Very slow Windows 7 boot time

Hey,
I recently bootcamped my MacBook with Windows 7 for the second time and I've noticed a huge difference in booting speeds. I have Windows set as my boot device. After the white screen, the laptop stays at a black screen with a flashing white underscore for around a minute. After that, the computer starts as normal.
How can I remove the black screen, considering there isn't a BIOS for bootcamp?
Thanks in advance,

What happens is Bootcamp has work its magic with the Mac EFI system that is similar to what PC systems call Bios. Its the basics startup instructions for the hardware. Because Windows does not work well with EFI boot systems. A longer boot time can be expected. You can check your Windows portion of the boot with MSconfig although I would not mess with changing anything unless you know what your doing. Otherwise you could corrupt the boot config. I would say my Macbook Pro 2011 takes about 20 seconds to boot into Windows from power up to Windows sign in. Remember your not booting Windows on a PC your booting Windows on a Mac which although BootCamp is a decent way to do that. Its not tweaked as well as say a PC which was designed and built around running Windows. Drivers, hardware, and Bootcamp are Apple. Only Windows is Microsoft. I highly doubt Microsoft worries a lot about making Windows boot well on a Mac.

  • Very slow Windows domain login over IPSec VPN

    Hi
I'm experiencing very slow Windows domain logins over an IPSec VPN connection. The AD is in Site 1, some users are in Site 2. Two Cisco ASA firewalls connect both sites by an IPSec VPN over the Internet.
I made some registery changes on the Windows XP client on site2 to let Kerberos communicate over TCP instead of UDP. Still the logins take extremely long (45 minutes). Profiles are very small, so there had to be a problem with Kerberos, MTU sizes or somethin like that. I already changed the clients MTU settings to 1000 byes, but login is still very slow. I made some sniffer logs...
Does anybody know what the problem can be ?
    Regards
    Remco

    Hi Remco,
The most common issue with slowness over VPN is going to be fragementation. In general below are the recommendations to avoid fragmentation
    1. For TCP traffic, use "ip tcp adjust-mss 1360" on the Internal LAN Interface on the Router. If you are using GRE then configure "ip mtu 1400" under the Tunnel Interface.
If you are not using GRE then the value of "ip tcp adjust-mss" depends on the type of transform-set being used E.g. AES\3DES etc, so you can increase the value of TCP adjust command from 1360 to a higher value. Though I will start from 1360 first for testing.
Also take a look at the below article for MTU Issues

Back up is very slow on 2 tb time capsule. After 2 days only 60 gb of 320 gb completed. Have connected ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

Yes, that's terribly slow.  You should get somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-24 GB/hour via Ethernet, assuming there isn't a lot of conflicting network traffic or your Mac's CPU is under very heavy load.
Are you sure you're actually using the Ethernet connection, instead of WIFI?   To check, turn Airport off.  If the backup fails, it's on WIFI.  In that case, you need to set Ethernet as the "preferred" network, via System Preferences > Network.  Click the "gear" icon at the bottom of the sidebar and select Set Service order.  Then drag Ethernet above Airport.  When both Airport and Ethernet are on, that will make OSX select Ethernet over Airport.
If that doesn't help, see #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • MacPro has recently become slow (5+ hour boot times!)

    Hi all,
Let me say in advance that I very much appreciate all patience and assistance with my problem. I'm the kind of guy who's never run Terminal, so that's what you're dealing with.
In the past few weeks I've had some booting problems where the grey startup screen has shown a spinning wheel for a bit longer than normal. Once logged in, some tasks take unusually long to accomplish (stuttering video, loading a normal amount of files in an opened folder, launching an application, copying and pasting, etc).
This past week I couldn't boot at all and I tried to boot in safe mode with no avail. But then I booted up and left it on overnight -- in the morning I was in! Then when I rebooted to see if the problem was a temporary one, the boot time was several hours.
Some info about my Pro: it has 4 internal 1TB drives, none of which have fewer than 70-400GB of free space. The boot drive (1) mirrors to drive 2, and the other drive (3) mirrors to drive 4 (so, 2 drives, 2 internal backups). I also have my data backed up on BackBlaze, but I'd rather not lose all of my software and configurations from years of work by doing a clean install. I have pulled all drives but the boot drive and have swapped the boot drive to its mirror -- all with the same results. Does this mean it's hardware? It has NO third party hardware (maybe a graphics card to allow me to have a second screen, but I can't remember if I ordered it that way). It has NO peripherals other than speakers and a wireless keyboard/mouse that I've had for 6 years. My desktop is clean.
I've read a lot of solutions, but haven't tried all of them yet because the computer is so slow that it might take weeks to try a handful. I also fear rebooting, since I'm not sure it will start again.
Here is some info from EtreCheck which I've seen requested in similar threads. There's a worrying amount of red.
And I apologize in advance, but if you say "Uninstall xxx" please let me know how.

