Very slowwwwww computer

I have an A205-S5804 laptop that is just about freezing up. I've done virus checks, disc checks (Western Digital Lifeguard Tools) all showing a good drive. It seems that it's downloading something as the hard drive gets hot and seems to be doing some task(humming more loudly than normal). These symptoms are intermittant. The drive is a Western Digital make.Any suggestions? Also I've never done a Bios update since I'm not sure which update I should do, they're several from Toshiba. I only have about 40 Gb out of 230 occupied. I have also trid to stop a few of the programs that are running but nothing seems to help short of putting a new hard drive or using a program to speed up a computer such as System Mechanic.

Try using a clean startup to determine what's causing it. Is it still slow in that situation?
How can I perform a clean startup of Windows 7 without my startup items to troubleshoot a problem?

The Superdrive on my MacBook Pro ejects audio CDs just a few seconds after inserting them. This happens both with original audio CDs I have bought in music stores AND with audio CDs I have recorded myself, on the very same computer, via iTunes. The same does NOT happen with data CDs (e.g., stuff in mp3 format), which are read just fine. This behaviour started a couple of weeks ago, until then everything had worked just fine for years. I am running iTunes 11.1 under Snow Leopard 10.6.8. Any idea?

You could also try a SMC reset:

  • What am I doing wrong that I can't connect to a very remote computer?

Maybe I just don't understand the definition of "remote" but I can connect to computers on my local Ethernet network, but when I attempt to connect to my dad's computer a thousand miles away, I get a "disconnected" or "offline" comment. He has Safari and Mail active, and we are looking at each other through iChat, so I KNOW he's online.
He's 84 years old, and the communication is killing me, but I've had him turn on all the permissions in Sharing, so I can't figure out why I can't get on his machine. He's got a new iMac/Intel box, and I'm running a G5; we're both running 10.4.7.
When I "edit" his information, very often the address turns from the number I've entered to "0.0.0.0." and I can't change it. Our IP numbers are only different by 50 in the last set, which seems odd to me, but I'm ignorant!
According to the Sharing panel, the IP address is supposed to begin with "afp://" but that gets stripped out when I enter it - in fact, sometimes (but not always) it won't let me enter the slash marks.
I'd appreciate any info you guys can give me.
    Thanks!

    what's this about 'consumer hubs'?
i've tried almost every trick i've read, short of doing a complete dump and re-install of all software. i just can't get connected to someone over the internet. could it be their service provider doing the blocking?
as i've only tried connecting to one other person's computer in one area of the globe it's difficult to say what the problem is.
here's a thought for apple - have a dummy site (for us dummies) that we can access using ard, thusly allowing us to test our own settings to make sure the problem doesn't reside with us.
    any help would be great.

  • Western Digital External Drive and a VERY slow computer. Is my HD failing?

Hello, thank you for looking at my question.
First off, I am NOT very tech-savvy, but I'm willing to research and learn, I'm just afraid to make a mistake and blow up my computer.
I have had my Macbook for 2 years. I have not backed up my hard drive during that time. Bad, I know.
Recently I've noticed my Mac getting slow with the "spinning beach ball" showing up more often and everything getting slower. Usually a reboot will help. Yesterday, for the first time, the reboot took about 8-10 minutes! I figured that wasn't a good sign, so I headed down and picked up an external hard drive (Western Digital Essential model, 1TB) and figured I'd back everything up. I formatted the drive according to the Mac partition model (tech support from WD helped over the phone) and got it going. From 1530 to 0800 this morning, of 52 GB it had only backed up 15.3 GB. The fan was running at high speed the entire afternoon and night. That's about one GB per hour. Is that normal?? Then, it froze and wouldn't respond, or back up at all. Just nothing. I held the power button down and restarted it.
At this point, I am concerned that perhaps the hard drive is failing (hence the speed and fan issues) and that maybe I should be taking it in to a repair shop (we don't live anywhere near an Apple store)
Do you think this may be the case? Is there any way to back up my hard drive faster - before it dies? I have two years worth of photos and papers, etc on there, music and such and it would be a tremendous loss if it all crashed.

Good! Better to inquire than leap!

    Yup.

    No, not normal at all.

As slow as that backup was, anything else will be nearly as bad.
There are four common causes of this:
Your startup drive is nearly full (less than a couple of GBs of free space). If that's the case, find something big you can "archive" to CD/DVD or copy to the external HD and delete.
    The drive is failing.
Corrupted directores, etc., in the file system
One or more "runaway" processes, usually from incompletely-installed or partially-deleted apps

It's a toss-up; try to diagnose what's wrong, or try to get a backup.
The fastest way to back up, with the least "thrashing" of your hard drive, would be to start up from your Leopard Install disc and use the Restore tab to make a copy of your internal HD on the external.
That will copy any file system problems "as is," but if your internal HD is beginning to fail, at least you'll have a full copy of the data (corrupted or not) on the external HD.
Check this to be sure your WD drive will boot your Mac: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787 If not, do all the steps below except #4.
    Here's what I'd recommend:
    1. Start up from your Install disc, per the yellow box in #1 of [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html]
    2. Reformat the external HD, with a single partition, per the blue box there. You'll want the +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+ Format and either the GUID or +Apple Partition Map+ *Partition Map Scheme* as detailed there.
    3. Use the Restore tab to copy your internal HD (almost certainly named +Macintosh HD)+ to the external HD, per #7 in the link above. Note that will copy the name of the internal HD to the external.
    4. When that's done, quit Disk Utility, then select +Startup Disk+ from the Utilities menu in the menubar (per the yellow box above). Select the external HD and start up from it.
    |
The copy may take a very long time. There will be a progress bar, but they're notoriously inaccurate under the best of circumstances. If it completes, and you can start up from the external, post back and we'll see if we can find the problem, and either fix it or confirm that you need to take it to Apple.

