Very strange Time Machine behavior

Lo,
Here is my situation. I have this brand new MacMini Server with two 500Gb internal drives. I have configured the second drive to be the Time Machine volume of the first drive. First drive contains Lion Server.
The initial backup went smoothly.
Oct  5 09:07:05 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Starting standard backup
Oct  5 09:07:05 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Backing up to: /Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Backups.backupdb
Oct  5 09:07:34 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Backup content size: 274.1 GB excluded items size: 74.3 GB for volume Server HD
Oct  5 09:07:34 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: 239.73 GB required (including padding), 410.13 GB available
Oct  5 09:07:34 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Waiting for index to be ready (101)
Oct  5 10:07:23 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Copied 134.9 GB of 199.8 GB, 635075 of 755583 items
Oct  5 10:29:50 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Copied 749494 files (197.9 GB) from volume Server HD.
Oct  5 10:33:40 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: 1.30 GB required (including padding), 210.02 GB available
Oct  5 10:40:15 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Copied 353532 files (73.0 MB) from volume Server HD.
Oct  5 10:46:39 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Starting post-backup thinning
Oct  5 10:46:39 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
Oct  5 10:46:39 macmini com.apple.backupd[30151]: Backup completed successfully.
That looks okay (200Gb in 1.5 hours) but above log already contains a sign of a problem. This gets more obvious with the subsequent incrementals:
Oct  5 10:53:59 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: Starting standard backup
Oct  5 10:53:59 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: Backing up to: /Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Backups.backupdb
Oct  5 10:58:26 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: 1.27 GB required (including padding), 209.82 GB available
Oct  5 11:05:07 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: Copied 353545 files (71.6 MB) from volume Server HD.
Oct  5 11:09:14 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: 1.28 GB required (including padding), 209.54 GB available
Oct  5 11:15:40 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: Copied 353545 files (76.1 MB) from volume Server HD.
Oct  5 11:22:16 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: Starting post-backup thinning
Oct  5 11:22:16 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
Oct  5 11:22:17 macmini com.apple.backupd[31344]: Backup completed successfully.
Euh? So it thinks it still needs to copy >350000 files (being 1.27 Gb) and in the end it only copied 76.1 Mb.
This now continues every hour:
Oct  5 12:20:08 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: Starting standard backup
Oct  5 12:20:08 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: Backing up to: /Volumes/Macintosh HD2/Backups.backupdb
Oct  5 12:24:39 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: 1.20 GB required (including padding), 209.25 GB available
Oct  5 12:31:22 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: Copied 353553 files (1.1 MB) from volume Server HD.
Oct  5 12:35:46 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: 1.20 GB required (including padding), 209.20 GB available
Oct  5 12:42:32 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: Copied 353557 files (629 KB) from volume Server HD.
Oct  5 12:48:56 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: Starting post-backup thinning
Oct  5 12:48:56 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: No post-back up thinning needed: no expired backups exist
Oct  5 12:48:57 macmini com.apple.backupd[32497]: Backup completed successfully.
Also note that it took 28 minutes to copy about 2 Mb.
I used TimeTracker to see what actually got copied and in fact it did copy about 2 Mb. Not 1.20 GB.
What could cause this behavior?
Marc.

Even if I exclude ~ (= /Users/<myname>) totally, it continues and even gets worse:
Oct  5 14:03:45 macmini com.apple.backupd[33635]: Starting standard backup

30 minutes for 700 KB...   134864 files ?????

    Is it possible to create an Automator workflow that would restore a Mac to its very first Time Machine snapshot?

    If that backup is still on your Time Machine drive, all you have to do is restore your entire system, selecting that backup. See #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
    If that backup has been deleted, no.
    Just what are you trying to accomplish, and why?

  • Very frequent Time Machine corruption since I upgraded to Mountain Lion

    Since I upgraded to Mountain Lion, I encounter very frequent Time Machine corruption.
    A few backups are OK, and then, I get an error "Time Machine has verified your backups and needs to create a new copy in order to enhance fiability...".
    In the console, I can see a lot of these errors :

    Everything has been working perfectly well on OSX Lion for months...
    I already have reselected my Time Machine volume, and already have accepted a full new backup (3 times !) and it always finish like this...
    Any idea ?

