Very weird signal strength problem

Hello everybody, I have a rather unique problem with a linksys range expander. I have successfully set one up at my home and am presently trying to set one up for a friend. I set everything up in every possible way I knew how (I had a lot of experience after trying to set up my own)and I believe the range expander is set up correctly however in Wireless connection status it is still showing the signal as very low. BUT if I click view wireless networks, it shows the network as having excellent signal strength! I know that distance is not an issue as the adapter and range expander in my house is set up at more than twice the distance of my friends and it still receives excellent signal. Thus I'm inclined to think that something else is causing this problem, since I also have tried moving the range expander in case something was blocking it, to no effect. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if anyone has any ideas for a fix? Thanks!

If the Range Extender is showing two blue lights & from the wired computer you are able to ping 192.168.1.240........ we can assume that range extender is working fine ......
Let me know on wireless computer which utility you are using?

  • Very low signal strength when using DLINK 2640t with mac mini

i have a mac mini and i have been using it fine with a 2wire wireless modem. However i have just switched to a Dlink 2640t (54Mbps (802.11g) Wireless ADSL 2/2+ Router with Built-in Modem, 4-port 10/100Mbps Switch) and have been getting very low signal strengths on my mac mini, resulting in me not being able to surf the internet. The modem+ router is located in the next room. Does anyone know whether its the problem with the modem router or mac mini's airport wireless problems with the router itself. It worked perfectly fine with my previous 2wire wireless modem
    please help!

Did you reset the router after you updated router's firmware? Its always recommended to perform a reset after firmware upgrade on the router.

For wireless range and signal issues, try changing the channel on the router to either 1,6,9 or 11.

  • IMac G5 AirPort Issues - Very poor signal strength.

Disclaimer: I am normally a PC user, but just bought a iMac G5 for my son's bedroom. Problem is that I am having a **** of a time getting the iMac to stay connected to my network long enough to download a newest OS update and in general, it is very slow downloading webpages...clearly not normal...at least I hope not.
My connection is Broadband DSL to my main PC equipped with a Linksys WRT54G Broadband Router. My 2nd PC is connected wirelessly and is much further away than my iMac, but gets better reception.
Therefore, what is the deal with my iMac??? It seems to be super slow downloading the large software updates and has often timed out as they have bogged down.
As a PC guy, I am wondering is it an internal antenna issue in the iMac G5 or is it something as simple as Wi-Fi (AirPort) setting?
If is is a lousy internal antenna, what can I do to boost my signal strength? I was thinking of disabling the Wireless and buying Gaming Console access point to hard wire to the ethernet port. Is that possible? Would AirPort Express device be good for anything?
Help...I am ready to return my first Apple and go with a Dell!!!
    Solutions???

Thanks Rod. Your comments were very helpful...
Apologies for the dash of sarcasm, M., but these things usually are just that simple to get running, and your Dell jokes started me down that path you know . Yes, I should have resisted the temptation.
Screen orientation really can make a difference in a low signal situation. So can simply changing the channel on which your wireless router operates (have you tried that yet?). You also can't assume that because a computer in a neighbouring room gets gets adequate signal , the one that you are working on will too. Walls, power circuits, nearby electrical gear, etc etc can all have highly localised effects with this stuff.
If, as it appears, you have adequate signal strength (I thought you indicated initially that you didn't have) and the problem is not related to local interference on the channel which the router is using (that's why you need to try a different channel) , then its time to check other aspects of the setup, both of the router and the iMac. The problem could be caused at either end.
Lets take the router first. The WRT54G usually actually works pretty well with Macs. In some cases, however, it may need a firmware update from the Linksys site. There have been quite a few different models of this particular router produced, so you'll need to check the downloads section at Linksys support for the correct one.
The best people here to answer this sort of stuff are probably Henry B. and Frank Canzolino . They both spend much of their time over in the Airport forums. If a firmware update for the router , or a simple channel change, doesn't fix the problem then I'd try posting there with "WRT54G and iMac G5 AE " displaying in the subject line.
As far as toast goes, I personally recommend asking the power company to drop the voltage for a few minutes. Saves all that time wasted knob twiddling.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Signal Strength Problems - 1310

