Very strange InDesign bug

I'm working with a large InDesign file, full of links and content.
As a result of to and fro with client we're sending the Masters to them, as and Idml file (they're on CS4 and us on CS6)
The file was sent back to us as an idml file but for some reason the columns have disappeared from most of the pages. It's worth noting that this is only on one of the master pages. The master page we're using for the pages is perfect, columns and widths are correct it's just the pages it's applied to is where the bug features. One solution is to manually change all pages to the master page again, but this shifts text and images in the layout over the page. For instance lines would suddently become shorter and text would either go off the page or just move elsewhere.
What I'm asking is, is this just a bug when swapping idml to indd files or is there anything I can do to prevent this??

They are a nightmare and won't upgrade at such a late stage of the projects. They send by IDML files out of ignorance, I have however got the INDD files back from them though. They are fine. I guess it's just a bug with IDML files — will definitely avoid those in the future.

Strange Indesign Bug -- I lost a weeks worth of files

Not sure what caused this. There's certainly nothing that can be done
about it. I neglected to repair my backup volume which failed a couple weeks ago and proceeded with an InDesign
large project and lost all my work.
When working on this doc, every several days I would edit the file name, adding something to the end of the file to let me know what work it contained. I began about Nov 6 and made my last edits on Nov 16, yesterday evening before going home. During the course of the day I noticed something very strange -- the file name had some jibberish in it enclosed in parens. I simply removed them and resaved.
When I came in this morning, there were NO files from Nov 7 on -- all of the edits I'd made to some 10 incrementally changing files were now gone.
I've since used a disk recoverey tool to no avail.
Obviously, I'm at fault for not using proper backup procedure -- but there's a pretty nasty bug here which bit me that is pretty frustrating. I'm on Snow Leopard. File was about 150 pages, quite a bit of imagery.

Sorry to go silent, but I was busy trying to salvage things.
First -- thanks for all the helpful replies, and also thanks for the wake-up calls as to my sloppy procedures. I've taken them to heart and just finished backup up my system. I had a functioning backup system that failed a few weeks ago and I let my workload keep me from attending to it.
As I stated earlier, I was using a backup method where in the same directory I was altering names every chapter. The day the system ate my collection of files I had encountered some sort of problem in the file names. I corrected the problem and went on.
When I first realized the data was lost I immediately checked my "dropbox" (an online program that lets me move with files between computers. I had taken the work home for the weekend, but deleted it monday morning from the dropbox because I hadn't actually done any work over the weekend. I worked all day monday and it was on tuesday thart my files were gone.
When I came in to work monday morning I noticed something interesting in my task bar at the top of the OS X screen. I saw a program that when highlighted said "backup successful". It seems I had installed the free version of Mozy a few months back and since it was only 2 gig of storage I pointed it as a test to my "Dropbox" and forgot about it.
Sure enough, it had dutifully copied friday evenings work out of the drop box to the Mozy servers.
So, despite all of the suggestions failing (booting without extensions, data salvage programs and so forth) I have no a file that represents only one days worth of data loss. And the edits I did monday were fairly minimal. Needless to say I've made multiple copies of it and I am now back on schedule to deliver my project ontime.

Very strange JavaScript bug in Dreamweaver CS6 for Mac

I'm not sure if this works only on a Mac, but it definitely works on any documents containing JavaScript that I create.
Type these characters exactly on a new line or at the end of any line of JS code in Dreamweaver. Works in a <script> tag in an HTML file and in a .js file. Copy/paste also works if you don't feel like typing, but watching the transformation is kinda worth the work.

Note what happens to the first / and the end of 'instances'... If you change any of these characters, even add a space at the end, it doesn't work. It has to be that phrase exactly.
Is this just happening to me?

Hmmm.. I'm using 5808. It's nothing serious, just kind of comical.
Here's a screenshot of what happens on my machine. I'll update my Dreamweaver and see if it fixes it.

Very strange bug: random keyboard disposition

Hi,
I just experimented a very strange bug. I have Arch installed with the XFCE desktop and Firefox3b05 from unstable. I was reading my favourite austrian newspaper online: http://derstandard.at. There's the possibility to post messages under the articles, so I clicked on "Post", and suddenly, within the posting window... my keyboard disposition went crazy. Instead of "a", I had a greek omega, instead of "s", I had a euro symbol, and so on. And more: all the other apps were suddenly affected too. I opened mousepad, same story.
I restarted X, went to the same site... and had the same experience. But after the third time, things seem to have returned to normality.
Anybody ever experienced something similar? What could this be related to? X going crazy?

Well, viewing the site is not the problem. You'd have to get an account and actually try posting a message on their message board. That's where the havoc begins.

Very strange bug with compareTo: returning incorrect results

Hello everyone! I have used the method compareTo many times to maintain my database project's entries. However recently I have discovered a bug, in which:
a and b both being Storage type objects:

((Comparable)(a.data)).compareTo((Comparable)(b.data)) returns a 3, when a.data is clearly 5, and b.data is clearly 20.
This is very strange, as the compareTo should return a -1 instead of a positive number. Is this a known bug with the compareTo method? I have been using it reliably for many programs but this is the first time it ever occurs to me.

is really the same as comparing "5" to "2"
being the first character of the string, difference
being, surprise, surprise = 3.
If you want the Strings to be comparable that way you should left-fill them with spaces or zeros.
Or, better still, override compareTo and make your Storage implement Comparable instead of all that casting of the data objects.

Very strange bug with my Apple Wired Keyboard

I have a very strange issue with my Apple Keyboard.
Sometimes my Apple Keyboard stopped working at my MacBook Pro Retina 15 inch late 2013. I doesn't give any input at all in all the usb ports. The strange thing is when I connect the Apple Keyboard extension cable it worked again and I can disconnect the extension cable and plug it back in with only the cable from the keyboard itself and it works as well. This happened every 2 to 3 months to me. It only happens when my MacBook is in sleep mode and I wake it up.
Can somebody please help me. What when I lose the Apple Extension cable?

Very strange problem. Missing characters in QT applications

Hello all.
I'm trying to deal with a very strange issue since some time, that is driving me crazy, because I have no clue where the problem may lay:
In my Archlinux system, some, and only some QT applications (for example Skype, or Qtconfig) don't display properly certain characters in the unicode set (for example "ń" or "ł") when I use certain fonts (for example Terminus, Clean or Verdana), and those applications substitute those characters with the corresponding ones from the Bitstream Vera Sans font type.
So, when I write, say, the Polish word "Toruń", the four first letters (T, o, r and u) are rendereed in the desired font type (let's say Terminus). However, the last letter (ń) is rendered in Bitstream Vera Sans, thus making the writing appear really ugly and uneven.
However, this doesn't happen in Opera (the browser), which is a QT application, but where I get the whole unicode character set displayed properly in the desired font type (Terminus in this example).
Also, this doesn't happen in the rest of non-QT applications I have in my system: all of them render perfectly the whole unicode set of characters in the desired font type, no matter which.
But! it's not a problem of those QT applications, because I have another partition with Ubuntu installed, and when I boot that partition I don't have this problem: all applications, including Skype and Qtconfig, display correctly all characters in the whole unicode set, no matter which font type I'm using.
This is totally bewildering me.

The problem is not only in qt applications. I run openbox and this is the output I get when using the command-line script pdfmerge to merge pdf files:

There are visible errors in the pdf output. For example, bold "C" is replaced by a square box, bold "b" is replaced by a space.
It looks like there's bug in the Verdana font or perhaps in Ghostscript 8.71

Premiere Pro CS5.5 -very strange issue with the color tones and Preview-

I deal with a very strange and not usual problem in Premiere Pro CS5.5 (also the version CS5). What I try to do is just a simple color correction. The problem occurs when I try to use Three Way Color Corrector but it happens with Fast Color Corrector also.
When applying the Three-Way Color Correction and without changing anything else (just applying), can be seen in the preview of the soft how sudden changes in color tones. For example, the gray tone becomes a little more green, but also can be seen very easy a change in the other color tones too. In fact even RGB Parade show the same thing. This is very, very strange and unacceptable and saw that it happens when trying to use Colorista II too.
I tried the same thing in Sony Vegas Pro 11 and I downloaded the trial version of Edius 6 to convince me if the same thing happens. Not! In Sony Vegas and Edius everything is working correctly, I have not experienced these problems in the preview's of this 2 others softs.
This issue is very annoying because every possible color correction is based on what we see in the preview and if in this preview the tones are seen altered realize that can not make a decent color correction. Yes Jim, you're right. No changes in the scopes when one just apply RGB Curves, Fast Color Corrector, RGB Color Corrector or the Three way Color Corrector (last three thanks to the new update 6.03). I already wrote that Adobe team has been able to fix this bug for some of the tools/effects.
But Brightness&Contrast? Change Color? Color Balance? Levels? MBLooks? Twixtor? Colorista II? Does it seem normally that all scopes or just one of them jump when you just apply one of these effects/tools? Not to say that in some situations even the tones change (especially in shadows&midtones).
You say this is something "very minimal". I say it is not so. I don't find normally to make a very detalied CC with Three way Color Corrector and then when applying Colorista/MBLooks, for example, the scopes jump and inclusively some tones may be influenced. And I left clear examples in this topic where you can see that this is possible. I don't know if this is "very minimal" or not, but is really so impossible to edit in Premiere without this "very minimal" issue?!? How can it be possible in other softs (Edius, Media Composer, Vegas Pro) and in Premiere not?!?
One more thing: many of us use intermediate codecs in the editing process. Do you find normally that a AVCHD video have the lumninance at approximately 110IRE, to export it directly to Cineform and then import it in Premiere, and the waveform shows the luminance at 100IRE?!? How is this possible?!? So the AVCHD video have a 110IRE luminance, you convert this video to Cineform without changing anything, and then this Cineform video have the luminance at 100IRE?!? And anyone can verify this example.
So, how can one trust in this soft?!?

Photoshop CS6 13.0.4 Update - Icons look very strange/hazy

And now the Toolbar-Icons look very strange and hazy... :-/
you can not see almost what are the symbols represent...
for example the Spot Healingbrush etc...
Is this a Bug, or the Icons are "re-designed" (but worse than before)...?

Right at the end of the Hidden Gems workshop, one of the audience asked Brian Hughs if there any plans to accommodate high dpi displays for Windows systems, as with Retina Displays. He said yes, but in a kind of offhand way that did not sound like anything was even remotely near to release. Plus you are going to need a CC subscription when it is released. As hardware gets ever better, that is a factor that is going to seriously compromise all those single app users who have sworn they will never go with CC.

One thing that I immediately thought about was that with a CC subscription being cross platform, it would truly viable to own a Retina Mac Book Pro along with a Windows desktop system. My Dell XPS M1710 is seven years old now! I love the big 19 inch screen, and over the years it has had a much bigger HDD and maximum possible 4Gb RAM, but it a bit of a tired old Hector now.
Does anyone here use both Windows and Apple systems, and is it a realistic proposition?

Strange behaviour (bug?) of 3D widget on iPad2

I've just encoutered very strange behaviour when playing around with 3d widget.
Here's what I'm doing:
Created new project from basic template,
On section page removed everything and placed two simple 3d objects (~7000 faces each no textures) and removed title, description, background etc from them, both was set to autorotate.
Send to my iPad using preview button.
What's happening:
When page with 3d objects opens one of them behaves as expected (autorotate), but other is either unresponsive for a very long time (few minutes) or you have to pinch it to full screen to be able to interact with it, however when you close full screen mode every thing gets normal and you can play with both objects at once.
It looks like a bug to me, but maybe someone else could try to reproduce this behaviour to rule out configuration factors.
Do you know when I could fill bug report?

Very strange playlist limit (751 songs)

Hi! As far as I know the maximum number of songs for each playlist ist at about 10.000 or something like that. For me this would be a number I probaly never would reach.However I'm afraid Spotify have a bug concerning the limit. My playlist can only have 751 songs (what is a very strange and odd number). When I want to add a new song, there is no error message or something similiar - it seems to work fine. Only when I look into the playlist I see there aren't new songs added. As you might understand this is pretty annoying, beaucse there's no way to recover the songsy beyond this strange limit.I hope you guys fix this soonand someone can reproduce this. Very strange crash when displaying pdf tumbnails in iBooks 1.5

Recently, I have experienced a very strange behavior in iBooks. The app opened normally and then, some seconds later, dispaly getts blak and the app closes abruptly.
I have traced back this behavior: It occurs just when the cover tumbnail of some pdf books is displayed in any iBooks' library view (both in bookshelf view and in Title view)
I removed the troubesome pdf, but found that some others ( wich worked fine fron a lot of time ago) produce just the same behavior.
When (using the painfully method of trial, and l, and trial again! And again,... ) i finally deleted all the crash - related pdf's, iBooks worked fine again.
The most intriging features related this behavior are: 1- It is related only with tumbnails. All the pdf are normally vieved using some other ipad psdf viever (such as Kdan Pdf Reader or Adobe Reader for ipad) 2- If yoy remove the cover as pdf first page ( even if you move such cover and put it as the second page, using software like pdf sam) the pdf works fine in iBooks.
I suppose this is a (annoying) bug, but,is there any suggestion? Is there any way to disable The tumbnail feature in iBooks?

Somehow this bug came up on my radar yesterday later in the day: the first two comments indicate different plugins, and the third refers to the Acrobat plugin:

Sounds like your issue, but it's puzzling that they got a tab to crash and in your case only plugin-container.exe crashed.

Very Strange Mailbox problem

I faced very strange problem last week regarding the mailbox. I have doubt that must be bug in that release. Previously we were using a single box for multiple domain hosted on it so mailboxes were created like user/[email protected]/INBOX expect the mail boxes for user domain matched with hostname domain. Then we separated one of our domain and mail server was created with hostname like mail.abc.com. All application and services was installed successfully and schema 2 was created at LDAP, as I was migration the users so user�s mail boxes must be migrated as well. Default user mailboxes was created on new box as user/uid/INBOX as domain part was missing so I put all the old mailboxes on the same partition where the default one was created and I manually copy over the contents from old one to new one and run ./reconstruct -m command so users wre eable to see all of their pervious mail and folders. Every thing went fine and well later I issue the ./mboxutil �o to get the orphan mailboxes; output gave me all mail boxes which have @domain part. So I create the file from that list and issue the command ./mboxutil �d �f filename. Oh no! Then seriuos problem occurs as the default mailboxes /usr/uid/INBOX deleted as well and technically they should not be because they were not present in the list. Then I create the mailboxes manually or some was created on reception of mail and I notice the user/[email protected]/INBOX is created as well associated to each user.
So real question is if user/[email protected]/INBOX is linked with default usr/uid/INBOX then why ./mboxutil �o is giving these mailboxes as orphan in the list, if they are not link or associated then why they are created automatically while the new mail boxes created manually or reception of mail.
I will appreciate if any body can help me with these question based on scenario presented above.

Youve found a bug with mboxutil -o
I would have suggested following a different path to achieve your goal.
I would have suggested using imsbackup to capture the existing mailboxes you wanted to move, and imsrestore to populate the new server.
the two mailboxes are NOT linked, other than mboxutil is confused.
by running reconstruct -m, you entered them both into the database. I think this was a bad idea.
If you were going to manually manipulate mailbox files, I would have removed the old uid@domain mailboxes before running the reconstruct -m
I would have also run reconstruct -r afterwards. If you had done these, you would not have seen the problem at all.

Help with getting values from request. Very Strange!!

I have created three dynamic list boxes. When the user select
the first list box, the second becomes populated with stuff
from a database. The third becomes populated when the second
is selected. Now, I have used hidden values in order for
me to get the selected value from the first listbox. The
following code is my first listbox:

Form parameters are request-scoped, hence the request.getParameter("hiddenObject"); call after the submission of the second form returns a null value because the hiddenObject parameter does not exist within the second request.
A solution would be to add a hiddenObject field to your second form and alter the onChange event for res_categories to read

document.hiddenform2.hiddenObject2.value = this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;
document.hiddenform2.submit();You will then come across a similar problem with your third drop-down if indeed you need to resubmit the form...
A far better approach would be to create a session scoped bean, and a servlet to handle these requests. Then when the servlet is called, it would set the value of the bean property, thus making it available for this request, and all subsequent requests within the current session. This approach would eliminate the need for the clunky javascript, making your application far more stable.

Strange boot bug; open firmware not working

Hi!
I have a powerbook Alu 15", 1.5Ghz. It runs OS X 10.4.2 with the latest security update. My problem started last Saturday.
The problem is that my pb will not restart nor boot on its own. The computer makes its usual chime, the hard-disk starts to spin for a few second, and then stops suddenly before anything is displayed on the screen (the display does not even light-up). If I press the option key after or before the chime, and keep it pressed, or the shift key, or the c key, or the t key, or the command-option-p-r key combination, or even the command-option-o-f key combination, the behavior is exactly the same: the disk starts to spin for a few second after the chime, and suddenly halts. The computer appears to shutdown on its own before the boot can even start.
Here is the strange part: the computer boots normally if I press the command key (this key on its own is not suppose to do anything). It also works if I press the command-s or command-v key combination. No other key combination seem to work.
Except for this strange boot behavior, the computer works flawlessly. I did not have any kernel panic for at least a year, the computer did not crash recently, everything works fine except for one small detail on which I will come back at the end.
I've tried to fix the problem by the following actions:
1) Clean install of Tiger with a new partitioning of the disk; I even zeroed the entire disk. This did not change anything so the problem is probably not OS related.
2) Reset of the PMU with the four finger salute: shift-control-option-power combination. No effect except that I lost the date/time information. Hence the reset worked.
3) Tried to reset the PRAM, but the command-option-p-r key combination does not seem to work.
4) Tried to load the open firmware with command-option-o-f, but this does not work either.
5) Memory seems ok. I have 1x256M of Apple RAM + 1x1G of RAM bought from OWC. I've had the OWC RAM for about a year without any problem. Anyway, I removed the 1G module and tried to boot on the 256M Apple module alone. Exact same behavior. Then I removed the Apple module and put back the 1G module. Exact same boot behavior. So the problem is not with my RAM, unless both modules have simultaneously developed a malfunction.
6) Tried to run the Apple hardware tests. However, for my machine, these tests come on the install DVD, in a special hidden volume. To boot on this special volume, one needs to boot with the option key depressed, and to select the boot volume from the open firmware interface. But this does not work on my machine, the computer seems to shut down before this interface can be activated!
So this problem is very strange. I can live with having to press the command key for booting my machine, but I would sure like to know what is going on here. Is the problem hardware related? Perhaps, but as I said, the machine works flawlessly except for the strange boot behavior.
Is the problem related to firmware? I think that this is the most probable option. What do you think? Maybe, the firmware got slightly corrupted? Maybe a bit got flipped in the flash memory? Is this possible? I guess so. But, what can I do? Should I contact my friendly local repairman?! I have to admit that this option scares me a little bit for such a strange problem. I would need an Apple engineer with boot related experience/expertise!
Now, here is a little bit of further information. I don't know if its related, but it is also very strange. I work with a dual screen configuration. Usually, I connect my screen and then I wake up the computer. Last week, I noticed that if I connect my second screen live, the system detects it automatically. I guess this is new to Tiger? Anyway, the strange behavior is that the computer then asks me if I want to sleep, restart or shutdown my pb, as if I had pressed the power button. But I did not press this button when I connected the dvi connector >:-o

Almost every time the PowerBook woke after sleep, I got the 'Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now...' message.
I get this message upon wake only rarely, but every time I plug or unplug a display live.
The strange behaviour was tolerable, so I've lived with it for several months. But then when checking out the PowerBook discussions, I read about the failing lower RAM slot problems, and just out of interest, checked out my System Profiler....
Ok, so the good news is that my pb may continue to work for several months
My lower RAM slot appears to be ok for now.
Interestingly, I'm sure that the start-up problems began when I started using my PowerBook with a 23" Apple Cinema Display (a pink hued one, but that's another on-going saga) - and you too have mentioned that you use an external display, so I wonder if that's part of the cause of our start-up problems.
Yes, I've noticed the 'Are you sure you want to shut down your computer now...' message just a few days before noticing the strange boot problem (not sure if the machine booted in between). I use ViewSonic displays (one at home and one at the office), and several different projectors in different class rooms. From what I read, it is plausible that there is a link between this problem and the dvi port. Could it be that the boot sequence of mb is affected by a hardware problem on the dvi port? But not when a press the command key?!
Anyway, my machine is no longer under warranty, so I intend to live with the problem for as long as possible...
But I've been doing more regular backups since then.