    I had the same general problem: every few minutes I would get the message "There was a problem connecting to the server 'myserver'. Contact your system administrator for more information."
    The problem went away for me when I reset the sync server.

    I hope this works for others as well.

  • Very Strange Internet Access Behavior After upgrade to systemd

    Currently I'm having very strange issues with my wireless connection. Currently, if I connect using netcfg to a wireless access point, I have the following behavior:
      1. chromium can connect to any website
      2. thunderbird can send/receive emails
      3. curl, firefox and opera can connect to some https sites but not http (yes: https://www.facebook.com, https://bbs.archlinux.org, no: https://archlinux.org, https://github.com)
      4. wget does not connect, neither does pacman -Syu
    after I upgraded to systemd, I was getting errors because of groups, so I removed extra groups. Here's what I have now:
    There is currently no rc.conf in /etc
    $ id ambantis
    uid=1000(ambantis) gid=100(users) groups=100(users)
    $ id root
    uid=0(root) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),1(bin),2(daemon),3(sys),4(adm),19(log),1000(wheel)
    If I try to remove the wheel group, then netcfg does not allow me to connect, neither can I connect manually with wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd
    Here's the output of $ systemctrl

    UPDATE:
    I've managed to make changes to the passwd file so that uuidd is in fact uuidd (instead of uuid). I've also gone through and restored the groups of postgres and tomcat. I'm still having the same behavior. After booting up, here are the new entries from /var/log/errors.log:

  • Very strange FF3/Opera behavior

    Hi there,
    I'm running XFCE & Compiz Fusion and encountered a very strange behavior when visiting a certain website with Firefox3. The website is http://www.cyberpunk-terminal.de/. Whenever I visit that site my whole Firefox gets transparent. When I switch to a different tab or close the tab, it's back to normal. It seems to have something to do with Compiz, since I can set the transparency of FF to 0 via Compiz-shortcuts.
    Does anybody else have the same experience?
    Edit: Same thing happens with Opera.

  • Strange time machine backups (duplicate?)

    Sorry to cross post this - I posted it initially in 'Time Capsule' by mistake:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1935448&tstart=0
    Thanks

    Here's the orignal post from the other thread (since this forum is more on-topic:
    I just set up one of the new 1TB Time Capsules and am backing up 3 machines to it. Everything seems to work.
    However, my Mac Pro takes FOREVER to back up each time, and a look at the logs shows that its backup up roughly 1GB each time (every hour) that Time Machine runs. This doesn't make any sense because if it's been asleep all night, and I wake it in the morning, it backs up ~1GB. If it's been asleep for a couple of hours during lunch, and I wake it, Time Machine backs up ~1GB once it runs. Even if the system has literally sat idle for the hour between the last Time Machine backup and now, it seems to want to copy ~1GB each and every backup.
    Not only that, but it copies almost an identical amount from both drives in the Mac Pro each and every time.

    Almost the identical number of files to copy from each of the two drives, which makes no sense - they contain totally different data.

    Mar 9 13:33:21 MacPro /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd560: Copied 642 files (3.9 MB) from volume Work HD.
    Am I just reading the logs wrong, and this is normal, or does this seem odd to anyone else?
    The only thing I'm explicitly excluding from backups is my Parallels directory, which is also the only thing I can think of that would cause such large amounts of data to need to be backed up each and every time. I don't have any filesharing/P2P software installed (another possible culprit).
    The Mac Pro backups have been like this since as soon as the initial backup was done - ~1GB for each drive every hour that Time Machine runs for this computer.
    If very little is basically changing on my system (at least not hourly) why are these backups so large, and why are they of almost identical amounts from both drives?

  • Very slow Time Machine!

    I have no issues with backing up files with Time Machine, but when i try to activate it to restore a file it takes forever to load. It literally takes a minute or two for the "space" theme to pop up, etc. My Mac isn't old or slow, and everything loads just fine, even applications that take more resources like iMovie/iPhoto with a lot of projects/photos load fine. I've tried searching here, and Googled looking for a fix. Any ideas? Help!

    It literally takes a minute or two for the "space" theme to pop up, etc.
    There's a HUGE amount of data to be transmitted when you open Time Machine, far more than running a number of normal applications.
    You aren't trying to do this using wireless, are you?
    If you need to access Time Machine, connect an ethernet cable from your computer to one of the LAN ports on your Time Capsule. Things will go much faster than wireless only, and you'll minimize the chances of any errors due to wireless interference.

  • New hard drive - odd Time Machine behavior

    Hi,
    I just had my failing HD replaced in my Macbook Pro 17" - The tech. that did it restored from the last good Time Machinr backup to the new HD, and everyrhing seems to work fine. So I then tried to do a full backup of the new HD to a brand new external HD. The first time it stopped about half way through, and yet when I enter Time Machine on the Mac, all the files seem to be there.  Then I added a few new photo files, and am now doing another Time Machine backup. But it says it's now backing up 102.95 Gigs (total on HD is 292.07 Gigs). The Time Machine preference pane doesn't seem to recognize the earlier backup (see screenshot) and yet when I enter Time Machine, it's apparently all there. How can I tell if it's working correctly?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "backupd" (without the quotes) in the String Matching text field. Post the messages from the last backup, beginning with "Starting standard backup."
    Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.
    Some personal information, such as the names of your files, may be included — edit that out, too, but don’t remove the context.

  • Very slow Time Machine Initial Backup to Leopard Server on Xserve with RAID

    I'm having trouble backing up my iMac to my Xserve running leopard with dual drobos as my time machine drives
    So here is the setup:
    Server: Xserve (dual quad 2.8 xeons) backing up to Drobo array with 4x1tb drives running (dual drobos on server) fully patched 10.5 server with 16gb/RAM (showing 8gb free)
    Network: 1gbs via catalyst switches on essentially unloaded segment (a couple of folks reading emails)
    Source Machine: iMac 24" 3.06 Core2Duo with 8gb RAM
    Most important fact: nothing has changed on the server (other than usual updates)
    Doing an initial backup of the iMac over the network, and getting peak of about 100Kb/sec, and much of the time it seems to have stalled. Given that the machine has like 230GB to backup, this is going to take a real long while. When I query activity monitor on both the client and Xserve, they are both virtually idle with all resources free (lots of free RAM/Disk/CPU). Neither machine is running any apps right now during the test (other than filesharing, but nobody is using as the office is empty today)
    Now one thing to note is the staggering number of files (iPhoto library is ~120gb and holds over 500,000 files [faces?]) giving a total of 1.2M files.
    As a point of testing, copied a 500mb quicktime movie to same partition, took <5 seconds.

    Should I be concerned that the TimeMachineBuddy widget is producing tons of error messages in the system console (and doesn't seem to work)

  • Odd Time Machine Behavior Since Mountain Lion Installed

    I have used Time Machine to back up to a three-month-old Time Capsule (named 2012 TC) without problems until I updated my iMac to Mountain Lion.
    Now, when I awaken my computer from sleep I often (not always) receive an alert window which says:
    “Time Machine couldn’t complete the backup to ‘2012 TC’.”
    The alert window then goes on to say:
    “The backup disk is not in the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format, which is required’.”
              and
    “Open Time Machine preferences to select a different backup disk.”
    And then offers a button to “Open Time Machine Preferences.”
    The alert window goes away after some seconds, and if I restart Time Machine backup it seems to work OK. I do seem to be getting proper backups.
    This did not occur with Lion, and has only happened since my upgrade to Mountain Lion (including its latest upgrade OS 10.8.1). My Time Capsule is in exactly the same format as before, which was set automatically when I connected it to Time Machine months ago.
    What’s going on? Is there a problem? Is there something I should do to fix this?

    I have the same problem too and have provided feedback to Apple so hopefully they can fix the bug. I suggest you add your voice too:

  • Strange time stamp behavior in kernel log

    While I was trying to find out a little hang time during boot process on my laptop I found a strange behavior of the logging time stamp. From the logging beginning it keeps the time for lots of messages. So it´s not possible to benchmark or compare some little tweaks

    I use ntpd but this seems not to be related to the use of ntpd. Should be a little bug or missconfiguration. And I have this on several computers and archuser "ise" has it too. Also with different kernel versions. Any idea?