    Thank you!!!

    For starters, replace the 2600.
    Replace the boot drive ( Matt's Bootdisc 1 (disk0s2) /: 999.35 GB (67.91 GB free)
Never let boot drive get more than 60% full.
You will see huge improvement replacing it with 250GB $160 Samsung 840 SSD
Forget mirror if you are doing that and just clone the system as needed
Use 2TB media and data drive (Seagate Constellation) - if you can get by with 1TB and save fine.
Backups should be two or more and some exsternal and offline. Clone and TimeMachine is a good combination.
Do a clean system install on your new boot drive.
Don't reinstall any 3rd party, and leave Intego out. If you must, then setup a small special "system maintenance" drive with the "system tools" but AV just adversely affect performance and have no place in production system on a Mac.
A bad sector on a disk drive in some areas cannot be mapped out or fixed wtihout a full disk erase.
Redownload 10.8.5 only before and instead of running the installer (and here install onto another drive!) first make a bootable flash drive installer and keep it around.
Instead of using DVDs which I never do even 8 yrs ago plus, just clone or install a small 30GB or less 'emergency maintenance system' partition on one of your drive partitions (even on TimeMachine drive which should be around 2-3TB or more).
If you want to mirror instead of using Carbon Copy Cloner, take a look at the demo from www.SoftRAID.com instead.
Add USB3 Sonnet Alllegro for your external drives - excellent fast performance and reliable.
For fast scratch disks and editing or for graphic catalogues and libraries, a couple SSD drives mounted on Sonnettech.com Sonnet Tempo Pro PCIe ($300) can be found on Amazon and OWC www.macsales.com

  • After Photoshop CC 2014 update - Photoshop is very slow (Windows 7)

After updating today to the latest photoshop cc2014 Version, Photoshop starts very slow and is not useable.
    I updated from V. 2014.1.0 to 2014.2.1 20141014.r.257.
Starting Photoshop Needs 6 minutes (before 1.5 minutes). The menue and button reactiontime is more than slow, you cant work with this Setup.
Is there a Problem with the new release?
And please Adobe, dont tell me, my System has a problem. Did only an update on the CC2014 Suite via creative cloud. Old PS Version (2014.1.0)runs great.
After testing a few time, I recovered my System back to Version 2014.1.0 with Windows recovery and Photoshop works good again.
So whats wrong with the new release?

The CC 2014 update  2014.2.1 is a month old and ACR 8.7 is two days old.  Something strange is happening to you.  First try resetting your Photoshop Preferences. This is a Adobe Photoshop User forum your not dealing with Adobe here. You seem to think you are and your attitude seems like you not open to to possibility that your system may have a problem. I think you may have one..

  • Slow windows 7 boot on 2011 MBA

I'm a bit dissaponted about the win 7 boot time.
On 99% computers with SSD's I've used in the past, the glowing windows logo was just appearing for a second or two. On MBA it stays for 10 to 15 seconds and it clearly freezes.
Full boot to Win 7 takes about 45 seconds - terribly slow for a SSD drive
    Am I the only one?
    P.S. I'm using i5 4/128 11.6" Air.
edit: OK, I was ****** so i reinstalled Windows - and BOOM ! Without the drivers it takes straight 30 seconds from pushing the power button. I need to investigate this.
edit 2: after manual install of drivers - it's the ****ing graphics driver from intel. seems like that windows logo freezes with them. I got to do smth with it coz it's 10-15 seconds longer boot time

