Very Useful Tips:

I am going to post a blog about this. I should also post the tips here in case people are concerned with their imac G3s which happen to have old fashioned CRT monitors. But they are still nice looking!!!!!!
iMac G3s do not have fans. They can survive well with the giant circular vent on top. This might be my opinion, but hardware these days doesn't last as long as hardware made decades ago... (and my point is...if the iMac g3 had fans, it might last longer) because eventually the CRT will be damaged by the heat... And perhaps the other hardware.
I was having concerns about the iMacs. These are all I can afford right now (going to get emacs and newer imacs in the future...and also power books. and ipods. and netbooks but I am getting them from google instead of apple since apple does not have one) and I was worried that they will malfunction very soon.
Symptom: they will make high pitched CRT-type noises. I would expect this of a 1940s television set, but not a newer CRT. I assume they are about to go bad? They probably are. All I did was go into System Preferences and Control Panels (I am using OS 9 and OS X side by side) and lower the brightness and contrast. The noises went away!! =] =]
Also I got AC powered USB hub (that lights up) and plugged in USB powered laptop cooling pads (that light up also) and used some clear tape to tape them to the top of the iMacs. The transparent light up USB hub and the transparent light up cooling pads look very nice with the iMacs.
And so far I have not heard any high pitched noises, and the iMacs don't feel as hot as a griddle anymore.
( Also I was once complaining about the cramped space on the CRT and OS 9. It turns out that I was using 800 X 600 the entire time!! }=S That is very frusterating. But I adjusted it. There is MUCH more space with OS 9 now. There is even more room on A-Dock. =S )
Let me know if anybody disagree with any of this.

I don't agree that "Mac G3s do not have fans." The tray-loader iMac G3s have fans.
Also, I'm not sure what the point is regarding 800x600. Mac OS 9, being older and before massive screens, came from a time when 800x600 was a typical resolution. The OS is better optimized for lower resolutions. The 15-inch CRT used by the CRT iMacs is fine at 1024x768, but it is optimal at 800x600 (in terms of its visual clarity). That's why it is set to 800x600 by default. Why is it "frustrating" that you can simply go to the Displays control panel to change the resolution?

  • Hopefully useful tips for endless processing

I also posted this in reply to another user, but I think it might be useful enough to others that I will post it here so it's not so buried.
I'm just starting, after many, many hours, to see the light at the end of the tunnel with Aperture 3. I think A3 offers some great options, and is a diamond in the rough -- very, very rough, even in v3.0.1.
But I think I have some VERY USEFUL TIPS for you here (again this is after a lot of learning by pain... 4 different attempts to "upgrade" my A2.1.4 library (42K images about 200GB of images).
1st, and possibly most importantly the "SHIFT" key is your friend. You can use it when you restart A3 to stop the endless processing loop that A3 would fall into every time I upgraded or imported my library to A3 (or 3.01). All you need to do is hold down the "SHIFT" key while restarting A3, this should top all previously stuck processing as you upgrade your library. So use this tip after you first upgrade/import your library, if the processing bug hits. Then you have to be patient and go though your library and figure out where the problem files are (Apple has done a LOUSY job in not identifying what specific images A3 is processing in the "Activity Window" -- Let Apple know if this really bugs you)
2nd, at this point you will need to systematically go through your library and figure out where the "problem" files are and "fix" them (in my case all of these worked just fine in 2.1.4 - go figure). I would start by generating thumbnails for all of the images in a project, one project at a time (I had 150 some in my library). When you get stuck in the "processing" loop again, you can restart A3 using the "SHIFT" trick, and maybe just try a chunk of images within that same project until you find where things fail again, and until you can get to the offending image (if it's a problem you won't be able to generate a thumbnail for the image -- and A3 will go into endless "processing" mode)
3rd, this sound like a horribly tedious process and it is. But I can offer you some useful tips. In my case, and others as well apparently, a lot of the offending files are 16-bit PSD or TIFF images, especially if they had adjustments applied in A2.1.4. In my case I had fewer than 50 of these, so I exported an original and a jpg for each of these files. I re-imported the jpg and deleted the PSD/TIFF from A3 (I kept the exported original for future use). These files would then generate thumbs without endlessly processing. The other type of file that I ran into problems with were stitched panoramic images (often over 30MP) that I had applied adjustments to in A2.1.4. I simply removed the adjustments and the generated thumbs for them (worked like a charm).
4th, download some good podcast, music or audiobook... this will take a long time.
Cheers, and look me up in FaceBook I started a group called "Apple Please Fix Aperture"

    Danny,
Funny you should mention this.... (actually it makes you look a bit like a "schill", even though you are not)... nope, as far as I can tell there is no way to tell which specific images are causing A3 to grind to a halt.
    Hence my comment:
"(Apple has done a LOUSY job in not identifying what specific images A3 is processing in the "Activity Window" -- Let Apple know if this really bugs you)" and similar previous ones in other posts.
I wonder if Steve, yes that one, knew about this, being the perfectionist he seems to be, if he would have this feature included in Activity Monitor ASAP, or more likely it would have just been fixed by now (more of a "one-button" solution). Anyone have his house #?
In any case, I please let me (us) know if this helps resolve your problems... and consider joining the Facebook group as well and maybe we can hope for a much better 3.x.x version in the very near future.

  • The drop-down list that appears when typing in the Google search bar doesn't work. Clicking on an item on that list does nothing. This very useful feature is broken.

