to solve this slow build I would be very grateful. I haven't had slow build problems with other DVDs before. It is slowly building the DVD, it hasn't crashed, and it is taking up processor power.

    Hi
6 menus with motion .motn project files as the background
These items must be taking all the encoding time. They must be rendered and MPEG2 encoded by DVDSP.
Are they very complex and long animations?
The mpeg2 and ac3 files are already encoded and DVDSP will just mux them in the final files; that don't take so long !!
    Hope that helps !

  • Very slow Charge time for xperia z2

i noticed that charging time for z2 is very slow !! anybody has the same ? any suggestions? i am using the original cable which comes out of the box .

Hi, this could be because it is a new phone/battery......if mine is sitting at say 15% it does take a good few hours to get up to 100%..... Do you leave the phone switched on during charging...if so check what apps etc are using the most power....top of the list should be your screen but look for abnormally high usage from an app etc Hope this helps

  • Bex input help (F4) very slow response times

When running queries on some of our InfoCubes or ODSs (in 3.5 of 2004s) we are getting a very slow response when using the Input Help (F4) option.  We have looked at the article the Nov/Dec 2004 BW Expert and the following SAP Notes 626887, 661251, 626887, 817335, 567746, 581802 and 748623. • IMac 5K Very slow boot time

Two days ago I got a new Retina iMac: i7, M295X, 1TB Fusion Drive. The system is fresh and my boot time is very slow. Here are boot stages:
    1. Power Button Click
    2. 40 seconds to display Apple logo screen
    3. 2 seconds to display boot status bar
    4. 7 seconds to finish booting
              = 49 sec
The problem is that I see Apple logo after 40 seconds!!! Any solutions? (I was repairing permissions, repairing HDD)

Since it's a new machine, contact Apple Service, iMac Service, or Apple's Support and let them deal with it. Do note that if you have AppleCare's protection plan and you're within 50 miles (80 KM) of an Apple repair station, you might be eligible for an onsite repair since yours is a desktop machine (depends on where you're located).  BTW, the AppleCare Protection Plan's the best warranty policy available for desktop machines. Get it if you don't have it before contacting Apple.

  • X120e - very slow boot time

I just got my Thinkpad X120e. It's the early 250GB disk 3 cell battery version, which waited for me in the US for a couple of months. I updated the drivers, BIOS and Windows to the latest versions (only driver I didn't install through Lenovo's utility was AMD's Catalyst drivers). I also upgraded memory to 6GB.
I didn't test boot time before, but now it takes 2.5 minutes just getting to the desktop and about another half a minute to be usable. That's insanely slow. Only software I installed apart from the updates is Microsoft Security Essentials and Everquest II Extended.
If anyone has an idea how to solve the problem or at least diagnose what's slowing down boot time, let me know. Thanks!

To diagnose slow boot times, there are 2 things you can do. First, you can check out the event viewer, where any processes/services/drivers that are slowing down the boot time will be flagged: http://itexpertvoice.com/home/what%E2%80%99s-taking-so-long-how-to-fight-slow-startup-times-in-windo...
The second thing is to install the Windows Performance Toolkit, and learn more than you ever wanted to know about the Win7 boot process: http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/140247-trace-windows-7-bootshutdownhibernatestandbyresume-issues/

  • Experiencing very slow response time using AirPort while wired response is fine. Suggestions?

After a surfing session a few weeks ago the response time for my AirPort internet connection became painfully slow.  When I plug in to the wired connection it works fine.  Resetting the router and modem doesn't seem to fix it.  What might have happened and what can I do to fix it?

It is very possible that you may have some form of Wi-Fi interference that appears during these hours that is preventing your AirPort Base Station from providing a clean RF signal.
I suggest you perform a simple site survey, using utilities like iStumbler, Wi-Fi Explorer or AirRadar to determine potential areas of interference, and then, try to either eliminate or significantly reduce them where possible.