    Hello,
Hopefully you are using "Boot Camp" and not trying to install Winblows as the only OS on that Air. It will never work correctly, no matter what the hacking idiots say, and it's illegal - only a fool would do it.
If you want Winblows to work correctly, buy Fusion, or Parallels, and load it virtually. It works a treat. I use both virtualization products, and Winblows works as good, if not better, that when it's installed on a regular PeeCee desktop computer.
I have to use Winblows at work, as well as my Macs - I'm a Computer Network Engineer, and am about to retire soon - I can hardly wait to get rid of every last thing associated with Winblows, except for one dedicated, extremely high end, PeeCee notebook, just so I can re-experience some pain, now and then........
    Cheers,
    M.

  • Safari is very slow, needs a long time to open a website

    Hello there,
I´m using the version Version 7.0.4 on my iMac. The download of websites is very slow. What can I do? Is there any possibilty to make the safari faster?
Thank you very much for your help.

Please answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them. In that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Have you restarted your router and your broadband device (if they're separate) since you first noticed the problem? If not, do that now and see whether there's any change.
If your browser is Safari, then from the Safari menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
    and confirm. Any change?
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select the Advanced tab in the Preferences window and uncheck the box marked
    Stop plug-ins to save power
    Any change?
Quit and relaunch the browser. Any change?
Log out and log back in. Any change?
Enable Private Browsing in the Safari menu. Any change?
Are any other web browsers installed, and are they the same? What about other Internet applications, such as iTunes and the App Store?
If other browsers and Internet applications are also affected, follow these instructions and test. Any change?
If Parental Controls is active for any user, please turn it off and test. Any change?
If only Safari is affected, launch the Activity Monitor application and enter "web" (without the quotes) in the search box. If a process named "Safari Web Content" is shown in red or is using more than about 5% of a CPU, select it and force it to quit by clicking the X or Quit Process button in the toolbar of the window. There may be more than one such process. Any improvement?
Again, if only Safari is involved, open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari, if it's checked. Any change?
Are there any other devices on the same network that can browse the Web, and are they affected?
If you can test Safari on another network, is it the same there?
If you connect to your router with Wi-Fi and you can also connect with Ethernet, do that and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • Photoshop CS6 very very slow (Windows 7)

Hi, im desperate as ive run out of options i think. Photoshop CS6 behaves slow, very slow.
Even with no document open, right after launch it reacts with delay on any mouseclick, sometimes it takes
more than 20 seconds before a menu pops open after clicking. Painting paintbrushes are impossible slow.
    Basically any action is dragged.
Its impossible to work like this. With all previous versions of PS i never encountered this.
    Things i tried :
    - turned off gpu acceleration (i read that gpu can cause performance issues, some ppl solved slowness by turning it off)
    - updated latest nvidia drivers
    - reinstalled photoshop
    - tried to inspect photoshop processes with ProcessHacker, even when at 5% cpu it runs extremely slow
    specs :
    Windows 7
    Nvidia GT545
1 terrabyte free scratch disk space (on C:)
    8 gb ram
    CPU i7 2600

Has it always run slow, or did this start recently?
What anti-virus are you using?  Have you tried disabling it to see it that make a difference?
Are you working over a network?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Mark.
I've never come across your first problem on any of the Apple notebooks I currently own (or have owned in the past). Then again, perhaps I'm not looking close enough.
Have you compared it with any other 12" PowerBook? If not, perhaps you might be able to try that at a local store with units on display.
Otherwise you might want to give AppleCare a call. Alternatively, if you have an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider near you (I don't know where you are located) then you can take it in to be checked.
As for your second problem (uneven illumination), that has been known to afflict other notebooks. My own 15" PB has had its screen replaced on two occasions because of this. Depending on the severity, you might be able to get it replaced. Mine became so bad that the screen was effectively unusable.
To be honest, here in the UK, I would actually try for a replacement PowerBook - if the problems were severe enough and also because your PB is still very new. However the consumer laws in your country (wherever that may be) might be very different to mine.

