VERY slow startup/performance - Cocktail?

First off, I have an iMac G5 2 Ghz w/ 512 memory, OSX 10.4.8.
I have two accounts on this because a while back, probably due to a bad font, my entire Adobe CS2 suite suddenly became unusable (interminable beach ball). I deleted the font and trashed my Adobe preference files, but I still had issues. My workaround was to just create a second account and install CS2 on there, and that worked, so good enough for me.
That was several months ago. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my problem now, which is that my Mac is taking about 30 mins (seriously) to start up, from grey apple screen to plain blue screen to login to my desktop. Once I'm in, I'll suddenly get the beachball for a solid couple minutes while doing things in applications, especially when launching Firefox. Sometimes it'll lock up completely when I try to click out of the screensaver. This has been in the last few days, both accounts.
All I can think is that maybe I've screwed something up sharing files between accounts. I mainly use my 2nd account now, hadn't logged on to the 1st in quite a while, but I finally did last week and then did some flipping back and forth copying things, and it seems like it's been since then that I've had these issues. I've also had to restart by holding the power button because it was hopelessly locked up, which I know is something you should don't.
I've done the whole Disk Utility thing, repair premissions, verify disk, and it corrects a few things but always says I'm OK. I'm wondering now if a cron script maintenance utility like Cocktail would help (I have no freaking idea what a cron script is). I've read in some forums that it can help resolve issues that sounded similar to mine, without having to go into the Terminal or whatever, which I again know nothing about.
I know this is long-winded and I'm repeating some stuff from other topics, but hey, points to whoever answers. I've downloaded Cocktail but I'm kind of scared to run it now, just mainly wondering if I should go ahead and do it, or if not, what. Thanx!

You don't need Cocktail to run the maintenance scripts. IIRC, they'll run (at least in 10.4.8) if they hadn't run at their scheduled times when you restart. Alternatively, you can run them yourself in the Terminal.app located in /Applications/Utilities/. Launch it, type in this command followed by hitting the return key (to enter the command):
sudo periodic daily weekly monthly
enter your password, carefully, since it won't show up on the screen and hit the return key. When it returns with your username$ (the terminal prompt), quit it.
BTW, you can use any combination of daily, weekly, or monthly or run them one at a time; e.g., sudo periodic daily, runs the daily task.
Whether or not that'll fix your problems, I doubt it. The first thing I'd do is boot the machine with the Apple Hardware Test disk that came with the machine and run the extended tests. Second, I'd put more RAM into that machine. Third reinstall the 10.4.8 COMBO update.
If none of those fix the problem, then reinstall the OS, using the Archive & Install option, saving user and network settings.

  • Very slow startup on 2010 iMac

    Hi
I have a medio 2010 iMac 27" and it's a great computer. Still very fast and plenty of power.
From one day to another though, it started booting incredibly slow. Not that I'm sure, but I suspect to begin from right around the time I upgraded to Mavericks. The boot doesn't seem to get slow until it hits OSX (desktop view). But from here on it takes forever until I can start opening programs. Sure I can click the icons in the dock, but the program doesn't open til loooooong after. It never results in a crash... it just takes forever. I estimate the time from when I press the power button till I can start using the computer is around 10 minutes!!!
Then when it's done with the long startup, it works perfectly. No delay or stall what so ever. Just as quick and powerful as ever.
Of course I have tried many things already:
    unplugging all peripheral devices
    clean up in start-up items
    using CleanMyMac
rebooting from "start disk" in system settings
running controll/repair disk permitions and controll/repair disk from disk utilities
resetting the PRAM (cmd+alt+P+R during boot)
this solution as well: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/#slideid-23467 1
None of it seems to help. I have been encouraged to try to have someone look at my system startup log from the console to see if anything can be discovered from there. Can anyone help me with this? Or maybe someone has another idea for a solution?!

Are you using Boot Camp? If so is your partition NTFS? If so this could be the problem creating a slow startup.