  • Very slow loading time - Crystal Reports Viewer 2008

    Hi,
I search this forum to find another thread regarding this issue.  Since I've found nothing in particular, I started this one.
We are currently developping a new report engine based on the .Net Crystal Report Viewer. This engine will be used in our applications to show, print and export reports.  We based the engine on the Crystal Report 2008 version (12.0.2000).  The code is in C#, targeted on the Framework 3.5 SP1.  For the CR runtime, we tested on machines with the SP2 and SP3 versions, as well as on a computer with Crystal Report Developper installed (v12.3.0.601) with no runtimes.  Since the runtime is in x86 only, the engine is compiled in x86 (not ANY CPU)
When we try to open a report in an application, the first report loading is unusally slower than the others.  If I open a report, close it and open it a second time, the second time is much faster than the first.  While reading the threads, I realized that the first load implies some assembly loading from the Framework (which is normal).
But since i can take as long as 20-30 seconds to load the first report, I ran some test.  Using the System.AppDomain.CurrentDomain.AssemblyLoad event, I've tracked the assemblies being loaded when opening the report and the start time of the loading.  I've discovered that, while most of the CR assemblies takes less than 500 milliseconds to load, there is one that takes at least 3 seconds (20 seconds sometimes) to load : BusinessObjects.Licensing.KeyCodeDecoder.  Each time I ran the tests, it is the assembly that is the slowest (and by far) among them all.
Prior to this, we were using Delphi with the Crystal Report 10 runtime.  We never had such issues.  Now, some customers are complaining about this behavior.
For you information, we are using the ReportDocument.Load() method to load documents.  Our reports are all dynamically linked to the database with the DataSourceConnections.SetConnection() method.  The report is being loaded in the viewer using the CrystalReportViewer.ReportSource property.
Why does it takes so long to load/execute ? Is there something implied with registry keys or Internet access ?  Is there a way to speed up things ?
      Thanks !

Thanks for your help Don ! :o)
I know that the CR10 runtime was built on win32 and while I knew that the .Net version of the runtime would be slower due to the Framework and .Net architecture, we did not expect such differences between the two methods.
You are right that the hardware could play a great factor here, but since I work on this machine for a few years now and I saw the performance from the old CRPE32.dll and the new .Net counterpart, I am really surprised that there is such a difference.  Most of our customers have entry-level desktops and our application always ran well on it, until now.
So, if it is the way that the CR 2008 runtime works, do you know if your developpers optimized this part with the next version (CR 2010) or it is based on the same engine ?
Thanks again for your time !

  • IMac  with SSD and Hard drive very slow startup time

I have a new mid 2011 iMac with a 250gb SSD drive and a 2TB drive. All are from Apple as BTO options. When I first used the iMac my typical startup time from the hardware check chime to desktop was typically 12 seconds. Something, somehow has been changed because now it takes over one minute to boot up from the SSD. After the chime I hear the fans running and also the 2tb drive.  After about 20 seconds I hear the hard drive spin down and then after another 20 seconds it starts up again. Once it starts up the boot up sequences contiunes and returns to the desktop. After this the iMac perfprms as normal. I have tried running disk utility from the recovery partition. I have also reinstalled Lion as well from the recovery partition and neither of these change the outcome.
When I first got the iMac I used time machine to restore from a previous machine into the 2tb partition and then went into advanced options in System preferences>Users&Groups to point to my home folder on the 2Tb drive rather than the default one on the SSD. That was working fine until I discovered software problems with both Preview and Textedit where they would not start up with this arangement. I then repointed my home folder to the default one on the SSD which cured this issue with these programmes leaving my data remaining on the 2Tb drive. Since doing this I have had the one minute boot up problem.
Can anyone offer any advice as to how I may overcome this problem and get my iMac back to starting up in twelve seconds from the SSD as it did before.  Any help would be appreciated on this topic.
    Thanks.

Where do you maintain your Home folder - on the SSD or on the HDD?
If you want to do a clean install (from scratch) then do the following:
Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Before you go to the extreme of the above would you do this:
Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Just in case your system slowness is due to something eating up CPU time. Oh, and if your system is brand new check the upper right corner of the menubar for a "dot" inside the Spotlight glass. This means Spotlight is indexing the drive. Until it finishes your system will be quite sluggish.

  • Webutil_host very slow first time.

I use a very simple comand
    WEBUTIL_HOST.NONBLOCKING(COMANDO)
    where COMANDO is
    COMANDO := 'CMD /C "'||FILE_NAME||'"' ;
and FILE_NAME contains the name of a .xls Excell file.
It works fine but first time I execute it it takes more than 5 minutes to open the Excell file.
From the second on it appears after 20 secs.
I tried to open Excel by hands before I execute the command but nothing changed.
How can I solve that issue ?
    Tks
    Tullio

Can you explain what you mean by this statement:
I tried to open Excel by hands before I execute the command but nothing changedWhat do you mean by hand? Do you mean you try opening the file using excel application on client machine? If so, how fast did it load first time on client machine?
