Very stranae usb problem!! K8N NEO2-FX

Hello all
I am having some really strange usb problems
Things that work:
my sandisk memory stick usb reader fine,
most cheap mp3 players (Not all tho)
my sony camera lead works,
game pads fine,
crucial 512 flash pen fine
Things that dont work:
my sons sandisk usb card reader microSD wont work
Cosair 4 gb wont work(that Pi**ed me off).
Nokia 6300,Samsung J600,Samsung D900I,Nokia 5300.
When i put things in usb ports onboard or case it asks for the driver for the device. Then says there is a problem with the install and the device can be used.
I have re-wired the case as per case and MB manuals,i flashed to 1.D.Have tried all the nforce drivers out there!!Its just so random why will it use some usb thing and not others??
Thanks in advance to any and all help given.

  • Boot problems - K8N Neo2 Platinum

I just got an MSI K8N Neo2 Plat. edition to replace my busted Asus A8V, and already I ran into some intriguing problems:
-It POSTs alright, but when it attempts to load the xp bootscreen, it justs reboots
-When I put the xp install cd in and rebooted, it won't read and go to xp setup.
I tried swapping the memories around and used different SATA connectors but nothing works.....help?

I tried for days to get a WD Caviar 160 to work as a boot drive with the same board and had the same problems as you.  I eventually RMA'd the Caviar and replaced it with a Maxtor 200gb DiamondMax 10 and Windows installed just fine.
Some others have also reported the same problems with smaller capacity SATA drives (80-160), but no problems at all with 200gb drives.  Your problem may or may not be the same but if you can try another SATA drive that might save you some considerable headaches.

  • Very slow USB on K8N SLI Platinum & Windows XP SP2

    Hi!
I.e. deleting a folder with small 6000 files (all together they have ~50MB) from USB device lasts according to Windows about 100 minutes.
I've got K8N SLI Platinum with BIOS version 3.70, Windows XP SP2 with all updates and some recent nVidia nForce driver (however I'm not sure which version exactly).
In "Device manager" it looks like the USB driver is from Microsoft from year 2001. Are there some new drivers or something that can help to increase USB performance?
    Thanks in advance

Usb's as stick say can't be compared to drives attached to a ide controller.
But you can check to make sure it's running at 2.0 speed like this.
If you look in device manager - on the view on menu - select "view devices by connection" .
Then expand the tree down to USB Enhanced (EHCI) and see if the "disk" is attected to this controller.
If it is you running usb2.0.
Here you see Verbatim Stor'n Go Usb 2.0 thumbdrive attached to the Standard Enhanced EHCI Controller (Usb 2.0)
The other circle shows a bluetooth device runnings as usb 1.1 and attached to the Standard OHCD Controller (Usb 1.1)
An other thing that slows it down is that cache is disabled ("optimized for quick removal") .

  • Palm Pilot USB Sync (K8N Neo2 Platinum)

I cannot get my Palm Tungsten E to reliably HotSync with my new computer (see spec). I've tried USB ports on both the front panel, D-connector, and motherboard back panel connector. During a sync, the desktop HotSync program just dies and I have to reboot my Palm to get it out of the sync state (cancel doesn't work). If I check the Hot Sync log I invariably see this:
    Files\palmOne\TungstB\Backup\psysLaunchDB.PDB
    System synchronization failed
    Protocol Error: Unknown error.  (4001)
HotSync Error: Connection is lost  (6410)
If I attempt a subsequent HotSync after a failure it always works.
I have other USB peripherals that work just fine.
I'm thinking about turning off USB 2.0 support in the bios because my old computer only had USB 1.0 and it always worked fine......????
I've got the latest Palm Desktop and Palm HotSync stuff. Anyone else see this? I'm gonna go bug Palm about it and check their forums too. Will report back if I find anything.
    Thanks.