  • Very slow disk performance in Bootcamp 2.1 with XP Pro SP3

Tried bootcamp today and for some reason disk access is painfully slow. XP shouldn't have these issues on such a fast machine. Is this a known issue? Is there a work around?
As it stands XP cannot be used for anything useful due to poor disk performance.
    Any help greatly appreciated.
    RobP

After more digging around I discovered that Bootcamp was operating my hardrive in PIO mode rather than Ultra-DMA - hence the very slow performance. I tried looking for drivers but failed. In the end I installed Vista Premium 32bit and everything now seems fine.
I wonder if bootcamp will get updated to give XP users the full speed of their Mac Pro drives?
    Either way, I'm now sorted

  • CS6 Very Slow Startup?

    Hello Folks,
I've just applied the latest update, but am experiencing very slow image loading times between LR 4.1 and CS6 Extended edition.
I am using an iMac 27 2.8Ghz with 8Gig of System Ram, over 300Gig of HDD free space.
Upon selecting edit-in CS6 with an image in LR 4.1, CS6 starts up with a long splash screen, loads, then I get a spinning grey circle, then CS6 loads on the desktop, then I get a colored spinning circle, before my image finally appears.
I have performance set to an external scratch disk witih 624G of free space, 5644 MB of memory usage at 74%, HS at 30 CL at 7 CTS at 1028K
I have CS5 still installed and it's load times are about twice as fast as CS 6
Any help or suggestions on how I might resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,
    Jim

I changed the scratch disk, to my internal which has 300G of free space but also kept my FW800 external 600G of free space as well.
Now things seem to be running faster.
I've tried opening .psd and .dng files, maybe the .dng files load a bit faster.
After I reinstalled i did a complete update againk which included ACR 7.1
I also tried reinstalling CS6 over itself, but not sure if that might have made a difference or not. The reason I did that is that I'm getting a separate error messge when I select PS Support Center.
The error messge states, Adobe Air, this application is damaged, try to re-install the application.

  • Photoshop Elements 11 : very slow startup

    Hi
Here is a description of my problem:
    I boot my machine.
    I start Photoshop Elements 11.
It takes a very long time to get ready ( loading color settings and workshop modes )
I close Photoshop Elements 11 when I am done with my project.
All subsequent startups of Photoshop Elements 11 are very fast.
    My question
How can I avoid the very slow FIRST startup of Photoshop Elements 11 ?
Can I pre-load the needed services (or whatever) when I boot my machine or when I login to my user account ?
Thank you in advance for your help

Thank you very much, Pat, for your great help.   The link has inspired me to download the trial version from the Adobe website and go from there:
"Adobe Download Assistant" was automatically downloaded before the download of the trial version began.  With the "Adobe Download Assistant" up and running, the download of the trial version took within 30 minutes.  I then got to enter the serial code of my already purchased PSE 12 right after installation of the trial version and completed the whole set-up process (without even opening or using the trial version at all).
It is rather counter-intuitive that one should start with a trial download even when he has gone straight into buying the product.  It was as if the trial version was a bridge to facilitate the official download because the trial version provided the "Adobe Download Assistant".  Maybe, it is expected that people would always take a trial before buying?  Or maybe, it is expected that most people would already have the "Adobe Download Assistant" handy?
Anyway, I am glad there is a solution.  In this case, I think the key is to get the "Adobe Download Assistant" which comes with the trial version.  Hope this post will help others who might face the same issue too.
    Many thanks again.

  • Very slow mac performance

Mac is very very slow, I upgraded the RAM to 3GB but the difference wasn't noticable. I then downloaded the iDefrag application. The iDefrag app is unable to run a full defrag because there isn't enough contiguous space available.
iDefrag support team advised my HDD is in too much of a state to perform defrag and to create a boot disc and run it from there. I am unable to create a boot disc as my mac's DVD drive no longer burns DVD/CDs.
I have cleared nearly everything off my mac except software applications and the Adobe Lightroom 2 catalog file, which is 10GB. But I don't understand what is using the majority of my HDD space.
    Any advice is most welcome.
The HDD size is - 119.69GB
    Used is 58.75GB
    Available is 60.94GB

I'd launch the Activity Monitor utility, set the list at the top to "All Processes", then click on the CPU heading until the top CPU users are at the top of the list. Continue to work until things slow down, then see what's consuming CPU time.
You should also select the "System Memory" tab near the bottom. If after you've been using your Mac for a while, the value for "Page outs" is greater than zero and increases while you work, then you could benefit from even more RAM.
I don't understand what is using the majority of my HDD space.
See this thread for advice on tracking down "missing" disk space:

Ignore the command in the second message, instead using the "du" command given in the sixth post.

