Very specific spec questions

I am building my first pc and actually switching from Mac to pc.... 'oh the irony'. I intend to build my rig around around the
Intel Core i7-980X Extreme Edition Gulftown 3.33GHz 6 x 256KB L2 Cache 12MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Six-Core Desktop Processor BX80613I7980X
and nvidia geforce  gtx 480 or the quadro 1800
I would love to know why one graphics is better than the other.
I would like to stick a mobo with usb3.0 and ieee 1394b(fw800)
i would like at least 8gb(or12?) of fast ram
I cant find the mother that would work for this set up and I do not know enough about ram to decide?
can anyone give me some pointers
I am going to overclock
I will be using this computer to edit hd in cs5 and would like it to be super fast
I will also be taking full advantage of lightroom and photoshop and would love to be able to expand into cool special effect even though I do not know how to do that yet. I will be using cs5 and avid Xpress but NO gaming!
Thanks

dont make me laugh with Avid.
for the last 5-6 yrs they have been 18-24 months behind the curve on supported video cards.
i love that little "nag" screen that pops up saying something about this video card is not supported
and you click ok and then all is well. and it works perfectly
a Quadro 1800 is based on GTX 250. the 3800/4800 are based on GTX 260 the 5800 is based on the 285
Quadros are a complete waste of money aside from Auto Desk products. and then the cost factor rarely makes sense anyway.
when you can do 2 gaming cards in SLI. (wont work for Adobe or avid)
we are now on the Fermi 400 series. once again Avid is asleep at the wheel.
feel free to waster your money on Qaudro cards, aside from that you have a lot of research to do before you can even think about overclocking it... oh and Avid support wont think you are very "professional" doing that either...
Xrpress Pro is no longer supported either and wont install on Win 7 64
you need to upgrade to MC5

  • VERY SPECIFIC RAM QUESTION (not answered in prior topics)

I have a very specific RAM question. I've been pouring through the discussions and I see TONS of stuff about the proper way to upgrade RAM. I've done that before without incident, but here is my dilemma:
I'm using the 3.0Ghz, 8-core, MP currently with 8GB of the 667Mhz RAM (8x1GB). The memory is all matched from OWC and I have had no problems.
I just bought 16GB of new RAM from OWC (4x4GB).
I'm going to remove all 8 of the current 1GB DIMM's, and place two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser A, and two of the 4GB DIMM's in slots 1 & 2 on riser B. That will give me 16GB's in matched pairs on slots 1 & 2 of both riser A and B.
My question is this: Should I install two of my old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser A, and two of the old 1GB DIMM's in slots 3/4 of riser B (for a total of 20GB's)?
I've read that having all 8 slots filled = better performance but I'm not sure the mix of 4GB DIMM's and 1GB DIMM's.
    Any Thoughts?
    Thanks So Much,
    Tom

Optimally you want matched quads in each Riser. However, Bare Feats did some memory benchmarks that you might wish to read regarding memory performance versus different configurations. As for proper installation see the following:

  • Very Specific RAID Questions

I've read the RAID article twice now.  I still have some questions, which're quite specific:
    Let's consider the following situation:
C: SAMSUNG 850 Pro Series MZ-7KE256BW 2.5" 256GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
    for OS and Programs
    D: 3TB IntelliPower 64MB Cache, SATA 6.0Gb/s Hard Drive
    for Source Media and Projects
E: SAMSUNG 850 Pro Series MZ-7KE128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
    for Pagefile and Media Cache
F: SAMSUNG 850 Pro Series MZ-7KE128BW 2.5" 128GB SATA III 3-D Vertical Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)
    for Preview and Exports.
I'm planning on using this for exporting with Pr and Ae.
Here're my main questions.  These are quite specific given the circumstances, so articles haven't exactly answered my them:
When "Identical Drives" are needed for RAID arrays, does that include the usable disk space (such as 256GB or 128GB, etc.)?  Or does it just have to be the manufacturer/type of drive?
Would any type of RAID even be applicable given the above situation?  (In your opinion)
Which drives are best suited as HDDs and SSDs, in regards of FAST render times?
Which of the 4 drives should be connected with RAID, if they even should be at all?
Should the Source Media and Projects Drive be an HDD or SSD?  I have proper backups and all that, but SIZE MATTERS.  I have growing collections, so I need a lot of space on that drive.
Between what drives does the connection need to be the fastest?  All of them?  Or some more specific than others?  I fear that if an HDD is used as a Source Media and Project drive, it may significantly lower the speed of the entire machine, considering the other drives being SSDs.  However, I don't know.
If you need other hardware specifications, they can be found here:

When "Identical Drives" are needed for RAID arrays, does that include the usable disk space (such as 256GB or 128GB, etc.)?  Or does it just have to be the manufacturer/type of drive?
Yes. Each member disk in an array is treated as if it has the same size as the smallest one. If you have one 128 GB disk and a number of 512 GB disks, all those 512 GB disks will be treated as 128 GB disks and the rest of the space remains unused and inaccessible.
Would any type of RAID even be applicable given the above situation?  (In your opinion)
    No. Not enough identical drives.
Which drives are best suited as HDDs and SSDs, in regards of FAST render times?
Render for preview or render for export?
Which of the 4 drives should be connected with RAID, if they even should be at all?
None. There are not enough identical disks to warrant a raid. Even with 3 identical disks in a software raid5, the speed will be around the same as a single disk.
Should the Source Media and Projects Drive be an HDD or SSD?  I have proper backups and all that, but SIZE MATTERS.  I have growing collections, so I need a lot of space on that drive.
On the HDD, provided you can completely turn off the "IntelliPower" feature, since it is a stupid feature that reduces the HDD to a non-suitable green disk.
Between what drives does the connection need to be the fastest?  All of them?
    Yes.
The system looks nice from the specs, but the disk setup is still the weak link. It would be significantly faster if you could afford four Samsung 850 Pro SSD's of 500 GB each, in addition to the 256 GB OS disk, and configure them as two raid0 arrays and use the HDD as an export drive only.

  • Very specific question about iOS 7 and podcasts

I have a very specific question regarding the playback of podasts under iOS 7.
Right now, I've still got iOS 5.1.1 (iPhone 4S).
What I would like to have is a way to play an episode from a podcast that I have not yet finished, and when I double-click the ear-bud's middle button, then I would like to jump (skip) to the episode in the list, even if that episode is from a different podcast.
Right now, under iOS 5.1.1, I achieved that by creating a smart playlist in iTunes that collects all the episodes from all podcasts with a play count == 0.
This smart playlist is mirrored to the iPhone.
    It works very well.
It seems to me that something like that is not possible under iOS 6, so I skipped that.
My question now is whether I can acheive this under iOS 7.
I would be most grateful if some kind soul could shed some light on that for me.
    Best,
    Gabriel.

    Hi Larry,
Thanks very much for posting a reply.
I do absolutely intend to print a test copy first - but thanks to your advice at least know the spine is going to be ok!
I didn't realize that method would give me a nice landscape image of the unbound cover - I'd mistakenly remembered that it gave only one page at a time for front and back.
    Thanks for helping out.

  • I'm finally moving my photos from my PC to my MacBook Pro.  I have 8 years worth of photos organized into very specific albums.  Can I import the album structure directly into iPhoto or am I going to have to recreate everything in iPhoto?

I'm finally moving my photos from my PC to my MacBook Pro.  I have 8 years worth of photos organized into very specific albums.  Can I import the album structure directly into iPhoto or am I going to have to recreate everything in iPhoto?

