VFC is down Nexus 5020 Nexus 4001i

Hi All,
I am very new to Nexus 4001 and facing a problem related to its configuartion.
The topology involves IBM HS22 blade server with Qlogic dual port CNA, Nexus 4001, Nexus 5020, MDS 9513 and EMC storage.
I have done the configuration related to fip snooping in Nexus 4k and FCoE configurations in Nexus 5k.
The problem is that i am not able to get the enode mac address when i am running the command "show fip-snooping vlan-discovery".
also i am not able to make the vFC up in Nexus 5k.
I can upload the configuartions if needed.
Kindly suggest your comments or any solution.
FYI: All licenses are installed in Nexus 4k and 5k and FCoE and CNA drivers are installed in IBM server.
Thanks in advance,
Sanjeev

If the show mac-address is not showing any src mac being learnt in native vlan indicates server is not sending FIP messages.  The output you provided does confirm this  theory, see the marked output in bold which has value of zero.:

Based on the output you provided it looks to be a CNA issue, the  next step would be working with vendor to ensure Datacenter Bridging is working correctly.  Do you have OS loaded on local disk  or trying to boot from san?

  • Unicast Flooding on Nexus 5020 with ESXi 5 vMotion

We recently began testing VMware ESXi 5.0 on our production network.  After observing some heavy discards (3-10 million at times) on the 10G uplinks FROM our core 6509s TO the Nexus 5Ks we began some investigation.  We started by capturing traffic on vPCs from the Nexus 5K to the 6509s.  We found a tremendous amount of unicast vMotion traffic transmitting from the 6509s to the Nexus 5Ks.  Unicast vMotion traffic should never touch the 6509s core switches since it is layer two traffic.  We found that our problem was two fold.  Problem number one was the fact that on the ESXi 5 test cluster we had vMotion and the management vm kernel nics in the same subnet.  This is a known issue in which ESXi replies back using the management virtual mac address instead of the vMotion virtual mac address.  Therefore the switch never learns the vMotion virtual mac address thus flooding all of the vMotion traffic.  We fixed problem number 1 by creating a new subnet for the vMotion vm kernel nics and we also created a new isolated vlan across the Nexus 5Ks that does not extend to the cores, modifying the vDistributed switch port group as necessary.  To verify that the vMotion traffic was no longer flooding we captured traffic locally on the N5K, not using SPAN but simply eves dropping on the vMotion VLAN as an access port.  The testing procedure involved watching the CAM table on the 5K, waiting for the vMotion mac addresses to age out then starting a vMotion from one host to another.  Doing this process we were able to consistently capture flooded vMotion traffic onto our spectator host doing the captures.  The difference from problem 1 was that the flooding did not include all of the vMotion conversation as before but when vMotioning 1-2 servers we saw anywhere from 10ms to 1 full second of flooding then it would stop.  The amount of flooding varied but greatly depended on whether the traffic traversed the vPC between the 5Ks or not.  We were able to make the flooding much worse by forcing the traffic across the vPC between the N5Ks.
Has anyone else observed this behavior with N5Ks or VMware on another switching platform?
We were able to eliminate the vMotion flooding by pinging both vMotion hosts before beginning the vMotion. It seems that if VMware would setup a ping to verify connectivity between the vMotion hosts before starting the vMotion it would eliminate the flooding.
A brief description of the network..
Two 6509 core switches with layer 2 down to two Nexus 5020 running NX-OS version 5.0(3)N2(2b) using 2232PP FEX for top-of-rack.  For testing purposes each ESXi host is dual-homed with one 10G link (CNA) to each N5K through the FEX.  VMware is using vDistributed switch with a test port-group defined for the ESXi 5 boxes.
For curiosities sake we also observed packet captures from ESX 4.1 where we saw similar unicast flooding although it was near not as many packets as in ESXi 5.
We have a case open with TAC and VMware to track down the issue but were curious if anyone else has observed similar behavior or had any thoughts.
    Thanks
    Cody

Essentially the fix was to (a) turn off mac aging on the vmotion vlan on the 5K, (b) remove the L3 addressing from the vmotion vlan by not extending it to the 6K, and for good measure we (c) dedicated 2x10G ports per server just for multi-nic vmotion. These three measures did the trick.

