Very unstable powerbook, sleep problem

I'm having a hard time figuring this one out. When I try to wake my power book from sleep, the pulsing led stops blinking and it appears to wake, but the screen will not turn on. After holding the power button to force a shut down, if I try to restart, I can hear the hard drive spinning but still nothing on the screen. The really weird part is when I run it in target mode, everything works fine, including the screen, which displays the blue screen with the fire wire logo. About one in every 10 restarts will boot normally, until the powebook sleeps, then the problem starts all over again. Thanks in advance for any help,
Don

I'm having a similar problem, but with the catch that my display is going to sleep even when the computer isn't. I've had a problem occasionally (i.e. not more than once a week, probably less than that) in the past with similar symptoms--the computer seems to wake based on lack of pulsing light and presence of audible hard drive activity, but the screen remains black. However, it's gotten worse lately, and the screen now goes black sometimes without the computer going to sleep. If I then close the lid (to put the computer to sleep), open it and hit a few keys to wake the computer, I get the screen to come back on about 50% of the time. The only thing I've found to work consistently is to SSH in (I've turned remote access on specifically to deal with this issue), issue a 'sudo pmset force displaysleep 1', wait over a minute, and issue a 'sudo pmset force displaysleep 0'. (pmset is the command-line utility to control sleep behavior) I haven't found anything that will allow me to issue a "wake up now, dang it!" command, so the pmset drill (setting display sleep time to one minute, waiting more than a minute, and setting it to zero) is the only way I've found to deal with it. However, it's getting really freaking annoying at this point, as the workaround means at least a minute of downtime each time it happens.

  • Powerbook sleep problem

I own a powerbook G4 al (15") and I also have a sleep problem: my powerbook won't go to sleep when I close the lid or when i selectd Stop from the Apple menu.
Now, this wasn't happening in panther (10.3.9) nor in tiger until 10.4.2. I have installed updates one by one from 10.4 and found out that update 10.4.3 had something to do with my problem (doesn't matter if I use Software Updates or if i use combo updates).
I tried repairing permission, resetting the various nvram, pmu, ... but without success.
Also updated to 10.4.4 but the problem remain.
I installed 10.4.2 on another partition and there everything is working fine.
What is different in os x 10.4.3 and 10.4.4 from 10.4.2 that could cause this?
    Every suggestion is welcome!!!

    Hi.
    Hmmm...
    1. You wrote: "-in my other partition (system 10.4.2) i can run the maintenance script (via terminal, launchd etc), after updating to 10.4.3 an error is reported (file non found etc)"What is the exact text of the message (in English, please ;-)).
    2. You wrote: "(i read somewhere that those maintenance scripts could solve my sleep problem, so i tried them)"That information is incorrect. The maintenance scripts merely prune and rotate a collection of log files. If a rogue process is constantly writing messages to one of the Console logs, that can prevent idle sleep, which is why I asked about Canon and HP peripherals.
    3. OK, so there's no scanner or printer. Are there any peripherals attached? PC Cards (nee PCMCIA cards) installed?
    4. Here's some things to try:4.1 First, As a general check, run the procedure specified in my "Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption" FAQ. Perform the steps therein in the order specified. This will rule out some common troublemakers.
4.1 Trash all preferences related to Energy Saver:4.1.1. Quit System Preferences if it is open.
4.1.2. Open the Computer > Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration folder and trash the following two files therein:
    - com.apple.AutoWake.plist
    - com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
You'll probably be prompted for your Admin password when you trash these files.
    4.1.3. Empty the Trash.
4.1.4. Launch System Preferences and reset the Energy Saver preferences accordingly.4.3. See if a rogue Startup or Login Item may be the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.5. Not sure exactly what model of PowerBook you have, but if it is one of the "Double-Layer SD" models see:
    - "Don't move a PowerBook G4 (Double-Layer SD) for a moment after putting it to sleep"; and
    - "About the PowerBook G4 sleep indicator light status."
    Good luck!

