Very Slow upstream on iChat AV 3.0.1 (v392)
I can initiate and receive iChat Video invitations. Once the connection is established, the incoming video is just fine (typically 300 kbps and 15 frames), but my upstream rate is VERY slow (64kbps at 1 frame per second.)
I have no idea why this is the case. Prior to upgrading to Tiger, I never had this problem. Also, over the weekend, I repaired permissions on my hard drive using Tech Tool Pro 4.
Does anyone have suggestions on how I can remedy this slow upstream problem? I am using Comcast cable broadband service, and can measure an inbound (downstream) rate of 2.7 mbps.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Benjamin,
Item 7 is the pointer.
The 1 fps second problem is caused by:
1) An Add-on for Panther called iCAR This created the ability to leave an Away message on the AIM server (for when you were really not there) and is incompatible with Tiger/iChat. The bits for it are normally in Application Support in a folder called SMBL
2) Apple Remote Desktop being selected and active in System Preferences > Sharing > Services tab
3) A backgound application called folding@home which also uses the internet (night explain the connection speed drop) This helps a University to trace protien molecules.
4) There are two reports of Lotus Notes being a problem
5) a Database called PostGreSQL that uses spare processor time. Unfortunately it has a higher priority than iChat. But it can be altered to use different timings. Do a search at the Topic level to find post on this.
This list is not known to be complete and there may be more listed in the Trouble Shoootng post Defcom linked you to.

Sometimes when my friend (who has a 2.0ghz iMac G5) tries to send me a song iChat to iChat (approx. 4Mb in size), the file transfer is very slow (one song would take about an hour). I have a 1.2 Ghz iBook G4. The weird thing is that sometimes it is slow and sometimes it works really well. Also, whenever i send my friend a song, it goes really fast (even at the times when sending songs to me is really slow). Does anybody know ways to make the file transfer speed faster?
The speeds of your machines really have little effect on the time it takes to transfer file. It all depends on the network and the connections between the two computers.
It can be a variety or problems from congestion, to the packets taking a longer router due to congestion, peak hours, etc.
So the question is, where is the file being transferred from and where is it going, as well as what type of connection does each user have? The closer the distance and faster the connection, the faster the file transfer (in most cases).

Very Slow Speed & BT seem unable to fix
Hi All,
First time post and would very much welcome anyone’s view on my problem.
Apologies if it’s a bit long!
The problem: Very slow download speed, going as low as 50kbs. Prior to this issue my download speed was around 4.5Mb but since this issue started it has reduced to around 1Mb first thing in the morning which decreases as the day goes on.
The results of a previous BT speedtest were Download Speed 190Kb / DSL connection rate 6.62 Mb (Downstream) / 448Kb (Upstream) IP Profile for line 5Mb
(All tests were carried out using a single Windows 7 desktop pc with a wired connection to a home hub 2)
6 Feb – Contacted BT to advise of speed problem and was informed that they would need to run a test which would take 48 hours.
8 Feb – Contacted BT to be advised it could be a problem with the home hub or network not passing signal. Further line test carried out and was told that it is not a fault within my property. They would pass problem to Network Faults Dept so they could reconfigure the line and they would call me 9 Feb.
9 Feb – BT Called and following a search on this site I mentioned that the noise margin seemed high (13.3dB/26.0dB) He said it should be 6dB and put in a request for it to be lowered and was told the speed should increase by 11 Feb. (Noise margin was under 6dB by the next day)
10 Feb – BT (Level 2 Help) called to advise the broadband connection is in the stabilisation phase.
11 Feb – Called BT to advise no change in speed. They run test and now say fault is inside the house and an engineer would be required. Oh and it would be a chargeable visit. I queried this as the advisor I spoke to 8 Feb said it was not a problem inside the house but his response was that it was originally a network fault, which was fixed, but now it is a problem inside the house. Sounds Fishy!
Call was transferred to the department that arrange engineers and to cut a long story short it was agreed that it would not be chargeable visit.
13 Feb – BT called to advise an engineer visit 14 Feb
14 Feb – Openreach engineer tested wiring and all was OK. Just to be double sure he replaced the master socket to a 2 port type (hub in top port and telephone in bottom) and was told this type does not require a DSL filter. He also changed the Home Hub 2 to a Home Hub 3 and after still no improvement he concluded BT were throttling my broadband. I’m not sure if he reset my profile but said it should start to improve over the next couple of days.
16 Feb – Still no improvement so I called BT again. They wanted to test the line again and it apparently came back with a network fault and it would take another 48 hours. I then asked to speak to a Manager who reviewed my problem history and transferred me to someone in the Network Department. She did a bit of tinkering and the speed went from 200kb to 400kb, then another bit of tinkering and it went to 550kb. At last, i thought, we were making slow progress but since this call, the speed has decreased again to 130kb. She said that I have to wait another 4 days for it to possibly improve and will call me 21 Feb. They keep telling me I have to wait 48 hours here, 3 days there but unfortunately I now have little faith that there will be any improvements in 4 days time. Is this acceptable or am I being too impatient.