I've got a site with six 1310's installed. Prior to Hurricane Katrina we've had no problems with the setup.
Since the hurricane, we've replaced all but two of the units (those two didn't get flooded). On the units that were replaced, we also replaced the antenna's (12dBi omni's) and the cable's (100' ULL).
We are getting really poor signal strength, -85 to -90 dBm. The maximum distance between root and non-root's is about 425 feet with clear line of sight. I don't have a good calculation of Fresnel zone, but since it is 28ft at 2.8 miles, I think I'm clear on this also.
I've two non-roots that are about 200 feet away from root, on start-up they have a signal strength of about -50 dBm, but over 10-15 minutes, they degrade to -85 dBm.
The Cisco engineer I was working with was thrown in the towel, saying he doesn't know anything about antenna's.
I did a site survey and didn't come up with any interference.
    Anyone have any clues?
    Thanks,
    Westley

Thanks for the pictures, it helps a lot to see how things are layed out.
The move to replace 200' of low loss to 100 feet of Ultra low loss was probably a Very Good Thing and should have increased the signal strength considerably.
Grounding is very important, if only for the safety aspects. "Lightning Arrestors" don't stop lightning; they bleed off static electricity and (tend to) reduce the space charge that can accumulate on exposed elements.
It's always a good idea to put in a segment of fiber between the APs and the wired network to prevent the zap from killing the rest of the network (and maybe the phones too ....).
Check the coax for kinks (or places that were kinked), sharp bends, broken jacket, etc. At Gig+ frequencies, any malformed section of cabling an have a significant impact on the propagation of the signal.
Check each connector to make sure there isn't any "stuff" that is causing a casual short between the center conductor and the shield. Look closely, wire fragments from the braid can be pretty hard to see.
Also make sure that the center pin is ~level with the surrounding sleeve. Sometime the center pin is driven back into the connector (i.e., bad termination) and is not making sufficient contact.
The "starts strong and tapers off" symptom can only be something related to power, a failing component, heat (causing a component to break down), or some safety mechanism (i.e., high SWR causing the transmitter to throttle back)....
Try another known good power brick,
    Try another antenna (any antenna)
and see if the symptoms change.
Probably the most suspicious places would be the connections around the arrestor, and the connection from the coax to the antenna pigtail.
I looked at the pattern of your new antennas:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/wireless/ps469/prod_installation_guide09186a0080148acf.html
The "E-Plane" drawings are the "side view," the "H-Plane" is the "top view". Imagine the line from the center of the chart to the "90" (bottom) is your mast.
Anyway, the short version is: Check the cable and connections carefully (especially connections and the arrestors).
Second to that, make sure the power supply is stable.
It's not likely to be an IOS issue (but I'm a big fan of staying as current as possible).
Check it out and let us know if you find anything ...
    Good Luck
    Scott

  • TS1559 wifi signal strength problem

my ipad 3 wifi signal strength  is very (increase or decrease) and some time its appear one bar
please tell me what i do for its solution
    thanks

Could be a router problem or settings problem.
    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Signal strength problem on MacBook Pro

We bought a new AirPort Extreme 802.11n for Christmas. Setup was fairly easy. We have two Macs--an 2005 iMac which is plugged into the AE via Ethernet, and a MacBook Pro from mid-2006 that we use in other rooms.
Our problem is that the signal strength on the MacBook Pro is terrible. Even at just 20 feet away, the signal strength varies between 1 and 3 bars (most often just the one tiny bar). The wireless is basically unusable at that point because pages stop loading.
To eliminate interference as a problem, our daughter brought her 2008 MacBook Pro over and we carried it around the house. It had 4 bar strength with no problems wherever we went and held 4 bars for hours while she used it in the kitchen. So we're pretty sure the problem is not interference in our house, unless her newer AirPort card is far better at blocking it.
What could be causing the signal strength on the older MacBook Pro to be so lousy? The computer is a Intel Core Duo, 2.16 GHz, running 10.4.11. The wireless card is 0x168C, 0x86. The wireless network adapter is 802.11 a/b/g, so it's not running "n", but I can't believe that's the only reason it won't hold a good signal. The AE is set up to run "n" as well as the older ones. (Bear with me...this is my first experience with wireless!)
We've been trying everything we can think of to improve the signal but nothing works. When the bars are in the 2-3 range it runs the internet fine, but the problem is that the signal constantly shifts between 1 and 3. So is the AirPort card in the computer that weak?
Any ideas are most welcome. Thanks.

