Very Slow Wireless on New MacBook Pro

Hi just bought a 13' MacBook pro about a week ago. Immediatley from getting it my wireless internet is very slow. We have a few other pc's in the house that use the same router and they all run fine on the wireless, even our phones run great. When I am plugged in with the ethernet cable the internet seems to work fine but as soon as I am wireless it takes forever. Pages will take minutes to load up. I was on the phone with mac support and what they did didn't seem to fix the problem. I am getting so frustrated and would really like any help. Thank you.

In the Belkin config, have you got 'Protected Mode' On or Off? (Wireless > Channel and SSID > Protected Mode) It's generally faster Off unless a lot of 802.11b devices on your network.
Packet loss or packet re-ordering might cause that drop, as might a high MTU value, but it's hard to troubleshoot ...
(I'm using a Belkin G+MIMO and getting as fast/same performance as hard wired machines)

Your computer is farrrrr more powerful than what you're describing, so something is definitely amiss.
Are you saying in Disk Utility, you are unable to click "Repair Disk Permissions?" Does your user identity have admin privileges? I'm not sure if that's a requirement to be able to repair disk permissions or not, but the ability to repair disk permissions should always be available to you.
Another thing you could try in terms of troubleshooting is to go into system preferences -> accounts, and create a new account. It can be a temporary one just to test this. Then, in the new account, you could see if you have the same problems. You could always delete the account after the test.
You could also try recording to an external drive. A firewire drive would work best (recording to external firewire drives generally improves performance) and would rule out the internal drive as the culprit.
If you are still having problems, you could always call AppleCare, which can walk you through a hardware test, or bring the computer into an Apple store to have them check out, in case there's something wrong with the computer itself.

  • Time machine incredibly slow on brand new macbook pro

    Hello everyone,
I bought a new Macbook pro 8Gb Ram dual core 2.8 GHz in late February of this year. Initially, the Time-machine back-ups worked very well and fast but on April 19 (shortly after my last back up), the hard drive of the computer died. I had it changed by Apple Care (for free given the warranty), but when the computer came back, it still could not boot, being always stuck on the welcome screen. The guys at the store made a complete reinstall of Mac OS 10.7 on the new hard drive and since then everything works fine... except that now (on Lion 10.7.4) whenever I try to do a back-up with the time machine, the progression is incredibly slow. It typically progresses Kb per Kb when I have about 86Gb to back-up....
I have check with disk utility that my time-machine external hard drive is fine. Furthermore, this HD is also used as a time machine for other macs and works very well in these cases. Finally, it still has more than 500Gb available on it.
I would like to know what's going on with my macbook pro ? Why is the time machine basically not working and what can I do to change that ? I am a little worried because, as you know, having back ups is essential and right now I simply cannot do a back up my brand new computer.

    Pierre G. wrote:
Well I started this backup two hours ago and I indeed observe the backup to progress by jumps. But overall it is really slow, right now it backed up 2Gb out of 88Gb.
Yes, after a failed backup, it may appear to be very slow.  Let it run.
Also see #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting, especially the green box.
I just hope the total time will not just be proportional because I don't have 86h available to do the back up.
You must (or it's already spent some time deleting old backlups).  Otherwise, it would have failed.  Besides, the message you posted earlier said there was 508 GB available.
See what the messages say; all that will be documented.

  • ITunes downloads fast on old Mac mini but slow on brand new Macbook Pro on the same WiFi network?

    Hi all,
I have an old Mac mini that's from around 2008 and runs on Snow Leopard. I also have a brand new Macbook Pro with retina display that's running Mountain Lion. Both running iTunes 10.6.3.
I never noticed anything wrong with my MBP's connection speed until last night when I downloaded a free TV episode from iTunes. The download speed varied between 20KB/s and 40KB/s and it took me 7 to 8 hours to download a single episode. I checked my internet connection but there was nothing wrong with it, SpeedTest.net told me I had a download speed of 94MB/s and upload speed of 80MB/s, it was only iTunes that was unbearably slow.
Today I was browsing iTunes again and was planning to buy some movies, but again it took forever for the trailers to download. So I fired up my Mac mini just to see if it would be just as slow. Turned out my Mac mini could download the same trailers from iTunes at a much higher speed than my MBP (around 3MB/s on the ones I tested).
So what gives? They are on the same Wifi network provided by an Airport Extreme, and although my iPhone and iPad are also connected to it, no one else is doing any heavy duty downloading.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Lion runs very slow on a fast MacBook Pro, why?