  • K8N neo2: 227FSB? That's all i can get?!?

okay, i was overclocked at 233fsb when i first got the rig together, now i can only get 227fsb. Not a huge difference but i was hoping to hit 2.4 since ive read about other peoples successes with the setup very ssimilar to mine.
    k8n neo2 platnm
    amd64 3200
    2x512 corsair xms pc3200
    2xmaxtor sata drives raid 0
    xp90 h/s
    tornado 92mm fan 119 cfm!!
    ati 9800xt
    Hercules PSU 400W bios 1.4
    SP2
Now the issue is it seems that i have hit a low ceiling compared with other similar setups, even in lower stock cpus like the amd64 3000 i have seen hit 2.5 with a water chilled h/s. im not looking for that but i think i can squeez out some more here from what i have read.
The problem is i dont know how to continue overclocking this machine. So far i have overclocked the FSB (227fsb x 10 = 2270) in the bios and oced the timings of the memory from 2T auto-auto-auto to 1T 2.5-3-3-8. And lastly i upped the voltages in the bios and in the core center.
however, when i set the vcore in the bios like say 1.5, the core center in windows only registers 1.42 -1.47 and fluctuates between those voltages.  If i up the voltage in the bios more the vcore will continue to rise, but not at the bios's numbers. The psu is posting lower numbers than i am prescribing in the bios.
So, is it the PSU or is this normal? Is this hampering me in getting a higher overclock becuase of these slight flucuations? Is that normal?
Lastly,  a freind of mine was trying to explain to me about changing the ratios of cpu:fsb, and if my board had the capability of doing so. I didnt see it anywhere in the bios so i am assuming not. Aside from not understanding how lowering the cpu or fsb and getting a better perfomance as a result out of the machine (im totally lost here) I want to know if i am overlooking anything else i can do to make this machine run faster, as we all are. I'm wondering if there is anything else i can do here. What am i missing?

put fsb to smthn like 240 and then go to dim settings and put ddr160 instead of ddr200... that is what others refer to about fsb:ram ratio...
That way ur cpu will run at fsb 245mhz while memory will only run at about 205mhz... which still its over its normal 200mhz speed (frequency) also put up the vmem voltage to about 2.6 at start...
    good luck
p.s. also do not use Core Center coz it sux... do all this in BIOS..

  • K8N Neo2 + Maxtor DiamondMax 10 (SATA) problems!

    hello.
i wanted to know, if anyone knows a working solution for the problem that the nforce3 chipset / nvidia sata controller / mobo bios or just (some?) k8n neo2 mobos causes the system to freeze while booting when a maxtor diamondmax 10 is installed?
for anyone who still has problems: a temporary solution for 1-drive-users is to plug the drive to the sata4 port (right between the agp and the cpu socket), instead of plugging it to sata1, which would be the correct procedure under ordinary circumstances though.
i found out that my own system was highly unstable as long as i connected the drive to one of the first two sata ports. the other ones worked better. is the problem limited to sata 1/2 on everyone's board? if not, it would be RMA-able.
but there is another thing besides the instability of these expensive pieces of trash (sorry, no other hard drive and mobo has given me a harder time yet!) that bothers me more:
why is my maxtor diamondmax 10 6b300s0 so noisy? on idle it runs very smooth and is quiet, but under heavy load it almost roars as loud as my old u2w-scsi drives i had back in 1995. could it be that windows or the sata controller does not turn on the cache?
i hope, somebody can share his experience.
    wan-hi