Sorry, posted in wrong forum by accident. Please ignore.

  • Weird signal strength

I am probably the only person that bought an iPhone knowing that i have zero AT&T service at my home. Anyway the weird thing is when the iPhone is on the dock i get almost full too full signal, taking it off i get "No service" which is what i expected to get all the time.
Just out of curiosity does anyone know why this would happen

Do you live on a hill by chance? I also don't have a signal at home. I've noticed the same thing re signal strength in the cradle.
I bought a ZBoost YX510 Dual Band Repeater Kit ($349) and it didn't really help much. I even extended the supplied antenna to the end of an 8' PVC pipe vertically on top of my roof. No luck.

  • Airport Extreme signal strength problem

My airport extreme's signal is very weak by the time it gets to the other end of my house, and a couple of computers at that end have been using my neighbor's unsecured wifi for their internet connection. How can I extend or strengthen the broadcast? Is there a setting in the airport utility app? The computers affected are windows xp computers. My iMac and Vista pc are connected via the ethernet cable, so they're not using wifi.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
Wireless signal strength dissipates quite quickly with distance and any obstructions such as walls or ceilings will make this effect even more noticeable.
If you have a newer dual band AirPort Extreme and you want to extend both bands for greater wireless coverage using wireless only, then you'll need to look at another dual band AirPort Extreme.
The AirPort Express can also be configured to extend your wireless network, but it will only extend one band.
The extending device would normally be located at approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of the distance between your main router and the area that needs more wireless coverage.
Post back if you decide to add an extending device to your network and you need help with configuration details.

  • Signal strength problem

Hi there- hope you can help.
Until recently I had an iBook G4 sharing the ethernet connection of an iMac G4 via airport. This worked perfectly throughout the house, both with and without an airport express base station
Recently I changed the iBook for a 12" PB G4 1.5 Ghz and set everything up with the exact same configuration. The problem is that the signal strength with the new PB is terrible. The two machines can sit right next to each other and I'll only get a 3 out of 4 signal strength on the PB. And when it gets more than 10 feet away, it loses all connection. This is the same either with the airport base station, or sharing the iMac's ethernet connection via airport cards.
    Any ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Boris

I have a related problem. I'm running 10.4.4 on a G4 PB. I just downloaded the latest Airport update (as of 1/21). When I restarted, I either got a too-weak signal or none at all and I was sitting at the exact place from which I'd done the download. When I bring the PB within 10 unobstructed feet of the base station, the signal returns. This is extremely frustrating as the description of the update mentioned improved reception. Yeah, right. I repaired permissions and restarted which of course made no difference.
I have a feeling that we both need a software fix; I hope Apple is forthcoming with it.

  • VERY poor signal strength

I'm lucky if I get one bar at home, often getting the connection lost message every few minutes. We have another iphone in the household though that is absolutely fine.
Is this something that is supposed to improve after a couple of days (I did transfer my number from an old provider, and I still keep getting texts saying "We haven't set picture messaging up yet"), or could something be wrong with the phone?

Re picture messaging: I believe that's coupled to MMS which AT&T does not yet support. Should not be related to signal strength.
Re signal strength: I'd try a full reset (hold down the Home button below the screen and the power button at the top simultaneously). You might also try cycling Wi-Fi and 3G on and off in the Settings: I've seen my signal low and jump back to normal after changing such settings.
If anything my phone signals at home are better (consistently full bars) than they were with the 2G model. And 3G tests out as about 8x faster than EDGE, but substantially slower than Wi-Fi, here.

C3-01  Does not capture signals as other phones do,this model shows poor signal strength all time..i am using lattest  6.05 Version..

We are business users and have 3 of these phones. I find it hard to beleive the signal strength is so poor on a service such as Vodafone in 3 different city centre locations throughout the UK. The hand sets are only 4 months old, so is there a known design flaw?