I have Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, I used to have Snow Leopard and it was VERY fast. I bought Lion about 3 months after its release date. I like it but, all the aplications run REALLY slow! On Snow Leopard, my computer would boot up within 30 seconds but after I got Lion it at least takes a minute to boot up. I also keep seeing the beachball every now and then, and when I look at my ram usage, it's normal. Safari takes for ever to launch, but after its on I have no problem at all. Another wierd thing is that when I am on youtube, Safari itself uses 1.5gb of ram. I don't know if this has anything to do with Lion but when I was a Snow Leopard user my battery health would stay between 95% and 100% but since I have Lion, it "jumps' around. I goes to any random number between 80 and 100. An hour ago it 90% and right now its 82%, tomorrow it will be something like 85%. I've not changed the way I charge and use my battery. Does Lion use more battery?

Oh, and I forgot to add the specs. I have 4gb of Memory/Ram. The processor is a 2.66 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo. It's a 13" MacBook Pro.

  • Connection drops/slows down on new Macbook Pro but works perfectly on older

    Hello,
I have 3 Macbook Pro's and one AirPort Extreme (bought dec 2008), *all has been working flawlessly* for a year until about two-three weeks ago.
    *This is what happens:*
_Old Macbook Pro (2007)_ - *Works perfectly 100% of the time*, always at least 20mbit/s connection
    _New Macbook Pro 15" (2009)_ - *Drops/slows down*, sometimes fast 20mbit/s sometimes slow 0.01mbit/s
    _New Macbook Pro 13" (2009)_ - *Drops/slows down*, sometimes fast 20mbit/s sometimes slow 0.01mbit/s
_iPhones (2G/3G/3GS)_ - *All Work perfectly 100% of the time*
*I have reset the Airport Extreme 20 times* and tried the latest firmware 7.4.2 without luck. I have *even downgraded* to several other types of firmware. But problems still remain. This is doing my head in since I cannot any longer use the Airport Extreme with the newer MBP's.
So, only the new macs seem to have this problem. But the strange thing is that my older computer works 100% all the time!!!
_*Has my Airport Extreme broken or is anyone else having this problem?*_

I seem to have found a temporary solution. If I change the DHCP address series from 10.0.1.X to 192.168.0.X it works for about a week. Then it starts to drop/slow down again. So I use airport utility to again change it back to 10.0.1.X and it works for another week.. And on it goes.. This is so strange I can hardly believe it.

  • Very slow restoring volume on MacBook Pro

I had my external USB 2.0 drive plugged in to the USB port on the right side of my MacBook Pro (1,1) and the estimated time for completion for a full Time Machine restore was about 25 hours. Needless to say I quit and shutdown my MacBook Pro, I plugged my external drive into a powered USB 2.0 hub and attached the hub to the USB port on the left side, rebooted and now the restore is going to take about 2 hours. That's way better...
I thought that both ports on the MacBook Pro where high-speed 2.0 ports. I guess not. From prior experience trying to sync my iPod with this MacBook Pro, I didn'ttry the left port by itself.
A couple of notes for those restoring on a MacBook Pro:
    - When it was restoring at the slow speed I first clicked the Stop button, it asked for confirmation, I said yes and then it disabled (grayed out) the Stop button, but the restore was still in progress. I waited a long time for it to gracefully stop, but it never did. Instead I Quit the Mac OS X Installer.
    - Before starting the restore again I used System Profiler in the Utilities menu of the Mac OS X Installer, to make sure that the drive was in fact connected to a high-speed USB 2.0 port. It was, so I used the Restore System From Backup command to start the restore.
I hope this is helpful to someone.

I find the volume to be very unsatisfactory, at least on my 13" Early 2011 model.  The sound is very weak (with the exception of when using quality headphones).