I've got the neo2 and 2 Diamondmax 10 Maxtors in RAID1. I've had loads of trouble as well... Today is my first day without a freeze and hard reboot needed. I started building (slowly mind you) about 3 weeks ago.
If this is actually stable now, perhaps you can try a similar setup. All these steps had frequent hangs and re-attempts.. I got through in the end tho. (Doesn't instill confidence that you have a stable build tho!!)
I have the 2 drives on SATA 3,4
All SATA BIOS settings are enabled (inc port 1,2 settings)
I used the 2 RAID drivers on the supplied floppy disk (same revisions as on the website currently)
I installed WinXP with service Pack 1 built in (is that what people mean when they say a streamlined XP install?)
After updating all the motherboard drivers etc, I installed Service Pack 2. With SP2 I had frequent unrepeatable hangs, but cpu burn type programs and games wouldn't trigger it.
Only office type work/browsing seemed to kill it.
I switched to a USB mouse from PS2, and that seemed to help.
Last thing I tried was uninstalling SP2 and it's lasted all day now. Longest strtech previously was 3,4 hours of intermittent use.
I agree with you about the noisy Maxtors though.. I had a Seagate Barracuda before and that was really silent. These don't whine at all but clatter when seeking.
Apparently with the Diamondmax 9's you could use a Maxtor utility to quieten (slow) the seeks, and a IBM/Hitachi util also worked.
I can't get either to work cos the 10's are SATA only drives. Maxtor util only works with IDE (or perhaps SATA non RAID), and IBM just fails to see them.. shame. I think the Maxtor util might work with some other, older SATA controllers... have to track someone down with a compatible setup who doesn't mind me carving up their machine. Actually haven't tried adjusting when the drives aren't RAIDed.. hmmm.

  • K8N Neo2, wierd problems

Hey all, I am new here
I looked through all the post but did not find anything related to my problem.
I have had  my rig almost a month without any problems but all of a sudden the computer just rebooted itself right in the middle of a simple (not 3d) game. It just kept rebooting after it reached the Windows logo and I would get error message like "IRQ was not less or equal" and the great Windows has stop your computer because of hardware failer, system will shut down. I tried to do a restore but XP could not find the HD, when I tried to run XP from CD it would not load due to hardware failer and I could not get into safe mode. Sometimes in the BIOs the BIOs would be corrubted, get those greek letters and things, just sometimes.
I stripped the thing down to just barebones, CPU, ram, vid and cleared cmos.
I first determined that the onboard IDE controller was bad, when I moved my HD to the PCI IDE controller the errors changed but XP kept restarting, but it now gave me a NT loader error which took me to the ram.
I pulled the ram and tried 1 stick at a time, turned out that 1 of the 512MB modules went bad, with that the computer started up and seemed to run fine. I connected everything back up and things still ran fine, just could not use the onboard IDE controller as Windows would not pick anything up on it. The next day I work on it some more, put the HD back onto the onboard IDE controller and it worked again.
But then my PS2 mouse port went dead, switched back to my USB and all seems well so far.
I used a VOM and checked the 3.3, 5 and 12 volt rails, all were within specs, no drops even under a stress test, CPU temps are fine.
Anyone else have seen anything like this
I have already received a RMA from Newegg on the MB but before I send it back I want to see if there is a solution to my problem.
My gut feeling tells me P/S but it test good. Been running 2 days now without any problems but I am worried that it may happen again.
My other thought is that maybe a zener diode, cap or voltage regulator on the MB may be going bad.
Any one have an idea about this, should I just send it back and get another MB or is this a growing MSI problem
    Thanks for any input.
    I have the following:
Windows XP home with SP2, fresh install and all updates
K8N Neo2 nForce3 Ultra, stock settings right now, BIO updated to 1.B0
    64 3500+ Venice, stock settings
1 Gig PATRIOT memory, 2*512MB running dual channel settings all auto/ stock
    420W Vantec P/S, 420a
    ATI 9550
    80 Gig WD
    20 Gig WD
    Sony CD-RW
    52x CD-Rom
PCI SiI 0680 Ultra 133 Medley ATA raid controller: Running slave HD and CD-rom on it, no raid setup

