Vexing Lightroom 1.1 feature

In Lightroom 1.0, I would typically import a folder, go to the "Develop" mode and then work my way through the editing process with the arrow buttons. If I came across a photo that I wanted to work in an external editor (Photoshop CS3), I would just make certain the "stack with original" box was checked and then, when I had finished editing that image, both the copy and the orginal would be in the same position relative to the other images from the folder and I could just continue working my way through with the right arrow button.
Very convenient.
Now, in LR 1.1, once the editing process is done, both the original and the edited copy image are automatcially moved to the end of the line and to pick up where I left off I must either return to the library or to the slides that pop up at the bottom. As I can have several hundred images in a folder, this is a very inconvenient and aggravating waste of time.
Does anybody have a solution?
I am working with a Mac Pro Intel, btw.
Thanks

Thanks, Jeff: This certainly sounds promising - the only thing is, I can't find a "sort order" setting, not even when I go to Lightroom Help. I do find a "Develop View Options" under window and it does give you a choice between file name and "capture date time" but no edit time.
It doesn't matter which of these options that I select, it still moves the images to the end of the line so that, to continue the editing process, I must get back into the library and scroll around until I get to the point where I left off. If I do not select "stack with original", the original will stay in it's place and only the edited copy will move to the back, but the effect is the same as the develop window winds up on the edited image and not the original.
The problem is not whether or not the two images are together, but rather the fact that once you have done the edit, the final image is now moved to the last spot, whether stacked with the original or not, and I cannot use the arrow button to move to the next image, as I could in Lightroom 1.0, but must go back into the library and find my way back to the takeoff point.
So, where do I find "sort order?"

  • Lightroom Needs Convert Feature!

Lightroom needs a feature that lets you replace a filetype with another. For example convert a set of tiff files to jpeg, and after the conversion the tiffs would be gone (optional of course) and the jpegs would be there in thier place with filename, ratings, keywords all intact. I know you can export and bring back in and all that good stuff but then you have to go back tourhg and rate adn such. You need to be able to replace a sit of filetpye with another with a click of a button.
OK so you ask whats the point. Well lets say you have your 16 bit tiff files sitting around but you don't like the images much but not so much dislike that you want to delete them. But the tiffs are HUGE so instead you convert them to jepgs and the big tiffs are gone but you still have a nice small version of the file you couldn't completely let go of.
PS. if this is already possible please tell me how :)

OK so after i posted this i see the "lightroom feature request thread" Sorry my stupidness again :(

  • Does lightroom 5 have features to make someone skinny?

does lightroom have features to make someone skinny?

Actually, yes - sortof: a new feature of Lightroom 5 supports "correcting" aspect ratio (see manual lens corrections in develop module) which can make people look skinnier all over - i.e. it's not "selective" (you can't target body regions, or individual persons) like the advanced tools in Photoshop (e.g. liquify), but if it's all you need..

  • New Lightroom 4 mail feature does not work with Hotmail

    Hi,
I have tested the new mail feature today.  Unfortunatelly, it does not work well with my hotmail account.
The mail is send by lightroom and received in my hotmail mailbox, but the photo is not visible.  The tekst in the messages is readable, but instead of the downloaded photoI only see a red cross.
Anyone an idea what the reason is ?
    thanks
    Rudy

    Hi Stone Pan,
    Thanks for answering.
I do not see any error message and the received mail contains a correct text message, only the picture is not visible in the mail.  I tried to send a Photo with the email preset on small and normal but without success.
    Kind regards,
    Rudy
    Edit :
I have tried to send a photo to the hotmail email adress of a friend and it works, text and photo are visible.  Conclusion is that the reason for not showing the photo is not a Lightroom 4 problem.  The reason should be something on my own computer, any suggestions are welcome.