  • Lexmark s300 will not print wirelessly on new macbook pro

    Hi
I have recently purchased my first mac - macbook pro and i cannot get the printer to print wirelessly. The printer is connected to the router and will talk to my old laptop but i cannot get the mac to do the same.
It finds the printer ok but will not send anything to it. I have downloaded new drivers etc and nothing seems to be working.
Any suggestions? I have tried lexmarks website and mac and still no joy.
    Thanks

I get the same error message ("/Library/Printers/Lexmark/Drivers/LexmarkCUPSDriver.app/Contents/MacOS/Lexmar kCUPSDriver failed") when I try to print on my LEXMARK S605 since I upgraded from Leopard to Snow Leopard (on iMac IntelCore2Duo, 2006).
I updated the system up to 10.6.4, I upgraded the printer firmware, I updated the Lexmark drivers downloading them from Lexmark website.... still have the same bug.
I wish someone will find a solution for us. Thank you in advance for your advices.

  • IPhone 4S doesnt show charge symbol and charges very slowly on brand new MacBook Pro. Not recognised by iTunes. Charges fine on Asus laptop. iPod charges fine on Macbook Pro...

    Hi!
I'm trying to fix a problem I'm having with my iPhone 4S and MacBook Pro.
I did manage to connect it initially and set it up with XCode as well as iTunes.
Today I have spent two hours trying to connect it to my MacBook Pro and I have so far found the following...
iPod 2G - charges from MacBook Pro, Wall Charger, Asus Laptop (works with both my Apple USB cables)
iPhone 4S - doesnt charge from MacBook Pro, but does from Wall Charger and Asus Laptop
                      - Asus Laptop running Linux Mint recognises the iPhone as a device with 'lsusb' and you can browse photos etc
                      - MacBook Pro doesn't recognise the iPhone as a device with the 'systemprofiler' equivalent of lsusb
                      - Interestingly, despite the charging icon not showing, the iPhone either maintains charge or very, very slowly charges
when connected to the MacBook Pro.
Any ideas as to what might be wrong? I've tried both the USB ports on the MacBook Pro and no difference. I've tried the 6 ports
on my old Asus laptop and they all work fine!
    Thanks for your help!

OK.. Went to the Apple Store - they could either book an appointment with a Genius.. or send the phone for
testing and repair. Found out I have a 2 year warranty on it so have a year left.
My research has led me to assume that the USB 2.0 function of my iPhone was faulty from the day I got it (it kept disconnecting the reconnecting but transferred data fast), but soon stopped doing that and ran at about 1MB/s - USB 1.1 speed - and has done this ever since.
The MacBook Pro somehow is trying to use the USB2.0 function and is not letting the phone fall back to USB 1.1.
To test my theory I found an old USB 1.1 hub... plugged it into the MacBook Pro... then plugged the iPhone
into that. Job done. Charging fine, recognised every single time I connect, and only took a few secs to send over my XCode app to the phone and runs fine! I guess this works as the hub forces the iPhone and MacBook both to USB1.1 mode which then works fine! Will just use it like this for a few months then send it in at an opportune moment (want to get some apps out before I lose my device for repair for a while!)
I will in the next week or so test my iPhone on my friend's MacBook Pro (we bought them the same day but I didn't get the Retina cos I like to be able to upgrade RAM, Hard Drive, and replace battery when it wears out). I will also test their iPhones on my MacBook Pro to see whether it really is the phone or the MacBook!
PS I will get WiFi Sync running since transferring 60GB of data over USB1.1 won't be fun... will do a full factory reset on the phone just in case there is an issue there - will post results of this too!

