VERY strange behavior - HELP!

I don't know if anyone can help, but I have had some VERY strange Powerbook this afternoon while doing some Word processing. I was doing a quick search on the internet, when web pages would not load and applications became EXTREMELY SLOW. It was almost as if I had lost my internet connection, but everything was fully connected and fine. Anything action that I took brought up the spinning pinwheel of death. After force quitting all of my apps. and trying to restart, I continued to get the spinning wheel. After leaving the PB for nearly five minutes, the wheel was still spinning and restart did not happen.
I finally held down the power button until it shut down. After restart, I repaired permissions and received the following, which I thought was strange:
Disk Utility started.
Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”
Determining correct file permissions.
parent directory ./Users/Shared/SC Info does not exist
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./Library/Widgets. New permissions are 16877
Permissions differ on ./private/var/log/secure.log, should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r-----
Owner and group corrected on ./private/var/log/secure.log
Permissions corrected on ./private/var/log/secure.log
We are using special permissions for the file or directory ./usr/lib/php/build/acinclude.m4. New permissions are 33060
I understand the "special permissions" is due to the latest security update, but the secure.log concerns me. Any ideas?
Here is part of the system log as well. Any help would be much appreciated. Based on the sys.log towards the bottom, it almost looks as if there was some kind of attempted security breech on the system?
Thanks,
Joe B

  • Very Very Strange Problem - Help

    I own a MacBook Pro 17 inch. I connect it to a 30" Cinema Display. It has been working great for the past 6 months. Few days ago, I was doing a presentation using a flat screen which went fine. A day later, When I tried to connect the MacBook pro back to my cinema display, it just did not work. The display is not detected at all. I first thought maybe the connector was not damaged but the dosplay worked fine with another computer. I then though maybe the diplay out in my computer was damaged, but my MacBook works ok wiht other screens and projectors. The strange thing is that there is absoultely no communicatio between this specifc Macbook pro and this 30" inch Cinema display. Very strnage. Appreciate your help.

    Try resetting PRAM…

  • Hibernate-very strange problem, help please

    Hi, i got such a strange problem that im sure you ll think im doin crazy talk :) , i dont see why this would happen at all, i have a class called "Package", mapped to a table "package". whenever i do a query on this table using hibernate, even the simplest "find all" kinda of query, hibernate does update on the table b4 doin the query! even more weird, it does the update when the first query on this table happens, it deletes all values of a column (yes only this column); then if i do the same query again, no update at all. however if now i mannuall add those missing values, it does the update again and deletes them! sry its confusing, heres my code and more of wat i done:
    The mapping Package.hbm.xml
    <hibernate-mapping package="tuition.bo">
    <class name="Package" table="package">
    <id name="id" column="study_package_id" type="long">
    <generator class="sequence"/>
    </id>
    <property name="name" column="name" not-null="true"/>
    <property name="satTiming" column="sat_timing" not-null="false"/>
    <property name="satSubjects" column="sat_subjects" not-null="false"/>
    <property name="sunTiming" column="sun_timing" not-null="false"/>
    <property name="sunSubjects" column="sun_subjects" not-null="false"/>
    <set name="classes" inverse="true" cascade="delete-orphan" lazy="true">
    <key column="package_id"/>
    <one-to-many class="Class"/>
    </set>
    </class>
    </hibernate-mapping>
    For example initialy i populated database using hibernate, like this:
    package_id, name, sat_timing, sat_subjects, sun_timing, sun_subjects
    1 no.1 9-12 business 9-12 law
    2 no.2 9-11 business 9-11 law
    Then after i populated this database, i did this query:
    <b>List res=getHibernateTemplate().find("FROM Package");</b>
    and you can see the log file as such: (excerpt)

    as you can see, it does update and changed table field values to this:
    package_id, name, sat_timing, sat_subjects, sun_timing, sun_subjects
    1 no.1 business law
    2 no.2 business law
    ---------- all tiimings are gone. and now if i re-do the same query, there are NO UPDATE operations....howver if i add some values to sat_timing, sun_timing, and re-do the query, very surprisingly, i saw those update operations which delete all timing values again!
    im totally lost... i havent changed any config, this doenst happen to my other classes at all but just this one.... any ideas please! even some thought of what may caused this would be great help! thank you!

    well i got the setters wrong.... being so stupid i am... sry for creating such a long and massy thread.