    Andy said it already, my log looks the same. It's even more messages with the same timestamp on my computer. I use the 2.6.14archck kernel from aur  on my laptop and the 2.6.13 from current on my desktop.
    My computers don't hang on startup, only the timestamp is confusing.

  • Very strange macbook power behavior

    Hi!
    I have a white macbook CoreDuo 2G.
    A week ago the light from the power adapter's magsafe connection went off and the computer stopped getting power.
    A few hours before this, I had a very minor incident. Some tea got spilled on the table and reached the bottom of the computer. Only the plastic case was wet, I removed the battery and everything looked very dry inside. However, some minor drops reached the connectors, but I quickly wiped them.
    The laptop worked fine for a few hours, before I noticed the magsafe's light off.
    I've tested the power adapter and the battery and they worked fine on another computer. Then I changed the magsafe board connector (from inside the macbook) with a new one.
    Now the macbook has a weird power "behavior":
    - When I connect the magsafe with the battery inside the laptop, the computer gets no power.
    - If I remove the battery, the light turns green. If I put the battery back, it will charge normally.
    Basically the power doesn't get to the computer unless the battery is removed when the magsafe is connected.
    Like I said I tested the battery and, beside the fact that is at 60% capacity, it works fine on another computer.
    Do you have any idea what can cause this and how can I fix it?
    Thank you.

    Something new just happen. I have a big X in the battery icon.

  • Very strange  Viber's behavior under iOS 5.1.1..

    Hello guys,
    I don't know if someone of you have already experienced this, but I have some strange problems with Viber.
    The core of the problem is that Viber keeps ringing for several seconds after the answer.  The interesting part is that this occurs only if I do answer from the Springboard and NEVER if I pick the call up from the lockscreen. Once I turn the option "view on lockscreen" off under notifications - everything become in order again, no ringing after picking up, but I loose the advantage of having lockscreen's notifications.
    What can be the reason of this problem?
    I am using iOS 5.1.1

  • Strange Timer class behavior

    I got following problem: when i create new Timer object with default "repeatCount" = 0 argument and fire my timer it doesn't work ! if i test it with any other value it works. Added some traces to see what's going on but everything seems to work ok so i'm confused. Here is my simple class
    public final TestService
         public function TestService():void
              _timer = new Timer(5000);
              _timer.addEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER_COMPLETE,refreshTest,false,0,true);
              trace(_timer.currentCount); // says 0
              trace(_timer.hasEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER_COMPLETE)); // says true
              _timer.start();
              trace(_timer.running); // says true
         private var _timer:Timer;
         private function refreshTest(event:TimerEvent):void
              trace("timer works");
    As i said when with default repeatCount=0 refreshTest function is never reached, when i change it to 1 or sth it suddenly works ! Am i missing something ?
    I know i can get around it easily but it drives me NUTS that it doesn't work like it should ! Any ideas ? i'm on flex SDK 4.1 btw but i should point when i change it to other it doesn't work either

    According to the documentation, Timer dispatches the following events -
    Event
    Summary
    timer
    Dispatched whenever a Timer object reaches an interval specified according to the Timer.delay property.
    timerComplete
    Dispatched whenever it has completed the number of requests set by Timer.repeatCount.
    It seems like you need the timer event rathar then the timerComplete event...

  • Very slow Time Machine MacBook Pro Mid 2009

    After installing Mavericks Back-up for my MacBook has become very slow. I checked firmware update as recommended by some, but that was rejected by the application provided for by Apple. Also a larger back-up device did not do the job. To back up 1.15 GB took about 30 mins. Before a back-up would take just minutes or maybe 1 hour, if I had not backed up for some days.
    Any ideas?

    Running Virtual Box and based on the number of 'Page Outs' swaps more RAM would be useful.  Your MBP will accept up to 8 GB RAM with the following specifications: 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    Ciao.