  • Powerbook sleep problems, please help.

lately, my one year old powerbook is acting strange. my powerbook does not sleep (or the sleep light does not light when the book is idle). even if i set the powerbook to sleep after 3 mins of inactivity.
I check the Apple's website, and i read about the power management unit reset,. And when i tried it, it went normal like before, but after a day, it won't sleep again, (or the sleep light won't light again.)
I can use my powerbook normally, but the sleep light bothers me. anybody else experiencing the same thing?
or is there anything i can do? or should i have it check?

perhaps your system is merely idling as opposed to actually going to sleep. have you actively set it to sleep, either by clicking 'Sleep' in the upper left menu, or by doing the option-command-eject keystroke, or are you simply allowing the energy saver to sleep the system (which could be hung up by some background program, which is unlikely, but might be a consideration)? give that a shot, and if it still doesn't work, then you may just have to manually sleep your system from now on in order to know that is actually is sleeping (due to the lack of the light as an indicator).

  • Fixing my slow sleep problem

I have been having problems with my MacBook taking a fairly long time before going to sleep. In attempting to fix the problem I have tried repairing permissions, resetting PRAM, Safe Boot mode, cleaning the system with MacJanitor, etc. In some cases the system seem to work better, but eventually the slow sleep problem reappeared.
I did further searching and found references to checking what the system was doing before going to sleep using the System Console. I tried this and found a variety of error messages being logged that didn't seem normal. With further investigation I found a number of problems related to remnants of old programs still affecting my system when they should have been removed some time ago.
I started to track down and remove items manually such as no longer used prefpanes. I found items in the Launch Agents and Launch Daemons directories that shouldn't have been there. I even found an old kernel extension (SideTrack.kext) that was somehow transferred from my old Powerbook to my new MacBook. There were also .plist items hanging around that weren't needed - so I removed them too.
After using the Console to identify problems in my system and then track down and remove all the old program remnants, my MacBook seems to be its old self again. It goes to sleep very quickly and the overall performance of the system seems improved. So, if you're having sleep issues or other problems I'd suggest having a look at the System Console to help identify the problems.

The sleep time before the fix was in the 20-30 sec. range. The sleep time after getting things fixed is about 1-2 sec. or so.

  • Power Mac G4 sleep problem

    Hello!
My G4 (mdd) won't go to sleep anymore. Neither on its own via energy saver nor when you press the power button or select sleep in the apple menu. Does anyone know what to do?
I already unplugged my USB devices, didn't help. Then I trashed my energy saver and bluetooth preferences and reset PRAM by pressing <commandoption+PR> at startup, no luck. I read all the previous posts about this issue and did everything they said, but it didn't help.
maybe someone has an additional suggestion.
    Thank you!
    David
Power Mac G4 (mdd) 867 dual   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

A number of sleep-related issues can appear after incremental Mac OSX updates, including the inability to properly go to sleep, problems waking from sleep, and having your display go to sleep without your Mac going to sleep. The most common culprit is Bluetooth. Try these tips to fix your sleep problems.
    WAKE UP
In System Preferences>Bluetooth, uncheck Allow Bluetooth Devices To Wake This Computer. If you are using a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, you'll have to wake your Mac by pressing the power button.
    FILE CORRUPTION
Your Bluetooth preference file may be corrupt-you'll need to delete it. Turn Bluetooth off, then go to the /Users/user name/Library/Preferences folder. Look for a file called com.apple.Bluetooth.plist and trash it.The OS will create a new preference file when you enable Bluetooth again.
    ENERGY SAVER
If you have issues with a Mac or display that goes to sleep at inappropriate times, you may have a problem with Energy Saver. Delete the following .plist files and restart:
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.PowerManagement.plist
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name).
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists. After a reboot your Mac will then generate new ones.
In some cases, running MacOS X's cron tasks-maintenance that the OS performs automatically if you leave your Mac on 24 hours a day-can resolve many sleep problems. If you don't want to leave your Mac on, you can use MacJanitor, Yasu, or OnyX free at Versiontracker.com.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.3.9 combo update. Others here would use the one for their version.
    Cheers!

