Very slow Time Machine Initial Backup to Leopard Server on Xserve with RAID

I'm having trouble backing up my iMac to my Xserve running leopard with dual drobos as my time machine drives
So here is the setup:
Server: Xserve (dual quad 2.8 xeons) backing up to Drobo array with 4x1tb drives running (dual drobos on server) fully patched 10.5 server with 16gb/RAM (showing 8gb free)
Network: 1gbs via catalyst switches on essentially unloaded segment (a couple of folks reading emails)
Source Machine: iMac 24" 3.06 Core2Duo with 8gb RAM
Most important fact: nothing has changed on the server (other than usual updates)
Doing an initial backup of the iMac over the network, and getting peak of about 100Kb/sec, and much of the time it seems to have stalled. Given that the machine has like 230GB to backup, this is going to take a real long while. When I query activity monitor on both the client and Xserve, they are both virtually idle with all resources free (lots of free RAM/Disk/CPU). Neither machine is running any apps right now during the test (other than filesharing, but nobody is using as the office is empty today)
Now one thing to note is the staggering number of files (iPhoto library is ~120gb and holds over 500,000 files [faces?]) giving a total of 1.2M files.
As a point of testing, copied a 500mb quicktime movie to same partition, took <5 seconds.

Should I be concerned that the TimeMachineBuddy widget is producing tons of error messages in the system console (and doesn't seem to work)

  • Can I use time machine to backup on my server HD?

I've mac Leapard with Time Machine but never made use of it because:
    - I don't have and don't want to have an external HD.
    - Don't have Time Capsule, and cannot afford it.
Yet I was wondering if it was somehow possible to use Time Machine, to backup directly to my server (online) for example.

    -(.)^(.)- wrote:
Time Machine backups are NOT supported for NAS devices except Time Capsule or a USB HDD connected to an AirPort Extreme Base Station. All other options are hacks.
I would add that even if a network drive were available, unless it was formatted HFS+ with either GUID or APM depending, it would not be acceptable anyway for TM.

  • Time Machine initial backup fails OS 10.5 with no reason but 'bus error'

I ran into an error on the last system update and had to go back to Leopard 10.5 just to see my stuff. I managed to move my home directory into the newly installed system and all my files are intact. Now I'm trying to get a Time Machine backup before I proceed (my initial mistake was not keeping up with them in the first place).
I had some trouble early on and at one point decided to reformat the external drive (a Fantom Drives GreenDrive, usb, 500Gb). I formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) as recommended, no partitions, and then tried my first initial Time Machine backup.
It predictably spent a long time 'preparing...' and I followed along in the system log. Eventually, the copying began but early on (within the first 45 min) the backup failed with almost no indications in the log as to why. I've pasted the system log below.
One thought I had was that it was weird that there was an automatic request for backup at 12:36:54. I also included the CrashReport, but I can't make any sense out of it.
    any ideas?

I should have added that I've been through about half a dozen sites (including sanctioned apple sites) and their recommendations for getting Time Machine to work properly. I did format the drive once (with extended journaled format and GUID partition scheme, but I didn't zero it out. I'm trying that now and I'll try TM again in about 4 hours.
This morning I tried turning Time Machine's automatic backups off (moved the slider to off in the preferences pane) and manually started a backup (right-clicking the TM icon in the dock and selecting "Backup Now"). It ran further along than before, but stopped again. This time, it gave an error, and I've pasted the log below. I looked but didn't find much helpful on "error 11."

  • Time Machine Initial Backup - Partial Only

I have a WD external drive that was erased by Time Machine. But the initial backup stops at about 1 gig of data (out of the 38 gig that is there). Then schedules another backup in an hour. Why doesn't

    Hi!
Time Machine has worked for several months now but since yesterday i have the same issue. After reformatting the backup disk (file system was corrupt) time machine works but stops backing up after about 100MB.
    Cheers

  • Time Machine initial backup

I just used Time Machine for the first time.  I expected it to backup about 35GB (and it estimated a full backup at 35.54GB) but it actually backed up 30.06GB.  I looked at the Options screen and the only thing listed as "do not backup" is my backup drive which it lists as 2.52GB.  Any thoughts on why the initial full backup does not seem to be the size expected?

  • Kernel panic during Time Machine initial backup

    Hi all!

  • Time machine initial backup is taking over 3 days

I have an external network drive which I am trying to back up my MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8 to using Time Machine.  Why after 2 days is the backup only 40% done?  I know it can take time to set it up but... really?
I had to start over since it is a laptop computer and I do need to take it with me... but I really can't afford more than 24 hours of keeping it on the network.
    What's the deal?  Thanks!