  • Lightroom "Edit In" Feature not sending to Outside Editors

    Hi,
I ran into a problem today with my Lightroom to Photoshop connection (which extends to other editing programs as well). I have the most up-to-date Lightroom (5.7) and the most up-to-date Photoshop CC 2014 (2014.2.1); I tried to send a photo to Photoshop for editing and nothing happened (same with all my external editors). I read up on similar experiences on the adobe forum and the recent advisory regarding this issue (which doesn't apply as it already is the latest version of PS). So I uninstalled Photoshop, then reinstalled per the recommendations I had read. Nothing changed. So I uninstalled PS (including my old CS4 version), Bridge, and Lightroom. Then reinstalled Lightroom. Tried to export to my other editing software and it wouldn't work. I then uninstalled the additional editing software and reinstalled PS. Lightroom still won't export. I am not sure what to now... I could uninstall everything but that is a heck of a pain... Any other suggestions or others running into this issue?

Thank you everyone for your idea. I did try wait longer to see if the image would load to PS. Still nothing after 5 mins. I also tried with PS already open and still didn't work. Reset the warning dialog, and still nothing... However! You ideas got me thinking and I decided to try to use the edit in function on an image that was not edited in Lightroom... low and behold it came right up in PS. So I went to a new image, did a fast edit, then tried to send to PS and wouldn't work. So for some reason PS is not accepting a Lightroom edit... I do remember a dialog box a while ago regarding if I want to render from lightroom or use original image etc... But I cannot find that reset in the preferences as that is the only thing I can think of... Any ideas where to look for that? Reset warnings didn't bring that box up with I tried the newest send to PS.

  • Keeping a jpg folder in sync (automatic export or lightroom command line feature)

Working with raw is good, but, sometimes, you need to have your "starred" photos in jpg somewhere for various reasons (for example you want to sync that jpg folder with a web portfolio or you want a folder to browse your photos without opening LR).
What would be good is to be able to sync certain raws with jpg, i mean, a scheduled (windows) job which, at, say, 11am, checks modified raws (both raw and XMP), launches LR in background and export them all to that folder using a predefined profile.
This would very useful to keep an online gallery without doing manual work everytime a pic is choosed (by starring or flaggin it).
Currently SDK allows scripting inside LR, it would be great to be able script LR itself in some way (i mean a command line version, like "lightroom.exe /export profilename file.raw" which exports that file to jpg with lighroom edits, or lightroom.exe /select "flag=red" /export profilename). This would be really really useful. If we combine this with export SDK it could also be able to upload photos by itself once exported.

I agree. I have just recently looked into how I can semi-automate this, but the problem is that as far as I can see, there is no way to export files using the same folder structure as they have inside LR, so it is difficult to compare the exported files with what is inside LR. For example, if the raw file is in c:\images\\folder1\image1.raw I would like to export it to f:\imagecopies\folder1.image1.jpb without having to give the "folder1" name (i.e. the root "f:\imagecopies" should have been enough).
Maybe this can be solved with a export plugin, but I haven't looked at the SDK yet.

  • Lightroom 2 specific feature questions

I'm thinking about purchasing LR 2 but need to know if it does the following (I have been searching but cannot find out if LR 2 has these capabilities):
    1. Click on image to change white balance
    2. Change picture style
    3. Display RAW shooting information (f-stop, shutter speed, ISO, etc)
    4. Save image settings for use on other images (curves, brightness, sharpness, contrast, etc)
    5. Batch RAW conversion (to JPEG, TIF, etc)
    6. Change Red, Green, and Blue color channels
    7. Rotate image
    8. Resize image when converting from RAW
    9. Compress JEPG when converting from RAW
    10. Fill light

Yes to all but number 6 (and even that one can be done in various ways like HSL or using the DNG profile editor). Why not download the trial and use it for a while?

  • Output Photobooks to PDF using Lightroom vs Aperture

    Hello,
I have been using Lightroom since it was first launched and I love it. However, now I need to find a good way to create and layout my own photobook and output it to PDF so I can publish it on Lulu.com and it looks like Lightroom lacks a feature like this, while Aperture offers a pretty good way for users to create their own books and export to PDF.
Is that really so ? Are there any plans for Lightroom to offer this feature as well ? I do not want to pay $200 on Aperture just for that when I am so happy with Lightroom.
    Please advise !
    Thanks !
    celso.

Is layout flexibility the key issue for you? For example, you could generate PDFs of sections from Lightroom's Print workspace, then upload them. I've tried this - though I would add that it's not as easy as it should be (luckily I also have InDesign). What are your key issues?