A number of problems exist including the likelihood of system corruption as a result of using CleanMyMac.
It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.
There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.
Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.
Besides CleanMyMac2, garbage "cleaning" and "anti-virus" software exists, specifically "Avast", "Smith Micro", and "Symantec / Norton". Those products should not be installed on any Mac, because they convey no benefit and are only capable of creating or contributing to problems.
In addition, that Mac's Hosts file appears to have been modified. Fixing a modified Hosts file requires specific instructions. Apple Support Communities contributor and EtreCheck author etresoft recently added a User Tip discussing that concern, and how to correct it: Fixing a hacked /etc/hosts file
The recovery procedure that follows will obviate the need to correct all those separate problems and is likely to require the least amount of your time and interaction.
Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.
To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X
To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.

  • Iphone 4 running 4.3.5 wifi very unstable/will not connect to network

Hi all iPhone users. Im new to this so please bear with me. I have an iPhone 4 (had for about 1 month or so). I have recently updated to the new 4.3.5 software. Sice then, my wifi seems to be very very unstable. Im only about 10ft from my router and when I go to connect, I get an error saying 'unable to join network'. I previously had an iphone 3gs and that connected fine further away.
When my iphone 4 does connect, the connection lasts about 10-15 secs and then it will not load any web pages although it shows its connected. I have tried all methods on previous threads but nothing seems to work. Ive also tried retting my router and changing the wifi channel to make the signal stronger but nothing seems to work.
Ive seem some threads where people have 'put them in the freezer' but im not willing to do that as the phone is only a month old. Ive tried the network reset, the hard reset, re-installing itunes and trying the update again but it nothing seems to work.
Any help or advise would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi folks,
    SOLVED
iPhone 4 wasn't having any joy (and neither was my new 4s).
Tried turning OFF the security on the router, connecting the iPhones (yep, they connected OK) then turning on the security (WPA2-PSK [AES]) and both iPhones still connected.
So, it looks like this is the way to solve a non-connecting iPhone 4/4s with a Netgear WiFi router.
Hope this helps others with the same problem.
    Regards

  • Leopard sleep problem which seems related to Entourage 2008...

    Hi all,
I have a MBP (3,1) running 10.5.2 and I noticed about 3 months ago that if I left the lid open the energy saver triggered sleep wouldn't kick in (very hot laptop next morning syndrome).
I've read a number of other threads on Leopard auto-sleep problems (which pointed to the HP AIO frameworks) but this doesn't appear to be the same issue I have...
If I quit Entourage 2008 then the computer will sleep after the correct period of time - and that's with no other changes to my normal use. Of course I'd like to not have to worry about quitting Entourage each time I might, maybe, just possibly not be back at the computer for a while.
Now in the system log I do keep getting the following strange entries:
    /Applications/Microsoft Office 2008/Microsoft Entourage.app/Contents/MacOS/Microsoft Entourage[914]: Warning: accessing obsolete X509Anchors.
I have no idea what this really does and I do appear to have such a file in the system called X509Anchors...
If I switch Entourage to Offline mode then the entries don't appear in the system log anymore but... the unit still won't sleep. It requires Entourage not to be running it seems.
Having not seen anything else on the discussions forum relating to Entourage 2008 preventing auto-sleep I'm beginning to wonder whether it's just me?!?
Anyone else seeing this effect? And most importantly, does anyone know of a fix?
I have tried the NMS sleep utility stuff and although it worked perfectly whilst I was testing it using Energy saver timings of 1 minute... as soon as I upped the time back to my usual 30 minutes for CPU sleep it failed to work again.
    Any help much appreciated.

