Very very slow import using LOG and Transfer

I am using a CANON VIXAIA HF10.and the clips are importing very very slow. The max time on each clip is only 5 min or so. Is there a way to speed this up? Thanks.

Log and transfer only supports AVCHD. It does not support AVCHD Lite, nor will it work with Motion JPEG media. You could use third party software to convert it, or iMovie and then export a QuickTime movie from there in the correct codec and format.

  • Cant import using Log and Transfer to FCE 4.0.1 from Panasonic DMC-TZ10

Does anyone know if/how I can import into FCE 4.0.1 using Log and Transfer? I use Log and Transfer with my Sony HDR XR200VE Video Camera but when I try this with the Panasonic DMC-TZ10 I can play the clips in the Log and Transfer Clip viewer however they don't import after I add them to the queue. It just gives me an ! icon and gives up.
I guess I need to know if there is a combination of camera settings and Codecs I can choose that will allow me to successfully import into FCE 4.0.1 using Log and Transfer.
The settings I can choose on the DMC-TZ10 camera are the Rec Mode (Either AVCHD Lite (GPS Rec), AVCHD Lite, or Motion JPEG) and the Rec Quality SH, H or L).
iPhoto 09 and iMovie 09 will automatically import video from this camera if I choose Motion JPEG and H on the DMC-TZ10

  • Is there a way to import clips from AVCHD folders I have copied from my camcorder to my hard disk? With FCE I could import these clips using log and transfer.

In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk?  With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files.  If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).

    Hi jphil and Tom
I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."
    Folder structure is
    AVCHD
         BDMV
              CLIPINF
                   .CPI files
              Index.bdm
              Movieobj.bdm
              PLAYLIST
                   .MPL file
              STREAM
                   .MTS files
    AVF_INFO
         3 files (.bnp, .inp, .int)
    DCIM
         101MSDCF
              empty
         MODELCFG.IND (file)
My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.
    Thank you in advance

  • Can't Import Sony AVCHD Using Log and Transfer

    HI
I have been importing AVCHD footage from all kinds of cameras, mainly Panasonics for over 4 years now using Final Cut Pro 7.  I just got a new Sony NEX-EA50 but when I try to import the footage using Log and Transfer, it does not show up.  When I try to drop the card folder into the window I get the ""PRIVATE" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media." message.
The only way I can import the footage is using Toast, but that is a pain in the *** because it is a hassle to rename and scan the clips before I import.
Does anybody know whats going on?  Did Sony purposely change their file directory system so it couldn't be read by FCP?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
What framerate did you shoot ?
Log and Transfer will not recognise non standard frame rates such as 50 fps or 60fps. Toast, Clipwrap etc is an option but there is another. If you have the Panasonic AVCCAM importer Quicktime plug in, it will allow you to convert to Pro Res through Mpeg Streamclip or Compressor.

Hang on, are you pointing log and transfer at the ROOT folder and not the folders inside.

I cannot import my AVCHD files by using log and transfer. I can see all the files, but when I add the file to import que it doesnt work, the status is a red and says that its no data. I have tried with different cards and different cardreaders, but it is still the same. Why?!

Please give us more specific information -
What make/model camcorder are you using?
Are you absolutely certain this is AVCHD video?  Tell us more about the video settings you used in the camcorder (eg, frame size, frame rate, quality level)
Why are you attempting Log & Transfer from a card reader instead of from your camcorder?  Have you tried doing Log & Transfer from your camcorder?
Are the SD cards straight from the camcorder, unaltered, or are you just using the cards as storage?
Are you using FCE 4.0 or FCE 4.0.1?

  • Glitches Convertng AVCHD using Log and Transfer

Hi, I'm converting a large batch of AVCHD to ProRes 422 using log and transfer for a project. I've converted almost all the footage, but have had to break down some longer clips because FCP7 won't convert the whole clip, it starts to act wonky. There is one large clip that I'm trying to convert a section of, that just won't convert and keeps giving me the annoying red exclamation point no matter what I do. I've tried changing the scratch disk, using the original name of the clip, unchecking "abort capture on dropped frames," changing the in and out on points--all the suggestions that I've found on discussion boards--nothing has worked. I've considered buying some external software, but am afraid the clip itself might be corrupted, though I've converted other sections of it with no problem. Any suggestions?

