Very strange bug: random keyboard disposition

Hi,
I just experimented a very strange bug. I have Arch installed with the XFCE desktop and Firefox3b05 from unstable. I was reading my favourite austrian newspaper online: http://derstandard.at. There's the possibility to post messages under the articles, so I clicked on "Post", and suddenly, within the posting window... my keyboard disposition went crazy. Instead of "a", I had a greek omega, instead of "s", I had a euro symbol, and so on. And more: all the other apps were suddenly affected too. I opened mousepad, same story.
I restarted X, went to the same site... and had the same experience. But after the third time, things seem to have returned to normality.
Anybody ever experienced something similar? What could this be related to? X going crazy?

Well, viewing the site is not the problem. You'd have to get an account and actually try posting a message on their message board. That's where the havoc begins.
JavaScript from hell, maybe...

  • Very strange bug with my Apple Wired Keyboard

I have a very strange issue with my Apple Keyboard.
Sometimes my Apple Keyboard stopped working at my MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch late 2013. I doesn't give any input at all in all the usb ports. The strange thing is when I connect the Apple Keyboard extension cable it worked again and I can disconnect the extension cable and plug it back in with only the cable from the keyboard itself and it works as well. This happened every 2 to 3 months to me. It only happens when my MacBook is in sleep mode and I wake it up.
Can somebody please help me. What when I lose the Apple Extension cable?

Yes, a USB extension cable with a male and female end will work.

  • Very strange bug with compareTo: returning incorrect results

Hello everyone! I have used the method compareTo many times to maintain my database project's entries. However recently I have discovered a bug, in which:
a and b both being Storage type objects:
    private static class Storage {
    object data
int nextData //an array stores the Storage objects
int previousData //this uses an integer to locate previous in array
    Problem:
    ((Comparable)(a.data)).compareTo((Comparable)(b.data)) returns a 3, when a.data is clearly 5, and b.data is clearly 20.
This is very strange, as the compareTo should return a -1 instead of a positive number. Is this a known bug with the compareTo method? I have been using it reliably for many programs but this is the first time it ever occurs to me.

    ((Comparable)(a.data)).compareTo((Comparable)(b.data))

is really the same as comparing "5" to "2"
being the first character of the string, difference
    being, surprise, surprise = 3.
If you want the Strings to be comparable that way you should left-fill them with spaces or zeros.
Or, better still, override compareTo and make your Storage implement Comparable instead of all that casting of the data objects.

  • Very strange bug with AIR and native process (Windows 7, EXE)

    Hello to everyone!
    The situation is:
I've made an AIR Application, inside of that is running a native process - EXE file.
I'm using Flash CC as IDE and tried to use compile that as EXE with AIR 2.6 and 3.6 - results are same.
So I've insert inside a checking if Native Process is supported or not and the Native process is supported all the time.
When I've just installed the application and run it - the very first attempt is good - everything is working as a must: internal EXE is called by my Application with necessary parameters as many time as I'm need.
However if I'll close the App and then will run it again - internal EXE is not starting at all, doesn't depends on number of attempts to re-start of the App.
So only way is to uninstall, install it back and then you'll be one more session of successful internal EXE-requests, till the next re-start of the App.
    That's it.
I've tried to "google it" but unsuccessful. Probably the bug is very rare.
    Help me please?
Update: at compilation with Flash CC IDE it's working all the time with no any issues.
Update-2: when I'm running installator-EXE, there is going a notification "Same version is installed, etc." and then selected "Run Now" - there is also working with no problems.

Well, I've found the solution and answer by myself and here is it please:
In case with same situation as above you need to add just one line in your AS3-code
    nativeProcessStartupInfo.workingDirectory = File.applicationDirectory;
And you will be happy so much

  • Very strange bug when using a view with a date

    Hi,
Just thought I'd point out this bug I'd found and see if anybody has had similar problems.
I'm connecting to Oracle 9i from servlets using the thin client-side JDBC driver. In the Oracle schema I've got a few views to another schema set up. One of them looks like this:
    select
    blah
    blah
    from
    projects
    where
    project_start_date between '1-Apr-2000' and '31-Mar-2010'
Nothing wrong with this, you'd think. And indeed, the view works fine and any valid queries on the view also work fine if they're performed from anywhere apart from my servlets. The servlets can perform queries on all my other views but they think that this particular view is completely empty.
As soon as I change the view to:
    project_start_date > '1-Apr-2000'
the servlets can see the data in the view.
Hope all this made sense. Anybody else had any similar problems?
    Chris.

Any time you want to do a date comparison, you really want to do an explicit to_date conversion rather than relying on Oracle to do it implicitly. I'll wager that if you change the view to
    SELECT <columnList>
      FROM projects
    WHERE project_start_date BETWEEN to_date('1-Apr-2000', 'DD-MON-YYYY') and to_date('31-Mar-2010', 'DD-MON-YYYY')that everything will work.

  • Very strange bugs - Unexpected end-of-file - LR database problem

I really like the concept and GUI of LR, but bugfixing is urgently needed. Of course I am not happy that I spent money for the current quality of software (Windows version).
Before the problem described below occured I performed some develop actions on several images without any problems.
After doing some simple cropping in the Develop module of LR the display for one single image became brown (in loupe and film strip). The problem is singular for one image.
    Then I restarted LR.
Now LR displayed a message saying "Unexpected end-of-file" at top inside the image display. (Has anybody out there ever seen this?)
That message is obviously misleading: The image NEF-file is untouched. The xmp sidecar is new of course. Apparently the database entry is broken!!!
Deleting the xmp sidecar doesn't solve the problem.
Then I told LR to remove the faulty image from the LR database without physically deleting it.
Then I checked database consistency without any problem report.
Then I tried to reconnect the image for that folder.
The image is not reconnected. It doesn't show up in LR.
Then I copied the image outside LR to a new folder and told LR to import the new folder.
The image was not imported by LR. LR is saying it is a duplicate. Obviously it is not removed correctly from the LR database even I told LR to remove it.
After some attempts (sorry I don't remember exactly) I could redisplay the problem image. Now the image is displayed correctly again. But LR is saying in a dialog box that I will be unable to make changes to that image. The grid display has a triangular exclamation sign (not a rectangular one!!!).
Later I told LR to delete (not only remove) the image physically.
Afterwards I copied the image into the OS folder.
Afterwards I was able to reconnect the missing image to the LR folder.
Afterwards I could continue working with the develop module at that image.
BUG 1) Why could this problem occur at all? ("Unexpected end-of-file")
BUG 2) Obviously the image has not been correctly removed from the LR database although I told LR to do this.
No, my disks are not full.

  • Very strange bug when importing ICS files

Hiyas.. I have two ICS files, one for calendar entries during november, one for entries during december. According to all I can see, both files only contain entries for the corresponding month.
Now.. when I import them into a calendar, I import November. Works fine. Now I import December. Works fine too for december, but it deletes entries in November. So I imort november again. Now I have all entries for november, but it deletes entries (not all, just some) in December.
From all I can see, the ICS files are correct. I really don't get it. Is this some kind of an unknown bu in iCal?
The files can be downloaded from
    http://www.misteli.ch/november2008.xls.ics
    http://www.misteli.ch/december2008.xls.ics
since I cannot attach them to this posting.
Does anyone have a clue about whats going on here?
    Thanks in advance
    Rog

That might work, but the problem is, this is my girlfriend's working calendar and I want to publish it to MobileMe, so both me and her have it. Okay, I could use two separate calendars and publish them both, but that would be quiet a bit clumsy. If this is the only way it works, I can do it I guess. I just wondered if this wasn't rather an iCal Bug that needs to be fixed in the next version or if I did something completely wrong there.
You see.. her calendar comes in the form of an Excel file. I wrote some code to parse the XLS file, read the information from that file and create an ICS file that I can import into iCal. The idea was to use an autoamted task for that, but I didn't continue that path yet. So, it was perfectly understandble if I created crap in the ICS files, but from all I can see when I open it with TextWrangler, the ICS files are up to spec and correct.
    Thanks anyway though!

  • Very Strange Bug! Help me plz!

When i downloaded and installed iTunes 10.5, it looked like this:
I've already reïnstalled all my apple stuff enz. That didn't work. Now i got 10.5.1 and that didn't solve anything either.
    I have windows 7.
    Does anyone have a solution?

Uninstall iTunes and all other Apple software (Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, iCloud Control Panel, MobileMe Control Panel, QuickTime, Safari and anything else I've missed). Reboot & reinstall.

  • VERY strange lag on a Dell Optiplex 760

I thought it would be a good idea to keep a 16GB flash drive on my keychain that booted Arch so I could work on HW for college in a consistent OS!  Everything is working great so far, but I ran into a very strange problem with a Dell Optiplex 760.  During the normal Arch init process, everything loads great, except for when it gets to the udev stage where everything hangs.  But here's the strange part of this scenario: the problems go away when I start typing random keys or move the mouse!  If I don't do this, the system hangs completely from what I can tell.  This happens at the console and with X.
The service tag for this machine is FDCQQJ1, and the dell.com driver area brings up this list of hardware and (windows) drivers for it.

  • Strange bug/artefacts on Sprites rendering

    Hi everyone,
I am experiencing some very strange rendering artefacts on the facebook game I am working on (Mutants: Genetic Gladiators).
I render our characters as a series of quads drawn with the Graphics class on a bunch of Sprites (no stage 3D here)  that are animated by code. Each Sprite can have its own blending mode and color transform.
In some situations I can see some bright colored lines along what appears to be the borders of my quads although the image I use as my texture atlas is fully transparent in those areas.
I observed that the symptoms appear most often when I have quite a lot of overdraw. Especially with mixed blend modes. As an example The particles in the image below are rendered with the "add" blend mode. We can clearly see some unwanted purple outlines.
The issue is not systematic, it occurs randomly with the same setup but when it does it is repeatable. It has been reported with various versions of the flash player including 11.8.800 and in different browsers (Chome, Firefox, Safari).
Another interesting aspect is that artefacts don't appear if I hide the background (which is a large bitmapFilled quad with a colortransform).
Here is another example during his attack, we can clearly see some bounding rectangles of my crabman, especially around the claw. I added a close-up on the artefact and a screen grab of the atlas I use.
EDIT: As a complimentary information, the artefacts don't appear if I remove the ColorTransforms that I apply on the characters and the background.
EDIT 2 : The artefacts don't appear in LOW stage quality (which is insufficient for my purposes). The higher the anti-aliasing, the more present the artefacts are.
Have you experienced similar artefacts? Is there a workaround? Am I doing something evil that breaks the Flash renderer?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Phil

    Hi Phil,
We'd be happy to take a look, but we'll need to run it under a C++ debugger to really understand what's going on.  If possible, it would be great if you could strip this down to a super simple example.  It will make it much faster for us to debug.
    Please file a bug here:
    http://bugbase.adobe.com/
If you're not comfortable posting examples or details in the public bug, send me a private message and I can pass the information along in our private channels.
    Thanks,

  • Very strange problem / Perpetual command key

I've been using OS X since its inception, and have never had this problem before.
Starting yesterday, I noticed a very strange problem that was happening randomly. When I clicked on an app in the dock, it would just reveal the app to me in Finder rather than opening it. Other problems including multiple selections when single-clicking on items with my mouse, and not being able to type. After some fidgeting, I realized that my iMac is acting like I'm always holding down the command (apple) key. If I have a window open, for instance, pressing the H (just by itself) key will hide the window. Pressing Q will quit whatever is active.
I shut down, restarted, plugged in a different keyboard, used a different mouse, unplugged all my periphs, deleted all haxies and their attached files, and it still happened. I unplugged my 2nd monitor, and that seemed to fix it after another restart... but then I plugged in my 2nd monitor again and restarted, and now everything is fine. It's just happening randomly. I'm afraid to restart my Mac now. This is really bizarre!!!
    Someone please help!

If it's any help, it started right after the following:
When booted to Vista one night, I noticed ghosting on my nice new iMac screen which kinda irked me. I could see the menubar with the Spotlight menu icon burned into the screen.
So when I got back into OS X I looked for a menubar hider. I tried Menushade and Menufela, both of which are quite old... probably before any mention of an Intel switch had ever occurred.
But now I had a problem... no clock. So I went ahead and downloaded Yahoo! Widget Engine (aka Konfabulator). I know, I know... what a crazy workaround just to hide the menubar (this is why it would be GREAT if Apple would build in its own menubar hider option!)
Anyway, this stuff started happening, so I deleted all of those apps (Menufela, Menushade, and Yahoo Widget Engine) with AppZapper (a great little app).
Ugh... this is what you get for experimenting with homegrown apps, I guess.
    Anyway, hope that helps.

  • Don't want random keyboard & mouse events to wake from sleep

is there any way to prevent a random keyboard press or mouse movement from waking up the computer? a terminal setting or something? ideally, i'd just like to use the power button to do this--or at the very least to completely disable the mouse's ability to wake the machine, and specify a certain key or something.
seems like an obvious setting that's missing...or that i'm overlooking...?
    thanks!

    Thanks.
If it's a BlueTooth mouse you can uncheck the option in the Keyboard & Mouse preferences.

  • Very Strange Internet Problems

I own a MacBook Pro 15.4 Inch that I purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently upgraded to Leopard and have all the latest updates. I am from the US, and when I am home my internet works fine. However, I am on travel to Seoul, South Korea right now and am having a very strange internet problem.
As far as I can tell, the URLs that I type in to my browser are, sparodially, not translated correctly into the webpages that they are supposed to represent. This problem is probably effective 75% of the time, and the rest of the time my internet works roughly correctly. For instance, when I enter http://www.google.com, instead of being taken to the Google homepage, I am taking to the homepage of Jammin Beats DJ Service, an obscure website about a company in northern Pennsylvania. The actual URL of this website is http://www.jamminbeats.com, but when my internet is malfunctioning, 'jamminbeats' is for all intensive purposes replaced by 'google' (that is, it applies not only to the main page, but to sub pages, so "http://www.google.com/weddings" takes you to "http://www.jamminbeats.com/weddings" and etc). For most other webpages, one of two things happens. Either I am taken to the correct page but it is displayed without any images or frames (just the html text and links), or I am taken to a blank page with the header "Under Construction", which I assume is the default for a page that doesn't exist. This is why it seems as though the URLs are simply being interpretted erroneously.
This problem occurs when connecting both to the wireless and the wired internet at my hotel, and it occurs on both Safari and Firefox, so it is not a connection-specific or browser-specific problem. It may be a problem with the hotel's internet, and as of yet I have not had a chance to test the computer at another location. However, a colleague using an IBM computer has had no problems, and I am currently on a Samsung machine in the business center of the hotel and it is working correctly as well. I have searched extensively online for a similar problem but have come up empty handed, and more than anything, I am confused about what might be causing this problem. The strangest thing is that a fraction of the time, the internet functions normally, but it is usually roughly 15 minutes out of every hour, and eventually I am inevitably taken back to Jammin Beats.
I am a computer science graduate but I still have no idea what would cause this problem. At first I thought it might be a hacker, but if it is, he or she has been at it consistently for 3 days now, and only seems to be targeting my computer. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated, as I have been forced to resort to the hotel's business center for checking email, doing work, etc. Thanks in advance.

I did consider that, as I was in Beijing last week and there are a number of censored sites. However, in Korea I have had problems with very basic sites like facebook, wall street journal, google, yahoo, Korean google, my hotel's webpage, etc. Further, I have successfully gotten all of these sites to load seemingly at random, and can access them without problems on other computers. The only disconnect seems to be between my MBP and the internet, not between Korean internet and the web. I have toyed around with the network settings, and although sometimes after switching from "Automatic" to a fixed connection I get some sites to work, it usually only lasts a short time and eventually the same sites stop working. I reset my cache regularly to make sure I'm not getting sent to cached sites, but this also doesn't help. Further, my Apple Mail, Skype and AIM accounts jump between being connected and disconnected randomly as well. Again, this is isolated to my own computer, which is why I'm so confused.

  • A small but very irritating bug in Mail: after pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word such as "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.

When composing an email in Mac Mail I've noticed a small but very irritating bug: pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word, e.g. "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.
    Any ideas?

I just recreated this problem on my iMac (wired KB, no wireless KB) by changing Mail > Preferences > Composing > Spellcheck from "as I type" to "never". Then type a contraction ending in 're and the space bar causes the cursor to jump back as others have stated, to the spot 'r|e
Next, I went into System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, and turned off "use smart quotes" and the problem went away again.
From this point (smart quotes off, spell checking never), if I turn Smart Quotes ON, the problem returns.
The problem is dependent on the state of both settings.
The spacebar in Mail "works" if I have either of the following setting combinations:
Keyboard: smart quotes OFF, Mail: check spelling ANY SETTING
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: check spelling AS I TYPE
    Other combinations FAIL
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check spelling NEVER
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check Spelling WHEN I CLICK SEND
Looks to me like there's a bug in Mail > Preferences > Check spelling > NEVER and WHEN I CLICK SEND that interacts badly with Keyboard > Smart quotes ON.
    Thanks.

  • Very strange problem. Missing characters in QT applications

    Hello all.
I'm trying to deal with a very strange issue since some time, that is driving me crazy, because I have no clue where the problem may lay:
In my Archlinux system, some, and only some QT applications (for example Skype, or Qtconfig) don't display properly certain characters in the unicode set (for example "ń" or "ł") when I use certain fonts (for example Terminus, Clean or Verdana), and those applications substitute those characters with the corresponding ones from the Bitstream Vera Sans font type.
So, when I write, say, the Polish word "Toruń", the four first letters (T, o, r and u) are rendereed in the desired font type (let's say Terminus). However, the last letter (ń) is rendered in Bitstream Vera Sans, thus making the writing appear really ugly and uneven.
However, this doesn't happen in Opera (the browser), which is a QT application, but where I get the whole unicode character set displayed properly in the desired font type (Terminus in this example).
Also, this doesn't happen in the rest of non-QT applications I have in my system: all of them render perfectly the whole unicode set of characters in the desired font type, no matter which.
But! it's not a problem of those QT applications, because I have another partition with Ubuntu installed, and when I boot that partition I don't have this problem: all applications, including Skype and Qtconfig, display correctly all characters in the whole unicode set, no matter which font type I'm using.
    This is totally bewildering me.
    Any clue?
    Thank you.

The problem is not only in qt applications. I run openbox and this is the output I get when using the command-line script pdfmerge to merge pdf files:
GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=48, glyph=0030 in the font VerdanaBold . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.
GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=49, glyph=0031 in the font VerdanaBold . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.

GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=34, glyph=0022 in the font VerdanaItalic . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.
GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=54, glyph=0036 in the font VerdanaBold . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.
GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=44, glyph=002c in the font VerdanaBold . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.
GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=50, glyph=0032 in the font VerdanaBold . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.
GPL Ghostscript 8.71: Missing glyph CID=77, glyph=004d in the font Verdana . The output PDF may fail with some viewers.
There are visible errors in the pdf output. For example, bold "C" is replaced by a square box, bold "b" is replaced by a space.
It looks like there's bug in the Verdana font or perhaps in Ghostscript 8.71