  • Connecting two Nexus 5020 with 10G ISL link

    Hi Experts,
I am trying to connect two nexus 5020 with a 10G ISL link.
Per my understanding, with new release 5.0.3 N2(2a) ISL link between two nexus switch is supported.
    Following is my config
    c5020-1(config)# show running-config int vfc 32
    !Command: show running-config interface vfc32

      no shutdown
    c5020-1(config)#
    c5020-1(config)# sho running-config int eth1/32
    !Command: show running-config interface Ethernet1/32

    interface Ethernet1/32
      switchport mode trunk
      spanning-tree port type edge trunk
    c5020-1(config)#
I have similar config on the other switch. But for some reason the link does not come up. vfc port keep "initializing" and Eth port stays isolated.
    c5020-1(config)# sh int vfc32
vfc32 is trunking (Not all VSANs UP on the trunk)

If any expert throw some light to make me understand things better will be helpful.

i have not connected two Nexus before but looking at your eth 1/32 interfaces ..do you think it needs to be "
switchport trunk allowed vlan" your "FCOE" VLAN ?

  • How to change default FCoE QoS class - Nexus 5020

I see that on a Nexus 5020, the default FCoE QoS class is 50%. I am not using FCoE so I would like to adjust this value to 0%. I switch complains and says I can't change default values. How should I go about getting around this to eliminate the FCoE queue and give 100% BW to default? Thanks.

No. The default classloader is a builtin classloader in
the JRE. You can use other classloaders.
    The java.net.URLClassLoader is provided in
the JDK. That's the only one. Otherwise you
    should subclass ClassLoader and implement
    the loadClass method (f.i.
    loadClass("my.program") {
    String file="my.program".replace('.','/') + ".class";
// find the file in classpath
// read the class file in a byte[]
    return defineClass(byte[]);
although this is not the advised way to do it. Search the web for how to implement a classloader directly.

  • Nexus 5020/2248: Best Practice for DSCP-trust, verses DSCP-don't trust

We have several Nexus 5020/2248's for our server access to the network (approximately 1000 ports). On about 20 of these ports we want to trust the DSCP markings, since they are from out Cisco Unified Comm appliances (these are access ports). However, on all other ports  (mostly access, so DSCP, but ~ 100 trunks so some are COS also) we want to "not trust" or essentially zero out any non-zero DSCP value.
Does anyone have suggestions on easiest/best method for setting  the trust boundaries for Nexus 5020/2248s?

    Hi
Before any other think  I would like you to upgrade your WLC image to 7.6.130.0 & FUS to 1.9.0.0. FUS upgrade will require 30-40min downtime to your wireless.

It tells me to disable 802.11a and 802.11b. If I go into each radio on 'Network' tab and disable these - NOTHING can connect to any SSID. So unless I've misunderstood something - this is a contradiction in the best-practice link I posted above,
This simply says, you have to disable radio band before changing QoS profile values. Once you change those value you can re-enable the radio band. :)
If I enable FT-PSK and PSK - for devices that support FT-PSK (which i'm under the impression is 802.11r) will these devices use that and for devices that don't they'll use 'regular' PSK? How do I know if my client is connecting using PSK or FT-PSK as both are enabled on the same WLAN.
Read these 802.11r post & you will understand how 802.11r works. There are certain client devices does not like PSK & FT-PSK capability advertise on the same SSID & may have connectivity issues. But most of the clients like iPhone, iPads, etc  will connect without any problems.

"show client detail <mac_address>" should indicate if client connected over FT-PSK or PSK.

  • LMS4.0.1 Nexus 5020 - internal error in inventory collection

    Hello,
2 Nexus 5020 (SysObjId ...3.719) brings internal error in inventory collection as following:
"RICS0001: Internal Error, unable to process the collected data from the device"
whereby 2 other devices from same type, same sysobjid are working well. SDT from v401 shows this device as supported.
    What can we do?

    Hi Steffen,
Try updating the MDF and device packages for RME first and check the issue..
If you have not applied the below patch before ,kindly apply this :
Download the Patch for this BUg from cisco.com and apply it ..I hope that should take care of the issue.