  • Very slow browser performance

Hi and thanks in advance for your time.
My internet browsing is painfully slow. I tested the speed on speedtest.net and on speakeasy.net, the result were:
    MP3 file download (5MB): 2 sec
    Video clip (35MB): 14 sec
    Movie (800MB): 5min
    Download: 20 MB/s - 26053kbps
    Upload: 6.52MB/s - 6594kbps
    Ping: 71Ms
Another useful info is that since the last update, Safari has crashed few times, particularly with s website for music that has lots of QT videos. However, the speed was very slow even before the last update
I use Comcast with a DSL modem that was reset by comcast prior to performing the test (did not see improvement after that). Supposly, I got more speed that what I am paying for, but again, it is QUITE slow.
My computer is a 2Ghz PowerPC G5 running 2Gb RAM, bus speed: 667Mhz, 128MB video RAM, HD is 232GB (123 are used mainly on music, video, photos and keynote docs)
    What can I do?
    Thanks!

Let's try and deal with the slowness first:
Adding DNS codes to your Network Settings, should gives good results in terms of speed-up:
Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu. Click on TCP/IP and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' enter the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(An explanation of why that is both safe and a good idea can be read here: http://www.labnol.org/internet/tools/opendsn-what-is-opendns-why-required-2/2587 /
Open DNS also provides an anti-phishing feature: http://www.opendns.com/solutions/homenetwork/anti-phishing/ )
Wikipedia also has an interesting article about Open DNS:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenDNS
Whilst in System Preferences/Network you should also turn off 'IPv6' in your preference pane, as otherwise you may not get the full speed benefit (the DNS resolver will default to making SRV queries). If you want to know what IPv6 is:
This is Apple's guidance on iPv6:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8708.html
Click on Apply Now and close the window.
    Restart Safari, and repair permissions.
If that didn't do it, then try this as well:
Empty Safari's cache (from the Safari menu), then close Safari.
Go to Home/Library/Safari and delete the following files:
    form values
    download.plist
Then go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Repair permissions (in Disk Utility).
Start up Safari again, and things should have improved.
If your Safari crashes, please copy and paste the crash report here.

  • After updating 10.9.2, VERY slow startup

Hello, I updated 2 days ago to Mavericks 10.9.2.
    I am using a Mid 2010 Macbook Pro i7 2,66Ghz 8GB RAM.
I was using Mavericks without any problem but since this update it takes AGES to startup my macbook, about half an hour...
Once finally starts it goes completely smooth and fine...
    Any suggestions?

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamps of the BOOT_TIME log messages, which refer to the times when the system was started. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Select the messages logged after the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the problem is a slow startup taking three minutes, post the messages timestamped within three minutes  after the boot time, not before. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the beginning of the log extract—not at the end.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent of each. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
☞ If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
☞ Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • MacBook PRO very slow Tiger performance

    dear all,
I have seen this topic many times but unfortunetly none of the tips mentioned has solved my issues.
Basically I am running OS X Tiger on a Mac Book PRO with 1G of RAM.
CPU wise, no problem, as far as I can see the usage is 30% CPU on average.
RAM wise, about 70% of the RAM is in use.
Now, when I use usual OS X application, the whole systems becomes very slow, for example I have a few (2 or 3) text files open with SubEthaEdit, one terminal window open with just a SSH connection to another machine, and then the regular apps like itunes, Mail, Safari, Address Book, Calendar, Transmit and AdiumX running as well as a few widgets like Clock, Calculator and the Stock Market quotes.
Now, for example when I put my mouse on the Dock, it fails to respond immediately, taking a few seconds to actually display the app name.
More over, if for example a Terminal window is down in the task bar and I click on, it sometime takes 10 seconds to come up.
Same with Adium, I click on one of my contacts, it takes 10 / 20 secs to display the chat window, and if I am lucky I can start typing in it.
Generally, just after a boot, the system is fine, but as soon as I start a few applications, the systems becomes very slow, even sometimes fails to respond.
One particularity is that I work with a Japanese username under a English OS X, as far as I know, this shouldn't be a problem.
Other thing is that I enabled the OS X firewall, but I am still experiencing the same issue when not connected to any network.
I hope those are enough informations concerning my issue, one more detail is that I did disable startup items and check if no extra deamon was running on the system (I did Repair my disk permission as well)
If anyone has an idea on where to check next and what could cause this slowdown issues, that would be great.
    Thanks in Advance!
    Alexis