  • How do I link lightroom to revel

You use to be able to - how do I do it now???

Your FAQ specifically says, at this moment: "You can upload photos and videos to Revel using these apps: {..} Lightroom"
    Dropbox - Screen Shot 2015-03-18 at 1.08.13 PM.png
I just purchased a year's subscription to Revel and spent a day moving over 500G of photos from Aperture to Lightroom for this feature. I want a refund immediately. What is even the point of having an unlimited photo and video service that let's you share your whole life if you are not allowed to bring your past with you? Dragging and dropping into a browser is not an option, neither is a manual workflow when I am paying Adobe for Creative Cloud and separately for Revel.

  • In terms of organizing photos, what does Lightroom do better/different than Photoshop Elements?

    Hi,
I recently purchased Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements 12.  I have many, many pictures from several years on our hard drive and would love to be able to better organize and tag them, etc.  I have recently learned that Photoshop Elements can do this for me.  I have also recently heard that Lightroom is good for this.  Before I start importing thousands and thousands of files into PSE, I figure I should determine if I should use Lightroom instead.  This would obviously come at an additional cost, so I would like this forum's help in explaining how Lightroom might be better than PSE for this function so that I can determine if it's worth the extra cost.
    Thanks!

The PSE Organizer has fewer features and more bugs than Lightroom, in my opinion
Lightroom has more features for searching and more metadata fields for your use if you need them
Lightroom offers the ability to geotag your photos and display them on a map
Lightroom can streamline your workflow, so if for example you want to do the same things to multiple photos (including applying the same edits), this is much easier in Lightroom.
In general, my opinion is that Lightroom's Library Module is a superior piece of software than the PSE Organizer. In general, my opinion is that the user interface for Lightroom's Library module is a superior interface than the PSE Organizer. My opinion is that Lightroom's workflow is smoother and more efficient than doing the same things in PSE.
But some people love the PSE Organizer. It all depends on what you want to do. Your best path forward is to download the 30-day free trial of Lightroom, view some tutorial videos about Lightroom (don't skip this step), and compare for yourself the PSE Organizer to the Lightroom Library Module (and other parts of Lightroom as well).

  • Printing from Aperture, and printing from Lightroom.

    Hello,
I have noticed when I print from Aperture using my Canon i9950 and a custom paper Colorsync profile, and if I then print from Adobe's Lightroom using the same Colorsync profile and paper, the print from Lightroom is much sharper. The Aperture print is exact in every respect except it is noticeably softer.
Anyone else notice this? And if so is this a recognised problem that may be fixed in 1.1?
    Kind regards,
    Anil K Solanki
    G4 Dual 867   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Hi Charles, I totally agree with you. Lightroom's printing features are really excellent. In comparison Aperture almost seems like the printing of photographs was something the Aperture dev team bolted on at the last minute.
I sincerely hope Apple sort out, what for me is inexcusable in a professional commercial app. A few photographers I know are going to use the next release of Aperture as a turning point, if it can't print as good as the Beta Lightroom then they will become Lightroom users and say good bye to Aperture.
Apertures sorting and logging tools really are second to none, but if the print quality is poor, what is the point. I know for a large number of photographers, producing prints is not high on their list of needs, especially if they are supplying prints for publication or the web. But if I want to do what my old fashioned enlarger can do, which is create great prints, then hey I am not going to get it with Aperture.
I know Apple can fix this, I just hope they do.
    Anil.

  • Lightroom 2.0 versus PhotoElements 7 ?

    Hi,
I have about 20,000 digital photos on disk organised in folders named yyyy-mm-dd-eventname. I need something better to organise and catalog them, edit where necessary, and maybe do slide shows (although I am thinking of ProShow Gold for that). The two obvious choices seem to be Lightroom 2 or Photoshop Elements 7 (AFAIK, easier to use, much cheaper and appears to be better for editing - lots of fancy new easy to use editing tools have been added).
From what I can see, PSE7 seems to fit the bill, but lots of people seem to rave about Lightroom. Why ? Is there a detailed comparison of Lightroom and PSE7 features available anywhere, or can anyone here give me some pointers ?
If I go for PSE7, and migrate to Lightroom 2 later - will it import all the tag library correctly (ie. preserve tags, and category hierarchies etc.) - Are the two compatible in that way ?
    best regards,
    Aidan.