  • DCNM 6.1.1a and Nexus 5020

    Hi all,
I've got a problem that I am not able to figure out.
    I've got 2 nexus 5020 running
    Software
      system:    version 5.0(2)N2(1)
      system image file is:    bootflash:/n5000-uk9.5.0.2.N2.1.bin
    Hardware
      cisco Nexus5020 Chassis ("40x10GE/Supervisor")
I use Nagios for management and so far, everything is working fine. Since a couple of days, I was thinking to install dcnm 6.1.1a on a red hat linux to test the app and see what can I do with the nexus. The problem is that every time that I try to work with the DCNM app, the CPU goes up a lot.

Could SNMP be the cause of this high CPU? How could I confirm it? Maybe it is a bug but I could not find anything.
Any ideas or comments are welcomed!
    THanks in advance,
    Fernando

Just to close this thread, we saw that the average cpu utilization is 10%. The CPU spikes might be due to the polling time or some cosmetic output. There is no output error, no discards, no traffic loss.
    thanks in advance,
    Fernando

  • Highest supported Brocade DCX firmware version to be interoperable with Cisco Nexus 5020

A Cisco Nexus 5020 (FCoE) switch is connected to Brocade DCX-B switch.
5020 is at latest firmware level of 5.0.2.N2.1
Brocade is at firmware level of 6.2.1b
If we need to upgrade brocade firmware, what is the maximum revision we can go to? Is there some documentation available for interoperability between the code levels of the two hardwares?

  • CISCO NEXUS 5020 Not Booting

I have a cisco nexus 5020 switch of 2 nos, but when i try to boot the device its result no image on the flash and it stuck in the boot mode. Is any possibility to boot the nexus from boot mode without having a image from flash.

    Hi Michael,
If the unit is not showing anything at all when connecting screen/keyboards, there won't be much more investigation possible. Likely the HW has gone bad and you will have to replace it.

  • Dell Servers with Nexus 7000 + Nexus 2000 extenders

<< Original post by smunzani. Answered by Robert. Moving from Document section to Discussions>>
    Team,
I would like to use some of the existing Dell Servers for new network design of Nexus 7000 + Nexus 2000 extenders. What are my options for FEC to the hosts? All references of M81KR I found on CCO are related to UCS product only.
What's best option for following setup?
    N7K(Aggregation Layer) -- N2K(Extenders) -- Dell servers
Need 10G to the servers due to dense population of the VMs. The customer is not up for dumping recently purchased dell boxes in favor of UCS. Customer VMware license is Enterprise Edition.
    Thanks in advance.

To answer your question, the M81KR-VIC is a Mezz card for UCS blades only.  For Cisco rack there is a PCIe version which is called the P81.  These are both made for Cisco servers only due to the integration with server management and virtual interface functionality.

  • Nexus 5020, after shutting down a nexus interface the Catalyst interface stays on(GLC-T)

Hi All, we have a weird case here:
    Nexus5020:
       NXOS:5.1(3)N1(1a),
       Eth1/1 with SFP-1000BASE-T (GLC-T)
    Catalyst 2960G
       int Gi0/1
both equipment connected with a crossover cable to those mentioned interfaces, after doing a shut on the nexus side (eth1/1), the catalyst stills shows the port up!!! could it be considered a normal behaivor? we would like that when shutting an interface on the nexus side the catlayst side see it down/down as happens between catalysts.
    thanks a lot

I have seen some cases where the port stays up, this was due to a bad cable. If you do a 'show int E1/1 and show int gi0/1 on the switches, do both show 1gb "full"?
Could you try replacing the cable, and also I don't believe you would need a cross-over. You should be able to use a straight-thru.

I am now unable to make changes to the switch-profile config. I know exactly where the difference is in the config. It is the description on one of the Ethernet interfaces
    interface Ethernet173/1/44
      description *** Server D4 ILO 10.87.103.51 ***
      switchport access vlan 31
      spanning-tree port type edge
    interface Ethernet173/1/44
      description *** Server D4 ILO 10.87.103.62 ***
      switchport access vlan 31
      spanning-tree port type edge
How can I recover from this and sync up both the profiles to the same revision?

    Hi,
Manually fix the description on one side so that both side look equally. (just conf term not conf sync)
Then it shoul sync again. But try to sync from both switches - I've the situation that it config sync succseeds from one side but not from the other.
