VERY strange lag on a Dell Optiplex 760

I thought it would be a good idea to keep a 16GB flash drive on my keychain that booted Arch so I could work on HW for college in a consistent OS!  Everything is working great so far, but I ran into a very strange problem with a Dell Optiplex 760.  During the normal Arch init process, everything loads great, except for when it gets to the udev stage where everything hangs.  But here's the strange part of this scenario: the problems go away when I start typing random keys or move the mouse!  If I don't do this, the system hangs completely from what I can tell.  This happens at the console and with X.
The service tag for this machine is FDCQQJ1, and the dell.com driver area brings up this list of hardware and (windows) drivers for it.
Here's the #lspci -vv of the system:

  • PCI-FBUS -- Dell Optiplex 760, no video after installing the NI PCI-Fbus card

    I am just beginning the process of upgrading my 30+ production assembly stations currently using NI PCI-FBUS cards with new computers. (our current PCs are HP dc5100)
    I want to utilize our new desktop standard PC system the Dell Optiplex 760.
    When I install our existing NI PCI-FBUS cards pulled from functional old PCs and place into this new Dell PCs the PC displays no video signa during the boot process.
    I have tried both of the PCI slots on the motherboard, I have upgraded the integrated Intel NIC driver.  I have removed the optional dual head video card from the PCI-E slot and am now using the on-board video.
    I have run out of things to swap/disable with out correcting the no video issue.
    This is the first problem I have had with the new PCI-FBUS cards.  They have always seem to plug and play until this new PC model.

    Update . ... after swapping the NI PCI-FBUS card with several other PCs, I have determined that card to be defective.  It will not start in the new PCs, the other cards I have tested will.  I think this is isolated to this card only, so I will be contacting NI about repair/replacement of it.

  • Can't aquire Sound input. Locks up instantly Dell optiplex 760

    With labview 8.6 and All previous versions of labview I have the same issue with this new computer. Using supplied example aquire sound input or my own app as soon your press run the VI hangs untill I use end task. It will play sound however. Issue is with sound input only. The new pc has integrated soundmax HD sound ans windows xp operating system. I have never had a problem aquiring sound input untill this recent pc change.
    I did take notice that the cpu is not being used when it hangs up.  Very odd problem.  If I change the device from 0 to 1 it will run but with no sound of course.

    Had the same issue (sound stutter / garble) after upgrade to 3.0.6.
    Fixed it by downgrading back to 3.0.4.
    In case it helps identify the issue, these are the sound modules I am using (they work fine under 3.0.4, but produce stuttering audio under 3.0.6, under ALL apps I use - firefox/flash videos, mplayer, ffplay, etc):

  • What could be causing a VERY strange audio lag?

    Hi,
    This is a problem that I have begun experiencing in the last week or so and I have found a post on another site of someone who is having the same problem. I'm not sure if it is an update gone wrong but it is nothing I have never seen before in my years of video editing.
    Ok here's what's happening...
    If there are two audio tracks (say a stereo music track), when I push play one tracks runs slower than the other. However this is where it gets interesting... One thing I observed (very noticeable with headphones on) is that if it is the left channel which is running slow, when you pause the video and push play again, the right channel then becomes the channel which runs slow. It swaps channels every time you pause and play. With the slow channel, there is also a good half a second delay before it starts after the good channel (and vision) has begun. So if you are listening to music, it will start in the left channel then the right one will come in slower about a half a second later. Then you push space (pause) then space (play) and the same happens but it starts in the right channel.
    The computer I have is very powerful and all my hard-drives are internal so I can't see it being a system issue. I also only reinstalled my computer fully a few weeks ago so I know that junk on my computer isn't the issue either. As from other checks, it also happens in other projects, even older ones which I had finished ages ago and never had any problems. The problem actually went away earlier this week but has just come back so it seems to be an intermittent problem.
    Very strange... Any ideas or assistance would be great as I have come to a bit of a standstill with this.
    Matt

    Hi,
    Here's the answers:
    Where did the audio come from? I have tried a few various methods which all have the same result including bringing in a stereo 48KHZ aif or using footage captured from the tape (stereo only - the problem goes away if they are changed to two discrete mono channels)
    How was it copied to the computer and imported to FCP? Either captured in the case of footage from the camera or from an AIF file where it would be dropped into a bin and then onto the timeline.
    What format is the audio in? Sample rate? Everything is at 48KHZ.
    What kind of sequence are you working in? I only use two types of sequences and it happens on both being HDV - 1080i50 and DVPAL 48KHz Anamorphic.
    Is the audio's format native to your sequence settings? Yes, both for the captured footage and the imported audio.
    Hope this helps

  • Help! I need to upgrade my Dell Optiplex GX260 (tower) power supply!

