VGA Adapter cable?

Hi,
I am about to ween my mother of her old windoz PC (at last) and am treating her to new Mac Mini. I want to use her existing TFT as a monitor which has a VGA plug on the end. I am presuming I need to buy an adapter cable for this but looking at the apple store I am thoroughly confused as to EXACTLY which cable I should be buying. Looking at some of the reviewers on the UK site ,they seemed to be confused as well. Any help would be much appreciated.
many thanks in advance.

That depends upon which MacMini you are buying. As you may have noticed, Apple released a new Mac Mini today.
With the new Mac Mini, you would need the Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A
With the previous model, you would need the Mini DVI to VGA Adapter:

You can also use the first adapter on both devices (since both versions have Mini DisplayPorts).

    Thank you!

My google search brought up this http://www.thetwistergroup.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=253-512IV%20 D17617&source=fr which is similar to your amazon solution. Unfortunately none of them ship to Greece so I'll have to do some retail scanning myself tomorrow.

  • Mini DisplayPort to VGA, bad cable/connection?

So I have had this Apple version of the Mini DisplayPort to VGA cable for a little while now, not sure if it has been a year yet...and well it has stopped working.  I noticed this after my friend was messing with it on his MacBook, but I do not know if it was him or not.  The problem is that the cable will connect to my Mac, but it will not display onto my external monitor...that is unless I press downlwards on the white cable, and as soon as I do it stops.  Is there anything I can do about this?  Would this be considered something that would be under warranty?

The connection to my external display monitor stops.  I'll push down on the cable, my MacBook screen goes blue for a second as it usually does and then I will be mirroring on both MacBook and my external display (I am still holding down the wire), and as soon as I let go my MacBook acts as if the VGA adapter cable is not even plugged in.  I am currently on the phone with Apple support and they are working with me on getting a replacement.

  • Apple vga conversion cable support in maverick? Not working!

So I have I guess the first gen of the Mac Pro before this new one comes out
I have the vga adapter cable that apple made so I could connect my monitor.  I downloaded maverick and now my monitor will not work.  Is there a work around for this?  I just got home from camp work been away for 6 months and would like to work my computer lol.
I'm guessing this is a software issue?  Does anybody know of a work around??

Sweet Jesus the old lady messed up my cables
    K, Ive dug
Out the proper ones, we just moved.
It's going from right in the back if the Mac Pro, to a hdmi cable.  No adapter.  Out Mac Pro (forget what that connection is called) to hdmi
The adapter cable is fine it's always worked.  When the old lady downloaded maverick the monitor stopped working immed.

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter w/ extension cable

I would like to get a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter for my macbook. Does anyone know how it would would if I used it with a VGA extension cable. Any experience will be helpful

Depends on how long the cable is, and if it was of sufficient quality for computer use. The higher resolutions require better quality and shorter cables. You may get some signal loss for long cables. A standard monitor cable that comes with a computer monitor should be fine, but what kind of length extension cable are you talking about?

  • Mini dvi to VGA adapter to HDMI cable

i have a mini dvi to vga adapter for my macbook (bought in 2007) and that works but I want to connect to hdmi cable to this? But don't exactly know how to do this or if it is possible?

It is my understanding that 'VGA' is analog and HDMI is digital....from what I have read it won't work without a convert
I use a Mini DVI to DVI adapter and then a DVI to HDMI adapter to run the HDMI cable to to TV
    the converter...VGA to HDMI...

Personally I would shelf the VGA adapter and go with the new cable set up...if you already have the HDMI cable then an adapter from DVI to HDMI would be in order

  • I cannot get my monitor cable to fit in the hdmi to vga adapter

    Hello
I was wondering if anyone is having the same issue as me.  I'm trying to plug my new mac mini into my Dell flat screen monitor.  It doesn't seem to fit my HDMI to VGA cable so I'm assuming that my cable is in fact a DVI?  The cable is actually a little too big for the VGA adapter and no spots for the screws.  If anyone could help me further I'd really appreciate it.

I am considering a Apple iMac but would be interested in adding a second monitor. Does it have to be an Apple monitor or can i add any monitor with a thunderbolt cable and DVI or vGA adapter?

I found that the Thunderbolt input accepts the mini-DVI (in my case converter to VGA for a tutorial use monitor)
BUT, you have to really oush it in 'til it clicks.  I thought it too loose until I tried it.  works just fine!!

  • Need instructions for Enhanced Cable Tech "Liberty" VGA adapter....