Ok two things based on the crash report and the steps you took right before the crash:
    # Try to disable scrolling acceleration and restart Firefox. Does it continue to crash?
    # Try Safe Mode and do the same task as above with email and the pdf [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]]
    # Also pdf.js may be helpful to read pdfs in the meantime. You can change the default reader in the Preferences/Options > Application menu of Firefox.
    # Try to clear out the downloads folder and update flash to version 14 (that should do it)
IF it crashes again please also provide the new crash signatures and we can take a look :-) Sorry for the crashing :-(

  • Has anyone noticed that Messages (iChat) is very unstable on OS 10.8.3?

I have a 27 inch iMac i5 with 4 GB of RAM. Since upgrading to OS 10.8.3, Messages (iChat) has become very unstable, freezing at least once or twice a day. This behavior is mainly associated with my sending iMessages to iPhone users. The problem is solved by force quitting and re-starting the app. The activity monitor shows the app to be consuming several hundred megabytes of memory when this happens, and the computer slows down considerably, but remains responsive. No other apps have become unstable.
My internet searches are too poorly worded to be of use--searching for "messages" or "ichat" does not yield any results or even any discussion of this kind of unstability. Any thoughts?

    peteangus wrote:
Thank you all, a reset all settings cleared up the problem, however I have now lost all my wi-fi passwords.
If you reset all settings then your passwords for Wi-Fi will have been cleared. You will need to enter them again for each Wi-Fi network you connect to.

  • New Mac Book: very unstable on several apps???

    Hi all,
I just bought my gf a brand new macbook, so she could change from a crappy toshiba with windows to osx.
After a few weeks of running it, I have come to the conclusion that it is not working well at all!
To start with, she works on large word files. I have installed both office for mac 2004 and the new 2008,. but both show very poor performance, and keep on crashing to desktop when using advanced functions. (how hard can word really be on a processor???)
Then, Safari is also very unstable. When using about 5 tabs or more, it usually crashes as well, or starts hanging for ever. Also, when opening pdf files in safari, with the adobe plug-inn, it usually also hangs safari, very annoying!
but then it came to me last night: All these problems must be leopard related.
I run a G5 Quad myself, and upgraded to leopard, only to downgrade it the next day to tiger, since most of my apps were very unstable on leopard.
So my question is, do you guys think my assessment is correct, and that the most likely solution to the problems I am having is a downgrade to tiger?
I'm hoping to get some oppinions on this.
Thanks in advance for any input.
    Cheers,

Just to build on what hyphen has said:
Don't use earlier OS than came with the computer:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25784
Additionally, read about About "Downgrade" installations
+"You should not reinstall an earlier version of the same software over a later version. These "downgrade" installs may seem to work, but Apple does not test nor recommend downgrade installations in most cases. Some installers prevent downgrade installations. If you need to reinstall an earlier version of Mac OS X, erase your disk first or choose the erase option in the Mac OS X Installer. Be sure to reinstall any software updates after reinstalling the operating system."+

  • MacBook Pro sleep problems with Vista SP1

Has anyone faced sleep problems on a MacBook Pro after installing Vista SP1?
I run Boot Camp 2.0 with the latest update from Apple.
IDT finally issued a compatible Vista driver for my Sigmatel audio.
I was very happy for the first time running Vista on my Apple when I had the stupid idea to upgrade to SP1.
After days of troubleshooting with Windows support it is obvious that SP1 and my MacBook Pro are incompatible for some obscure reasons. The latest time I tried SP1 was through Windows Update, which means that Windows detected no compatibility issues, such as drivers.
I suspect Apple-in-sight driver without any evidence, just a hint.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Hibernation seems iffy. Have you tried disabling hibernation? and when you say sleep, what happens? won't wake or what?
Normally I don't recommend resetting NVRAM or SMU but for sleep you might want to.
And yes, trying to rule out why can be difficult. But I would not blame SP1. Maybe BC 2.1.
Do you have a book dealing with Vista? or looked for articles or forums that deal with Vista? There is one for Vista64 - assume you have 32-bit though. Google is often best way to find things in Apple discussions or knowledge base, too.

