Very very desperate newbie

Question

Hello everyone here....I am now stuck in some apparently simple code, but still cannot solve them....
My purpose is trying to resize the width of a column in jTable
(1) I try to resize the table column width in Design view in jBuilder, but it doesn't work
(2) Then i try this piece of code:

public class ABC extends jFrame {
TableColumn column = null;
for (int i=0; i < 7; i++) // a 6x7 grid
{    column = jTable1.getColumnModel().getColumn(i);
if i == 2 {
column.setPreferredWidth(40);
} else {
column.setPreferredWidth(80);
(This piece of code is just copied down from somewhere in this site)
However it doesn't work again.
So finally everything is not working!! Anyone to tell me the secret of this little but despairing question??

I forgot to say that the purpose to resize column width is that I want a 'zero' width column in the rightmost side. The reason behind is that I've created a table inside a scrollPane and when i try to retrieve data from it....it's not totally working
e.g. there are 6x7 column in my table
value at (0,0) is "Monday" (preset)
now i've entered "abcd" in (0,1)
"bcd" in (0,2)
then when i want to retrieve the data in table, using
System.out.println(jTable.getValueAt(0,0));
System.out.println(jTable.getValueAt(0,1));
System.out.println(jTable.getValueAt(0,2));
then the output is
Monday
abcd
Apparently the (0,2) is not shown. Finally i realise that when i entered data in location (0,0) ....(0, n) , it always show (0,0) to (0, n-1) only. That's why i need a so-called hidden column....anyone can solve it for me?
