Very unresponsive UI on WSUS 3.0 server

I have a Windows 2008 R2 server running WSUS 3.0 SP2 and I have noticed that the performance when trying to pull up reports is just incredibly painful and sometimes it can't pull up a report on a machine at all.  I ran the server cleanup and that
removed about 14GB worth of old unneeded updates, which freed up some space.  I also tried the reindex the WSUS DB powershell script that some people suggested in other threads and it did make it a bit more responsive, but it hasn't completely eliminated
timeouts when opening reports on some clients.  The WSUS DB is 12GB, which for ~25 clients sounds like an awful lot of space.  I tried connecting to it with a local SQL Server instance to see if it was possible to shrink the DB, but that didn't make
much of a dent as there didn't appear to be much whitespace to remove.  I started and stopped the Windows Internal Database as I have seen periodically that makes a difference in performance with MS SQL Server, but that didn't make a huge difference either.
The server only has 4GB of RAM.  Would bumping it up to 8-16GB of RAM make much of a difference?

Hi,
A 12 GB database is really nightmare. How did you configure products and classifications? Do you have auto approval rules?
In general, we need decline the unneeded updates and then run cleanup wizard. Here is a  similar thread and there is detail steps in it:

  • Wsus 6.3 - Server 2012 R2 - Update downloads very slow - no proxy is use

I have WSUS 6.3.9600.16384 installed on Server 2012 R2 and downloads are very slow, < 500 Kbps.
A proxy server is not in use and updates are downloading, but very slowly.
Plenty of BW available, consistent 60 Mbps internet download speed test results.
Current download setting is set to "on approval".
Has anyone had a similar problem and hopefully found a solution?

My macbook pro is running very slow with some strange mouse and window movements. The trackpad is very unresponsive and when responding the cursor moves on its own and/or very erratically. When on safari the window suddenly zooms in or highlights words and looks them up via dictionary. I currently have a wireless mouse connected and I am still having the same problems.
I fee like I may have a virus or my laptop is perhaps being accessed remotely. All of the sharing options are unchecked.
    HELP PLEASE
    Very worried!!

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
    1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
        b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and
after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears.
Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).
    4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.2 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 Update (Combo).

  • Computers not appearing in WSUS downstream replica server

    Hello guys,
I need your advice on the setup of the replica servers. I currently installed a WSUS replica downstream server on one of our locations for the clients/servers in the same place to get the updates locally.
Now we are on Server 2012, on this box has WDS service working and I have decided to setup a WSUS replica here. So added WSUS role & SSL is enabled, so ports 8531 & 8530 are allowing traffic on the replica server. Now synching works fine with the
upstream server as far as updates & computer GROUPS were synch fine. Now the issue, is the computers are not showing up in the computer groups for the replica server in contrast with the upstream which has the computers. What could  be the reason?
I have configured already the GPO for the clients intended to get updates for the replica, client side targeting & "Specify a MS intranet location..." is configured with the REPLICA servername:port. Am I missing anything? Please help..
    Thank you, Mon

    Hi Mon Laq,
Please check your upstream and downstream server have any event occur, the client which not reporting must have error log.
Check if name resolution is working for parent server from this replica server, GPO were not applied correctly, please to confirm the sync between the upstream
and downstream server is working properly,

  • WSUS 6 upstream server will support WSUS 3 SP2 downstream server or not

In our company WSUS upstream server operating system is windows 2012 r2. I would like to know can we install downstream server in windows 2008 r2 (WSUS 3.0 sp2) it will download approved patches from upstream server.
WSUS 6 upstream server will support WSUS 3.0 SP2 downstream or not?

No post-installation instruction in the KB article.
Then you should READ the article again. Let me help:
    How to apply this update
We recommend that you synchronize all WSUS servers after you apply this update. If you have a hierarchy of WSUS servers, apply this update, and then synchronize your servers from the top of the hierarchy on down. To synchronize your servers in this manner,
    follow these steps:
Note Before computers that are running Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 can be updated by WSUS 3.2 servers, you must complete these steps.
Start the process with WSUS 3.0 SP2 that synchronizes with Microsoft Update.
    Apply this update.
    Start a synchronization.
Wait for the synchronization to succeed.
Repeat steps 2 through 4 for each WSUS 3.0 SP2 server that synchronizes to the server that you just updated.
    Known issues with this update
If you have Windows 8 or Windows Server 2012 clients that synchronized with WSUS 3SP2 before you applied this update, wait for the update to be applied to the WSUS servers, and then follow these steps:
On the affected client, open cmd.exe in elevated mode
Type the following commands. Make sure that you press Enter after you type each command:
    Net stop wuauserv
    rd /s %windir%\softwaredistribution\
    Net start wuauserv