  • Very slow Time Machine!

I have no issues with backing up files with Time Machine, but when i try to activate it to restore a file it takes forever to load. It literally takes a minute or two for the "space" theme to pop up, etc. My Mac isn't old or slow, and everything loads just fine, even applications that take more resources like iMovie/iPhoto with a lot of projects/photos load fine. I've tried searching here, and Googled looking for a fix. Any ideas? Help!

It literally takes a minute or two for the "space" theme to pop up, etc.
There's a HUGE amount of data to be transmitted when you open Time Machine, far more than running a number of normal applications.
You aren't trying to do this using wireless, are you?
If you need to access Time Machine, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN ports on your Time Capsule. Things will go much faster than wireless only, and you'll minimize the chances of any errors due to wireless interference.

  • Very slow Time Machine MacBook Pro Mid 2009

After installing Mavericks Back-up for my MacBook has become very slow. I checked firmware update as recommended by some, but that was rejected by the application provided for by Apple. Also a larger back-up device did not do the job. To back up 1.15 GB took about 30 mins. Before a back-up would take just minutes or maybe 1 hour, if I had not backed up for some days.
    Any ideas?

Running Virtual Box and based on the number of 'Page Outs' swaps more RAM would be useful.  Your MBP will accept up to 8 GB RAM with the following specifications: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.

  • Time machine initial backup duration

How long should it take for Time Machine to make it's first full back up of data? I'm 92GB into a save of 496GB, and it's predicting 11 more DAYS of copying before it's done.  I did have to stop it once, but seems to have restarted.  Is this typical, or should I have just reformatted and started over? Or is this the first sign of HD failure somewhere? My HDs is WD connected via USB2, I think.

  • Help! Time Machine Restore Problem From Leopard Server

    Hi All,
I just did something dumb with my iMac running 10.6.4 and need to restore all data from my time machine backup.
I have a mac mini running Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 which has a time machine volume on an external USB drive.
I have reinstalled 10.6.4 on the iMac and tried running Migration Assistant to transfer information from a Time Machine backup. I am able to log in to the Time Machine volume successfully but I immediately get an error:
    "The Connection Failed"
I have also tried booting into and restoring from the Snow Leopard DVD and get the same results.
I am reluctant to attempt to configure Time Machine for fear that it'll somehow overwrite the backup I have. I do not want to mess with the permissions on the TM backup in order to clone the backup in advance of configuring TM before I get some advice.
Please help! Lost a lot of sleep last night and my wife is very upset.

I do have an extra external drive that I can copy this file to, by assigning permissions, but am not sure about how TM hides and secures the files needed. I'm worried about messing up the only copy I have of this data.
Don't change anything in the backups. Ever.
Your best bet may be to do a full system restore of the desired backup from the server to the USB drive; then you should be able to boot the iMac from that.
But if you want to copy the backups, you'll have to be logged-on to the server with an account that has permission to copy the sparse bundle.
If you copy just the desired backup, instead of the whole sparse bundle, it won't be recognized as a Time Machine backup, but might work with either +Setup Assistant+ or +Migration Assistant.+

  • When is Apple going to fix the problem with slow Time Machine backups with Mavericks?

I have been with Apple tech support and they got my Time Machine working by doing a spotlight re-indexing and a safe boot.  This worked for about three days and I am back to very slow backups.  It is impossible for Time Machine to back up every hour when it takes six hours to do the back up.  I don't want to take hours to re-index with spotlight all the time.  I think taking six hours to do an incremental backup is a bit much.  I see that there are many people that have this trouble and it all started with an upgrade to Mavericks.  The question is when is Apple going to fix this problem of slow backups with Time Machine for Mavericks.  I have wasted more time than I care to.  I am think of going back to Windows.  I need good solid backups of my machine and Apple has taken it away with the new Mavericks. Oh, I am using the UBS 3.0 connection so the drive should not be the problem.  Also this has occurred in about the last five months, so I am not sure this problem was in the original Marvericks.