    Hi,
    I plan on taking a trip to Best Buy today to purchase a video card and power supply for my Dell Optiplex GX260 (tower).  I am looking to get at least a 500W power supply.  Can you tell me the BEST power supply that will work/fit that Best Buy sells?  Thanks very much.

    I see that you posted back in March of 2009 so I hope that you haven't already fried a motherboard or PSU while learning the hardway, as I feel that I almost did. We have a Dell GX260 that my daughter wants to play some games on but I found out that the Graphic Card (ATI Radeon 7500 series) was not good enough for the games that she wants to play so I decided to upgrade the graphic card, unfortunately I found out that a lot of newer cards have PCI-Express connectors and not the PCI I need. As well, I found out that most of the PCI cards above what I have need more than the 250Watt power supply that I have. So I thought, why not just upgrade my my PSU and then I found out that Dell actually rewires their PSU differently than the industry standard ATX connectors but I see a lot of post and recommendations from people that say that you can use any store bought PSU to upgrade your Optiplex GX260 but BEWARE that if you bought your system after late 1998 then you have a Dell system that has their own proprietary wiring configuaration and even though you can buy a standard ATX PSU at bestbuy and it will seem to fit properly, it will either fry your new PSU or worse yet, it will fry your motherboard as well.  In fact, I went to bestbuy three days ago and bought a graphic card and the salesman told me that if my PSU was not at least 300Watt, which is what the card required, that I can come back and buy a standard PSU from them and that would fix the problem. The salesman even knew that I had a Dell System so I wonder if BestBuy would be willing to replace my motherboard if I had fried it based on what the bestbuy salesman told me to do???? Anyway, read this link http://www.informit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=339053 and see what you think!!  I am glad I stumbled across the information and plan on upgrading my PSU with a compatible Dell PSU or look for a Dell Converter (if there is such a cable) or just replace both my PSU and Motherboard as directed.  I also think I might actually build my next PC from scratch with all industry standard parts, as I was very ignorant up until now that Dell was doing this to their products and I have 3 of their systems in my house....but no more!!! I did find a Dell compatible PSU 500 Watt on PCPower.com but it comes with SATA drive connectors and my Optiplex GX260 has IDE connectors so I don't know if I can get a SATA to IDE conversion or not but as you can see I am still researching my options. I might actually find it will be cheaper to just buy a new system or build the one of my dreams!!
    I know I wrote a lot but I hope that this information is helpful to someone else out there who is in the same boat as me.

  • Install SUN Solaris 10 X86 in Dell Optiplex 620 with Broadcom 5751 NIC

    I shall be very grateful if any one would offer his/her advice of the followings:
    1) How do I copy a img file, i.e bcmedu.img which file size is
    1.47MB to a 1.44 diskette when the PC is unable to
    connect to network?
    2) Where can I get a copy of the driver for bcme.bef to be
    install in DELL Optiplex 620 with Broadcom 5751 NIC?
    3) Is there a way to install NIC driver through other media other than diskette in Device Configuration Assistant?
    Note: I have followed the Installation and Configuration Guide provided by SUN and Boardcom but has yet to make the network card detected despited I have been re-installed the OS many times.
    Your great help is much appreciated.
    Regards,
    swee

    i was facing the same problem just hours ago.
    i successfully installed broadcom driver into solaris 10 with Dell GX280
    i copy broadcom driver into a CD and run it on solaris pc.
    i copied out the file into a directory and use pkgadd -d BRCMbcme.pkg and voila. My pc detected the network card.
    Then start configuring your network.
    It works for me. Hope it works for u.
    remember to read the readme file which come with the broadcom driver.

  • Photoshop CS6 13.0.4 Update - Icons look very strange/hazy

    Hi :-)
    I have installed the latest Update for Photoshop CS6 (13.0.4)...
    And now the Toolbar-Icons look very strange and hazy... :-/
    you can not see almost what are the symbols represent...
    for example the Spot Healingbrush etc...
    Is this a Bug, or the Icons are "re-designed" (but worse than before)...?

    Right at the end of the Hidden Gems workshop, one of the audience asked Brian Hughs if there any plans to accommodate high dpi displays for Windows systems, as with Retina Displays.  He said yes, but in a kind of offhand way that did not sound like anything was even remotely near to release.  Plus you are going to need a CC subscription when it is released.  As hardware gets ever better, that is a factor that is going to seriously compromise all those single app users who have sworn they will never go with CC.
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/max-2013/hidden-gems-in-adobe-photoshop-2/
    One thing that I immediately thought about was that with a CC subscription being cross platform, it would truly viable to own a Retina Mac Book Pro along with a Windows desktop system.  My Dell XPS M1710 is seven years old now!  I love the big 19 inch screen, and over the years it has had a much bigger HDD and maximum possible 4Gb RAM, but it a bit of a tired old Hector now.
    Does anyone here use both Windows and Apple systems, and is it a realistic proposition?

  • Strange Lagging in GNOME and KDE

    Hey there!
    I installed arch and Gnome (and later tried) on my desktop computer today and it worked free from lag for about one hour. Now it's behaving very strange, and I've been close to throwing my monitors out the window about 20 times.
    However, I don't know what's causing the problem and therefore don't know how to fix it. I will try to describe this mysterious lagging:
    Sometimes when I'm surfing the web with chromium (or using any other application so far) the windows kind of freeze. I'm unable to click anything in the window, and I can't go to the "Activities" in the top left corner. It always happens when I'm running the terminal (rxvt) and chromium at the same time. I can't change the focus of the windows by clicking on them, but I can change the focus by alt-tabbing.
    Can I debug this or something, cause now it's close to unusable? (I'm quite new to arch, so please don't reply with ultra-advanced maneuvers)

    My graphics card is a Nvidia GTX660, but I don't think it has to do with the graphics, since it's mostly the focus of the windows that isn't functioning properly. Sometimes when I'm in a program that I have focused, I can't even click anything in it (for example i can't scroll or click links in chromium).
    Here's my Xorg.0.log anyways:

  • Slow Taskbar Clock on Dell Optiplex 960

    I just installed Windows 7 RC Build 7100 32-bit version on 2 brand new right out of the box Dell Optiplex 960. This was a fresh install not an upgrade. The setup ran just fine. Windows boots up and runs but is sluggish and sometimes I have to wait for things to open. Such as running solitaire it is slow to deal the cards and even stops briefly.
    I also tried the 64-bit version but receive an error during the boot from DVD. Status 0xC00000e9. Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred.
    The cpu and memory usage are not high at all. I have also noticed that the time on the taskbar is running very slow. It takes about 45-50 seconds for one second of time to pass.
    I am wondering if maybe there is a driver issue with the machines. I have installed the Windows 7 video driver from the ATI site. I am not sure where to find a chipset driver for this computer. There are no red X's or other problems in the device manager.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Computer specs.
    Optiplex 960 Minitower
    Core 2 Quad Processor Q9650 (3.0GHz, 12M, 1333MHz FSB)
    4GB DDR2 Non-ECC SDRam 800MHz
    256MB ATI Radeon HD 3450
    320GB HD

    I wonder if xperf may show something about what's going on...
    Download and mount the Windows 7 RC1 SDK  ISO which contains xperf 4.5.  The MSI for the Windows Performance Toolkit appears to be in the \Setup\WinSDKTools_amd64\cab1.cab file.  Install the the Windows Performance Toolkit from there, and then, from an elevated CMD prompt change to the folder containing xperf.exe and execute:
     xperf -on DiagEasy+PROFILE  -stackwalk Profile
    Then, just after reproducing the problem, run:
     xperf –d merged.etl
    Then, ZIP merged.etl and password protect it.  Upload the ZIP file somewhere, and share the location either publicly or privately.  Share the password privately...   (My email address is in my profile.)

  • Very strange problems since upgrading.

    Ok, since I did a Pacman -Syu a week or so ago, I've been having some very strange issues.
    Number one, about 60-70% of the time I am completely unable to log into the box, I end up rebooting over and over to finally get the desktop environment to successfully load. It ran fine before. My rc.conf looks like this:
    LOCALE="en_US.utf8"
    HARDWARECLOCK="UTC"
    USEDIRECTISA="no"
    TIMEZONE="America/Los_Angeles"
    KEYMAP="us"
    CONSOLEFONT=
    CONSOLEMAP=
    USECOLOR="yes"
    MYTHCONFDIR="/home/mythtv"
    MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
    MODULES=(dm_mod fuse)
    USELVM="no"
    HOSTNAME="hosty"
    eth0="dhcp"
    eth1="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0 eth1)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.xxx.xxx"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond hal fam apcupsd httpd mysqld ntpd gdm)
    What will happen is gnomes new login screen (I assume it's gnomes new login screen anyway), will pop up, I'll log in by selecting name, entering password... all fine. Then the hard drive will go nuts for a second or so (expected), and I'll get an untitled window that pops up and says:
    unable to update ICEauthority file /home/user/.ICEauthority
    Which is strange, since to my understanding, I've never installed or used ICE. Then another window pops up with more information that I am unable to remember (too long). Then it will grind a bit, then stop at the same leaf background gnome startup used, then a final window will pop up complaining that Nautilus is unable to create the directories  "/home/user/Desktop" or "/home/user/.Nautilus".... which is complete horsecrap since those directories have existed on this hard drive for years now.
    Then it simply stops at the leaf background, and nothing else loads. So of course my first thought when I upgraded was, aw crap, X needs some work again. So I immediately do a {CTRL}-{ALT}-{F2} to get a bash prompt... and suddenly the plot thickens... I get nothing, just a blank screen with a cursor in the upper left. No bash login, nothing. So again I figure, ok, no big deal, I logged on F7, I'll just go back and kill X... I go back, still leaf screen, then hit {CTRL}-{ALT}-{BSPACE}... nothing. I can't kill X, and I can't get a bash login. I'm stuck. The only command that works is {CTRL}-{ALT}-{DEL}.
    So of course being the lazy bastard that I am, and this box being a MythTV box, I figure, no problem, I'll fix that later since if I reboot enough I can get logged in and everything is fine, I'll just leave it running like I always do. Except for last night when I decide to tackle the problem. I thought I was being very smart when I removed 'gdm' from the final daemon in /etc/rc.conf... until I realized that just left me with a computer that had booted, but NO BASH LOGIN PROMPT. Nothing, no way to control the computer at all. I was just sitting there watching my Mythbackend spit out notices and errors one by one, unable to get any sort of # or $. I managed to grab an old archlinux CDrom and use it to rescue the system by restoring an old /etc/rc.conf, but I have no understanding why I would not get a login prompt.
    So you see, I'm quite stuck. I cannot seem to get any sort of command-line login prompt without X running (terminal still works) to fix things. And 60-70% of the time, X/gnome will not finish starting up. Any help?

    a fscked /etc/inittab. Your output should look like this:

    c6:2345:respawn:/sbin/agetty -8 38400 tty6 linux
    Or this:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=80939
    I looked through that thread there, it sounds like a udev + kernel 31 issue? so I promptly did:
    $ uname
    Linux
    And suddenly became alarmed that I'm not seeing a linux version number. Why would this happen? I went through what fixed it for other people on that thread (renaming udev directories, reinstalling udev), and it hasn't made any difference, so I think this is a different issue.
    The other two suggestions in this thread would seem to be worthless since the /.ICEauthority file has the proper ownership/permissions.
    Still at a loss. wiping and reinstalling is not pretty on a mythbox with nearly a terrabyte of recorded TV.

  • Help with getting values from request. Very Strange!!

    Hello,
    My very strange problem is the following.
    I have created three dynamic list boxes. When the user select
    the first list box, the second becomes populated with stuff
    from a database. The third becomes populated when the second
    is selected. Now, I have used hidden values in order for
    me to get the selected value from the first listbox. The
    following code is my first listbox:
    <SELECT NAME="resources" onChange="document.hiddenform.hiddenObject.value = this.option [this.selectedIndex].value; document.hiddenform.submit();">
    <OPTION VALUE =""> Resource</OPTION>
    <OPTION VALUE ="soil"> Soil </OPTION>
    <OPTION VALUE ="water"> Water </OPTION>
    <OPTION VALUE ="air"> Air </OPTION>
    <OPTION VALUE ="plants"> Plants </OPTION>
    <OPTION VALUE ="animals"> Animals </OPTION>
    </SELECT>
    I use the getRequest method to get the value of hiddenObject.
    At this time I am able to get the value of hiddenObject to populate
    the second list box.
    But, when the user selects an item from the second list box
    and the second form is also submitted,
    I lose the value of hiddenObject. Why is this??
    The code to populate my second listbox is the following:
    <SELECT NAME ="res_categories" onChange="document.hiddenform2.hiddenObject2.value = this.options[this.selectedIndex].value; document.hiddenform2.submit(); ">
    <OPTION VALUE ="" SELECTED> Category</OPTION>
    Here I access a result set to populate the list box.
    Please help!!