I just installed FireFox 4. In previous versions typing in the Google search box automatically created a drop-down list of items. One could click on an item on the list and proceed to a Google results page. In FireFox 4, the list appears but clicking on an item on the drop-down menu does nothing. It's broken and it was a very useful feature in previous versions.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:

  • I can no longer drag a link to a folder -- a Windows folder -- to save it. This feature is (was) very useful as I could save links relevant to my work in the folder for the project.

In previous versions I have been able to drag the icon from the address bar to a Windows folder, producing a clickable link in that folder.
I even have FAQ and Help files on various web sites advising people to do that as it is very useful to have links to web sites in a folder relevant to the content of the folder.

This is very frustrating -- this feature worked in ver. 3, not sure about 4, but now FF 5 has removed it. This is important enough to me to either revert to v. 3 or use Opera (see below).
IE v. 8 has removed it too.
Opera v. 11 will do it -- but it only saves to the desktop and not to folders, so you have to drag the icon to the desktop and then drag it into the folder.
I use this regularly with presentations -- will be doing one next weekend -- and I take it on a USB memory stick to someone else's computer. I can click on a link in the presentation folder and have that page open in their default browser. It does me no good to have the link in my bookmarks back at my office.
If you're going to remove the feature, you might ought to remove the suggestion to use it at:

    and
https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Creating a desktop shortcut to a web page
    Please restore this feature!

Yes, there is. Look in the Inspector - Adjustment Tab:

Why did they remove this tool? it was very useful in making clips fit or going along with music, I recently upgraded from Premiere Elements 10 to 13 (due to my graphics card not working with 10) I agree 13 looks better but they took out a lot of "ease"

This is not Adobe. Rather user to user. The answer that you seek needs to come from Adobe who makes those kinds of decisions.
You might consider filing an Adobe Feature Request Bug Report Form about the matter.

That's no bad thing Chuck.  It indicates that you have better things to do than constantly refresh the forum LOL.
I'm having a wee posting spree today after lacking the inclination to respond to the same old threads for the last few days.    But I do love it when people get all in a tizzy complaining about stuff that is right under their nose (so to speak).   So I guess my criteria for responding is often based as much on how big a smile it puts on my face, as to how much I am helping the OP.   Unfortunately that irreverent approach gets me into trouble at times, and one of the moderators deleted one of my illustrated replies just a few days ago.  It took me a few minutes to work out why it had been deleted.  The subtext was 'risking one eye', and I eventually realized that the implied 'risk' could definitely be seen as offensive to some people.

  • Very used to Soundtrack Pro (on Mac) at school but New to Audition On PC Trying to get Soundtrack Pro workplace

Hello Everyone This is my first post to the forums because I really need a hand
In my school we use Soundtrack Pro on our iMacs and I have become very used to it
Since I have my own windows PC I decided to pick up Audition CS6 to use for sound design at home
The only problem is I would like to find a way to set up Audition to have the layout (or workplace) of Soundtrack Pro
I have searched through countless pages to find a way to Import a workplace that looks similar to soundtrack pro's layout and have had no luck
Is there a way that someone might be able to have a download link to the soundtrack pro workplace to use in Audition CS6? I know I won't be able to get every tab but the closest works as well
If there is a download to the workplace file where would I put the properties file on PC? I noticed that you can do this on a mac as seen here (Soundtrack Pro?)
If there is anyone out there who could help I would greatly appreciate it

if I understand what you're asking for, I don't know that there's any predefined workspace layouts that closely mirror the default layout of Soundtrack Pro, but it shouldn't be too difficult to recreate.  You can drag and drop any panel in Audition, resize it, group them, or hide them altogether.  You can save a layout as a new workspace, or if you completely mess it up, revert to the default layout for your original workspace.  As you drag panels around and hover over existing panels, you'll see different purple "hot-zones" appear. These provide guidance on where the dragged panel will be placed if you release the mouse button.  Hot-zones on the left, right, top, or bottom of a panel will position the dragged panel along side at that position and both will be visible.  Dropping in the center or in the panel tab area at the top will "stack" the panels into a group so whichever tab is clicked will be the visible panel.

  • BT Wifi with FON very useful

Having recently signed up to BT for their Infinity package, I thought I'd take a look into setting up BT WiFi on my Samsung Galaxy as 3G can be hard to get where I live, luckily there are a few BT WiFi and FON hotspots
At first I was a little concerned that using BT Wifi / Fon would affect our usage allowance but was pleasantly surprised to see that it's usage is separate and calculated in minutes. I also found out that having it enabled on your HomeHub does not affect your usage and only uses a small portion of your bandwidth.
All in all it seems a great idea to create a country wide community based Wifi network that we (the community) can all use when out and about it sure is better than a phone without 3G!, Thumbs up BT.

Well I was on holiday week ago, in a place called Mellis, in Suffolk, miles away from anywhere. I took a 3G MIFI unit with me as I expected that there would be no BT hotspots, even though the map showed one about a quarter of a mile away.
Arrived at the cottage and there were TWO very strong BT wifi signals from adjacent houses, so I did not have to use the 3G unit at all, even though there was average coverage.
No problem in connecting to either of the hotspots (coming from HH2s), and getting a good speed.
So yes. a very useful facility.
There are some useful help pages here, for BT Broadband customers only, on my personal website.
