VGA and Educators---Yikes!

I am a retired teacher and my former comrades and comradesses come to me with tech questions.  More well-to-do school districts are buying multiple iPads for whole classes, even whole schools. Poorer school districts like mine don't have any unless the teachers buy their own.  Many teachers have done this, but face the serious problem of how to make the plethora of wonderful teaching apps visible to a classroom via their schools VGA projector.  This seemed like a question with a straight forward answer, since Apple makes a 30 pin to VGA adapter.  Just before I sent the e-mail out, I thought this seemed to be too obvious, so I headed to the Apple online store to check out user reviews.  What I found was pretty shocking.  For the person at home who is trying to show movies and things acquired through iTunes, it works great.  Those users gave it 5 stars. The large majority, though, gave it 1 or 2 stars because the adapter only works with a very narrow number of applications. They are left with a wonderful new car that they can't drive because no one sells the right gasoline.  Given that there are undoubtedly a lot more poor school districts than rich, this proves unfortunate for both students and Apple.  If there are any fixes to make this adapter work, I would be thrilled and so would a whole school district of teachers. Please let me know!  Thanx!

Yeah, on the apple site "iPad" now refers to the new one - although they sell refurbs of the old one.
My suggestion? Lend your ipad2 to a teacher or take it to school yourself, and try it with a VGA connector to see how well it works (particularly if you have old projectors) before recommending teachers buy one. I'm an elementary tch coordinator myself, and only reason I considered buying ipad2 was for mirroring educational apps.

  • Mini-dvi to vga and svideo

I am using my MacBook a lot with an external screen (mini-dvi to vga adapter) and with my TV using the mini-dvi to svideo adapter.
I am getting tired of switching between both adapters and the switching might wear off the mini-dvi female plug on my macbook.
Actually I am looking for a mini-dvi switchbox, so i can connect both setups (vga and svideo) and choose between them by using the switch of the switchbox. Unfortunately I cannot find a switchbox like this, and I doubt whether it exists.
I believe an alternative to first use a mini-dvi to dvi adapter does not work. Suggested setup would be then:
mini-dvi --> dvi --> dvi splitter --> dvi-vga and dvi-svideo. But i believe the mini-dvi --> dvi adapter discards the analog signal. Last option would be to construct a splitter myself, needing the proper mini-dvi ports (1 male, 2 female).
Anyone any ideas on this topic?

This is normal in extended desktop. You can drag anything you want from the main screen to the external screen. I prefer it this way when I am watching MLB.TV. I keep the game on my external and use my internal work surfing and other stuff.
You can use the F7 key to switch back and forth

  • Mini-Displayport to DVI adapter not working, but Mini-Displayport to VGA and Thunderbolt work fine

Mini-Displayport to DVI adapter not working, but Mini-Displayport to VGA and Thunderbolt work fine.
This is a brand new MacBook Pro (15-inch, mid-2012) just received.  I suspect that this is a hardware problem as:
The mini-displayport to DVI adapter and the external monitor that I am utilizing connect and operate just fine using my older MacBook Pro (mid-2010) with the same OS.
The new MacBook Pro powers the external monitor with a mini-displayport to VGA adapater without issue.
The new MacBook Pro powers an Apple Thunderbolt display without issue.
Both MacBook Pro's are running OSX Lion 10.7.4.
The only combination which does not work is the mini-displayport to DVI adapater used in conjunction with the brand new MacBook Pro (mid-2012).
All adapters and components (mini-displayport adapters) are Apple retail adapter.
I have tried several external monitors, including my Dell U2412m.
When I connect the mini-displayport to DVI adapater to the new MacBook Pro (mid-2012), nothing happens. The external monitor reports "no signal" and attempts to go into sleep mode.  Using the "Detect displays" button has no effect, even when used multiple times.  Rebooting does not help, nor does resetting the SMC or PRAM.
Any other suggestions before I take it to the Genius Bar?

I turns out that the logic board of my MacBook Pro was faulty (despite being brand new).
I took it to the Apple Store, presented the problem, and one of the Tech's came to the same conclusion that I had -- hardware failure.  Phone support was no help in the matter (and even told me that what I was trying to do wasn't a supported option, which is rediculous).  However, the Genius Bar did take care of the problem, and my MacBook Pro was back to me with a replaced logic board within a few days.
    Hope that htis helps.

  • Can you use VGA and DisplayPort at the same time.

I have a T500 with the ATI graphics. I currently have it set up with only a VGA monitor. I am wanting to also get the DisplayPort to VGA adapter. Will I still be able to use both external monitors and my laptop monitor? If anyone has done this let me know. I have read that you can use VGA and DVI but neither of my monitors have DVI.

I would suggest you visit an Apple dealer, preferably an Apple Store if there's one in your city, and ask for assistance in determining what you need. The questions and issues you bring up are rather complex to address in a technical support forum and would be better addressed in person where you and the salesperson can ask questions back and forth to arrive at the optimal setup.

I have a Macbook Pro (late 2012) and I would like to connect it to 2 screens simultaneously (1 screen is a TV and can only take HDMI, the other is a larger computer screen and has both VGA and HDMI connections). How can I do this?