  • PS CS3 very strange behaviors (won't open only some jpegs)

    I have been having weird problems with PS CS3 all week. I finally resorted to wiping out my login identy for Windows and making a new one and then later of removing all adobe products and then resinstalling them. Still it is doing weird stuff.
    I have two folders of jpegs open. One I can drag into PS and they open find. I can also use the open dialog box and it works great. LR will open anything into PS. Except thsi one folder. It will not recognize any files in this folder. I get the message
    Could not complete your request because of a program error.
    I understand that the techs at Adobe don't care about a set of software that is a couple of cycles back and rarely take the time to look at any concerns with it, as my questions on this forum are rarely resolved and I get help on other sites much quicker, but I am wondering if any PS users out there have encoutnered this kind of ridiculous behavior that seems at the least improbably if not impossible to explain.
    XP pro on a self built intel motherboard with P4 processor
    (lots of plugins - NIK, OnONe etc)

    Thank you for your response Noel. I was under the impression that there were admin that were actual Adobe employees present. My mistake.
    These files will open in any number of other programs - Windows file viewer, Nero, etc.
    There were exported via lightroom and saved as SRGB jpegs to be uploaded onto a webserver. I don't use camera raw (via PS or Bridge) all that often, and never with these particular files.

  • DriverManager.getConnection() : very strange behavior

    I am currently developping a SWING application generated with NetBeans 6.1 which connects to either a MySQL DB or a PostgresSQL DB, both hosted by a Linux server.
    The application runs just FINE on Solaris/SPARC, Solaris/x86 and Linux/x86.
    The problems come with Windows/x86 : the call to DriverManager.getConnection() just stalls, no error, no timeout, no exception.
    After investigating a little bit more I found some "funny" behaviors that I submit here for comments:
    The drivers loaded since the main() function using:
    Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
    Class.forName("org.postgresql.Driver");
    The application gets connected to the DB with the following connection code :
    try {
    DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:mysql://192.168.2.3:3306/ZEDB", "user", "pwd" );
    DriverManager.getConnection( "jdbc:postgresql://192.168.2.3:5432/ZEDB", "user", "pwd" );
    catch (Exception x) {  [...] }
    And the results are (tried with JDK 5u16 and JDK 6u7)
    - On Windows :
    -> OK in a console Application
    -> OK in a Swing/AWT Application if the connection code is in the main function
    -> NOK in a Swing/AWT Application if the connection code is placed anywhere within a SWING Form AND server is remote,
    -> Last case if OK if server is "localhost" (tested only with MySQL -for Windows- however ).
    - On Linux or Solaris : OK on any case
    Any idea ?
    - Dom

    Dom- wrote:
    I made at first the same assumption as you did.
    But when I put the "connecting code" into the static main() function - without changing anything else - then it worked. So I can't believe that it is due to any Windows firewalling rules as the rest doesn't change when the code changes place.When it is impossible then it means your assumptions are wrong.
    Hard to say what your assumptions are in this case. But some possibilities. There can be countless others.
    1. You are not running the code that you think you are.
    2. It is not blocking where you think it is.
    And I obviously need to run that connecting code within Swing forms as it is the user who decides which DB to use and what the credentials are...
    I can understand that I have a fundamental design issue. But going again through the whole wizard of Netbeans with a very basic Swing application, I step already on this misbehavior: OK from "static main()", NOK from "App.startup()".Note that myself I didn't say you had a design issue. I don't do GUIs so I certainly don't know how to do them correctly. But I do know that if you have blocking code and you are not careful then it will block the GUI and make it non-responsive to the user.

  • Very strange behavior with to_date and format 'yddd' after 31/12/2009

    Hi, I have the following PL/SQL code which retrieve a date from a production batch code as fallow:
    DECLARE
    dtmDateFabric DATE;
    BEGIN
    -- on teste si l'on peut reconstituer la date fabric à partir du code lot
    dtmDateFabric := TO_DATE ('9348', 'yddd');
    DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line ('dtmdatefabric ' || dtmDateFabric);
    END;
    batch code is constitued like this: YDDD year of production and day number in year.
    This code was perfectly working before 2010 and it used to return December 14, 2009.
    And now the same code returns December 14, 2019.
    And I can't use 'rddd' as format.
    Any idea to resolve this issue ?
    Thank's for help.
    Olivier

    It's not strange at all, we are in 2010 now, so if don't specify the decade, century and millennium it takes the current: 2 (millennium) 0(century) 1(decade) and your year becomes 2019...
    You have to add a byte to your year format to specify the decade:
    SQL> DECLARE
      2  dtmDateFabric DATE;
      3  BEGIN
      4  -- on teste si l'on peut reconstituer la date fabric à partir du code lot
      5  dtmDateFabric := TO_DATE ('09348', 'yyddd');
      6  DBMS_OUTPUT.put_line ('dtmdatefabric ' || dtmDateFabric);
      7  END;
      8  /
    dtmdatefabric 14-12-2009 00:00:00
    Procedura PL/SQL completata correttamente.And you'll be ok untill 2099...

  • Lightroom can't find file - very strange behavior

    I really do like working with Lightroom (2.4), even though it has several annoying characteristics (including its speed relative to Lightroom 1). But I haven't encountered anything that is as strange as this:
    I sometimes will open a collection intending to select an image in order to print it, or edit it, and the intended image bears a banner announcing that "The file named "[name of image/file]" is offline or missing." I right click on the image and select "Show in Finder" and I get an alert box that says, "The photo '[name of file]' could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" Below that it says, "Previous location: ..."
    ("Previous location:" is followed by the original path to the file.)
    Up to this point, what I have described is no different than a missing file problem described here by other users. I hope the rest of this isn't too confusing; please bear with me.
    If I click the "Locate" button in that alert box, I am taken to a folder somewhere in the middle of the hierarchy described in "Previous location." If I do a search for the named file (via my iMac's file search function), I find that the actual file is in the folder shown at the end of the folder hierarchy, exactly where Lightroom says it last found it. But Lightroom won't take me all the way there.
    On closer inspection, I see that the folder (as shown in "Previous location" not the actual folder) that FOLLOWS the folder to which "Locate" takes me (this is an actual example from today) is called "desktop 12:09" -- but no such name could have been used, colons not being permitted in file names. I follow the path shown in the alert box as I navigate through the actual folders. When I get to the folder one level up from "desktop 12:09" (that is, the folder to which "Locate" will take me - and yes, I could have started there, but chose to follow the entire path for purely academic reasons), I see that there is a folder called "desktop 12/9". Inside that folder is the next folder shown in the hierarchy previously referred to.
    Further down in the hierarchy there are two more folders with colons rather than slashes in their names, but of course the actual folders are named with slashes. Lightroom appears to have substituted the colons for the slashes, for some reason (or lack of reason) and now can't find the file.
    I did navigate down (through Lightroom) to find the original, but had to copy the path into a text editor so I could follow it. Alas, this particular file was located many layers down. Other images that have been lost track of by Lightroom (also colons in the folder names) luckily were closer to the surface.
    I do regular computer maintenance, Lightroom backups, catalog integrity checks, etc. Does this make any sense at all to anyone? I can't figure where Lightroom would have gotten those colons.
    I'd love to figure this out, not just for my own curiosity, but because the process of locating the files via Lightroom is quite time consuming.
    Thanks.
    Leonard
    p.s.: I am using an iMac (1.9 GHz G5 processor), OS X (10.4.11), 2.5 G RAM
    [Screen name, lkajsdt, created by randomly pressing keys. The registration system would not accept any sensible pseudonym I tried.]

    Thanks, John,
    I had a suspicion that the slashes might somehow be implicated, but all of the other folders in the hierarchy (as shown in Lightroom's alert box) that have dates in their names have slashes which were not somehow converted to colons (I do not use colons, nor will the Mac allow me to use them; this was all LR's doing). When actually navigating down to the file via Lightroom, not the Finder, the offending folder(s) appear with slashes, not colons -- exactly as they appear in the Finder. Where Lightroom gets the colons, I don't know, especially since they do not appear when I am navigating through the path VIA Lightroom.
    I'll work with it again later. I just caught your message on my way out the door. Thanks again for your thoughts.
    L.

  • Very strange behavior of user ice_service

    Hallo Gurus!
    When i upload some files in /documents/MyFolder repository property ModifiedBy is equal my account name.
    But the day after all my uploaded files are modified by ice_service.
    After this i cannot open files by anonymous user, because all links look like "/irj/servlet/prt/prtroot/..." (instead of "/irj/go/km/docs/...").
    Why ice_service every day, in same time modify my files and how to block this change?

    Hello,
    the user "ice_service" is used for the Content Exchange feature of the portal.
    For more informations please check the following site --> Content Exchange (SAP Library)
    So please check in your portal if there are any daily content exchange jobs are planned (Content Management -> Content Exchange).
    Hope it helps.

  • Very strange behavior when on charge.

    When on charge at night my 5s opens and plays random Utube videos from time to time. Last night as we were laying in bed just about to go to sleep we heard my phone clicking, it turns out it wrote a short text message to someone on my contact list, its nothing to do with siri as we were both silent and about to go to sleep when it happened. Has anyone else heard of this.

    I had this very same problem when i did the switch. The thing was that there where two tools providing this functionality. The gnome power tool thing and some acpi feature started with systemd.
    Try disabling one of them.

  • Very Strange! Help Please!

    I have a 30g 3rd Gen iPod. I have been having all kinds of problems recenty, since the iTunes 5.0 update, which didn't stay around for long, so I am guessing Apple knew they screwed up. Anyway, I have a G5 here at work running Panther, and I can't eject my iPod or see it on the desktop (iTunes see's it though). At home I have a dual 1G running Tiger and I have no problems with it ejecting or appearing on the desktop.
    Also, I have resorted to wiping the disk and restoring several times as when I could get it to eject, it would continue to restart and I could here a clicking sound. This stops when I put it in disk mode, but it still won't mount at work, but at home everything will be okay.
    Please help, I don't think it is my iPod, something more to do with the G5/software.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi, thanks for your quick reply. I can imagine my questions may seem silly (or worse) but please bear with me. I'm a little new to this. I have now both uninstalled and re-installed itunes and ipod. The ipod is still not appearing in itunes. I have tried resetting the ipod but pressing select and menu (after toggling the hold) does not make the apple logo appear and does not put it into disc mode....
    And my base question is do you, or others, have any idea why this happened in the first place? Where did the podcast appear from and where did all the music go?

  • Keyboard entering text by itself. VERY strange. HELP!

    OK. This is nut;s. See that semicolon there?: I didn't type; that. The system is throwing extra semicolons and other marks like that into everything I try and typ;e. It will also just take off and typ;e hundreds of them if I let it. It's like one of the keys is stuck, but they aren't. I'm on 10;.5.7 @ 1.;87;;;;;;;;m;;hz;;;;;;;.;
    ;;;;;Someone help:!

    You may want to try resetting your PRAM. This can sometimes help with odd keyboard problems:

  • VERY strange behavior-- desktop and dock are not working

    Hi all,
    My friends' macbook is really messed up and she doesn't have applecare. She is running 10.4.11 and suddenly her desktop stopped responding, and her dock disappeared. Specifically, her desktop is plain blue, and her folder icons are there but they can't be clicked on at all. The dock is missing but the menu on the top is fine. She can open up the finder and navigate to everything via the "go" menu and open everything-- all apps work etc.
    I tried going into the dock part of system preferences, and then system prefs crashes. I tried opening the activity monitor and quitting the "finder" process and that didn't help. The dock process doesn't show up at all.
    I also tried resetting the PRAM, repairing disk permissions, and booting in single-user mode and running fsck -y. Fsck -y gets stuck on "repairing B-Tree" and then says it can't repair the hard drive.
    So I put in her install DVD and tried to run disk utility from there. "Checking B-Tree" showed up in green for a while, and then I got a red error message that the HD could not be repaired.
    Now it doesn't boot at all (grey screen, and then it shuts down-- even in safe mode) AND when I try to run the install DVD, the HD doesn't show up as a destination folder. Yikes!
    Any advice on what I can try next so she doesn't have to take her computer into apple? She has everything backed up, at least!