If you want to duplicate your Folder Tree in iPhoto:
Start at the bottom of the hierarchy and drag a folder of images to the Album Heading in iPhoto. The pics will be imported and an Album of the same name created.
You can then create the Enclosing Folders in the iPhoto Window (File -> New Folder) and drag the Album to it. Folders can contain other Folders (Nested Folders) and Albums.
However, is your folder system date based? Then this form of organisation is a bit pointless in iPhoto when Smart Albums or the Calendar tool (Click on the wee magnifying glass in the Search Box) mean you can find the photos taken on any day, month or year at a click. With Smart Albums it's easy to find photos from specific range - say, June 3 to August 25, 2009 etc.
If your folder system is theme based - Xmas pics, Birthday pics etc, then you'll find Keywords are much more flexible, and can be used in conjunction with other criteria for making Smart Albums and searches.

  • Very High-Level Question on Approach (PI ccBPM or CE7.1?)

    All -
I have a very high-level question. I am not current on what would be the appropriate tool for my scenario.
    My scenario...
Transitioning business to use new sales order system.
This will be a phased roll-out, not Big Bang.
Company ordering website needs to send orders to one of two systems (new and old).
Assume order has a flag or some other value that is an indicator to which backend application it should be sent.
Each recieving application has an order insert web service, which would be in PI 7.1's ESR.
What we "envision" is that there would be some kind of fronting web/enterpise service that would read the "flag", then pass the message to the appropriate web service (and on to the appropriate application).
But I really am not clear how to architect this, if any rules "engines" (ccBPM or in CE 7.1) would be  or should be used.
    You opinions are welcome...
    Thank you for your time...

    Hi Eric,
It would be more elegant , if you can classify this orders logically and provide two user interfaces one for each type.
But coming back to your question , if you are planning to implement the process in BPM , you could utilize the capabilities of BRM for this purpose . BRM comes with CE 7.1 and works in conjunction with BPM.
    [BRM Help|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/nw-rules-management]
Once you want a complete roll out , you can remove the BRM  decision making.Logically this would solve the purpose. ccBPM is not really positioned for this approach. It can be used when you need to interact with multiple systems using different protocols.
Caveat : The use of BPM will restrict your UI to WebDynpro Java (atleast for now). The whole process needs to be built around webservices or RFCs.

  • Hi, I bought a new Mac Book Pro, very high spec, installed Lion and now the machine is slow, glitchy. how do i wipe it and put Leopard back on it? any help would be great..?

    Hi,
I bought a new Mac Book Pro a couple of months ago the new model, very high spec, i7 processor, 500g solid state drive, 8 gig of ram. all in all a very fast machine. however, i foolishly downloaded OS X Lion and as soon as i did i noticed a considerable difference in the machine basically its ground to a halt, its now slow glitchy programs shut down and crash. I'm new to Mac and in reminded of life in the world of Windows....! any suggestions should i wipe Lion off the machine and re install Leopard? any help would be appreciated..
    Liam

Surely you meant to say that there was nothing in Lion you would prefer over !10.6! - Lion is 10.7.
As for what might be sapping your machines juice - have you run Activity Monitor yet? I always enable 'All Processes' and sort it by %CPU usage if i want to know whats cooking.
In addition to the list Disk Activity might give a hint.
If you are quite low on available disk space it might also be that osx is constantly swapping - best to keep a few GB of free space for it to work with.

  • Very specific GMail attachment problem

I have a number of IP webcams (Y-Cam Black) that are setup to send an email to my GMail account containing a snapshot of any movement detected within sensor range at home.
The picture attachments view fine if I open the email from the GMail web client, but they show up as "This message has no content" in the mail application on my iPhone and if I open them up, they just contain a load of garbage that always begins with "ˇÿˇ‡JFIF" (Base64/MIME encoded jpeg?)
Image attachments are not a problem from other sources, and my IP camera images are viewable everywhere else, including from my ageing Windows Mobile device which I was hoping I could get rid of now I have my iPhone. I don't know whether this is caused at the phone end or the camera end, but the camera manufacturer has been less than helpful so far.
Has anybody else seen this with any other source? Is it a very specific mail formatting issue? I was kinda hoping it was a glitch in iPhone 2.0 but it still happens with 3.0 firmware.

    Hi QP
I'm sorry I don't actually know how to solve that problem, but for the technically minded out there, I've observed the same thing on my iPhone when my father-in-law sends me emails with attachments (his work uses Lotus Notes for emailing).