Hi all, thanks for the responses.
"...It's major feature is not what it can do but its workflow design for working with large quantities of images...."
I didnt really understand this until I checked it out on the web - eg. demo at http://www.vimeo.com/613582. I'm not sure how much use this would be to me though - do you have to have lots of *the same* photo to make use of this - why would someone want to adjust the contrast, colors etc on large batches of photos that were different? I rarely take more than two or three shots of the same scene, so I suspect this (often quoted) LR feature wont be any use to me.
"...One thing LR could learn from elements catalog though is how easy it is to search using multiple keywords by use of checkboxes, but again, it doesn't seem as if the adobe LR really gave much consideration to it's library module, especially in regards to what elements actually did right..."
I tend to agree with this comment after the first hour or so playing with both trial versions.
"...As far as I can tell, PSE7 does not yet offer the option of editing in Camera RAW for non-RAW files. For RAW files you can save the edits to XMP sidecars, but for non-RAW files, once you finish editing you have to either export to a new file or cancel your edits. I consider that to be a big plus for Lightroom..."
I dont fully understand the above comment, and I cant find much info on the extent of the PSE7 support for RAW, but The Adobe website page for PSE7 says that you can "Enjoy enhanced support for working with raw files"..."Get the highest quality results by performing nondestructive editing on the raw image files from your digital camera. Enjoy fine control over lighting and color adjustments, and save time by applying the same set of adjustments across multiple raw images simultaneously you can even see batch-applied changes as they're made. And now, edit raw files from a greater selection of camera models. ". I havnt shot anything in RAW format yet, so I guess it's less of an issue for me unless I start using RAW from now on.
All in all, it seems that for me (amateur, but with lots of images) if I only buy one tools PSE7 is probably better. The organiser seems easier to use, and the localised editing (and easy-to-use quick-fixes) seems suited to digital editing newbies. I don't mind saving edited photos under a different name (or overwriting the original) if necessary. RAW I'm not sure about yet though.

  • LightRoom to Edit in Photoshop to email

I love the Lightroom Email Photo feature.
This post is just a tip >>
There is a Photoshop Extension - Adobe Emailer [FREE] which can email photos direct from PS
If you Edit in Photoshop from LR and are in a hurry to email you can do so from PS before you close back to LR.
OutLook - Outlook Express and Thunderbird are supported.

Have a read of this to see if it helps:

    1) You dont absolutely need LR if you have Elements, but many find that having both speeds their workflow and results in better images.
    2)  Lightroom brings several features to the table not found in Elements.  LR includes a database (Library) module that enables faster, more comprehensive searches for photos on your computer.  If you shoot raw, LR offers a superior user interface.  Processing several images with similar needs simultaneously is easier in LR.
    3) There are no disadvantages to having both programs.  You can have both and use one or the other, as I sometimes do. Each has their own niches, and there is a  large overlap of function.   LR is a sufficient tool for many photos and tasks.  For those,  it is faster and easier to use than Elements.  Elements has a true pixel editor so can do more sophisticated enhancements to an image.  Actually, the most powerful combination of software is LR and Photoshop, but Elements is a decent approximation to PS's if you don't need 16-bit images.
    4)  LR 4 had teething problems, but everyone that I personally know using LR 4 is satisfied with the current LR 4.1.  There is mostly agreement that LR 4.1 is a bit slower than LR 3.6, but I would not avoid LR 4 for fear of it having "problems."    I've not heard of any  conflict between Elements and LR 4.1.  There are still issues reported on this and other forums, but I suspect they affect a small and diminishing number of users, and may be not much different from other imaging applications
    5) Nothing done in LR needs to be redone in Elements. After converting and adjusting in LR, you would pass an image on to Elements for further enhancements if needed.    LR does not do layers, compositing, and other pixel editing techniques--that's exclusively the Photoshop / Elements domain.  Normally, raw conversion and basic image adjustments (and a bit more) is done in LR.  When the image is transferred to Elements as a tiff or jpeg it is exactly as it left LR.
    Hope that is helpful.
    Jerry
