VG224 vs. VG248
We have VG248s configured but there have been many issues where the port will die or stop working(as in no dial tone). There are also EOL now. I wanted to know if I can get a VG224 which has less ports but not EOL.
What advantages does the VG224 have over VG248’s? Are there any IOS differences?
Any input, suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks!
The advantages are that the VG224 runs true IOS, and is not EOL.

Unconfigured VG Ports Show Event Log Errors
Unconfigured ports on a VG224 or VG248 show up in the Callmanager's Event Log as Stop Errors. Any way to suppress or filter these? I have roughly a hundred voice gateways with countless unassigned ports. It makes the Event log unusable to viewing other status.
Telnet to the VG248 and disable the port. If you leave them enabled, with no DIDs on them, or unregistered, they will sit there and peg your CCM constantly wanting to register. I just found that out.
Enable the next open port on the VG248?s. If possible, fill up on VG248, move to the next one.
To enable a port:
i. Telnet to VG248
ii. Login
iii. Configure
iv. Login with the #CCM pw
v. Scroll to Telephony then Port Specific Parameters, then select ?enabled port? to disable it
vi. Change your status from Disable to Enable (hit enter for menu to select Enable)
vii. Esc out until it exits the logout menu. -
I have 2 2651XM cisco routers with 2 Fast ethernet interfaces and cisco call manager express installed in each one.
I have a primary line conection E1
I need to configure a network with 72 telephones and 10 Fax machines.
My question is:
Which E1 interface card I need to integrate in the routers and use it as a gateway to the PSTN?
I think each router only can handle 52 telephones, so It'd be possible to use the 2 routers for dividing the 72 telephones and 10 Fax machines?
I suppose I can install 1 E1 card in one router and the other router without E1 card.
Which configuration do you recommend? With CME you can use either FXS ports on the router and run cable to where the fax machines are. This is a very clean solution. I prefer doing this. If you have higher density of fax machines, you may use a VG224. VG248 is not supported with CME.
You can also use ATA 186/.188 with fax machines but as of CME 3.x only H323 image of ATA 186 is supported with cme, which means the phones attached to ATA are not considered as ephones. ATA works as a H323 voip gateway with CME. I will have to check if SCCP image for ATA is supported with fax machines with CME 4.0. If you use ATA for attaching analog phones you may use SCCP image (or H323 image). For analog phones with SCCP image on ATA, you will need to create ephones and ephone-dns, just like any other IP phones.
Also note that some newer fax machines (high speed) cannot work with ATA as ATA is limited to 14.4 kbps speeds.
Hope that makes sense
Sankar

Anyone know if JTAPI supports call control on the vg224. I know that it works on the vg248 but since the 224 is IOS based, was wondering if there is a difference.
Mark@gpulos: are you sure about that? The protocols you listed are signalling protocols.. jtapi is a cti protocol.. I'm pretty sure you won't find jtapi mentioned on any phone/device product page .. it's a feature the call manager offers.
I don't have a VG224 device to test, but I added one to my ccm, configured one of the ports, added a line to it, and then I was able to create a device association via my cti user.. so if that's possible, the device should be monitor-able via JTAPI and TAPI. -
Bulk Administration Tool for VG224
Is there a way to bulk import VG224's into CallManger 4.1(3). I have about 75 VG224's and must assign a directory number for each. I've tried VGC,and Virtual VGC templates that end up with a VG248 config. Any ideas would be great for the VG224. Thanks.

The problem is: if I start a call from analogic phone to ipphone the call wors well, but i I start a call from an ipphone to the analogic phone the call fails.

Every now and then a customer has a vg224 that the ports will just quit working. No dialtone. The workaround has been to reconfigure a new port and move the device but they will fail again eventually. Whomever set this vg224 up is using a combination og MGCP ports as well as SCCP ports. It seems the MGCP ports are the problem. But, I am running many vg224 with MGCP at many locations with no problems like this. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
When I run into that issue on a VG224 I put these commands with the port that has no dial tone and it corrects the issue. It is like if the VG224 does not hang up that port when the call is finished.

Note For ad-hoc conferencing on Cisco Unified SCCP IP phones, the #3 feature code is required for the "conference" call-control mode after pressing hookflash the first time."