  • Very slow computer

I have a MacBookPro since june06; it came with only 512MB and still has 512. My problem is: I've had all kind of computers since early 90's but I think I've never had a computer so slow. It takes time for everything: opening simple applications like text edit, I Tunes or any other, opening or closing windows, saving documents... And if working with "heavy" applications like word or photoshop, it becomes terrible. I can't believe it: the old, old iMac of a frend is much faster... Part of the problem might be lack of memory but not with very simple tasks. So? The same happends with my MacMini dual Intell 2GB. Anybody else to report this problem?

I had a MBP with Core Duo with 512MB. It was pretty snappy. I would suggest that you do a clean reinstall. I think that should fix the problem. If it still persists you should contact apple. Memory is not the problem here. 512MB is pretty sufficient for nominal use.

First you need to get rid of all the malware on your computer starting with Genieo. Also, get rid of:
    [failed] com.Wondershare.TunesGoWatchDemo.plist [Support]
    [failed] PACESupport.plist [Support]
    Startup Items: ℹ️
      PACESupport: Path: /Library/StartupItems/PACESupport
Startup items are obsolete in OS X Yosemite
    Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • JERRY HELP laptop keeps dropping wifi signal, very slow computer

I have read some blogs here where Jerry Lippey?  has helped. PLEASE HELP!!   My c655d-s5200 satellite laptop constantly drops the wifi connection.  just in the registration for this site alone i had to reconnect about 10 times.  computer is only about 1 year old.  computer has always been very slow, even from day 1.  taking sometimes a full minute or two to change pages.  I never complained about it when it was under warranty.  I just lived with it.   and now that it just out of warranty,  I have changed from mediacom cable to us cellular wifi, I am finding out that I have more problems than I thought.  I have a good 4G singal and I am almost 100% sure it is not a problem with the hotspot.   it seems my computer takes way to long thinking. even from day 1 sometimes it will not print a letter that I know I typed.  It has most of the same problems as the person on a ship overseas did in another blog.  If you havnt figured out yet I am NOT familiar with the computer. or tech terms.  I am one of the dumbest ones on here.  I tried to search and identify my wifi  information by typing (pc diag ) in the search bar and no results came up. As I was going to try and redownload the driver.  I still have the windows 7 that was originally loaded.  I also have NO dates set to restore to.  can someone please help me out.  I am very disapointed with this toshiba computer.  PS it just took over 40 seconds to back space and delete a full sentence I decided not to say.

The warranty entitles you to complimentary phone support for the first 90 days of ownership.
If you bought the product in the U.S. directly from Apple (not from a reseller), you have 14 days from the date of delivery in which to exchange or return it for a refund. In other countries, the return policy may be different. If you bought from a reseller, its return policy applies.

I found this article some time ago when I was trying to help someone else in this same situation. This is a copy and paste from the website. The website is provided below for you to read before you try this.
    Plug your phone into iTunes
Click setup as a new device
Immediately unplug your phone from the computer
Give it about 30 seconds and iTunes will give a message (I don’t remember the specific, but regarding you unplugging the device and it not completing)
    Plug your phone back in
Viola! no restore occurred and you can access everything again
This computer has previously synced with an iPhone or another iOS device.

  • I have the latest version of itunes and a very new computer and a stable connection. Why does iTunes refuse to connect to the appointment store? I have tried the standard fixes but nothing helps

I have the latest version of iTunes. Whenever I click on the iTunes store section on iTunes the loading bar reaches half-way then stops. I can access my acount on my ipod touch however. i have tried reinstalling itunes but no help. I do have an internet filter but it is not doing any pop-ups(as it always does when it blocks content) so I am very sure that is not the problem.

    Many thanks.
With those symptoms, I'd try the following document:
Apple software on Windows: May see performance issues and blank iTunes Store
(If there's a SpeedBit LSP showing up in Autoruns, it's usually best to just uninstall your SpeedBit Video Accelerator.)

  • HT1338 Can anybody help with a very slow computer?

My MacBook Pro is running VERY slowly. I use primarily Word and have built up a huge number of files, like 500,000. Still  have plenty of memory, however.  Occasionally, I get the spinning color wheel when I'm on Word, the system freezes and I have to shut down.  How do I "defrag" or clean up the files?  Not sure which operating system, but it's a 2010 MacBook.