Hello
My first post, and I'm hoping that someone will be able to help me with this.
For a few days now, I've been experiencing very slow broadband speeds (100kbps or less), in contrast to the 1.5 - 2Mbps that I would usually expect to get. I've been on hold to BT technical support for some time, and have got through twice, on both occasions being told that this is a widespread issue and to wait until the next day. However, I'm not seeing any improvement. I'm aware of the problems in Edinburgh and the North of England, but I'm in East Anglia.
speedtester.bt.com shows:
Your configured download throughput speed for this service is 135 k
and then:
Two consecutive attempts have failed to initialise an Assured Rate session for your service. Please raise a fault with your service provider stating that the Performance Tester tool indicated a problem with initialising your Assured Rate session. <script type="text/javascript">// paintProgressAndMessageTestBar(-1,""); paintProgressAndMessageOnBar(-1,'An Error has Occured! I hope this is enough information, but I'll happily supply anything else if I can. The uptime of 1.5 days is the time since I was advised to restart / reset to defaults etc.
Thanks for any help.
Deej.Once a line is stable and working well, it's best left running 24/7
Interventions like resets, replacing accelerators, unplugging the router etc. will cause line "flapping"
And the dslam sees this as instability, and in turn the BRAS lowers the IP profile ....
This is done to achieve stability, and decrease throughput purposefully, all done automatically.
What you have to do, is cure any line noise, plug directly into the master or test socket behind the NTE
faceplate, leave it connected and wait for the throughput to increase.
Very often a rock bottom IP may need a kick to get it out of the doldrums.
Eventually the noise margin will decrease, sync will increase, and IP profile go up.
Depending on how long the line has suffered impulse noise, will determine the time for SNR to come down.
Regardless of which type of phone you used to test quietline ... hum or crackle is a no-no.
It may be the cause of the problems. It could be REIN on the network portion of the connection or dslam
crosstalk, either way it needs to be reported as line noise before you can count it out of the equation. -
My iMac is now running very slow. Every process/application lags, safari, iPhoto, pages, iTunes, etc. Beach ball just spins and spins.....
I have an early 2008 iMac with 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, 320 GB SATA Disk storage with 30GB free. I just upgraded to OS X Yosemite 10.10.1 hoping it would help solve the problem but no luck.
I ran "syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'Channel t|GPU D|I/O|n Cause: -' | tail | open -ef" in the terminal window and received the following in the text window....

Very slow broadband and connection keeps dropping
Hello, we have been BT customers since August 2013, after previously being Freeola customers for many years. We live in a very rural area, at the end of the exchange so we are never going to get amazingly fast broadband, we are estimated 1MB.
Previously using Speedtest.net at the beginning of the year we were getting 0.9Mbps, then in May our internet dropped and we couldn't get a proper connection or speed. We contacted Freeola who after doing some tests, said that we had a copper line failure and to contact BT. We did this and the copper line failure issue was fixed, an openreach engineer tested the line and we assumed all was fine. But we were still getting very slow speeds and the connection kept dropping. So we decided to switch to BT in August, we have put up with the slow speeds and dropping connection for 3 months hoping in vain that once we got a stable line the speed would increase and we would be back to were we expected to be.
When we are using the internet, we very often get "Your connection has been reset" errors within our browsers.
This has not happened, so I have decided to come on to this forum in the hope that we can solve this issue before my hair gets any greyer. We have a BT Home Hub 4 so we have not got all the stats that previous HH had available.
Also as we are in a rural area our telephone connection is through overhead cables and as said previously we are at the end of the exchange.
Please see below for the information that I have been able to get:
Home hub stats:
17:28:52, 28 Oct. ( 68.040000) DSL noise margin: 12.00 dB upstream, 9.50 dB downstream
17:28:51, 28 Oct. ( 67.970000) DSL line rate: 448 Kbps upstream, 192 Kbps downstream

I performed the quiet line test which wasn't too bad there was a very slight crackle, but it was with a wireless phone.
Speedtest.net results:

As said previously before the copper line failure we were regularly getting download speeds of 0.9mbps.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi jacoma,
Sorry to hear that your having issues with your BT Retail services.
You will either be on the ADSLMax (upto 8mbps) service or if your exchange has been BTw 21cn upgraded you maybe on the ADSL2/2+ (upto 12/20mbps) service depending on your line quality and length.
However these upto speeds may not be the speeds you will get as ADSL broadband connections are very dependent on the distance from your property to the exchange and the quality of your line. The further away you are from your local exchange the slower your broadband speed will be.
To enable the community to help you please see the advice below:
Please see Keith's help guide here: Helping forum members to help you, it will go through some checks that are needed for us to help you.
1) Are you in the TEST socket? if not can you please connect to the test socket and repeat steps 2, 3 and 4.
All the below performed in TEST Socket:
2) is there any noise on your line. dial 17070 option2 ,called quite line test, from landline phone. should be silent but slight hum normal on cordless phone.
If there is any noise on your line such as crackling, distictive noise when the phone is connected to the TEST socket and doing the quiet line test then you need to report a line fault to BT Retail by dailling 151. Once the crackling or disticive noise has gone then your broadband should slowly recover.
3) please post adsl line statistics
4) Can you please run a BT speed test (including IP Profile) http://speedtest.btwholesale.com (not beta version)[Best done with a wired, Ethernet, connection] After Quick Test is done you need to click "Further Diagnostics" to get IP Profile.
ADSL Line Statistic Help:
If you have a BT Home Hub like the one below...
Then:
1) Go to http://192.168.1.254 or http://bthomehub.home
2) click Settings
3) Click Advanced Settings
4) Click Broadband
5) Click Connection or sometimes called ADSL (see picture Below)
The direct Address is http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9116 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 1.3)
or http://bthomehub.home/index.cgi?active_page=9118 (for bthomehub3.A firmware ending in 94.1.11)
You will need to copy and past all the adsl line statistics ( Including HEC, CRC and FEC errors). You may need to click " More Details"
If you have a HomeHub 4 then the majority of the ADSL Stats shown in the previous Hubs will not be there.
for HH4 users you can go to hub manager then select troubleshooting then logs and are look for 2 entries together which will show theconnection speed and noise margin for when your HH4 last sycned with the exchange.
There are more useful links on Keith's website here: If you have an ADSL connection, please select this link
cheers
I'm no expert, so please correct me if I'm wrong -
Been having very slow broadband for a few days ( cant watch videos etc ) but its ok to browes slowley. I have a home hub and my laptop is connected via an earthlink cable. Done a speed test and will post results below. Can anyone tell me how to speed my broadband up?

2.4GHZ clients very slow speeds with AP3600
5508 WLC (7.5.102)
AP36021
We currently have a test WiFi SSID setup that uses basic mac filtering on our WLC's
WLAN is configured with WPA and WPA2 L2 Security with WPA Policy and WPA2 Encryption.
For some reason we seem to be getting very slow speeds on clients with 2.4GHZ
for example speedtest.net I get 70mg upload and 65mg download on 5GHZ devices and about 1-3mg download and 1mg upload for 2.4GZ devices!
AP36021 are dual band with 4 channels (2 x 2.4Ghz and 2 x 5Ghz)
fyi - There are no dropped packets on the client stats via Prime mgmt that use 2.4GHZ
Any ideas here?Foreign Primary WLC (let me know if you need the Anchor controller ouput as well)

Hide DetailsWith your line attenuation you should be getting a sync speed of 16000 kbps and a profile of about 14 Meg, however it looks like you line has been capped at 1/2 a Meg, that is why your noise margin is so high ( should be around 6dB ) now this could be due to a line fault ( loss of framing/signal ) or a problem with your internal wiring.
However since you have has this problem for so long your best bet is to ring BT India on 0800 111 4567 and try and get a SFI fault raised so an Openreach broadband engineer can come and see if they can sort the problem out.

Internet is very very slow, I know my location is quite far away from the exchange but this is just silly.
Just ran a speed test:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 41 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 100-250 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :1280 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 135 Kbps
Upload speed achieved during the test was - 357 Kbps
Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 448 Kbps
I have tried the obvious, resetting the router, checking the connections, checking for problems in my area and changing the filers but nothing seems to help.
The master socket is Openreach NTE5
Any help would be good
Thanks
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi Welcome Your IP Profile has dropped because of a noise issue on your line causing the exchange equipment to see your line as unstable normally the profile will rise within a period of 3/5 days providing there are no restarts on your hub all you can do is wait while the exchange equipment restores your profile

Hi, ive been having very very slow speeds for the last 7-10 days speedtests showing anywhere between 200 kbps - 600 kbps which is obviously very bad, when i first move to this address about 2.5 months ago i was getting average of 5.5 mb which is a big diference. i have phoned bt who did test etc & got me to plug directly into master socket which didnt change anything, without going into all the problems ive had since moving i wonder if anyone who knows what there talking about tell me wether these stats from my home hub (black one) shed any light on the problem, also to point out i notice my phone line is a bit crackly when im using it
ps im still directly connected to test socket with nothing else connected except my bt vision into the hub which when i disconnected didnt make any difference either so i have ruled that out. also just for information the connection usually drops 3-4 times of an evening & speedtester.bt.com showed my ip profile is 500 kbps or 1500 kbps on diferent days

24 inch iMac screen resolution options
I have a 24 inch iMac. The native 1920x1200 resolution is great for displaying large amounts of data, but is sometimes too small for my aging eyeballs to see comfortably. The next option is 1344x840 which is easier to see, though a bit grainy, but I
