Very slow start up and very slow response
Hi guys,
SOS
My iMac is so slow to boot or start up. It takes about an 1-2 hours. It has very slow and very delayed response when doing tasks. I'm not sure what happened.
I have tried safe mode but it has not worked. I tried the disk utility but it was saying that my DVD (possibly because it is for snow leopard) is outdated. I think I updated to Lion.
Do you have any suggestions? I will try any other tricks. Do you recommend to back up before doing repair etc.?
thanks in advance!!
Tried to reset the RAM but did not get through. It went to disk utility again. Tried repair but it still saying to back up and restore files. Maybe the HD has been toasted. =(...
It says: Invalid key lenght. Volume Mac HD could not be verifried completely.. then it says Error: disk utilityu can't repair close back disk out, restoere etc..
In disk utillity as well, Mac OS X base system appeared- I dont know the purpose of this. It has some files on it. Dont know whether to restore it or what?..Mac HD seems like the it's empty..
Thanks again guys...It feels like I'm in a maze..

Slow start up and printer connection
Hi, I have a iMac 10.6.8 which froze up a few weeks ago, so I had to turn the whole thing off without shutting down. Ever since that happened, it is really slow starting up and really slow sending information to the printer. It is connected with the normal printer cable and has always been very quick before the computer froze up. Now it takes 2-3 minutes of the rainbow spinning circle to get anything to print, even just a simple word document! Any clues on what may have happened and how to fix it?
Thanks.First backup immediately, it is possible you have a damaged or failing HD. Run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode and if it reports errors either Google them or post them. If the disk suffered some minor damaged it may be able to be repaired using Disk Utility however you will need to run DU from the original OS X Install Discs that came with the computer, a Snow Leopard upgrade DVD or if you use a Bootable Clone as a Backup you can boot from it and run DU from the Clone.

Slow start up and not responding Firefox 3.6.13
Slow start up and not responding when I open Firefox 3.6.13. As long as 1 minute. I tried in save mode and it doesn't seem to happen. I used McAfee before and now use Norton IS with Real Time Malwarebytes. Still the same speed opening up, so the virus software is not causing the problem I think. I disable a lot of the add-on and still the same problem. Any suggestions?
Vista OSIf other softwares runs fast and smooth it's obvious that it's a Firefox-problem.
Probably because of a corrupt profile.
I have done a "checklist" you could follow here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/667207#answer-124643
Regarding slow start up, it's a common and old problem.
Not all FF-users experience it as a problem, but I used to belong to them who suffered.
If your cold start up (the first start after a Windows boot) is really slow, but a warm start (the second time you restart Firefox) is much faster - then I think I can help you.
Try my own simple solution here: https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/762446#answer-119951
I run on Win 7 64-bit and on Firefox 4.0 betas, but that doesn't matter as it works also on older Windows and Firefox versions.
Regarding your anti-virus software. I have tried the most of them. The best tradeoff is in my opinion Eset Smart Security (NOD32).
If you want to try it: http://www.eset.com/download/free-trial/international
I hope this will help you :) -
Intel Core Duo, very slow start up and doesnt recognize airport
Hi,
I just got upgraded to a 2GHz Intel Core Duo (10.4.7) by Apple, after they couldn't fix my iMac G5 iSight. But ever since I got it, on the initial start up every morning, it doesn't start up right away. When I press the power button, the sleep light dims on a little, stays on for about 30 seconds (with a blank screen) then the computer will eventually start up (Much much slower than normal)
Once it finished starting up, and gets to my desktop, my airport icon doesn't show up, and when I look for it, the computer tells me that there isn't one installed (There is).
I tried just restarting it, still doesn't show up. So I shut down, and power-up again. It starts up fast and normal, and then my airport card shows up.
Any idea what is causing this?
Thanks in advance!