What protection do you use with VG224s?
We have many VG224s in production. Nearby lightning strikes kill ports on the VG224.
The cabling has protection on it - from the old Western Electric 701 PBX. However, that switch delivers 52 volts at 39 milliamps, and the Cisco VG224 is much lower.
The protection on the cable plant was designed for the Western Electric switch.
What is the best practice? When changing out PBXs for VGs, do we have to change out the protection, and if so, what is recommended?Hello,
The VG224 is designed for on premises applications which is generally
for internal building use. If you are having issues with lightning strikes
blowing up the interfaces, then it appears that you are using the VG224 as an Off
Premises Extension with long/exposed cable runs which are susceptible to
picking up RFI and EMI. The VG224 was not designed to be used for OPX use and
we would not be recommending it in environments where cable runs are exposed to
lightning even with external protection.
Normally you would use an external line driver/isolator to drive the long
distances and provide isolation/protection. These are often called Long Loop
Adapters. Here is an example -
http://www.telcom-data.com/products/VIK-LLA-1.aspx
Our newer FXS modules support an "OPX lite' mode which drives longer distances
and has better protection -
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/collateral/ns340/ns517/ns477/ns296/application_note_c27_461821.html
Hope that helps!

VG2921 - H323 - VG224 - analoge Modem works not properly
Hello Community, I try to setup a modem to work properly. First I try it w/ SCCP but fails, so I change to H323 but it is also not successful.
Modem answer to an incoming call, but they not negotiate and handshake fails and hang up.
Setup is following.
Calling Modem Called Party 93276 -- PSTN -- BRI -- VG2921 -- H323 -- VG224 -- Port 2/4 93276 Connected Modem.
The Modem at 93276 answer you hear typical whistler tone fax, but still only noise and after time the modem hans up.
I think they are not negotiate the right baud rate.
Trace and Config are attached.
Any help are appreciate,
Thanks in ahead

Analog Phone->VG224(MGCP)--CCM4.1(3)--3725(MGCP)--PSTN
Analog works fine, can dial any PSTN number and from the PSTN can the analog phone. But when I connect a fax machine to the VG224, and try from IP Phone dial the fax number, there is no fax dial tone. When I try to send a fax, I can hear remote site site sending fax tone, and then about 10 seconds later the fax get comm error.
eptpos does not work either when connecting to VG224.
Here is the related configuration:

MWI does not work on Cisco IP Phones using VG248
Hi,
We are facing issue with MWI on/off using SMDI connectivity to FCS voicemail system with Cisco Callmanager (6.1.x). Below is the connectivity.
CUCM ver 6.1.4---->VG248 ver 1.3.1 (SMDI and Asyc1) ----> FCS
We are able to receive and send voicemails on the IP Phones but the light never lit. I verified the MWI numbers on CUCM/VG248 and FCS voicemail system, rebooted all the appliances with no luck.So if have the port numbers with you for Sonos multiroom-system then you can do the port forwarding and follow the steps:-
First of all get your Device IP address for which you want to do the Port Forwarding...
Then open the router's setup page click on the Applications and Gaming Tab and then click on the sub tab Port Forwarding then open the ports that you want...
Refer the link : http://media.photobucket.com/image/XBOX%20360%20NAT%20issues/EricScpoc/linksys_setup.png
Then logout from your Router's setup page.. Unplug your Router from the power, wait 30 seconds. Then plug in the Router again.
Try out these settings it will help you out... -
We have to add an VG224 in CUCM..and there is a MAC id need to be add. How we are gonna get that MAC, is there a command while logging into vgw that we need to give to get that MAC.
You can get it by issuing "sh interface" on the GW.

VG248 or FXS port pass DNIS to the attached device ?
Hi All,
I have an IP Telephony and unified messaging setup.
Topology:
PSTN--2600--CallMgr---VG248----FaxServer
I need to have dedicated fax lines then I have two options, either use the VG248 or use analog cards in 2600 type of ios voice gateway. I would like to know if both or any of these voice gateways will pass the Called Number (DNIS) to the Fax Server???
Passing the Called Number is important because based on those dialed numbers, Fax server will send the calls to the right mail box.
Your help in this regard would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ahmer GhaziThe following link explains about Cisco 2600 router acting as fax gateway.