  • Although the "hint" for my administrative password is correct, my password is not accepted. I don't understand as the hint is very specific

I suddenly have a problem with my Macbook Pro.. Despite the fact that the "hint" for the administrative password is very specific AND correct, when I put in the password that I have always used, I am sent a message that it is incorrect.  This is the password used for updates and it's driving me crazy that it is not changed but not accepted.

Check that caps lock is not on. If it isn't, proceed as below.
If the user account is associated with an Apple ID, and you know that account password, the Apple ID can be used to reset your user account password.
Otherwise, boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens.
Select your boot volume if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Follow the prompts to reset the password. It's safest to choose a password that includes only the characters a-z, A-Z, and 0-9.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.
You should now be able to log in with the new password, but you won't be able to unlock the Keychain. If you've forgotten the Keychain password (which is ordinarily the same as your login password), there's no way to recover it. You’ll need to reset your keychain in the preferences of the Keychain Access application.

  • Very specific question involving GarageBand, Core Audio, and ext. sound.

I plan on purchasing a MacBook and using it for live music performances. Here is my question:
Using Tiger's Core Audio, would I be able to connect an external sound card, and, using GarageBand 3, play a click track (for timing) through the audio out on the book and run the rest of the tracks (the music for the audience) out of the external sound card?
I need to be able to play acoustic instruments live and keep in rhythm so when the rest of the music (beats, samples, etc) come in the instruments are all in the same time.
    Any information would help. Thanks.
    Planning on buying a MacBook.

Yes, I need 2 separate outputs. The guitarists will be listening to a click track for rhythm but I obviously don't want the audience to hear the clicks, just the music, live AND from the laptop.
And I could just play the audio back from iTunes, but I want real-time control on them. I guess my real question (which does not belong in this forum) is what software can I use that will allow multiple audio outputs, midi-triggering (midi loops AND static audio loops (i.e. mp3, etc), and let me play a midi keyboard with the desired plugins I want?
Does that exist? If so, just tell me what that is and I'll buy it. This is really perplexing me.

  • Very specific HD replacement questions.

Several months ago, I attempted to swap out the internal HD on my PB G4. At the time, I did not know enough about specific parts, and I ended up with an external IDE USB HD. It comes in handy, but it did not accomplish my goal of upgrading the internal HD on my PB G4.
Since then, I found the correct parts on http://www.ifixit.com
    The plot thickens...
I think that I found the correct parts on Amazon, which makes a big difference to me since I have an Amazon gift certificate, and the prices look more affordable.
Some of the specifics still confuse me a little, and I do not want to make another $100+ mistake, so I have come to this forum, seeking expert advice.
ifixit.com suggests the following HD, compatible with all Aluminum PowerBooks...$119.95
    http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/320-GB-5400-RPM-Western-Digital-ATA-Hard-Drive -New/IF107-069
I also want a FireWire enclosure for my 80 GB (currently) internal HD, which then becomes an external HD...$49.95
    http://www.ifixit.com/Apple-Parts/Firewire-ATA-Hard-Drive-Enclosure/IF107-072
So, then, I checked out Amazon, because I have a gift certificate.
They have this: Western Digital 320GB Scorpio Blue SATAII 5400RPM 2.5IN...$54.95
    http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-Scorpio-5400RPM-WD3200BEVT/dp/B0011U65F2/r ef=sr11?ie=UTF8&s=pc&qid=1272037997&sr=1-1
The SATA part confuses me. Previously, I have read that my PB G4 came with an ULTRA ATA HD.
Does the distinction between SATA and ULTRA ATA make a difference, compatibility-wise?
This enclosure appears to meet my needs...$24.99
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001Y15JPA/sr=1-3/qid=1272037408/ref=olpproductdetails?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1272037408&sr=1-3&seller=
Right now, it LOOKS like I can buy the same setup that I saw on ifixit.com through amazon.com for a lot less money. Part of me wonders if this deal is too good to be true, and I do not want to make the same mistake twice.
SO, I need a definite verdict on whether that Western Digital 320GB Scorpio Blue SATAII 5400RPM will work in my PB G4.
    Thanks,
    Ethan

    Welcome, Mrcircle.
Sorry, you cannot use SATA drives. It stands for Serial-ATA. The PB needs ATA or sometimes called IDE, or Parallel-ATA or PATA. The connectors are totally different.
Ditto on an external enclosure - it needs to be for ATA (PATA or IDE) to install your old drive.