    Hmmmm, if the drive isn't showing up it may be dead or dying, but Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, Your best bet is DiskWarrior, you need the CD though.

    But others that may work…

    This one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
    Also, does that MacBook have Firewire?

  • The very strange behavior.

    Dear friends!
    I have two simple files
    b.java:
    public class b{
    a.java:
    public class a{
    b bb = new b();
    and have compiled them into class files.
    Then I install Servlet API servlet-2_3-fcs-classfiles.zip file and add it to classpath variable in the autoexec.bat:
    SET CLASSPATH="other classpath settings";c:\Servlet_API\servlet-2_3-fcs-classfiles.zip
    After that I try to compile my old a.java file and get two errors
    "class b not found in type declaration"
    The same situation with all my java files which have referenses on other java classes in it's code. I try recompile them and get same errors.
    When I remove the path to the servlet-2_3-fcs-classfiles.zip file from classpath everything works ok.
    Plase explain me what's wrong.
    Thank you.
    Dmitry

    Does that "other classpath settings" include "." also? Are you removing it?

  • Very strange problem, help needed please???

    I had a piece of software that acted as a virtual disk when I plugged in my 60GB Video Ipod but when I opened iTunes it appeared as if my iPod was connected with a different name and over 20 GB's used (which is right) but nothing could be seen. After disabling the virtual drive, rebooting and trying again I still had the same problem. I have all my library on my PC so it didn't bother me to try a system restore, I did the system restore but when it was finished it said that my iPod was restored but the wrong name was there and I'm missing 30 GB's. I'm happy to completely wipe it and start again but I've tried the restore twice now and I get the same problem, the capacity has halved??

    hiya!
    I did the system restore but when it was finished it said that my iPod was restored but the wrong name was there and I'm missing 30 GB's
    hmmmm. we'd probably better check on this possibility:
    Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • [SOLVED]Very strange laptop behavior: keymap changing on fly

    I have had arch up and running on my Lenovo T440s without issue for over 2 months now.  Today I ran into some very strange behavior.  After being on for about 45 minutes, with only a browser and thunderbird running, the keyboard started being selective in which keys woud work.  I could no longer mange the windows with my normal AwesomeWM key bindings.  The only thing I could do was restart by turning off and back on.  I checked journalctl and there had been a weird message around the time the error occured, something along the lines of "HKEY error 0x600, unknown thermal alarm or keyboard input".
    Now I can barely login, ocassionally I can get my credentials input before the machine stops reading in certain letters.  When I use xterm rather than the usual urxvt the letters are all some different unicode symbols, it's like the keymap has been changed to something bizarre on the fly, right after loading up.  The time at which this issue arises is not predicatable, sometimes I can get further before it happens.  For example, sometimes I can't even enter my username and other times I get a few minutes, just enough to try to enable sshd so I can effectively troubleshoot remotely.  I was able to run an update and install lm_sensors remotely.  The cpu temps are right at or below 40 deg C.
    Any ideas on how to debug this would be very appreciated.

    Hello, thank you for the reply.
    Actually this is a laptop so the keyboard is internal.  However I have input a usb keyboard from my desktop to try to isolate the issue when it occurs.  I get the same behavior out of my desktop usb keyboard.
    I am seeing no messages in the journal when the event occurs (since that one mentioned above happened yesterday).  The problem has since arisen about 20 times and I am not getting any messages.  Perhaps there is a verbosity setting in the journalctl config, I haven't yet had time to look into that.
    Two other oddities /clues are:
    1. When I go into the BIOS, I cannot get consistent response from the keys.  At first the bios just beeps at me when I try to use the arrows of other keys, although usually eventually they start working.  At first I thought this may have to do with me pressing several keys to initiate the bios rapidly as the boot is so fast, but now I'm not sure that's it--based on the amount of time that the unresponsive beep alarm is occuring for (sometimes I stop waiting and restart).
    2. When I get the bad behavior, I am able to put the machine to sleep (suspend) temporarily by closing the lid for 5 secs and reopening it.  After doing this I get normal keyboard behavior for another few minutes before it goes wonky again.
    I need this machine for work in the evenings so any help troubleshooting would be very appreciated.  Will probably be calling lenovo soon, but given that I altered the OS from preinstalled windows they may not be very helpful.