  • Very Slow VDI Client Login Time

    Hi,
My environment contains two Hyper-V Servers for DCs, Connection Broker, RD-Web, and two Hyper-V servers as virtualization host to thin clients. All Hyper-V servers are only 35% utilized and all client VMs don't have a performance issue.
After setting up the roles and creating the "Personalized Pools", I open the RD-Web, click on the collection and here it takes a very long time in securing connection part, then a warning message appears for the connection broker self-signed certificate,
I accept it and again a very long time to open the VM.
After searching the internet I figured out that I should install "PFX" certificates for the connection broker (SSO, Publisher). In my environment, we don't use a public certificate from trusted root CAs, however, we have our own "Enterprise
    Root CA".
I then figured that I should create a certificate with the following attributes:
Advanced Key Usage: Server Authentication, Client Authentication
Key Usage: Data encipherment, Digital Signature, Key Agreement
I created the certificate and imported it to the RD CB, however, the "securing connection" part was even slower than before, so I duplicated the "Computer" certificate, and configured 1024 bit certificate instead of the old one "2048".
The "securing connection" part is taking half the time now, however it is still very long "+60 seconds" to open the VM.
I still suspect that it is a certificate issue and not sure if I have done the correct certificate.
Would anyone help in this case and providing the correct steps to install a certificate for the RD CB from internal CA.
    Thanks.

    Hi,

  • Very slow performance; external boot drive the cause?

    Greetings.
I bought a 500 GB Hitachi drive for my iMac intending to install it myself. But, alas, I have an iSight iMac and I think it's beyond my ability to do the job. A Mac dealer nearby can do it for me, but wants the computer for two or three days, even thought the installation takes about an hour. They will not make an appointment for me to come in with it and wait.
So I installed it the drive in an OWC Mercury Elite case, cloned the original drive, and have been booting from the Hitachi via Firewire 400. Just about everything is running at well under previous speeds. Lightroom now takes as much as two to five minutes to spool a large file for printing and sometimes does not even send the file to the printer (in fairness, the latter issue happened sometimes with the internal drive – I wrote about it here before – but at least it didn't take a long time to spool the file, which has to happen each time I click "print" until at last it actually goes to the printer).
I'm getting slow performance from Safari (4.1.3), Mail (2.1.3), Lighroom 2, Photoshop (CS3). I can't say I've noticed problems elsewhere, but I rarely use other applications.
I have done all the usual maintenance tasks, besides those the computer does automatically. Repaired permissions. Emptied caches. Burned sage. Etc.
If this is the inevitable result of running from an external disk, then I'll have to brave the installation or pay someone to do it (which I would do immediately if I knew someone who would do it "while-u-wait").
If, however, this sounds like booting from the external drive should not be the problem, and there is something I might do to speed things up, I'd be grateful for your suggestions.
    As always, thank you.
    Leonard B.

Too bad about the site redesign. I had a draft of this message started, then got busy. Now I have no idea where to look for it. (And what happened to the Preview function?)
ANYWAY…  I talked to a tech person at Other World Computing about the problem. He was of the opinion that the iMac SHOULD be showing some slower response if booted from the external drive, but that maybe the sluggishness in this case was excessive. He had me run a hardware scan to see whether there were any bad blocks. After 24 hours, Speed Tools reported no problems. So now I have run every diagnostic and repair tool I know of and every one that was suggested (every one that I own, that is), and the computer is still hesitating so much that I just have to get up and walk away from it sometimes in order to stay sane.
I am booting from the original hard drive when I have to do extended internet research (Safari being the biggest speed offender), but run the iMac from the external drive when I have to do photo editing, since all my preferences, Lightroom libraries, etc., are located there. If I had the time to figure out just where the essential, and relevant, system and application files are located, I suppose that I could copy them and move them onto the internal drive. Then I could just use the external for storage of the image files (can't do that on the internal; there's not enough space). However, if what is going on (slowness issue) is indicative of a faulty drive, I'd rather not use it at all, even as a storage or backup drive.
Any thoughts? Do you suppose this might be a problem with the computer, not with the new drive? I'd hate to ask OWC to exchange it (even if they would do that) and then find out I've got the same trouble.
    Thanks again in advance.