  • Very specific question about cover colour

    Hi there,
I'm looking to print a medium, soft-backed book. Actually...quite a large run of the same design.
I'm using the basic Picturebook template.
The theme I'm going for is images on black pages. If I make the background colour of the front and back pages black - will the spine also be black?
The default colour setting for page backgrounds on this template is grey. I'm worried that the spine of the book may be grey - which would look terrible (I have to use this template as the other don't offer me the flexibility I need on the internal pages)
Has anybody got any experience that will assure me that the spine won't differ from the black background colour selected for front and back?
Many, many thanks for any advice.

  • Very specific question re: scrolling credits

I am using the "scrolling credits" theme to end my movie/slideshow. I can't seem to slow down the scroll and the credits are flying by. Any one know how to do this?

In addition to AppleMan's good advice, I thought I would provide an extra tip that may help with the Scrolling Credits title.
I'm not sure whether the tutorial AppleMan has linked to covers my tip, as the tutorials aren't playing for me at the moment. Maybe Apple is doing a bit of maintenance.
Here's my tip. If you have used one of the backgrounds provided in iMovie, to which you are applying a Scrolling Credits title, you may have to extend the duration of the background clip as well as extending the title duration. iMovie's behaviour here is not always consistent.
So, if the title has defaulted to, say, 4 seconds and you want, say, 20 seconds, you should firstly change the background clip to 20 seconds. To do this, either double-click on the background clip to bring up the Inspector, or click on the small gear icon on the background clip and select Clip Adjustments. From here you can change the duration of that clip. Finally, follow AppleMan's advice on how to change the duration of the actual title text. Ensure that this duration exactly matches the new background duration, unless you wish to add a transition at the end, in which case extend the background further.
One other tip. For double-clicking to work when editing, you need to set this feature in iMovie's Preferences. In the Preferences window there is an item "Double-click to" - with 2 choices, Edit or Play. Check the Edit box.
Hope this is useful. I've personally had trouble with "Scrolling Credits" timing and this is how I solved it. The same tip applies to the timing of the "Far Far Away" title. In fact that may have been where I first encountered the timing issue (can't recall).

  • New PB digital audio specs question.

I just looked at the specifications posted on the developer note for the new powerbooks. The digital audio in/out is very welcome. As I read through it, I found that the PB is listed as providing digital audio output via SPDIF AND AC3 formats. The question is, does anyone know if that AC3 output means its passing multichannel AC3 to be decoded outside? or is it a stereo AC3? Can anyone check? thanks... btw, the specs look good for digital in/out.

Thanks for your post, Machive 6.1. I had in fact read that article... in only states the following about AC3:
During playback of a 1KHz, full-scale sine wave (S/PDIF output format, 44.1KHz output sample rate, 24-bit sample depth, unless otherwise specified) the digital audio output has the following nominal specifications:
Jack Type: 3.5mm Analog/Optical Combo Jack
    Output Data Formats: S/PDIF (IEC60958-3), AC3
    Output Sample Rates: 32KHz, 44.1KHz, 48KHz, 64KHz, 88.2KHz, 96KHz
    Bits per Sample: 16 or 24 (S/PDIF),16 (AC3)
    Frequency Response: 20Hz – 20KHz, +/-0dB
    Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR): >130dB
    Total Harmonic Distortion + Noise (THD+N): <-130dB (0.00003%)
    Channel Separation: >130dB
It is not clear whether that is multichannel or stereo AC3 output...
    Anyone has tried it?