    Hi!
I'm trying to get my old PowerMac 8500 up and running. The only display I have that is (well, should be...) compatible is an old Apple Studio Display 15" Flat Panel (Rev B.). This is the second iteration of that display, with the VGA connection, not the earlier Mac 15 pin D-sub connection, which is what the 8500 has (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP135).
I have two adapters that I'd think should do the trick of getting me something on the display. An NEC MultiScan unit that has several resolutions printed on it, but no adjustments, and an Enhance Cable Technologies Liberty adapter.
The NEC one gets me noplace, and so far, neither does the Liberty.
The Liberty has a knob with several letter stops (A-M or N), and a set of 9 (I think) DIP switches. Instructions on the back list many resolutions, but only give instructions for the last 3 DIP switches, which are for sync. It mentions to consult the instructions (which I can't find or don't have) for using the other DIP switches to get "expanded" ID codes.
I've tried all of the knob stops, and a couple DIP switch settings, but nothing seems to get me an image on the display. The display does work, it just isn't detecting a signal, and it will tell me so.
I think the 8500 may be going into "headless" server mode (no video) when it can't detect a monitor attached, so once it boots (and it IS booting), I can't get anything until I re-boot again. I'll have to dig up an OS9 install CD, to see if that helps me any. When I stored it some years ago, it was running Mac OS X 10.2 via a boot loader (it has a Sonnet PPC G3 processor upgrade card), so that may be an issue, too.
But, I was hoping that maybe someone has the instructions for the Liberty adapter kicking around in their junk drawer. All I need is the instructions for the DIP switch settings.
    Regards,
    Larry W.

Well, bought some new PRAM batteries from OWC. Installed one on the 8500/150 (also bought spares for my G4 & SE/30), zapped the PRAM several times, and still nothing. Then dug out my DVI-VGA adapter for my MBP, just to verify that nothing had gone sour with the display since I last put it in the box. All good there.
But, it turns out that I had a solution all along in the "Accessories Kit" in the box the Studio Display came with. There was, still sealed in 16-year-old plastic, an adapter that came bundled with the display! Cut open the plastic, installed it, hooked on the display, and presto-chango, I'm watching Jaguar boot up!
Though, Jaguar isn't so swift on this machine, even with a 250Mhz G3 processor... Might have to do with only 240MB of RAM... Once I got it back running Mac OS 9.1, though, it's a pretty snappy machine. It even reports a processor speed of 279Mhz!
Now I can get what I need from the machine, and move it on to a new home. Also check out all the rest of my SCSI devices for data I think I need, as this is my last SCSI machine that'll take more than one internal device!
And I may even see if I can make the Liberty adapter work like the Apple-supplied one.

  • Using mini-DVI to VGA adapter to Samsung display

I have 2009 late model of mac mini, The text on display looks washed out, not clear or sharp at all from day one, I thought it was the old model of monitor, tried the same cable to another monitor on another computer, SAME. so I thought the problem could be the cable or adapter.
It's hard for me to believe is the signal from computer. I'm using VGA adapter made by Dynex bought from Best Buy.
    Anybody has suggestions?? Thanks

Yeah, My old Samsung is lcd synmaster 17", bought many years ago at around $1000. Crazy, crazy price looked back. It's fine when I used it on the retired old Dell. It must be the adapter, trying not to buy another VGA adapter, could not image my next lcd will use one, anyway.
This cable has only 14 pins vs 15 pins on the other cable, not sure if it matters?? Or if Safari has anything to do with it??
    Thank for you reply...

  • Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter

I purchased a Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter for my MacBook (early 2008).
When I plug the cable into my MacBook it works fine, I have to drag the browser from my macBook onto my LCD using the curser. But when I do this with iTunes and I want to watch a film or music video there is no sound. Does anyone have any ideas of how to solve this problem or if im using it right.
    Please help.

Ah. Okay. Well you need to output the sound from your MacBook to your TV. You need another cable to carry the audio. You can use an 1/8 mini audio to TOSLINK (if your TV supports optical audio input) or 1/8" to RCA audio (those red/white cables).

  • Mini DVI to VGA Adapter Issues

    Hey guys,
My first ever post to the forums. I just recently bought my very first apple computer. It is a 2.4 ghz Macbook 13" and bought a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter so that I can connect it to my 46" Sharp AQUOS TV. I connect my laptop with the dvi to vga adapter plus another vga cable of course and all I get on the screen is my wallpaper but I can't see any of the icons on my tv screen, nothing.
Can anyone help me on this? Does this sound like a familiar problem?
    I would appreciate your help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Dogan

    Hi DoDolom,
    First, welcome to Macintosh!
Secondly, it sounds to me like what's happened is that OS X has extended your desktop onto a second monitor. Plug in an external mouse and keyboard and then close the MacBook's lid. It will go to sleep. Use the external mouse/keyboard to wake it up and you should be running on just the external display.

  • Mini- DVI to VGA adapter Or is that, DVI to DVI?

I am having difficulty figuring out which adapter to purchase if I want to use my MacBook to make a Keynote or PowerPoint Presentation with an LCD projector.
Do I need the Mini- DVI to VGA adapter, or is it DVI to Video adapter, or DVI to DVI adapter? Good grief! I've made fabulous-looking slides and just want to take my computer to the lecture hall, connect it to their projector, and give my talk. How does one decide which cable to get, if I don't know for certain what kind of projector they are using?
Aren't all LCD projectors standardized this way?
    Thanks for the clarification.
    ~ john

As mentioned, VGA is much more common than DVI is on projectors, so the mini-DVI to VGA will certainly work more often than the mini-DVI to DVI will.
It costs $19USD, so I would get both and use the best option available to you when you get to the location and see what kind of projector they have.
You also may want to pack the VGA and a DVI cable just in case. You never know if the location will have one on hand, or if it gets misplaced just in time for your arrival.