Can you tell us how much RAM  (Memory) you have? It's listed by clicking on the  in your title  bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.
We would also like to know what size hard drive you have and how much free space is on it.
If you click on your Hard drive icon (should be upper right hand corner of your screen), or the Finder in your Dock...when the window opens it says at the bottom how much Free Space you have on your drive.
If you go to the , click on About This Mac, click on More Info... in that window. The next window says how big your hard drive is under Hardware....click on Serial-ATA.....look under Capacity:
We need to know this cause if a hard drive is too full it slows things down and creates operational difficulties.

  • Very slow computer and getting worse

My computer seems to be bogging down. Commands result in the beach ball of doom more and more frequently and it rolls longer. I found a 15.9 var file in "private" which seems out of normal...maybe this is a problem? I would appreciate any advice or solution offered!

  • Desktop with cross bars and very slow computer

I have a iMac OSX 10.9.2 (13C64) early 2009 that became very slow to open and to shut and to process the adobe software. Also the screen of my mac is with cross bars. Already I cleaned with mackeeper, already I defrag, I noticed with the disk utility and all is well. I have over 400 GB available.
    Please help

Sounds like your display or GPU is failing? Back up any data you deem important and book an appointment at your nearest Apple Store or Apple Authorised Repair Centre asap. I would also get rid of mackeeper (and anything else that purports to do the same) plus whatever you've used to 'defrag' your mac. They ar no use to you at all and in reality most 'helper' applications just create problems as well as slowing your mac down.
Now what question do you have regarding OS X Lion Server?

  • HT4972 I am unable to update to ios5 because of a very old computer, how else can I update it?

My computer is so old that I am unable to download the latest ITunes update so I am unable to update my IPad to the IOS 5 update.  My IPad is about 2 years old and was originally purchased at Best Buy. I called Best Buy to see if they could download it for me if I brought it in to the store and they said they could for $30 but they wouldn't guarantee that no data would be lost. Is there any way else I can do the update?  I know the iOS 6 update is coming soon and I didn't know if I needed to have the ios5 update done first or can I get the ios6 update done without the ios5 update.  Please give me some advice?  Thank you!

Johnathan Burger is actually wrong. I updated to iOS 6 wirelessly with my phone today and when I went over my moms house today I let her know there was a new iOS as she just purchased a new iPad. I updated the iPad which already had 5 on it. After realizing I couldn't download iOS 6 wirelessly I plugged it into my computer and it forced my into downloading and installing 5.1 before letting me go to iOS 6. Not sure if you can bypass this somehow but simply upgrading from iTunes it forced me to do both.

  • Very important computer can die any second now!

ok I know this is off topic but it's one of my last options. I did a virus scan with mcafee online and i have atleast 25 viruses, problem is just before christmas my computer short circuit and killed my cdrom, so buying anti virus software isn't an option. I want to know any other sites that are reliable and trusted, or any site that has free virus removal tools. Thanks

alright, i downloaded a 15 day free trial of norton
2003 anti virus for 15 days, and it just finished
    scanning, repaired 133 files, 10 couldn't repair and1
couldn't delete. anyway 5 of the cannot repairedones
    are explorer.exe. one is iiscache.dll, 2 are
svchost32.exe and 3 are v32driver.bat, ok, so on the left of the norton anti virus, there's a
check mark, i can take it off. So i should take it off
    from explorer.exe right? so that explorer.exe doesn't
get quadrantined. what other programs should i not
quarantine that i listed at the top? or is it ok to
    quarantine the rest?are for real.
you come to a Java site and ask questions about your infected Windows machine. i was nice enough (along with some others) to give you some guidance. apparently you don't want to listen to our advice so why are you still here asking.
as i told you now at least twice explorer is a critical part of your os. so if it is infected and can't be fixed you have to replace it. if you simply un-quarantine it then you will be infected again so how is this going to fix anything.
for the third or fourth time now the best (read EASIEST) way for you to replace explorer is to re-install windows.
tough luck but that's the way it is.
if you don't like this answer may i suggest you find a site that discusses Windows problems. where they will most likely tell you the same thing.

  • Very SLOWWWWWW preformance from PhotoshopCS5

PLEASE tell me why people in the middle east cant download the ;-
Adobe Photoshop 12.0.1 update for Adobe Photoshop CS5
To  make Photoshop cs5 work faster????? I paid exactly the same amount of  money if not more than the rest of the users sitting in the UK and  America????
what the hell ....what am I suppose to do with it now ???use it as a image place holder???
Please tell me how I can make my Photoshop CS% work faster so I don't need to wait 5min to open a files.
    Thank you
    vanwebb

    It does some but.
A system essesment we need relivent information such as,
    CPU type /speed
    GPU speed/type
    OS verion
    drivers version.
From what you posted all i can tell is that you are using a 32 bit OS ( i can tell by the memory being 3.24 gb) and that you have enough drive space.
I can run you through the gambit of standard system checks such as,
Run a scan disk on your drives,
    Defrag you hard drives.
be sure all your drivers are up to date.
    Shut down all un-neccissary apps.
Be sure yoru virus scanner (if you have one) is not set to scan on open or make an exception for photoshop directory.
but other then that still need more information.