  • CAS with WSUS(SUP)upstream server connected with microsoft for updates and 3 downstream servers Primary with WSUS(sup)

    hi aaa
WSUS in the same site server with sccm but we have one cas and three primary with WSUS
how much traffic will generate due to this process , as our CAS with WSUS will be in the same box and it will provide updates to downstream Servers in three primary sites. IS it good to have WSUS and site server together as we have SQL in different box for
    all three primary and CAS.

     Hi Torsen
35000 clients with CAS 16GB memory and  300GB Hard disk same for all primary sites
Germany with 6000 clients ,norway with china with 15000 clients and UK with 10000clients
As the client wanted to Use CAS ,we have created CAS otherwise it could be standalone primary site.
CAS in China with each region having Primary site so we have three primary.

  • CPU peaks 35-40% while loading page - very unresponsive

After upgrading to 10.0.2 my browser has become very unresponsive while loading pages/opening blank tabs.
I've already tried safe mode with all plugins deactivated and a full reinstall.
My plugins are up to date, I do not use custom themes and it doesn't matter what kind of page I'm loading. Seems like its the engine itself.
Running a Win7 x64 notebook - I did not have this issues before the latest update.

It would be worth experimenting with turning Hardware Acceleration on and off. If you have HA enabled but it is not working properly it is likely to cause problems. (If you are using FlashPlayer video that has its own controls for setting HA on or off). To turn HA off in ordinary browsing use
    * Firefox Button -> Options -> | Advanced | -> | General | -> [] Use Hardware acceleration when available
** see [[Options window - Advanced panel]]
    * you may also wish to see if the Graphics drivers will update
** see [[How do I upgrade my graphics drivers?]]
    * you may also be interested in this article, including a test that you can run <br/>http://hacks.mozilla.org/2010/09/hardware-acceleration/
It is looking like some of the problems could relate more to the system, than to Firefox.

    Regards

The reason these solutions all work is because previously these machines were WSUS CLIENTS, and thus looking to the (sometimes no longer present) WSUS SERVER to find the WSUS Dynamic Installer update.
By unlinking the GPO or moving the server to the Computer Container (not OU, btw), you effectively revert that machine to being an Automatic Updates client, and it can then obtain the WSUS Dynamic Installer update from Automatic
    Updates.
You can also achieve this objective by:
    1. Run gpupdate /force (to reset the 90 minute GPRefresh timer).
    2. Edit the registry and set the HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU "UseWUServer" value to ZERO, which also disables the machine as a WSUS Client.
From there you'll have at least sixty minutes (minimum GPrefresh interval) to install the WSUS Role, after which the machine will automatically revert back to the previous "WSUS Client" status -- which, presumably, is to be a client of itself.

  • WSUS issue on server 2012 - Failing to update and have to set WinHTTP set

Very new to 2012 with little knowledge on the product
We have been seeing an issue for a while where we need to set the WinHTTP proxy in order for servers to correctly check in for WSUS and download patches.  This has been set in the Windows 2008 R2 build so hasn't been an issue before. e.g.
However with Windows Server 2012 R2, setting the WinHTTP proxy causes some issues. With Exchange 2013 the PowerShell console does not connect with this set so we need a way around this.
It seems as if the we use the FQDN in the GPO it then tries to go out to the internet thinking that the FQDN is an internet address and then blocked by the proxy so hence we had to create the proxy set on the server. We don't want to have to set WinHTTP
on every 2012 servers as this would be very time consuming and will become un-manageable. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
What is the version of your WSUS? I suppose windows server 2012 is newly added in your network and the WSUS server is not patched.
An update for Windows Server Update Services 3.0 Service Pack 2 is available (KB2734608)
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2734608
    Hope this helps.