  • IMovie '08 very slow performance on a MacBook Pro 2,33 Dual Core

I imported a 1 hour video clip today. Then I wanted to add 14 chapter marks. After 8 hours trying accomplish this simple task I gave up at chapter 6. It was extremely slow. I then did the same task in the previous version of iMovie in just 10 minuttes. Why is that?
I have the latest update on OS-X and iMovie '08 and all my other iLife '08 perform flawless

I agree/confirm. The new OS update made a significant improvement. I do not recall the settings I used. I just put everything to High and then reduced a few to medium until it ran smooth. I am pretty happy with gameplay now. My startup time is fair for me. It takes roughly 2 minutes for me to actually be in the game playing.
Im not sure if Apple intentionally set out to made this improvement as I read nothing about a video card update in the notice.
I wonder whatelse can be done to play this game at its full potiential on my X1600 MBP...I love to play this with my daughter. To play at all High settings would be jolly fun! lol

  • Lion Very slow!! in Macbook pro 2.6GHz Intel Core2Duo

I need to reinstal snow leopard!! Lion isn´t work well in my laptop

If you have  TimeMachine drive follow these instructions
    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html
Back to Snow Leopard from Lion install method
Read and print out these instructions, your computer is going to be offline and you will be cutoff from help until your machine is restored.
Clear the Desktop, Downloads and Trash of anything you wish to keep by placing their files in the respective Documents, Music, Pictures, Movie folders.
Boot into Windows and backup any files there as well. Disconnect all other drives and devices not involved.
Backup ALL your Users folders (Documents, Pictures, Movies, Music etc) manually (drag and drop methods) to a (not to TimeMachine) external powered drive (HFS+ journaled formatted in Disk Utility) and disconnect, your going to be wiping the entire boot disk of ALL DATA. (warning, everything will be gone and not recovered, OS, programs, files, Windows etc all gone.)
If Lion is hosed but boots: You may want to hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk and use Disk Utility to format the new blank external drive instead of using OS X Lion's Disk Utility. Then reboot into Lion and copy files that way. If you have a backup of your files this is not necessary.
If Lion won't boot: You can install OS X 10.6 onto a blank external HFS+ journaled formatted drive and then hold option key and boot off the external drive and grab your files if you don't have a backup. If your Lion drive won't mount or is corrupted try a Disk Utility repair, as a last resort use DataRescue (commercial software you need to download) to do a 1's and 0's recovery (not pretty, you should always backup)
    Here we go!
Hold c and boot off the 10.6 installer disk that comes with your computer and second screen in just STOP there, don't install OS X yet.
Look up at the Utilities Menu for Disk Utility.
On the left is the name of your hard drive maker (Hitachi, Toshiba, Seagate, WD etc.), click it and Erase (format HFS+ Journaled), give it the same drive name as before, and click Erase...
(note: if you want to "scrub" the drive of old files that haven't been overwritten yet, then use the Security Option > Zero Erase, takes a lot longer)
This should wipe the drive of ALL partitions (GUID, OS X and 10.7 Recovery, Windows if present)
When it's done, quit and install OS X 10.6.
When you setup a first account, use the same user name as before, this way you can simply drag and drop the content of your previous Users folders from the external drive right back into the new Users folders and everything should work peachy. Links in iTunes to music, playlists and iPhoto links especially.
Update OS X to 10.6.8 using the Combo Update for best results.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Run the Software Update under the Apple Menu
Then install all your programs from fresh sources and validate/update.
(Note: If your original machine had 10.5 and you want the free iLife that comes with the disks with the computer, then you'll have to install 10.5 first using the same c boot/erase/format methods as above, then update to 10.6 via the disk, then Combo Update 10.6.8)
Final steps to prevent such a mess from reoccuring
A lot of people use a Carbon Copy Clone of their boot drive to a new/blank HFS+Journaled external drive (used only for this purpose) as a "hold the option key" bootable backup in case something goes wrong with their boot drive or need to restore to a previous OS X version..
Restoring from a bootable clone is rather painless and nearly automatic as it's a duplicate of the boot drive cloned. Make as many clones as you need.
It can be autoupdated to just apply changes so it doesn't take as long as a full clone.
    http://bombich.com/get_ready_for_lion.html
Also use a TimeMachine drive, although not bootable like a clone, is easy to restore stuff from provided you have a installer disk to boot from (Restore TM is right under the same menu as Disk Utility on the installer disk), so if your superdrive is dead or your installer disks are missing or damaged, your out of luck.
Always maintain two copies of your data on two seperate pieces of hardware at all times to prevent a unexpected surprise from catching you.
Do not maintain a Bootable Clone and a TimeMachine partition on the same external drive, seperate drives is best.