    JayBee;
I used the VOM whilel running the stress test with everything hooked up, even played intense 3d games with the VOM connected back-probing the pins 1,2 and 11 (orange wires) of the MB power connector for the 3.3 volt rail and then back-probing the molex cable for my 5 and 12 volt rails.
I cleared the cmos by by pulling the P/S cable then turning on the P/S to discharge caps, after this i used the "clear cmos" jumper and then went back in and set everything bak up.
As I have said, even with just a basic setup, CPU, 1 stick of ram and vid I still got the problems, it wasn't until I moved my C:\ HD to the PCI IDE controller and the one bad stick of ram that I could get XP to start up.
I moved the C;\ drive back to the onboard IDE and again XP would not load, the next day I tried it again and all of a sudden the onboard IDE were working again. The very next day while playing my PS2 mouse went dead, plugged my USB mouse in and have been playing ever since. Very wierd stuff, like a bad diode gate or somthing, don't really know.

  • Feedback on USB mouse w/K8N Neo2 "locking up"

I am interested in finding out if "some" of the issues with the USB mice freezing on the K8N Neo2 boards are resolved, or was my case an isolated incidence.
I will Cut and Paste my "fix" to my issue, so please report if this works for you as well:
I haven't had one single USB mouse lockup in 3 days so I declare what I've done as a fix for me. This is more than likely not going to be the case for the whole USB FREEZING fiasco with the mobo, but again, I reiterate, IT WORKED FOR ME.
I noticed that when powering my system up that the red optical light was illuminating, so I knew my hardware was recognizing the mouse, it was when Windows began to go to the desktop that the optical light would disappear and the mouse would cease to function. I would have to unplug the mouse from the USB port in the back of tower and re-plug it back in.........but even then, after being in Windows for any length of time, the mouse would cease to function noted by the absence of the red optical light and of course the lack of movement by the cursor. This was happening VERY frequently.........it seemed moreso on "cold boots" which was misleading in my process of elimination, as this would signify a potential hardware issue, but the problem persisted after boot on a warm system.
    Therefore I began my quest.
I use WinXP Pro and this happens with both service packs(SP1 and SP2).
I went to My Computer---->Properties----->Hardware----->Device Manager----->Universal Serial Bus Controllers----->(open this up by clicking on the +)
I have 3 USB Root Hub listings so I double clicked each one of them and Disabled(unchecked) under the PowerManagement Tab the box that defaults with a check in it that states "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
So far ~72hrs without another USB mouse issue.
Please report if this also works for you.........thanx.

I'm glad to hear that it works for you.  Hopefully others will find some "relief" in this nagging issue as well.  Again, for me, when reformatting and installing either service pack, once the USB 2.0 drivers are loaded.....if I do not uncheck the box as mentioned in the initial post.....it will lock up again......it is only after the box is unchecked that the problem is resolved.

I think its very important to remember what we are here for---to solve problems. If you have problems with a manufacturer, take the problem to them or their site. This is a forum of users, not owners or manufacturers or MSI workers. I think alot of people here are under the assumption that this site is by MSI. It is not.
My deepest apologies to this community.  Although I do not look for excuses, but 3 builds, more down time than up, is frustrating........I apologize.

  • Dual DDR problem with K8N Neo2 Platinium.

    Hi all,
    I have a new K8N Neo2 Platinium since last week. My configuration is : AMD 64 Venice 3000+, 2 x 256 MB Kingston Value RAM (KVR400X64C25/256) 160GB Seagate SATA, MSI FX5700 VTD 256MB etc...
The problem is I cannot work them in dual DDR mode! But they works in single mode very good. I know that my RAM pairs are not in vendor list! But I love my RAMs..They are CL2.5 and I think they are valuable...
    So what can I do?

Deathstalker , lots of value kinston ram is qualified .
Just take a look at NF4 testreport:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/html/products/mainboard/testreport_pdf/7125/memory.pdf
And what you say about value ram vs non jedec spec OC ram is often quite the opposite as valueram follows the jedec spec
and is a more "hit" than miss with most motherboards contra what OC ram is .
Dxvideo , make sure you use memory slot 1+2 as said, also try booting to bios with one stick and save cas as 3.0
then install second module . Se if it helps with looser cas value .They also follow jedec SSTL 2.5v standard
but is verified by vendor -/+ 0.25v so you can also set voltage manually to 2.6v (or more) to help them out .
If it worked in dual chl on NF2 doesn't neccesary mean they will on A64 system as this memory controller is more picky than
the external memory controller on NF2 boards.

  • K8N Neo2 Problems

    Spec:
    K8N Neo2 (latest bios)
    FX-53
    MSI 6800 Ultra
    1024 3200c2pro ram
    120gig seagate
    dvdrom
    TT 480watt PSU
    NOTHING OVERCLOCKED
I am currently having problems with a system that isn't working to well, everything passes, with flying colours up untill i get to the Video tests (3dmark01/03), it pauses every now and then and then continues as though it didn't just pause. On top of that the nvida drivers come up often saying that there isn't enough power for the vid card so we're underclocking it to protect it.
    Tested:
Cpu passes prime for 48 hours
Memory Passes goldmem and mem86 36 hours
    HDD passes.
The video card, passes fine in another system, no problems with power or pausing in 3dmark 24 hours
I've tried 4 PSUs on it.. 480 thermaltake, 430 antec, 480 top power, its currently got an antec 550watter in it.
    I am stumped.
Anyone got any suggestions in there, i am already on the 2nd motherboard (Damn gigabyte and there ram incompatbilitys.) I am getting realy annoyed and don't want to swap boards again, especialy when this system is a customers and its in a shitty thermaltake case :D
    cheers all
    Armers

Enter the bios and press shif+f2 and then Alt+f3 (if you are using multimedia keyboard make sure the 'f-lock' is enabled) this opens up extra setting in the bios.
Now enter Cell and you will notice NV/ATI....make sure that is disabled, it is on 'auto' by default.
This options allows auto overclock the card and caused similar problems for lots of users of MSI Neo2.
In terms of power failure, are you connect both molex connectors directly from the psu, also the antec+thermaltake psus have low rails on +12V. I would suggest to upgrade to a OCZ 520W or wait for a 600W, i also read very postive reviews on the Ultra-X 500W.

  • News - BIG PROBLEM - MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum - DOES NOT POWER!!!

    Hi to everyone.
I'm a proudly owner of a MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum that in one year gave me no problem until yesterday morning.
I used the computer in the night before and when I finished I turned it off and I went to bed.
Yesterday morning I found the power led blinking (like if the system was in standby), and there was no way to turn the PC on.
I even took off the battery for more than 12 hours and I left only minimal components installed:
the video card (Gainward GeForce 6800),
    the psu (Antec TruePower 550W),
    1 x 512 MB Ram Crucial Ballistix,
and I checked them into another computer and they work perfectly.
I tried shorting the MB power switch pins with a screwdriver and I've even tried to power on the system without the Memory or the Video Card... I've tried everything that came across my mind with no efforts!!!!
Every time I give power to the MB appens only that the power led starts blinking, but pressing the button the PC doesn't turn on.
PLEASE HELP ME... I really don't know what else to do!!!
    Thanks,
    Alberto