The article you cited refers to The Mac Pro, a 50lb silver tower -- not a notebook computer.
    Everymac.com says:
    2nd Display Support:
    Dual/Mirroring*
    2nd Max. Resolution:
    2560x1600 (x2*)
    Details:
*This model supports a simultaneous maximum resolution up to 2560x1600 on two external displays via Thunderbolt. Alternately, it can support a single display up to 2560x1600 via Thunderbolt and a single display up to 1920x1200 via HDMI. Although it can theoretically power all three external displays, as confirmed by a helpful reader, it runs too hot with three displays connected.
Also see: How many external displays can the Retina Display MacBook Pro models support? What is the maximum supported resolution of each? Are adapters required?
When using other than ThunderBolt displays, the ThunderBolt port is directly compatible with Mini DisplayPort, and can be forced into compatibility (with Single-Link DVI or HDMI up to 1920 wide) with a simple adapter.
To adapt to wider displays, an ACTIVE Dual-Link adapter is needed, about US$100.

    Thanks for your help!

hey! Thats normal for notebook! That actually happens to almost all of us - as there are a small fraction of people with two and more thunderbolt displays or with newest rMBP and external multi-monitor setup.

    Win32_DisplayConfiguration
But unable to determine monitor having  its corresponding values? please help me to find a solution .
is there any other method to get multi monitor details?

    Hi sumith,
I read some documents about WmiMonitorConnectionParams class, it should be able to get the video putput technology by the D3DKMDT_VIDEO_OUTPUT_TECHNOLOGY enumeration.
    D3DKMDT_VIDEO_OUTPUT_TECHNOLOGY enumeration
So what happens when you are using WmiMonitorConnectionParams class? What prevent you? Anyway, please see a example of using WmiMonitorConnectionParams class, maybe you could get some hints on it.

  • Reinstall win 7, VGA and HDMI driver

    Hi everyone,
    2 problems
1.I treid to reformat my hp probook 4320s and reinstall windows back to factory settings. I made a recovery disk when i first got it (at least im sure i did) and when i try to boot it says windows is loading files, i see the white bar accross the bottom moving along until 2/3rd of the way then it stops. Ive left it for 8 hours this way and it remains frozen. did i not create the disk properly?
    2. So instead i had a spare win 7 and reinstalled using that, i suspect the VGA and HDMI drivers are missing or something because now when i connect an external monitor via these 2 ports nothing comes up whereas it did before i reinstalled.
Does anyone know which specific drivers i need? I looked on the support page but iv eno idea which one i need.

    Hi:
Since your model can have either the Intel or AMD/Intel switchable graphics, there is no way of telling without some additional information.
Go to the device manager and click to expand the Display Adapters category.
When the graphics drivers are not installed, you will see a device labeled Standard VGA Adapter.
If you see one listing of a Standard VGA adapter, then install the Intel HD graphics driver.
If you see two listings of a Standard VGA adapter, then install the AMD graphics driver.
The AMD graphics driver will install the drivers for both the AMD and Intel switchable graphics processors.
As far as the recovery disk not working, it is anyone's guess as to why.
You can order a set of recovery disks by contacting HP for the country you live in at the link below.

  • VGA and HDMI

I am going to buy a new monitor. My firend suggested me to buy a TV instead. I have an ipad 4 and a macbook air. I also have lightning to VGA and mini display to VGA. Most of the TVs have HDMI input not VGA. I am planning to get a VGA to HDMI converter to fix it. Will it work?

Instead of getting a VGA to HDMI converter, get a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a HDMI cable, so you don't need a converter and there are more chances to make your TV work with your MacBook Air. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4241
The main benefit of using HDMI is the possibility to use a HD resolution on the TV if it allows you to use one of those

  • Whats the difference VGA and CIF

hi can anyone tell me what VGA and CIF mean what are the differences and which is better?

The term VGA [Video Graphics Array]is often used to refer to a resolution of 640×480, regardless of the hardware that produces the picture. It may also refer to the 15-pin D-subminiature VGA connector which is still widely used to carry analog video signals of all resolutions.
The VGA specifications are as follows:
    256 KiB Video RAM
    16-color and 256-color modes
262144-value color palette (six bits each for red, green, and blue)
Selectable 25 MHz or 28 MHz master clock
    Maximum of 720 horizontal pixels
    Maximum of 480 lines
Refresh rates at up to 70 Hz
Planar mode: up to 16 colors (4 bit planes)
    Packed-pixel mode: 256 colors (Mode 13h)
    Hardware smooth scrolling support
    Some "Raster Ops" support
    Barrel shifter
    Split screen support
    Soft fonts
The VGA supports both All Points Addressable graphics modes, and alphanumeric text modes. Standard graphics modes are
    640×480 in 16 colors
    640×350 in 16 colors
    320×200 in 16 colors
    320×200 in 256 colors (Mode 13h)
As well as the standard modes, VGA can be configured to emulate many of the modes of its predecessors (EGA, CGA, and MDA).
    VGA is better.
The Quarter Video Graphics Array (also known as Quarter VGA or QVGA) is a popular term for a computer display with 320 × 240 resolution. QVGA displays are most often seen in mobile phones, PDAs and some handheld game consoles. Most often the displays are in a “portrait” alignment (as opposed to “landscape”) and are referred to as 240 × 320 as the displays are taller than they are wide.
The name is derived from the fact that it offers 1/4 of the 640 × 480 maximum resolution of the original IBM VGA display technology, which became a de facto industry standard in the late 1980s.
At higher resolutions the "Q" prefix sometimes means "Quad" or four times the display resolution (e.g. QXGA which is 2048 × 1536).

VGA is a connection standard between a computer's graphic card and a monitor:

SD means "Standard Definition" and is a new name for the old TV resolution:
