Very strange ethernet problem with iMac G5

Thanks in advance for your help.
I am helping my boss dust the cobwebs out of our network infrastructure (I work for a relatively small company in Michigan). In doing so, I unplugged all the ethernet cables out of our Linksys 24-port 10/100 switch and blew the dust out of the unit using canned air. I did not spray any of the propellant from the canned air and get anything wet.
Once I finished cleaning the unit, I powered it up and began plugging cables back in. I decided to try to group all the workstation cables into the first few ports. There are only 7 workstations. The switch indicated that all 7 were connected at full duplex and activity LED was blinking on all 7. I plugged our file server, AirPort and uplink to internet into the last 3 ports, and all the unused cables into the remaining ports. All 24 ports have cables plugged in, but as I said there are only 7 workstations plus the 3 other devices I mentioned. The remaining dozen or so cables lead to unused wall jacks. All ports on the switch were filled before and after the cleaning.
Here's the problem. One of our workstations, an iMac G5, suddenly was not able to connect to the internet. I checked in the network settings to make sure IPv4 was configured correctly. This particular machine has a manually assigned IP of 192.168.1.16/255.255.255.0. Router and DNS are also manually set. It has to be manually assigned - a public IP forwards to it via NAT in our DSL modem/router.
I decided to termporarily change this to DHCP. Our DCHP server is on another machine running OS X Server 10.4.11. The DHCP server is configured to assign IPs from 192.168.1.101-200. However, when I set the iMac in question to get its IP adderess through DHCP, it is assigned an IP of 169.254.179.148 (or something close to that). Confused, I checked the DHCP log on the server and found no entry for the problematic iMac requesting an IP.
I then turned off TCP/IP for the ethernet port, set TCP/IP to DHCP for the AirPort, and renewed. I got IP of 192.168.1.107. So it works properly with AirPort. Disabled TCP/IP for AirPort, FireWire, Bluetooth, enabled using DHCP for ethernet, and renewed. Got 169.x.x.x again.
Also tried switching ports on 24-port switch (tried 4 different ports), running a 50' CAT5 cable to another ethernet port in same room. Moving machine into the room where the switch is located seems pointless as I've tried multiple ports and cables already. None of my attempts has fixed this problem.
Please help!

So it works with AirPort but not over Ethernet?
Have you tried creating a new location in System Preferences Network pane, and setting Ethernet up from the default settings?
Make sure the iMac G5 is not set up to do +Internet Sharing+ (using the Ethernet port); look in System Preferences Sharing pane, and turn OFF +Internet Sharing+ if it is currently ON.
Is one of the other workstations a Mac? If so, you could use it to test the iMac G5's Ethernet port, by connecting it directly and using +File Sharing+ (I suppose you could do that even with a Windows PC).

  • Strange Boot problem with iMac OSX 10.7.5 (Boot loop, not working safe boot etc.)

    Hey guys,
I've got a strange problem with my iMac Late 2009. This morning it didn't want to boot (grey screen with turning wheel). Yesterday when I shut it down everything was fine. Last backup was finished three minutes before. So I was a bit shirty but noch scared of any data loss.
    I tried  the following things:
    1. boot recovery and check hdd (it's a new one, only second day back from apple store for replacing seagate hdd), everythings fine
    2. try to boot in safe mode, did not work!
    3. try to boot in verbose mode, did work until it stopped. Screenshot of the last lines of log is within this post
    4. I used my TM backup and afterwards I could boot! Strange, because as I sad the backup finished a few minutes beforce I left my mac and shut it down
Now I'm a bit scared of shutting it down again But what would be the next step to find the error? My first thought were some third party kernel extensions, but that would not affect a safe mode boot, am I right? I have a Macbook Air here which is setup nearly identical to my mac and it's working. Could it be a hardware fault? Maybe you've got an idea.
    Thanks!
    Max

at the moment it seems to be a corrupted time machine backup from my old hard drive (new one has a runtime of 27 hours). So I'll will try a clean install of my system at least, when I got the time. sh%&$ !

  • Very strange (BIG) problem with iWeb!

    Hi there,
Hopefully someone can help me and I am not screwed!
When I open iWeb to make changes to my sites (3 in all), it won't open properly. It takes about 10-15secs to load iWeb and for it to appear in the menu bar at the top. Then I get a blank iWeb window with all my sites/pages on the left hand side column as usual. Heres the problem. I can't click on any of the pages to edit them or update the site.
I had backed up the domain file in Applications Support/iWeb and after replacing the one there with the back-up file, there is no change. The site still can't be edited and I can't click on any pages in the left column!
Any help would be great. I've not done anything unusual and I am using the latest OSX 10.4.7 and iWeb 1.1.1.
    Thanks, David

    Hang on to that backup!
I think this is the time to try deleting those preference files to see if you can get iWeb to function normally again...
    "com.apple.iWeb.plist" <== /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/
    "com.apple.iLifeMediaBrowser.plist" <== /Library/Preferences/
If nothing else, then a reinstall of iWeb may be in order. If you resort to this, I would suggest that you download the iWeb 1.1.1 updater directly from Apple...http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/iweb111.html
So what caused this problem, do you know?

  • Very strange power problem...

    Hey guys (and girls ofcourse),
I'm having a very strange power problem with my late 2007 2.2Ghz santa rosa macbook.
Can you guys help me determine what the problem could be?
Here's what happened prior, when the macbook was still working. I got home from work, plugged my adapter into the wall, and it started charging. I left it on the table, and when I came back from the diner table I continued working, but suddenly noticed my macbook wasn't charging anymore. (the orange/green led wasn't lighting up but i was able to work on battery power)
I thought it was the poweradapter, so I went to the apple store the next day to lend one to test it. That didn't work, so it's not the adapter.
So then I started thinking it must be the magnetic DC connector. So I ordered that from the guys at ifixit, (since it's out of warranty) but I replaced it and it's not working.
I don't think it's the logic board, because I was able to continue working until I ran out of battery power. And I also don't think it's the battery connector, because if i'm not mistaking, the macbook can run without battery as well, but mine can't anymore.
Now I can't get any life out of my mac anymore...
Might there be something I overlooked?
    Any suggestions are definately welcome!
    Thanks a lot.
    Timo from Belgium.

    Hi Timo,
I think i have the same problem, my mac is not working without battery in it. and it wont charge it.
    i wrote a post here http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2105648&tstart=0
let me know if you have fixed the problem

  • Very Strange Internet Problems

I own a MacBook Pro 15.4 Inch that I purchased about a year and a half ago. I recently upgraded to Leopard and have all the latest updates. I am from the US, and when I am home my internet works fine. However, I am on travel to Seoul, South Korea right now and am having a very strange internet problem.
As far as I can tell, the URLs that I type in to my browser are, sparodially, not translated correctly into the webpages that they are supposed to represent. This problem is probably effective 75% of the time, and the rest of the time my internet works roughly correctly. For instance, when I enter http://www.google.com, instead of being taken to the Google homepage, I am taking to the homepage of Jammin Beats DJ Service, an obscure website about a company in northern Pennsylvania. The actual URL of this website is http://www.jamminbeats.com, but when my internet is malfunctioning, 'jamminbeats' is for all intensive purposes replaced by 'google' (that is, it applies not only to the main page, but to sub pages, so "http://www.google.com/weddings" takes you to "http://www.jamminbeats.com/weddings" and etc). For most other webpages, one of two things happens. Either I am taken to the correct page but it is displayed without any images or frames (just the html text and links), or I am taken to a blank page with the header "Under Construction", which I assume is the default for a page that doesn't exist. This is why it seems as though the URLs are simply being interpretted erroneously.
This problem occurs when connecting both to the wireless and the wired internet at my hotel, and it occurs on both Safari and Firefox, so it is not a connection-specific or browser-specific problem. It may be a problem with the hotel's internet, and as of yet I have not had a chance to test the computer at another location. However, a colleague using an IBM computer has had no problems, and I am currently on a Samsung machine in the business center of the hotel and it is working correctly as well. I have searched extensively online for a similar problem but have come up empty handed, and more than anything, I am confused about what might be causing this problem. The strangest thing is that a fraction of the time, the internet functions normally, but it is usually roughly 15 minutes out of every hour, and eventually I am inevitably taken back to Jammin Beats.
I am a computer science graduate but I still have no idea what would cause this problem. At first I thought it might be a hacker, but if it is, he or she has been at it consistently for 3 days now, and only seems to be targeting my computer. Any ideas or solutions would be greatly appreciated, as I have been forced to resort to the hotel's business center for checking email, doing work, etc. Thanks in advance.

I did consider that, as I was in Beijing last week and there are a number of censored sites. However, in Korea I have had problems with very basic sites like facebook, wall street journal, google, yahoo, Korean google, my hotel's webpage, etc. Further, I have successfully gotten all of these sites to load seemingly at random, and can access them without problems on other computers. The only disconnect seems to be between my MBP and the internet, not between Korean internet and the web. I have toyed around with the network settings, and although sometimes after switching from "Automatic" to a fixed connection I get some sites to work, it usually only lasts a short time and eventually the same sites stop working. I reset my cache regularly to make sure I'm not getting sent to cached sites, but this also doesn't help. Further, my Apple Mail, Skype and AIM accounts jump between being connected and disconnected randomly as well. Again, this is isolated to my own computer, which is why I'm so confused.

  • Very Strange Focus problem

I've encountered a very strange focus problem that I hope someone can help me
with. In my frame, I have a toolbar and some JTextFields. When I press one of
the toolbar buttons, I do whatever and at the very end I use requestFocusInWindow()
to set the focus to one of the JTextFields. Now here's the strange part. If I don't
touch the keyboard or the mouse, I can see the caret in the JTextField as expected.
As soon as I move the mouse or touch any key, the focus changes to the next
toolbar button. Makes no sense to me. By the way, I'm running 1.4 on Windows NT.

Create a new class ToolbarButton extends JButton where you have the following method:
         * Identifies whether or not this component can receive the focus.
         * A disabled button, for example, would return false.
         * @return true if this component can receive the focus
        public boolean isFocusTraversable() {
           return false;
}This prevents the buttons from getting keyboard focus, this makes only sense for toolbar buttons.
    Cheers,
    Taoufik

  • Very strange MRP Problem

    HI ALL
I am having a very strange mrp problem and that is
I created a material with all mrp1and mrp2 requirement, created the info record and source list for that material.I created a reservation for that material which in turn created the deficiency when I did the MD04.I run the MD03,as per re-order point and fix lot size two Preqs created( vendor was not shown in the Preqs even though I established the source list for the material?).I change these Preqs into PurOrds and did the Gr.Every thing fine till here all changes happened in material requirement list(MD04).Now I did one more reservation and created the deficiency again and run MD03 again with a message that mrp done but this time when I went back and checked MD04, there is no Preqs shown and deficiency remained  same as was before. I did the same exercise on several material and every time I am having the same problem as the 2nd time the Preqs don't show in MD04. Please help me as I check upto my knowledge but unable to resolve this one.

what is the control parameter of the MRP run that you select.

  • Very Strange Bluetooth Problem

    Hi There
My mac seems to have developed a very strange bluetooth problem. When i try to connect my mighty mouse, it 'connects' then a couple seconds later disconnects, then connects and disconnects etc. during the time that it is apparently connected, the LED on the bottom of the mouse keeps flashing in the way it does when it's searching for a connection, which tells me it ain't connected at all.
Thinking this was just a mighty mouse problem i try connect my iPhone, same problem. This time I do it with the bluetooth preferences open i notice that the status of the iPhone connection has gone funny (like it has not connected on top of the word connected in the status, one atop the other) this weirdness happens irrespective of what you connect, and only to the iPhone status, even if it's bluetooth is off.
This weird status thing has happened before, when i was messing about with bluetooth tethering on my iPhone. So, naturally, i assume the iPhone's buggered up the system somehow. I remove it from the list of paired things and try the mouse again, no luck. I try to re add the mouse, but the pairing process doesn't complete itself before the mouse drops signal again. I can't re-pair my iPhone either for the same reason.
    how can i fix this?
    Cheers, Joe

    Hey there,
Navigate to HD > Users > Your Account > Library > Preferences.
Locate, and move to the Trash, this file com.apple.Bluetooth.plist.
If still no luck, try zapping the PRAM to see if that helps. Instructions on how to do that can be found [HERE|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379].

  • I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB)

I have a problem with Imac mid 2010 graphics card (ATI Radeon 5670 512MB). When I play video formats like xvid, mkv, avi iMac freezes and emits horrible sound,in service said the problem is not overheating. Not a problem with memory or hard disk because I placed second correct parts. The same problem is with OSX 10.6.8 and 10.8.4 and other players.Apple hardware test found no problem and tech tool pro found no fault.
After five days of testing in the service they can not  found fault and it was decided to change the graphics card.
New graphics have been tested for two days but it is not reproduced divx ... but their test software which did not find any fault on the old graphics...
Do I have the right to complain if repair does not fix the problem because I use non apple softwere and video formats.

You could look at the System Profile for the info it presents for the card.  But why wouldn't you think it's not up to date if you have the latest install (according to your sig above)?
What program are you trying to run?  Is there anything in the system log?
I think it's the program that's having the problem and not anything with your video software.

  • Problems with iMac retina 5K (artifacts, glitches and etc.)

    Hello dear Apple.
I have bought new iMac with retina 5K display and I have found lot of problem with it. It was December 2014 when I got my first iMac. And after then I have found few real problems with it.
The first problem is I can't open high resolution image with standard Preview.app. I mean 'high resolution' - more then 30-40 megapixels. When I open them, I can see image, but only 2-3 seconds, and after that I see horizontal artifacts only. I can't open images, like this Rembrandt.jpg; Carpaccio.jpg; Holbein.jpg
The second problem, when I change resolution in to scaled mode (System Preferences/Display) for increase image on display. I found when select some area on background of desktop it has left some lines after itself. It is particularly unpleasant if you have plain colour desktop background. You can view, how does it look here.
The next problem with animation in different parts of interface, e.g. sometimes when I open Time Machine some parts of windows are freezing or appear some artifacts or glitches near borders of window. And I have the same situation, when I open Mission Control, or any Adobe app or other, or simply rename a files. I have found few discussions with problems like mine, but in the separate places
    5K iMac - bad GPUs?
    Graphic Problems with Retina iMac
    iMac 5K and indesign glitch
And after that I want to tell you that I have this problems on four (4) iMacs. It was really difficult to arrange four replace. I have lost a lot of time an spent a lot of nerves for discuss and resolve my problems with Apple support. Finally, they told me that they do not know about problems with iMacs, and they could offer give my money back. I glad to get my funds, but now in my country price for iMacs has doubled. And if they refund my money, I can buy half new iMac only.
I am sorry for my language and style, but I do not know what I should doing with that. And should I hope, that my problem resolve with OS X updates? Or it is hardware problem of the whole iMacs 5K...

Yes Ralph, absolutely correct, 4 times. Do you have the graphic card the same as me, or m290? Could I ask you check your iMac for few things, please?
For the first, can you enlarge scale in System preference/Display and install plain dark color desktop background. Are there any footprints after rectangular selection like in my video https://youtu.be/dBglFvjJx1Q?
And for the second, could you download this image https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/07/Rembrandt_Harmensz._van_Rijn _-_Nachtwacht_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg  and open in plain Preview.app, and zoom it? Are there any glitches?
    Thank forward.

  • Strange major problem with 975X PowerUp Intel MOBO

I’m suddenly having a strange major problem with a MSI 975X Platinum PowerUP Edition V2.1 MS-7246 Intel socket 775 motherboard. Previously, it had given me no problems at all.
    It went like this:
Powered on system in the morning, booting from a cold start.
Hit DEL key to get into the BIOS.
Missed the window and the system booted into Windows normally.
Re-started the system from within Windows.
Hit DEL key to get into the BIOS and was successful the second time.
Hit the ENTER key on the first item “Standard CMOS Features”.
The DATE, TIME and other information was displayed on the next screen, but at this point, the BIOS screen became completely unresponsive to any keyboard input.
The only thing I could do at that point was to power off.
Subsequent power on boot-ups resulted in the system always freezing at the BIOS splash screen after the video card sign-on.
I have switched power supplies, hard drives, keyboards and video cards. I have disconnected everything except the video card, keyboard and one RAM module. I have switched the four RAM modules around and then reduced the RAM to one 256MB module in the proper slot. I even changed the battery on the MOBO, in case it had shorted out and removed and re-seated the BIOS chip. It still halts at the BIOS splash screen.
The BIOS chip can’t be completely dead, because I powered off and pushed the BIOS reset button on the MOBO to reset the BIOS to the factory defaults. When I re-booted, I could tell that it had actually reset to the factory defaults because I had previously set the BIOS to reboot the system on resumption of power and the factory default was to remain off until the power button was pushed, which was now the default.
I’m stumped! All I can think of is to get a new pre-programmed BIOS chip and see if that makes any difference, but I’m not sure this system is even worth the expense with no guarantee of success. Any suggestions on how I might get past the BIOS splash screen or do I for sure have a corrupt BIOS chip?

System specs as per the posting guidelines -
Board: MSI 975X Platinum PowerUP Edition V2.1 MS-7246 Intel socket 775
Bios: Version (can’t recall & can’t check since it won’t go past the BIOS splash screen)
VGA: ASUS EN7600GS nVidia GeForce 7600GS PCI-e 256MB DDR2 (also tried new XFX nVidia
             Geforce 210 PCI-e 2.0 512MB DDR3)
PSU: Chiefmax 680W ATX (also tried new OCZ 700W ATX)
    CPU: Intel 2.8GHz LGA-775 Core2 Duo Dual-Core Processor
    MEM: 4 x Samsung 512MB 1Rx8 PC2-5300U (2GB total)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 250GB SATA2 (also tried Seagate Barracuda 500GB SATA2)
    COOLER: Intel OEM LGA 775 fan/heatsink C25897-001
    OC: No
    OS: Vista Home Premium 32-bit
I have been through the BIOS reset procedure several times and pretty much as outlined. As I said before, I could tell that it had taken a reset to the factory defaults, because the power on option had changed.

  • Need your help with very strange Oracle problem..

    hello,
At our office we have an oracle 10g database (don't have exact version on hand) installation that stores data for many of our applications. We are having a very strange, intermittent issue that is causing us lots of headaches lately.
The problem is, the database will be running fine, humming along, with clients connected to it, from different hosts, different networks, and using different technologies (PERL DBI::DBD, OJDBC, etc). Every so often (at intermittent intervals, no real patterns we can discern), it seems as though the database will just hang and not respond to requests for a few seconds. Outages have ranged from 1,2,3 seconds to sometimes 20,30,40 seconds (very rarely longer than 5-10 seconds though).
Over the last few weeks, we've done lots of work to try and rule the network out of the equation. Today, a java client i wrote that was running locally on the database host, connected via OJDBC timed out (my timeout was set to 5 seconds) running a simple query ("select sysdate from dual") at the same time as all our other remote clients.
I'm really not sure where else to look at this point. Our DBA department says they see no errors in the database, no indication of problems anywhere. We've ruled out our backend applications and the network at this point. The java test client i wrote was running from about 5 different clients, dispersed through many different networks. They all timed out at the same time as other network clients that run via perl's dbi/dbd framework.
Can anyone suggest what would be a possible cause for this? How could it be possible that network clients issuing "select sysdate from dual" would hang for over 5 seconds?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can offer.

I am hoping you are not in a situation where your DBA said there's nothing wrong with database, your network admin said networking issue ruled out, your system admin said OS is normal. Yet, you as end user suffer and end up trying to figure out the issue by yourself while you didn't have expertise in any of these fields. That's basically the situation we were in for a few months here. It was, to say the least, extremely frustrating. Since we wrote the applications that were suffering the most due to this db/hardware issue, naturally, we felt "responsible" for taking the ownership to track down and fix the issue (after some perseverance ,we were finally able to narrow this problem down to a database storage issue).
After exhausting every other dba theory about DBI/JDBC/Firewalls/Networks/etc, we simply just failed over our database to some standby hardware that had some directly attached storage (as opposed to a SAN configuration like our primary db instance runs off of), and the problem has basically disappeared at this point. It's been about two weeks now. Whereas we normally see a handful of episodes a day, now we see none.
Our system administrators are looking into our SAN now and working to optimize its performance.
Hopefully this will put this mystery to bed. It's been a long year+ chasing this problem down and I'm glad to see it licked finally. Thank you all for your input. I've learned quite a bit about Oracle in the process and I sincerely hope our DBA team here has learned something valuable from this exercise too.