parks2,
Have you reinstalled your RAM?
Have you run the Apple Hardware Test? Check System Profiler under Diagnostics after each startup, as well. -
Slow start up and Shut Down since upgrading to Mountain Lion - Etrecheck Result query
Hello, I have recently upgraded my operating system from Snow Leopard to the latest Mountain Lion from the app store. My Macbook Pro (early 2010) is now experiencing slow start up times (more than 1 minute) and slow shut down (more than 45 seconds). Programs such as iPhoto and Firefox are now taking a long time to start up too and the multicoloured wheel is appearing a lot.It was always snappy and very quick with Snow Leopard. I have seen that quite a lot of people seem to have had similar issues too.
I have Verified and Repaied my disk, reset SMC, and PRAM numerous times and cleared the system caches, as well as making a new user account and opened in Safe Mode. "Searchlight" has finished indexing. Nothing I've done so far has helped the issue. I have run an Etrecheck and note that a few things have "failed", the results are below. Does anyone know what these items do or how to correct them? These could be the cause of the issue as they are Apple items - e.g. account, ID and @me.com processes.
I did not do a clean/fresh installation of Mountain Lion, but I did verify the Snow Leopard disk before I installed it. I'm thinking perhaps to do a clean install but I'm not sure if this will resolve the "failed" Etrecheck issues or not?
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks in advance.