    Form parameters are request-scoped, hence the request.getParameter("hiddenObject"); call after the submission of the second form returns a null value because the hiddenObject parameter does not exist within the second request.
    A solution would be to add a hiddenObject field to your second form and alter the onChange event for res_categories to read
    document.hiddenform2.hiddenObject.value=document.1stvisibleformname.resources.option[document.1stvisibleformname.resources.selectedIndex].value;
    document.hiddenform2.hiddenObject2.value = this.options[this.selectedIndex].value;
    document.hiddenform2.submit();You will then come across a similar problem with your third drop-down if indeed you need to resubmit the form...
    A far better approach would be to create a session scoped bean, and a servlet to handle these requests. Then when the servlet is called, it would set the value of the bean property, thus making it available for this request, and all subsequent requests within the current session. This approach would eliminate the need for the clunky javascript, making your application far more stable.

  • Apex giving installation problem on dell optiplex xe system

    Hi
    We have installed apex 4 on dell optiplex xe , but it display the source code when we use page forwared and backward of mozilla firefox. We also use the same versionon our laptpops and other non branded computer , it working fine.

    This case is similar to the case handled by Jurgen Keil on Digest Number 385 except that my case, it has a different error message.
    At the prompt "Select type of installation" (or the prompt
    "Select (b)oot or (i)nterpreter:", I type the command "b kadb -d". I see a General Protection Fault and some messages which cause the system to reboot. But I can't capture all the errors/messages cuz there's no system dump device configured.
    How do I configured the system dump device so I can send you more details?
    Thank you.

  • Address Book behaves very strange

    Hello members and outside viewers,
    First thing: My Address Book behaves very strange.
    - After startup, the window freezes. Only if I minimize and click again, works OK. I began used to it, BUT
    - Since yesterday, Addresses gone, disappeared from every entry.
    - Under Preferences » Address Format is uneditable, it has "Item3" in it, unclickable drop down menu.
    - Under Preferences »Template » Add Field several options are grey: "Phone", "Email", "Related Names", "Instant Messaging", "Address".
    Please can you help me! I deleted both plist files from Preferences folder and deleted the whole folder under Application Support/AddressBook, also reinstalled Address Book from Leopard DVD, but nothing helped so far.
    Second thing: when I invoke Spotlight, and start typing after 2-3 seconds, it quits and also Dock unusable, restarts automatically. Spotlight is useless, it behaves every time like this. Spotlight in Finder windows are OK, system-wide menubar has this error. Also, it was suddenly gone wrong like Address Book. Can I think of some virus?
    P.S. (off topic), might helpful to share: very frustating, that registering to Discussions took me over an hour.
    - With Safari 4.03 the "Name" and "AppleID" are blank fields on "Create New User Account", therefore impossible to proceed. ( Error: invalid AppleID. Please login with a different AppleID )
    - With Firefox you can actually see them, but "?" instead of accounted letters.
    - After changing My Info, I finally realised that Apple ID should be complete e-mail address.
    - That means my "visionfresh" account is totally different from "[email protected]" (or me.com, whatever..)
    - Not to mention that I created a new Apple ID, that was also not working.
    - Bottom line: my "[email protected]" account is working also in Safari after editing my Name (replace accented characters), but I could not proceed with the nickname "visionfresh", I chose "matyashuszar".

    My phone is saying all my storage for pictures is taken up when I only have 154 picture.. It happened when I got my screen fixed at a kiosk in a mall and I had 2,000 pictures when I gave it to him and when I got it back I had 0 but my wallpapers remained.. Very strange it's as if my phone still has the pictures on there.. But I can't see them. Anybody know what I should do :( I keep having to delete apps because I have no more storage for no reason :(((

    You may have to try deleting all the music from your phone (by going to Settings>General>Usage>Music, swipping All Music and tapping Delete), then sync it all back on with iTunes in order to fix this.