    Hi thanks for the answers.
I do have a D-Bracket, but my problem is not that the system does not boot or does not post... my system DOES NOT POWER ON (!!!!), so d-bracket is useless!
When I plug the system power    the only thing that happens is that the power led starts blinking (with the system still in soft-off), and if I press the power switch button nothing happens!
I've the bios for 7025 v1.8 and the settings where for OFF on power-loss ond pressing the button (can't rememeber if it was more than 4 sec) was meant to turn off the computer, but considering that I un-powered the pc more than once without the MB battery the settings should be factory default by now.
I went through the Windows-XP shut-down system, and i could not be an electrical problem as I always used the PC with a pretty good UPS unit.
Right now these are the full specs of my sytem:
    - MB MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum nForce3 Ultra
    - GAINWARD 6800 2600 GLH 256 MB Ram
    - PSU Antec TruPower 550 W
    - CPU AMD64 3500+ core Winchester @11*210 Mhz (this cpu has never overclocked very well)
    - HEATSINK Thermalright XP-90 with a 12 Cm Enermax Fan (CPU temp in always below 55 °C when stressed)
    - 1 x 512 Mb RAM Crucial Ballistix DDR400 optimized for  MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
I left only these things inside my computer in the hope that it would turn on... it did not work. I tested each component but the MB, and they work perfectly.
    Again...
Thanks for you efforts, any help will be appreciated.
    Alberto.
All parts have been tested: CPU/RAM/GFX/PSU/HD/DVD,  just not the MOBO ?
Checked if the MOBO is shorting in the case ?
Have you tried using the reset switch as power, on/off switch ?  I've seen before when the power switch stops working (lose/bad wire busted spring) after swapping  reset to power, then the system turned on. Worth a try, as sending it back to USA won't be cheap. If its over 1 year old it mite not be covered by the re-seller and or MSI. Best to check this out as law and warranty is different from country to country.
    Good Luck

  • K8N Neo2-F Problems all around

I currently run a MSI K8N Neo2-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra ATX AMD 64 with an AMD 64 3200+ processor, and lately I have been getting random power issues.
When I use a high-end gaming application, which is my primary function on the computer, I get random BSODs after a very short time.  The only one that continues to work is World of Warcraft - weird eh?  Every other game I play is having BSODs.  Also, my keyboard PS/2 port as well as my USB ports are randomly dying - I have to unplug and replug my mouse and/or keyboard to get it to work again.
Bought a brand new power supply this week, and it didn't change a thing.  Gave me a couple more FPS in WoW, so I know the PSU was a good choice.
Is this an RMA issue?  And if so, is it possible to obtain a new motherboard without sending this one back?  It'd be a major pain to be without a main board for that much time.

Welcome to the forum.  In order to best help you we need to know exactly what is in your system; see my signature for what is required.  In fact, spend a few minutes creating a signature so we can see at a glance what you have.
Ensure you list make/model of old/new psu inc max amps on +12v rail.
Run memtest - link in my signature.
Download cpu-z to check memory timings.  Could try increasing vdimm a notch.
Could be other factors of course but unless we know what you have .......................

What do you think of the Antec 480 TruBlu?
As mentioned you should look on how many AMPS the PSU delivers on the +12v rail.
And as we can see here it has 22 amps on the +12v rail. Not too little but then again not much. I see no reason why you should go with a more expensive Antec over the Tagan.
    Comparing Antec Trueblue with Tagan:
    Tagan  480W
    +3.3v 28 amps
    +5v    48 amps
    +12v  28 amps
    Antec TrueBlue
    +3.3v 30 amps
    +5v    38 amps
    +12v  22 amps
    Tagan Reviews:
    Hexus.net
    Short-Media
Not to mention, it's under 20db most of the time

  • K8N Neo2-FX USB2.0 problem

I recently bought a computer with a K8N Neo2-FX motherboard. I put it all togheter and installed Windows XP with SP2
and everything seemed to work fine until I tried connecting a USB2.0-device and I got the message that the device was
connected to a port which only supported USB1.1.
I've tried to install both SP1 and SP2, new versions of nForce3 System Drivers and VIA4-in-1 without and progress.
Anyone know how to solve this??
    My system:
    K8N Neo2-FX Motherboard
    AMD Ahtlon64, 3200 Mhz
    4 x 512 MB RAM
XFX Geforce FX5500, 128 MB Ram
    Seagate 200 GB Harddrive

USB issues are always such a pain
Here's a link to some pretty useful information on troubleshooting USB problems.  Hope this helps bro.