  • H57M-ED65 - system very unstable

Hi All, I have just built a new system and am finding it very unstable, I thought i'd see if anyone has any thoughts on what the problem might be
    H57M-ED65 mainboard
    Intel i5 650 CPU
    on-board graphics
    geil DDR3 RAM
    coolermaster 600 W PSU
So I'm finding the system is very unstable, I get frequent random resets. by reset's I mean that the system power's off (as if the reset button has been pressed), the fan's spin down, then a moment later start up again and the system post's. I dont see any pattern to this (ie it doesn't always happen when i'm doing CPU intensive work or memory/ IO intensive work.)  At least once it's corrupted the BIOS settings in the process of going down.
I dont think this is a heat problem - the CPU temp is fairly stable under a high workload (prime95 running) - approx 40deg c +- a few degrees. I have had prime95 run for several hours ok without a reset and then had it reset when idle doing nothing.
The bios version is as shipped - v1.1 - i'm a little reluctant to re-flash when the systems so unstable, I'm not too keen on the idea of it resetting part way through flashing.
I should probably add that i'm not overclocking anything.
I have had the system reset on me when tweaking the fan speeds in the MSI control panel software - though that could be a co-incidence ...
So any ideas ? Anything worth trying  / or RMA the board ?

Sounds like the same problem I had with my H55 with original BIOS and RAM compatibility. BIOS updates include memory compatibility so it's recommended you update BIOS for that reason. I had an H57M-ED but it came with BIOS 1.3 and didn't have that problem. That being said I prefer the Crucial RAM you see in my signature for the H55/H57 MB's.

Wise decision not trying to flash BIOS yet. Do like Jack said before anything else but I would recommend returning RAM and exchange for Crucial.

  • Late '06 Mac Pro w/ Leopard Shutdown & Sleep Problems

I recently did a clean install of Leopard on a brand new hard drive for my Late '06 Mac Pro. I currently have all updates installed, and the system is running very fast and very stable. But!
I've been experiencing two problems over the week I've had Leopard installed, and I would just like to know if other MP users are sharing these as well...
    1. Half the time I wake the computer from sleep, the fans blast off for about 10 seconds before the desktop is shown. Sometimes when the computer goes to sleep, via Energy Saver, my hard drives keep spinning.
    2. Shut down takes an excruciatingly long time. My typical shut down lasts around a minute to a minute and a half.
I've read around and have seen a few problems like this, but I want to know if there are a larger majority of people with a Mac Pro who are experiencing either of these in Leopard.
It's not such a nuisance, being I don't have to wait for shut down and I can wait around a few seconds when waking up the computer. Though, here's to hoping 10.5.3 or a firmware update can fix these two issues!

I had re-start from sleep problems on my '06 MP. Root cause was NG ram. Replaced wit hApple ram from OWC.com and it fixed the issue. That ram caused other issue such as frequent spinning beachball and just the feel was not right.
What can you try? i'd suspect ram but first any attached devices such as a 7 port Belkin USB hub which messed with deep sleep on mine and was replaced with a CyberPower USB hub.
Also do a smc power manager reset. Just unplu everything and wait a few mins the attach Apple keyboard and mouse power up and see what happens. One thing at a time.

  • Safari very unstable

Since I have done the 3.0 update, Safari on my iPod Touch 1st generation has become very unstable (it crashes more than 2 times in 1 minute) so I wanted to know if some other people had also this problem and how to resolve it...

It is not a Wifi or what else problem it is a application problem (Safari lag THEN crashes after) and yes I restored from a backup and it is not a network problem because before i update my iTouch, I did nort gad this problem....
And I just wanted to know if I backup as new iPod, will I loose all my songs from my iTuneslibrary and else or will I keep them and then I just have to synchronise my iPod and get my songs and apps and else back?

  • I find Safari is very unstable on iPad!

Are other people finding iPad is very unstable when using Safari?

No, but then again the problem didn't seem to exist before iOS 5.x. Look in the many other existing threads on this issue for suggestions/fixes.