Hi Michael, Thanks for the quick response. I copied the clip, the whole card  to a different internal drive and FCP crashed  when I tried to transfer a section the troublesome clip. Here's part of the report I got after the crash:
    Application Specific Information:
*** Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSMallocException', reason: '*** -[NSConcreteMutableData appendBytes:length:]: unable to allocate memory for length (75356)'
*** Call stack at first throw:
The camera is the Sony NEX-FS700. As I said before, I'm baffled. I've transferred two other sections from this same clip and also from all the other clips from this card with no problem. It was a couple of months ago, but I've not changed any settings or preferences.

  • Sync Audio using Log and Transfer

Shot footage using Sony Ex-1, recorded audio separately on DAT. There is a Timecode jammed, as well as a clapper. Using Final Cut 6.06.
Can I sync the audio and video before putting them in the bin? Is there a way to sync the audio and video using "Log and Transfer"?
I'm trying to find a way to sync them so that it saves the video and audio as a separate movie file.

You can't sync the files during log and transfer. You have to capture the audio and video seperately, then sync them using a process such as this: http://www.ericbrodeur.com/blog/2008/12/03/syncing-dailies-in-final-cut-pro/

  • Best way to import MTS (AVCHD)/missing clips using Log and Transfer

My footage (Sony HDR 500) of an average project consists of approximately 10 hours film and 1600 clips. When I use the option Log and Transfer to import in FCE not all clips are imported in FCE. All other clips are consecutively numbered and cannot be compared with the numbering of the clips on the camera anymore. As a result it is, with those large amounts of clips, almost impossible to find out which clips are missing.
Importing takes a very long time (is that normal?) so I would like to run this proces at night, but due to this missing clips problem I am afraid to do this so it is not a good option for me. Does anyone recognize this problem?
To avoid all this I now convert all clips with Voltaic to .mov before importing. At least I know for sure that I have all clips imported, but it is so cumbersome and it takes a lot of time too. This proces I do in steps because I am afraid to start everything at once. After converting the project almost takes 120 GB.
It takes days before everything is imported and that frustrates me. If the same material is imported in Edius for example it only takes an hour (tested) so it appears to be an FCE/Apple problem. Is there any way to accelerate?
I am working with an iMac from 2010, 2,8GHz quadcore i7, 16GB intern geheugen met snow leopard.
I hope someone can help me out.
    Thanks, Jacqueline

While I have not seen the exact problem you describe, 1600 clips is a lot of clips to import at once - so is 10 hours of video.
If you are using FCE to Log & Transfer directly from the camera, your clips are automatically being transcoded to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec(AIC) during importing, which explains the long time it takes to ingest the clips.
Also, QT/AIC files are much, much larger than the AVCHD clips in your camera.  If you are shooting 1920x1080 video, 10 hours of AVCHD translates into roughly 450GB of QT/AIC clips.  It is possible that you may be a) running out of disk space, or b) exceeding the scratch disk minimum allowable free space set in FCE > System Settings.  If so, that could explain why not all your clips are being imported - FCE is probably stopping the Log & Transfer process when it hits the disk space limit.
Regarding alternatives, I'm not so sure about Voltaic.  The Voltaic documentation says it only supports H.264 in QT/.mov files, and that would not be usable in FCE.  Check some of those clips to see what codec they are.  I suspect they are H.264.  (Also, you referred to the converted clips taking 120GB space, which just happens to match the AVCHD storage capacity of your camera ... and AVCHD is a form of H.264 video, so they take up about the same disk space.)
In order to edit your clips in FCE, they need to be QT/AIC.  Two alternatives come to mind - Clipwrap and MPEG Streamclip.  Both can convert AVCHD video to QT/AIC, and both support batch conversion.  If it were me, I'd consider Clipwrap first, for this volume of material, since Clipwrap was specifically designed for AVCHD.
The reason importing is so much faster in Edius is that it can import & directly edit AVCHD clips; Edius basically just copies the clips from the camera to your hard drive.  FCE has to convert the clips to QT/AIC first, before you can edit the video, and that takes considerable time.

  • Importing 60i footage using log and transfer, not working :(

Hi, when I import my 60 fps footage in to Final Cut Express using the log and transfer method (because the footage is AVCHD) it always changes the frame rate to 29.97 even if the frame rate is lower like 24 fps. I need this to be 60 frames per second because I'm working with a slow motion shot and need to get the most frames from the footage.