Slow Start up and other issues
Hi MBP users please help if u can...
I have a very slow start up time the last 2 days.
When finally up the hard disk is makes random ticking noises (not good when I'm recording music)
Also In the last couple of weeks I have been getting 'Random Shut Downs' Although this may have been due to a 'one click' surge protector and gang socket. This has been taken out of the loop and replaced with a standard gang socket - and I have no random shutdowns today.
I have read through previous posts regarding these issues and tried these solutions:
Verified disk permissions
Zapped the PRAM
Apple Hardware Test
Nothing has worked - so I figure its time to start afresh - with a complete re-install!
I'm not looking forward to this as my software (Logic Pro) will take an age to set up to my requirements
Just wondered if anyone may know of another solution
Also as a side-note when I start up - I sometimes see the Hard Disk as my previous lap-top name/image (G4 PowerBook) could this be part of the problem?Could be - because of the disk image, you actually have two mountable disks with OS X systems on them. Having two Mac OSs is not a good idea, and since one of them is not a valid Mac OS for the Intel-based MBP, this is a problem. Your occasional flash of the wrong disk suggests that this is your problem.
You might try opening the disk image from the G4 and deleting the System folder from it - you don't need it, and that is a likely source of the problems...
Ps. 7+ minutes - wow! -
Satellite Pro - Slow start up and sound is messed up
I have had my *Toshiba Satellite Pro* with *Windows XP* for a good few years now. She has always worked like a gem and has given me no problems until a few weeks ago.
A few weeks ago I was downloading a program and with it came the very unwanted and unliked "Antivir Solutions" virus. I did everything I could to get rid of this disaster (thanks to the help of support forums) and I think I managed to get rid of it, but ever since then my computer has not been the same.
I was having trouble downloading a PDF document a few days ago and it froze so I tried to restart which caused the computer to have a hissy fit, deleting my user account which meant I had to set all that up again from scratch. And, now, the computer takes a good 45 minutes from the time you press the "ON" button to when it is ready to start working. Not to mention, it takes a good 10 minutes each time you click an icon for the program to actually start..
I have tried defragmenting the system and have tried uninstalling unused programs to speed the computer up, but it hasn't worked.
I have also run several antivirus programs (such as Norton, AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials) to make sure I have no nasties messing me up, but they come up clean.
May I also add- The sound is messed up also. Whether I use the inbuilt speakers or external speakers the sound is disjointed and broken. As is any Video I play.
I just don't know what to do.
I cannot really afford a new computer, but I need my computer to be reliable. I use my computer for 12 out of the 24 hours in each day...
*What can I do?*Hi nicoletrist,
I dont know what notebook you have exactly but I think the slow Windows start is caused due the viruses that you have or had.
Few years ago I had also a virus and it was causing a very slow start up, it did take up to 10 minutes until Windows was loaded and the only solution to get rid of this was using Toshiba recovery disk.
I would recommend the same to you. Use the Toshiba recovery disk to restore factory settings and backup your data because everything on HDD will be deleted.
Im sure after using recovery disk your notebook will run like a charm again! :) -
Slow start up and no Apple logo during post
Greetings everyone and Happy Holidays.
My question deals with my son's mini which is configured slightly different than mine. His has 256mb ram, no super drive, he has the 1.42 cpu and 80gig HD.
The problem is slow start up / post speed and slow overall system performance compared to my mini and my grandson's mini. My grandson's mini is exactly the same configuration as my son's and they are networked at home and have a broadband cable connection to the net.
We didn't realize the difference in start up methods between our minis until recently when I restarted my son's system and noticed a screen filled with text scrolling down as the mini started up. I asked if this just started happening and he said it did it from the day he first started it up. Then I noticed there was no Apple logo like the other two mini's has during post.
We compared settings between my grandson's mini and my son's system but didn't really find much. We tried reinstalling 10.4 with no change. We looked at the system resources and didn't really see much other than the system showed only having about 4 mb ram free. We are all running OS 10.4.3 with all the recent updates.
It takes a good 2 minutes for this thing to boot compare to our mini's taking about 45 seconds. I didn't look at start up items in his ACCOUNTS area and I'm not currently at his computer. Thanks for any help you can give.
We LOVE our mini's and I'm sorry I put up with MS for all these years. Apple truely does have a well designed, well built, reliable product.
Thanks,
Kenny GHi again.
Thank you all for your replies. I will be talking to my son shortly and will pass - on your info.
Upon returning to this forum to see the replies I got to my question, I reviewed my original post and it seems a bit confusing so, I'll summarize with more clarity.
Me, my eldest son and his son (my grandson), all have mini's. I bought my son his mini first (1). Then about 3 months later I bought my grandson his mini (2). Finaly, about 3 weeks ago, I bought mine (3).
Now, my son and my grandson have pretty much the exact same mini and they are configured like this:
CPU = 1.42gig
RAM = 256mb
HD = 80gig
WiFi = not installed
Bluetooth = not installed
DVD/CD = combo drive
OS ver = 10.4.3 Tiger
Both of these are networked in my son's house.
My grandson's mini (2) runs much faster AND (this is what concerns me with my son's mini (1)) the boot sequence does NOT show anything on the screen until the Apple logo appears then contiues to boot to his login screen - all taking about 45 seconds. This appears to be a normal (good) boot sequence, which is the exact same method that MY mini goes through at boot.
NOW - My son's mini boots very slow and what concerns me with his mini is that the system boots showing text such as what you would see when a DOS system boots, batch files running and such. All this text scrolling up the screen certainly does not show one my grandson's mini nor mine.
I did the reinstall of Tiger 10.4 but I did NOT do a clean install.
So, mini (1) boots and runs slow, showing a bunch of stuff on the screen during boot. Mini (2), which is the exact same mini, boots fast and runs almost as fast as my mini.
Anyway, I hope this helps clear up my problem and will be awaiting any further info. Thank's

Time machine starts well, and then slow as cold molasses
Hi All,
I've scoured the net for clues, but no love.
I've set up a new external drive for TimeMachine. I created a single partition with Disk Utility, formatted as HFS+ and told TM to use it for backups.
Clicked go. Yay! Lots of data cruising along and after a short while 40GB of the 90GB backup is copied over.
And then it stops... almost. Now it copies new data over at about 1mb per minute. Checked "top" and very little activity going on. Checked console and it reports no failures of backupd and in fact backupd uses a bit of CPU time every minute or so.
In the last hour, about 80mb of data has been copied. I've opened the backup package file and am watching as each new file is copied over.
I've shut everything down more than once and restarted. When I tell it to back up, it knows where it left off... does a lot of disk churning and then begins it's crawling copy again. Thanks for the replies. I've read about how it starts slow and later gets into a groove and picks up, but mine starts fast and flies along nicely and then grinds to a halt. I can open the package file and watch as a new file (say a 5mb video clip) gets backed up every minute or so.
During the slow time, I can copy large files onto the drive quickly and easily, so it's not the drive, or the usb connection.
Can TM go from fast to slow and back to fast? I guess I'll let it run overnight and report my results...