Allen Thanks for your reply.  All I can say is several months ago Time Machine quit working in a reasonable manner.  Right now I have a Time Machine backup that has been running all night and still has three hours to go to backup 6 GB of data.  I am using a OWC 1.5 TB drive connected directly to my MacBook with a USB 3.0 connection.  In the resent past I have added Dropbox, GoogleDrive and a MAMP server on which I am using a program called Learning With Text from Sourceforge.  There have been a lot of questions on the forum about people having very slow Time Machine back ups, so it appears to be a general problem.  I should also state I am getting this very slow backup after doing the Spotlight re-indexing and the Safe Restart procedure that was told to me by apple support.  I have a 750 GB drive in my MacBook Pro which I am constantly trying to keep at a 5% level of free space.  This might be a problem also.  However, I am working on a lot of things and like to have a lot of things on my drive.  Also the heavily loaded drive has not be a problem in the past.  This slow backup business started about three months ago, so something has happen in a very short time period.  Now it seems even the procedure that Apple support gave me is not working.  Currently I am in China and it is difficult to interact with Apple support to solve this problem, but because I am in China having my computer backed up is critical. I have run the EtreCheck and am attaching the results below. I would appreciate any suggestions.  If necessary I will clear out more of my hard drive if that appears to be a solution.  The Time Machine drive was recently reformed so I only have a few backups on it.  I also don't run the Time Machine all the time as I don't want multi-hour backups running all the time.  I run it every few days.

  • Is slow time machine due to a lack of RAM

When I originally purchased Leopard, I used time machine on an old imac G5 with 2.5 gig ram without a problem. I have now changed my Mac to the latest Imac G5 with dual. I am starting over with TM and it is so slow.
I have checked that I have the correct format on my LaCie external 320 gig firewire hard disc. I am not running Symantec antivirus.
In the last 6 hours I have managed to backup 7.75 gig with 137 gig to go. This cannot be right.
I have only 1 gig of ram and have ordered an extra 2 gigs. Will this make a difference?
The data on my new mac was restored from time machine. I have the bug that prevents me from copying and pasting a new icon on my HD. Could this be related?
    Help please

From my experience, there are a couple of things you can check.
First, if you installed any third party memory go to About this Mac and see how much memory your system is recognizing. I had a problem here even though I bought the memory from an authorized Mac reseller and repair facility. We cured it by removing the original factory installed memory and booting with the memory that I installed. It recognized it immediately and then I went back in an reinstalled the factory installed memory and it has been ripping since.
The more and bigger size of files that you are initially backing up the longer it takes. It did take a long time for me to back up about 70 gigs of data.
Also, for some reason, Time Machine doesn't like daisy chained FireWire drives. I have four in my system and the first time I tried running Time Machine, it cranked for hours and then gave me an error. I disconnected my backup drive from the daisy chain and plugged it into its own FireWire port and it worked great after that.
Personally, I like Super Duper as a backup better because it produces a bootable backup and can be scheduled to run whenever you want (I did it once a day). With Time Machine you have to use your install disk in conjunction with Time Machine. However, Super Duper is not yet compatible with Leopard although they seem to be getting closer. It like Time Machine does an initial back and then only changes files when the files change. It keeps only one backup copy of your hard drive not the hourly, weekly, etc that Time Machine.
Many people like Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) which does the same as Super Duper but I am not sure that you can schedule backups or if the backup it produces is totally recopied every time it runs or just updates changed files like Super Duper and Time Machine.
Again, Time Machine is very very slow on the initial backup.

  • Deleting "BAckups.backupd" folder(Time Machine) to install Snow Leopard

Hi .. first time here. This community service is just fantastic. Useful source of help. Many real experts here. Wonder how many people come here FIRST for resolutions, before reading Apple's own support site. I being one of them .. If you can help with this ..
I read in various posts to delete or thrash the "Backups.backupd" folder so that the installation of SNow Leopard can continue bypassing the error message of volume being used by Time Machine. I did that and installation of Snow Leopard proceeded beautifully. Thanks a lot.
I have not used Time MAchine yet ..but will, as soon as I get Snow Leopard into production.
After which, I read in Apple's resolution to "Move the "Backups.backupd" folder from the Trash to the desktop." - Do I need to do this ?? Or, this folder will be created when I eventually initialise Time Machine.
    Thanks & regards.

    V.K. wrote:
where did you read that?? you definitely don't need to do this. what you need to
    do is empty trash.
I think the reference is to Mac OS X v10.6: Cannot install Mac OS X v10.6 on a volume used by Time Machine for backups. I'm not sure how that applies if the OP has never used Time Machine, but according to this article, if there is an existing "Backups.backupd" folder, the trash should not be emptied unless it contains a backup that is duplicated somewhere else.
BTW, in some recent topic, I mentioned that the error message occurs because of an invisible file & that only removing that would let the Snow Leopard install continue. This article apparently says I'm totally wrong about that, but I can't find the topic with my erroneous info in it to correct it -- the Discussions (& for that matter the Support) search engines seem to be having fits today, at least for me. If someone sees that topic, I would appreciate linking to it here, or at least a post in that topic letting other users know I my info was wrong.
    Thanks.