    Thanks, David,
We had done all of those little tricks to no avail... but we did figure it out.
It turns out it was a corrupted sequence that was causing the problems.
Trashed the sequence, now everything's happy again.

  • While using Log and Transfer, firewire cable got yanked. Help!?!

While in the middle of transferring clips from my camera into my fcp project, the firewire cable got yanked. After retoring the project and recconecting the media, Log and Transfer wont import the clips from the camera anymore. The clips play in the preview window fine, and I even saved the media to a new location and tried to Log and Transfer again but every time I just get a red stop sign with an exclamation point error, with no explanation. What good is an error sign first of all without any explanation Apple?  I've also even tried starting a new project to start fresh, but FCP won't transfer the clips. I had this problem once before and it was a lack of hard disk space, but I have at least 65GB left on the Macbook, and about the same on the scratch disk.
Anyone know how to make it work? Thanks!
(transferring footage from a P2 card off of an HVX200)

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, always best to clone a backup before taking radical steps. You could also try booting to single user mode first (hold shift on start up) that can clear some cache issues up.
Just a wild thought - perhaps a large temp file was created during capture that was not deleted. You would probably want to show your hidden files (google can show you how, involves terminal), and look for a very large temp file on your drive, it would probably be in the same folder you were capturing to, but could also be at the root of your system drive. Their could be some other large temp files too, like a sleep file for instance.
DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK, always best to clone a backup before taking radical steps.
    good luck!

  • Import or log and transfer?  does it matter?

I am a handful of .mov's I'm using for a project and usually I just left click and import the folder full of .mov's. Does that have drawbacks? Or should I log and transfer?
    or does it matter?

Without knowing more about your setup it's hard to say. It might matter. But maybe not. But we can't tell you more - until you tell us more.
See, when you refer to files simply as ".mov's" that doesn't tell us much. That just means that QT is going to want to play them back. But it says nothing of the real codec behind the movies. Meaning, the movies could be DVCPro, DVPro HD, DV, AVCHD, ProRes, AVI's, H.264, mp4...the list goes on and on.
So FCP is tuned to work with some of these codecs better than others. Telling us more about what going on "under the hood" with those .mov's will help us to guide you better.

  • Why is there an 'Error: No Data' sign when importing in Log and Transfer?

    Hello,
I am trying to import clips from my Panasonic HDC-SD100 camcorder into Final Cut Express 4. I am using the Log and Transfer window and am able to import most of my clips. However, every time I import there are a handful of clips that are left idle and an 'Error: No Data' sign appears next to them. They have not been imported to the Scratch Disk, and yet there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them because they playback on the viewing screen in the Log and Transfer window. Can anyone help me to determine what is wrong?
    Many thanks.

Some of the descriptions you are using are kind of confusing.
"first 2 controls of each DO line(s)"
"button 1 of DO lines 1 and DO lines 2"
"control 2 of DO lines 1 and DO lines 2"
What is the difference between "button 1" and "control 2".  I am going to assume you mean the same thing when you say "button" vs. "control" but just decided to change terminology in mid-sentence
You need to write out a Truth table to describe what you need done.  The way you have the description written, you are already using the word "OR" to describe the different situations.  That is going to be a key part of your program.
    This shows:
    (DOlines button1 AND button2)  OR
    (DOlines2 button1  AND button2) OR
    (DOlines button1 AND DO lines2 button1)  OR
    (DOlines button2 AND DO lines2 button2)

  • Problems importing through log and transfer

anybody know why i cant import canon elph 100HS video files through log and transfer in final cut pro 7?
    thanks

Does Canon have a plugin for working with that camera and FCP like they do for their larger DSLRs?  If so, download and install it and then try Log & Transfer again.  If not, you'll need to convet the files from the camera using other apps like MPEG Streamclip or possibly ClipWrap.

  • I have footage shot on a p2 camera, why won't all of the clips transfer when using Log and Transfer?

Only about 60% of the clips transferred over or was shown in the Log and Transfer window.

Offload the cards...back them up.  That is priority #1.  Do that first...then return the camera.  Then try mucking about with this.
Back up the ENTIRE card structure.