  • Iweb 08 hangs or very slow to start at times.

    Hi all
Iweb 2.0.2 on mac osx 10.5.1 (leopard) at times very - very slow to start or quit - shown in activity monitor and "force quit" as "not responding". It does however eventually start and quit.
This problem appeared out of the blue and occurred at the same time as an internet problem.
After much grasping at straws I am now convinced that it is related to the internet problem (as strange as it may seem). During the hang, if I remove the ethernet cable (or start it without the cable) there is no problem. When the internet connection is ok - no problem.
I unchecked the "auto update" preference in iweb but no difference.
It almost seems that on startup and quit, iweb wants to communicate with god and cannot, so it gets all upset. (that's as techo as I can get here).
Has anyone found this problem or have an answer - mind you all ok if the network is ok. I have sent a "failure report to apple" after the force quit.

    Thanks for the reply
♦ a unique ssid : It is the case . I use Home as SSID for 2.4 Ghz and Home_5G for 5 Ghz
♦ wpa2 personal/ aes encryption : Never thought  using less than that
♦ a 5Ghz compatible adapter on the PC : I use an Intel 5100 adapter on my laptop  that do both 2.4 and 5 Ghz. I use the 5Ghz band on  my laptop  and the main family PC that is connected with a netgear WNDA4100 N900 adapter. All the  other PCs(5 in all) use 2.4Ghz . After disabling Wmm in QOS, i was not able to connect the 2 PCs using the 5Ghz band . They could connect using the 2.4 Ghz SSID though. Re-enabling Wmm allowed me to use 5Ghz again.
I have the Youtube problem on both the 2.4 and 5 Ghz band. As i said when i reconnect my old netgear router, no problems at all.

  • Very Slow Windows Networking

My department is running OS X 10.4, and we're networked with a Windows server for storage and job backup. One of our main backup servers is very slow. Logging into the server can take up to 5-7 minutes, and for a period of 5-7 minutes after that the machine logging into the server will run very slow, even when not copying a file.
Now the backup server is quite large (almost a terrabyte), which is my belief why it runs so slowly. We have two other servers on the same network that behave fine.
Is there something on my end (OS X) that can speed up the problem, or is this a server issue? My boss is demanding answers and our Windows IT guy is placing the blame solely on our Macs (with no evidence of course). Help!

Google for "SMB performance". There are a bunch of discussions on macosxhints on how to tweak SMB performance on Max OS X. I have tried a few different ones, which all seem to help in some small way. YMMV.
Apple SMB is not known for its performance.

  • 3 year old iMac  running very slow, freezing all the time. Advice?

My three year old iMac - 2.4Ghz processor, 2GB RAM, running Lion - is becoming almost totally useless. For many months it has been very slow, with multiple freezes, and then "force quits" on iPhoto and other applications.
First, I tried to free up some space - i now have about 44GB free. Then I ran disk utility etc, Then I ugraded to Lion.
But still I'm getting the same problems. Any suggestions?

It sounds like your problems are more serious than a 'hardware upgrade' issue. My late 2008 MacBook 2.4GHz with 2GB RAM runs applications (and iPhoto) fine. In addition I have run OS X operating systems with little more than 5GB free hard drive space with no issue (being able to run advanced applications like Photoshop).
My advice- if you have simply upgraded to Lion keeping all your systems settings and files intact then you may want to perform a 'clean install', you'll backup your important data/files in order to transfer them back again into Lion. You could even create a Time Machine Backup and use this to move only your data and applications back into your clean install of OS X Lion.

  • HT1338 my mac pro started running very slow not all the time it is only 2 months old

My new macpro has been running very slow off and on (mostly on) it is only 2 months old I took it into the genius bar and they could not find anything wrong.  I took it home and it ran fine for a short while then started up again. I have watched activity monitor and can see no direct corellation.  Anyone have any ideas?

Did you install anything new lately?
Run any programs that purport to "clean", "speed up", or "optimize" your Mac