  • Lion Preview and Textedit very slow when opening files from Leopard Server

My small office (about 10 users) recently upgraded our iMac's, Mac Mini's, and Macbook Pro's.  We are experiencing a big problem with Preview opening super slow (1-2 minutes) when trying to open JPG's, PDF's, etc from our 10.5.8 Leopard Server.  We have deleted numerous plist files related to Preview, completely deleted Preview.app from one iMac and reinstalled it via Pacifist and still no change in performance.  One of the new iMac's does open much faster than the others, but we cannot figure out why this one machine works well and the others don't.
All machines are showing the below error (dozens of times) in Console when trying to open files directly from the server...
    sandboxd:  ([###])  Preview(###) deny system-fsctl
We have searched the internet for a solution but have not come up with anything that works.  This problem exists with Textedit as well.  We did try opening a file from one Lion machine to the other and it opened very fast.  We also can open files very quickly from older 10.4.11 Tiger machines directly from the server.  So the best we can determine right now is Lion and Leopard Server are not playing nicely together.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"Enable Related Files" isn't the fix for this issue. It's slightly different - I wanted to still load related files, but only the ones local to the file I was editing.
The fix was to use DW's Resolve To IP Address feature. It required adding a registry value - it fixed the issue straight away

  • WDS, DHCP and WSUS on same server, Virtuals find WDS and start up process, Physicals get PXE-X55 error.

I have a Windows 2012 R2 server that has the WSUS, WDS and DHCP roles installed. I also have a SCVMM (Win2012R2) server on different machine and it has been connected to the WDS server
Followed many different guides on the internet to configure the WDS server but if I have option 60 configured the virtual machines will find and do a PXE boot successfully, but the physical systems will fail with a E55 error.
I take out option 60 and both fail.
Did I miss a niggly bit some where?

Have you tried this (from article):
    Custom-made Option 60 – String – PXEClient
Predefined Option 66 – IP or Hostname of the WDS Server (in our case 10.150.150.1)
    Predefined Option 67 – boot\x86\wdsnbp.com
    and this in WDS properties:
    and
Many people remark this as solution:

    its througing the error message.

Could you please help me any one on this issue .........?
Not any more than I already have....
You should look in the IIS logs for the WSUS v-root and determine exactly which type of HTTP 401 error this is.
If you don't understand about Internet Information Services (IIS), there are thousands of available resources -- and understanding how to use, administer, and manage IIS is a core skill required to
manage a WSUS server. I would start at http://www.iis.net.
Talking with the person who actually installed IIS on the WSUS server is also a good idea, including ensuring that it was configured as documented in the WSUS Deployment Guide:

  • Very large files checkin to DMS/content server

    Dear experts,
We have DMS with content server up and running.
However, there is a problem with very large files (up to 2GB!) - these files cannot be checked in due to extremely long upload times and maybe GUI limitations.
Does anyone have suggestions how we could get very large files into the content server ? I only want to check them in (either via DMS or directly to the content server) and then get the URL back.
    best regards,
    Johannes

    Hi Johannes,
unfortunatly there is a limit for files regarding the Content Server which is about 2GB. Please note that such large files will cause very long upload times. If possible I would recommend you to split the files to smaller parts and try to check it in.
From my point of view it is not recommended to put files directly on the Content Server, because this could lead to inconsistencies on the Content Server.
    Best regards,
    Christoph

  • WSUS in Windows Server 2012 R2 is not downloading update files.

I'm not using Proxy server and this is the only WSUS server in our environment and update source is to sync from Microsoft Update site.
Synchronization completes successfully and every update files is not downloading. When I look at the download status from the main page, it said it downloaded, but when I look at the files from updates folder, it said failed to download.
    I'm getting following error messages:
    Content file download failed.
Reason: The server does not support the necessary HTTP protocol. Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) requires that the server support the Range protocol header.

    Hi,
This is most likely a problem with a proxy server or firewall. Since you don’t have a proxy server, then firewall could be the culprit.
Error message when you try to download a file by using the Background Intelligent Transfer Service: "Content file download failed"
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922330
Make sure your firewall support HTTP 1.1 range requests. If it still doesn’t help, try the following workaround:
If you are unable resolve this issue from the proxy/firewall side, then try these steps as a workaround on the WSUS server,
Set BitsDownloadPriorityForeground=1 using osql.exe on WSUS SQL instance.
    net stop WSUSservice
    CD "%ProgramFiles%\Update Services\tools\osql"
    osql.exe -S <SQL instance name> -E -b -n -Q "USE SUSDB update tbConfigurationC set BitsDownloadPriorityForeground=1"
    net start WSUSservice