i ve got very strange effects on every icon on the display.
    like grey error
i did a screenshot... but i do not know if i can upload it on this page...
i have no idea what i can do...
its an old imac 20 inch.

    2 GB DDR
with Mac OS X, version 10.4.11
you can see the effect in my uploaded photo... in my profil...
    if you have any idea...
    that would be great
    thanks
    anke

It appears to be either a bad graphics card, or bad capacitors on the motherboard.
If you have a non-iSight G5 iMac, you can take the back off your iMac and inspect the capacitors visually.  There are 28-30 capacitors standing up off the board like tiny little cylinders.  Look for dark spots, bulges, or leaks.  If they okay, it's probably the graphics card.
I had a similar situation, and mine was a bad graphics card.
Capacitors can be replaced by an experienced electronics repair person for about $250-$350.  The capacitors themselves are cheap, it's the labor.
The graphics card could probably be replaced, but it would be a used replacement part and probably similar costs.
Better to use the money on upgrading to a new computer.
    Good luck.

  • Screen Problems with iMac G5 20" (iSight)

    Hello!
I had the same problem with my iMac G5 20" (iSight) as described by Bob North Apr. 18, 2006 at http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/imacg5/topic2276.html#apr25:
"""" I repair Apple products, and recently I've seen strange and erratic display problems with the G5 flat-panel (iSight) 17" and 20"...and I am very curious about the origin. The picture will display what I will call "plaid pixles". Upon boot, the dispaly appears normal, but within 5-10 minutes, either at desktop or in ASD, the normal display will "crash" to the "plaid" display. The desktop, or whatever, can still be distinguished in the background, but it is overwashed by the plaid patterns -- which do change slightly, and also cover the full space of the screen. I've seen different scenarios, 3 in 2 weeks, where the symptom is exhibited with no particular failure pattern -- both before and after repair. I've replaced the main logic on one occasion, with no fix...but the 2nd try replaced both display panel and inverter. The display issue was fixed, but the system exhibited lockups only when it reached the destop. Another repair the same issue was seen after replacing the 20" main logic, where the symptom was not present previous. Personal opinion of the late 2005 IMAC flat-panels, in the hardware sense, is the likelihood of component manufacture issues, possibly the main logic boards or the panel displays themselves. Repair of this model, as opposed to the earlier, non-iSight flat-panel 17 and 20" models are extremely difficult -- access to main componenets is blocked by the display panel, which must be removed for each troubleshooting attempt. The internal hardware design is not oriented for repair ease...they are by far the most difficult to work on.
Any input regarding the display issues? Thanks.""""
I can't use the mouse or anything else, and after a while the fans start to go on max. This is the second time I encounter this problem within 30 days. What I have noticed is that the day before, the brightness of the screen started to "blink" slightly -- like if the screen tried to adjust itself.
But I haven't experienced what Bob North describes as the: "Upon boot, the dispaly appears normal, but within 5-10 minutes, either at desktop or in ASD, the normal display will "crash" to the "plaid" display".
I just restart with the power button and everything is working OK. I made an Extended Hardware test without any problems detected.
I have been looking for this issue with iMac G5 20" (iSight) and only found it at http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/imacg5/topic2276.html#apr25 :

Thanks.

Does it look anything like this?

My nearly 3 year old Titanium PowerBook G4 just did this one day, out of the blue. The problem went away after a few minutes, but I had already taken photos. Thanks to those photos, Apple gave the powerbook a new logic board.
(This PowerBook has had its logic board replaced twice, a new optical drive, and a cracked case edge replaced. AppleCare has more than paid for itself. Despite the occasional problems, I remain very happy with this machine. I'm sure I'd be much less happy if I had not bought AppleCare!)