Mavericks slow start up and shut down
Hi everyone,
I have a late-2011 macbook pro with OSX 10.9.5 running on it. Ever since I updated to Mountain Lion my machine has had very slow shut down and start up times. This has persisted since I updated to Mavericks. My shut down time is about 30-45 sec. My start up today was 1 min 30 sec, with another 1 min just to open up Safari. I have tried a number of things to fix it, but nothing has worked and it's incredibly annoying. I was wondering if anybody could help me out with this.
ThanksIn addition to the above, my spinning colour wheel seems to be popping up a lot more, even for the most mundane of tasks (i.e. clicking on a menu in Safari)

Xcode causing slow start up and shut down times
Hi,
Before installing Xcode my mac had a start up time of no more then 30 seconds and shutdown 5 seconds, since installing Xcode these have changed to 1 minute 15 seconds for start up and 10 seconds to shut down. Is this normal? My friends mac has done the exact same thing, is there any way to fix this without removing xcode?
Many Thanks,

Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
I have Xcode installed on my Mac but haven't noticed that it affects startup or shutdown times. Perhaps that's because I've had Xcode installed for a long time.
As far as I can tell Xcode has no "helper" applications that might slow startup or shutdown. You might look at the "Login Items" list in the Accounts panel of System Preferences to verify that.
I'd also launch the Console utility and search for any messages during the time your Mac is starting or shutting down to see if you can see anything that explains what you're seeing. -
Slow start up and shut down after Zenworks installation
I hope someone can help me out on this one. Not sure if I am posting the
right forum or not but here we go. After I installed Zenworks on our PC's
here at work, we have a noticed a distinct difference in how long it takes
for the PC's to start up and shut down. Before installation, everything
was very quick, like it should be. Now it seems to take some users 3-5
minutes to start and shut down their PC's. The machines are running
several different OS'es. Windows 98SE, Windows XP Pro SP1 and Windows XP
SP2. No one OS has more problems than the other. Has anyone heard of
Zenworks causing this issue or heard of a way to prevent this? I would
really appreciate any help you can provide.
Thanks!

Slow start up and disk verification message
I have updated to 10.6.5.....
After update i'm facing slow start up....
after disk verification I found the following message.
Even after repairing i'm getting same messages..
Please help me to solve it..

Nevertheless, those messages are innocuous, will be repeated whenever you repair permissions, and are unrelated to your problem.
The initial startup after updating will be slow. However, thereafter they should return to normal unless you have issues in your system installation such as not repairing the drive and or permissions before you updated.
So, do this now:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Then download AppleJack - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate - and read the documentation carefully. Install the software and follow the instructions on how to use it. -
Dear mac users,
I know this might be normal for every Mac or PC,
my PB is 6 months old, and it's start up and shut down time is kind of slower than before, can anyone kindly tell me the reason about this please??
Thanks^^Try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes repair thread.
Doing the things in his link is a good start for a monthly maintenance program.
Do everything in the link and let us know.
Cheers!

How large is your HD AND how much space do you have left?
If you have not already done so, repair permissions and restart your computer. Instructions for doing so are in the OS Help menu and in KB.
If repairing permissions do not work try the following:
Boot up from your install DVD and run "Repair Disk" from the Utility menu. When done, restart back to your desktop, repair permissions and restart your computer. Check out: Troubleshoot the spinning beach ball
Regarding your slow start up: System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items - get rid off all you do not want and/or need.