  • E71-1 Signal strength problem in the UK

    Hi
I am thinking of buying the E71; I've read glowing reviews and it looks really a great phone.
However reading this forum is giving me second thoughts.
Can anybody tell me if the is a signal strenght problem in the UK. If there is, is it on both the GSM900MHz band and the GSM1800MHz band or just the lower band? I'm with Orange which uses GSM1800MHz band
Any information pertaining to the UK would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • VERY weird OVM networking problem

First, this may have nothing to do with OVM, but the problem I'm seeing is happening on all FIVE of my VM servers. I can't even guess what's going on. Maybe you have seen this and solved it, or maybe you can suggest what I can do to debug this.
    Here are the details:
I have a 3-node cluster, built from brand new IBM x3650 M4 servers. I have a 2-node cluster, built from old retired IBM xSeries servers that used to be VMWare ESX servers. My office is on another subnet from the data center network that contains all 5 servers. I see the following symptoms occasionally and randomly (I see it at least once a day, and can make it happen multiple times a day if I keep trying):
    1. When I SSH to one of these boxes, sometimes the session will freeze. At other times, the session will work perfectly, but after exiting the SSH session, any subsequent attempt to ping or connect via TCP from my desktop to that server will absolutely fail. That is, ping, traceroute, and ssh (and presumably, everything) failes.
    2. If I don't try to communicate with that server for several minutes (maybe 5 to 10 minutes, I'm not sure), and then try to ping or SSH to the box, it works again!
    3. However, if after, say, exiting SSH, and finding that I can't ping the server, if I keep pinging (from Windows, I say "ping -t -w 5000 vmserver") the pings will fail FOREVER. I have left it pinging for 24 hours, and it would never answer a ping. But then if I stop the pinging, wait ten minutes, and ping again, it works. I swear.
    4. During the time that I am unable to ping one of VM servers from my desktop, if I try to ping that same server from another desktop machine in my office, connected to the SAME little 4-port switch, it works perfectly.
    5. This is ever more weird: During the time that my desktop 1 cannot ping server1, say, I can go go desktop 2 (right beside desktop 1), open an SSH session to server1, and from there, I can ping desktop1. I swear.
Why would I think this is an Oracle VM problem, you ask? Well, I wouldn't, except that I have other servers in that data center, that run ESX, and AIX, and Windows, and I've tried like hell to make one of them exhibit one of these symptoms, and I cannot do it.
If you have any ideas about what the heck is going on, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Doesn't sound like a VM problem to me. Sounds like you either have a spanning tree loop or you've got a lot of packet collisions causing issues.
I don't know how much you know about networking but a spanning tree loop is when you have multiple paths connected to the same physical network without using load balancing or multipathing. You can have multiple connections between physical networks but it must be configured properly or you'll have one link come up and the other go into blocking mode. you'll never know which one it might be. That is.... if the links have the same cost. Thus you get a "loop". If the ports are "floping". You'll have times when its up and times when its down. Your network admin should be able to see if the spanning tree is constantly be rewritten. That is a sure sign you have a network loop.
You said you have a 4 port switch? If that switch is set on a port that's set to do "portfast" then the switching fabric will never learn what's behind that switch. You just can't plug a switch into a network and expect it to work. Again, I don't know what you know about networking so don't take it the wrong way.
Packet collisons happen when you have a link between equipment where one side negotiates to a different speed than another. Say one side is 100 half duplex while the other end is 1000G Full duplex. You get massive amounts of collision and it will only get worse the more traffic you try to pass. Again. You mentioned a 4 port switch. You should never assume that switches will ever negotiate at the same speed on each end of the connection. Cisco has historically recommended that inter switch links be hard code to avoid 'negotiation" issues. Its not a big a difference in 1 gb siwtchiing and 10 gb switch but if you have a 100 mb 4 port switch hooked into a 1gb link..... that might be your problem. Just some thoughts.
IF you really were having a VM issues. The cluster heartbeat would be causing the VM servers to constantly reboot. So I don't think its on you servers. Probabily between you and the servers.

USB 2.0 is only required for charging the iPod shuffle it should work when connected to a USB 1.1
    Also check the Battery Status