20 GB of swap? something is definitely wrong. I run more applications than you, which are more memory-intensive, and my swap never goes above 512 MB. Granted, I have 1.5 GB of RAM, but still...
Putting swap on a different partition of the same disk won't help at all. The bottleneck is still disk I/O, plus now the heads of the hard disk must seek farther to go between swap and reading/writing your actual data.
I would open your applications one by one, from a fresh boot, and see which one eats up all the memory. 20 GB is an obscene amount, and points to a problem.
Edit: I checked again. Menumeters says I'm using 256 MB of total swap space right now, but in Activity Monitor my VM size is listed as 5.46 GB. I'm assuming that's what you're looking at in Activity Monitor. Still, 20 GB of VM size seems obscene to me.

  • Kapsel Fiori Client (FC): self-built iOS FC shows very slow UI performance

    Hi Experts,
I have used KapselSDK to build our own FC using:
    SMP3.0 KapselSDK SP07_PL00
    Cordova 3.6.3
    Xcode 6.2
    OS X 10.10.2 Yosemite
    Enterprise distribution certificate for deplyment
    .ipa for iPhone4S, 5 (tested)
    ipd also inside Airwatch (tested)
    App config:
      SMP proxy is not used.
    The issue:
We use FC to launch the Fiori Launchpad where there are some Fiori apps. The problem is that after type usr pwd, it took very long time to see the Launchpad UI. Tried the standard FC from Apple Store, and it worked very fast.
Does anyone have any idea? I see some info about the slow UI performance for Android devices which can be solved using crosswalk, but my understanding is that crosswalk is not for iOS.
    Thanks.
    Dong

Have you tired testing the same URL through Mobile Safari to see if it is slow also?
We have had reports of slowness on iOS and we are researching.  The details are iOS uses HTTP pipelining when the connection is slow. This means iOS bundles several requests (2-3 to our observations) together but the ICM does only response to one of them and ignores the others. After a timeout of about 1 minute (transparent to the FLP) the Safari automatically repeats the ignored requests. It may happen that this happens a second time, but not a third time – then the requests are not repeated anymore.  Seems to happen in Mobile Safari Browser more often than Fiori Client and doesn't happen in Mobile Chrome on same device.

  • Very slow Spotlight performance

Hi, I'm experiencing a very very slow (even none) performance when I try to spotlight some files and folders. It has slightly a better performance on the spotlight window. It's working perfect only with apps.
I've been rebuild the spotlight's database and did permissions repairs and other stuff found googling and nothing seems to get it correctly working. It did worked perfect some time ago. But not any more.
    I'd thank some help.

Download and run ALL the free OnyX cleaning and maintenance aspects and reboot.

Spotlight will index again, but see how it works after it's done.

  • Help! Poor performance/very slow in performing GR

    Hi,
I have a production situation where the GR in the system is very slow. The moment "post" button was clicked, it takes approximately 25msec for the system to return the material document number. BASIS which showed that the kernel portion took up the most time (see below). Iu2019m not too sure what to make out of this trace - can anyone help advice how to proceed for the next step in resolving/troubleshooting this?
From what i could see - most of the time is spent in GOODS_MOVEMENT_POST.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Patrick

    Janet, welcome to the forum.
If you haven't done so recently, it may be time to do a full System Recovery.  This will eliminate any glitches that may have occurred from installing and uninstalling programs.  You should be certain to backup all of your personal data before beginning the Recovery.
